Guest Reviews
- Geoffrey (10/5): A nice little hotel with great staff!! - Really close to the city and shops! Staff were extremely friendly and helpful!! The room was great but the decor was a little tired, but we will stay here again as location was great!!
- Shaz (7/5): - Friendly staff ,lovely breakfast comfy ved Bit tired - stairs up to rooms bit shabby and not as clean.
- Fiona (9/5): We had a great stay here - Great location, room as spacious and bed was comfortable. Staff were really friendly too We weren’t told any information about when or how to get breakfast. It was a bit confusing as online it says the pub opens at 10, check out also at 10 so we weren’t sure when breakfast would be, I had to look on questions people had asked about the property to find out about when breakfast was
- Stacy (10/5): -
- Jennifer (8/5): - Staff were so friendly and helpful, beds were super comfy and room was so spacious. Also breakfast was perfect The bathroom needed a bit of a freshen up as the wallpaper was almost of the wall but it was very clean.
- Mark (9/5): York. Nice people. Nice food. Good liqure. - Staff is fantatic. Very helpful. Friendly. Accomidating.
- Robert (7/5): -
- Ian Carl (8/5): Enjoyable, staff and pub customers very welcoming - Friendly pub, both staff and locals Nothing, it was all good
- Susan (4/5): Enjoyed the town not happy about car parking charges - Not much to choose from no cereals the location was good 👍 our room was at the top of the hotel with stairs which was very steep More information in the room very noisy loud music until 12 pm
- Clare (8/5): Pleasant stay - Close to centre of York Nothing
- Jim (9/5): Excellent location. great city. - Location, staff, room, friendly, good atmosphere
- Karen (8/5): It felt friendly & personal to be a guest at this b&b. - Very good location. Excellent fry up for breakfast I could not eat it all! The staff & owners were all very warm & helpful.
- Angela (9/5): We will definitely use again when in the area - Perfect location for all York has to offer, lovely clean room and comfy bed. Decor is a little dated but didn’t affect our stay. If we are back in the area I would definitely stay again Only down side is there’s no parking but there is a public car park within a five minute walk.
- Emma (10/5): A great stay at this pub ,wonderful staff that were there if you needed them - Fantastic breakfast set us up all day !
- Rachel (9/5): Really enjoyed our stay, getting to know the locals, would stay there again if In York - Central location, old pub built into the city walls. Clean and pleanty of toiletries, added advantage of having a bath. Breakfast amazing Nothing
- Denis (10/5): Excellent will definitely be back - Hayley and her staff were excellent very friendly and welcoming, the breakfast was amazing the pub itself was brilliant 👏👏👏
- Heidi (8/5): - Loved the location. A few steps and you're at the city wall entrance to the main pubs /shops. Staff were so friendly. Breakfast was amazing. Fresh coffee. They gave us plenty of bottles of water which is rare to keep replenishing for one night. We loved our stay and can't wait to return. Shower wasn't great, very hit and miss with the temperature.
- Sara (4/5): Although the location was good we will not be staying at the white horse again - It was in a good location. The girl who served us our breakfast was pleasant and accommodating. There was no parking and this was not made clear until it was too late for a free cancellation.
The member of staff that greeted us on arrival could have been friendlier. The reviews said that the internet was good, but the WiFi was non-existent during our stay, making it untenable to gain access to the internet.
- Toni (8/5): Canny little b&b - Breakfast was ok
- derek (6/5): Would not recommend staff seemed to busy with the bar and there friends to worry about guests - It was in the centre of York We arrived to book in at 2 o’clock but didn’t get our room till after 3 the heater in the room only came on in the morning and then again at night freezing during the day went for breakfast the chef hadn’t turned up so no breakfast was offered some food at 5 o’clock when we arrived back after a full day of sight seeing but we had already eaten didn’t stay Monday for breakfast as we didn’t want to hang around just in case the chef never turned up so set of home breakfast in skipton
- Tia (6/5): - Cozy property, close to everything. Quite old facilities
- Lisa (5/5): - Location very good. Staff friendly and welcoming Double room had 2 single beds pushed together, not very comfortable. One bed seemed older than the other.
Plumbing sounds like someone is throwing buckets of water in the bathroom. This was going on through the night, early morning or whenever another cistern was used. Other noisey pipes in the room also wakes you up early.
Very expensive in comparison to other rooms in public houses near by.
- Anthony W Tindall (10/5): Great location, great price and lovely staff - Excellent location near York Minster
Lovely clean and tidy room with a very comfortable bed Stairs up to rooms but that wasn't such a problem even though i am disabled. Staff guided me up and even carried luggage for us.
- Andrew (10/5): Amazing - Everything was brilliant. Location is great and the staff are so friendly. Can’t wait to come back next year
- Jackie (5/5): Not what we expected for the price so wouldn’t book here again, but the staff were lovely. - The location is great, very close to the minster and all the shops and bars etc within a minute’s walk. The room was very dated and shabby, although it did have new beds that were comfy, the noise from the bar entertainment/dj was that loud the bed vibrated (I know noise is to be expected when you stay in a pub) but it was very very loud.
- donna (9/5): Brilliant location! - Really close to everything including train station all within walking distance. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and helpful! Comfortable room and bed with decent WiFi. Breakfast was great too ! Situated on a main road and without double glazing I didn't get the best sleep due to the noise but it wouldn't stop me staying again I will remember earplugs next time!
- Deborah (10/5): We had a great stay in a great location and a very comfortable bed. - The property is centrally located. The room was very large and had a double and single bed in it even though there was only 2 of us. Bed was very comfortable and the staff were lovely. Breakfast was the best. Nothing
- Lisa (7/5): -
- Niall (3/5): Other than the location, it was unsatisfactory. - Location - Excellent Booked 2 Twin Rooms. Arrived and 1 room was a twin and the other was a double. The staff member said she could sort the Double into a Twin. Later she confirmed she could not do so. When booking, I sent message saying I needed 2 Twin Rooms and I got a response saying no problem. Also in 1 Room, the heating did not work. The Rooms were also not very clean and had mould around window and ceiling.
I skipped breakfast for the first 2 mornings but on the final morning before departing, I decided to go for breakfast. Arrived downstairs at 8.15 and a staff member told me they don't start breakfast until around 9am. This was not communicated to us at check in or is not written on the booking website.
- Galvin (7/5): - Good location and very friendly and helpful staff, a very clean room Facilities could be updated
- Stephen (7/5): Value stay - Comfortable bed, good breakfast Noisy Karaoke and other guests
- Adam (7/5): -
- Robert (10/5): lovely staff and great location - lovely down to earth staff and really great location nothing to moan about! it was a lovely stay
- Shirley (10/5): Will stay there again - In the centre of town ,lots to do and see .
Staff were really friendly and helpful. Food was good. It was lovely to sit and have a drink/food then just head upstairs to room.
- Karen (3/5): Not recommended much better places to stay - The location is close to city centre. The staff were friendly. The rooms are accessed from a back stairwell with very dirty carpets and did not set a good impression. The pub is ok but the accommodation is very dated and it is quite dirty. Although it has some traditional features most are painted in a gloss white with flaky paint. The net curtains on the stairwell were filthy and the carpets not vacuumed. The wallpaper was coming off the wall in the bathroom due to previous water leaks and the window did not close meaning the smell of people smoking outside the from door came in. Lots of cobwebs in the room and old stained furniture. The carpet was badly fitted with gaps. Overall, the room was not even at travelodge standard. We were actually going to move but there was not a lot of availability in the surrounding hotels. The breakfast menu is very limited although the food itself was fine. The hotel had a band playing which was incredibly noisy in the room.
- Andreea-Iulian (9/5): -
- Zoe (8/5): -
- Neil (10/5): Ideal little gem in the heart of York. Friendly and helpful family business. - Lots of breakfast choices. The large full English would satisfy the hungriest of people. Good vegetarian choices too. We all enjoyed our stay. However the stairs would make it less accessible for less able people. Our party were fine our oldest member being 75.
- Mandy (7/5): -
- Janet (7/5): We all had a great time - It’s quite central and staff are lovely Na
- lisa (8/5): Real old pub with real old fashioned service - Really real! From the property to the staff. The breakfast was good and hot and plenty. A short walk to the city centre with plenty of amenities nearby. The bedroom was clean and the bed was comfortable. It’s a pub and it’s old fashioned and a bit dogeard. But it’s fine if you like a pub🙂
- mrslblair (8/5): Friendly stay in the city - Friendly welcome, excellent location, and a good breakfast.
The room was large and clean. The mattress could have been firmer. There was a water boiler / heater that made intermittent noise.
- Beverley (8/5): -
- Nicolas (7/5): - Breakfast was fantastic, staff was very friendly. The shower didn't work and the key didn't lock.
- Matt (7/5): -
- Terence (10/5): - Excellent breakfast, staff very attentive and pleasant, had an excellent stay .
- Margaret (10/5): Excellent accomodation - The location is perfect and the staff are exceptional they go above and beyond. Nothing
- Aguilera (9/5): Lovely staff, nice clean rooms and excellent location! Good food too!! - Everything very clean and cozy, spacious and the staff were absolutely amazing Nothing.. I loved everything
- Carolyn (10/5): Staff very helpful and friendly - Right in the heart of York
- Sals (6/5): Great location/Poor room - A brilliant location with all staff being very friendly and helpful. Included breakfast was pretty good apart from the very squidgy sausages. The condition of the room very poor. Mould in the bathroom and mould smell too. Linen/bedroom had a stale smell. We were really disappointed and think it is in dire need of refurbishment. Overpriced!
- dean (7/5): Good place for the money 👍 - Room was absolutely fine , staff were good , breakfast was good and the location was spot on The hot water tank in our room ( no.3) constantly refilled which was very noisy
- Davie (8/5): -
- rachel (8/5): Cosy stay with a great location - Friendly and great location. Spacious rooms with a bath. Fab breakfast. I definitely would stay next time I’m in York!
- Tony (9/5): -
- Mandy (10/5): Perfect - It was a perfect choice to fit the city
It gave us a great experience Nothing
- Werrett (10/5): - Fantastic staff and facilities, great beer choice and the breakfast was 10/10 Parking but cant be helping with how close it is to the centre
- Tanya (7/5): Daughters birthday - Lovely location and staff.. 2 of the 3 bedrooms had comfy beds.
Clean The double bed was lumpy, strings dug into my ribs, and hip.
Every time some flushed toilet, my toilet made a horrible noise.
- Maureen (7/5): Super position for all the attractions, good breakfast, clean room, helpful staff. - Staff very friendly and helpful Reported shower not working , nothing done about it
Think advert should say 3 flights of stairs.
- Paula (10/5): Exceptional -
- Phil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gary (8/5): Very good -
- Margaret (4/5): Disappointing - Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast Accommodation was in definite need of an upgrade
- Kane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrea (10/5): - Lovely, helpful people! The beds were so comfortable with amazing soft sheets. Breakfast was very hearty that one didnt ned lunch. It is above a pub but you couldnt hear the noise below. Karaoke night was so much fun. Very close to everything without being in the center. 10min walk to the train station. 2 min to york minister, the wall and hop on hop off buses. Highly recommend!
- Eileen (8/5): Would definitely stay here again! - Very near to York Minster cathedral - about 10-min. walk at my slower pace. "Full English" & "Small English" breakfast were good & quite large - didn't need any lunch. The hot water for shower was a bit of a problem - had to run the hot tap in tub until it warmed up, then turn shower on & tub tap off. In this process, the water in tub was too hot for my feet to stand in the tub to do this. Seemed to be plenty of very hot water, once it got warmed up for the shower,
- Harm (7/5): Lovely quirky family run pub/hotel just outside of the York city gates. - An absolute JEM.
Staff (particularly Clair) familiy run (and owned?)
Spending time in the pub is like watching an episode of east enders..
TheWiteHorse is a quirky pub/hotel on the edge of the York city walls.
A short walk from the railwaystation, and everything in ancient York was in walking distance
The premise itself is on an intersection of busy roads so expect some traffic noise.
Our room (nr5) was hugh for these types of rooms. Large bathroom, and since its aan old building there are small steep squeaky stairs, but All in all, we would book this definitely again.
Thanks Team With Horse. We had no housekeeping, we had to make the beds ourselves. Supplies ware not replenished, and had to ask for clean towels.
The premise itself is on an intersection of busy roads so expect some traffic noise.(many sirens of ambulances and fire trucks.
Bathroom had a bit of moulds on the ceiling, and curly wallpaper, the water systems work with pumps and has a specific way of handling it, but that is the charm of a pub/hotel.
- Janis (9/5): Superb -
- Lynda (10/5): Excellent stay. Would stay again. Staff really friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble . - The location was ideal for the train station and the racecourse.
The facilities in the bedroom were great. Plenty of tea, coffee, shower gel, shampoo etc.
Breakfast was fantastic. Plenty of choice and well cooked. Nothing.
- Paula (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mcaughey (9/5): darts and poker - staff were tremendous from chef to bar staff all excellent.hotel was maybe not noisy due to traffic but location excellent also.locals drinking in bar all very friendly as well. all fine
- Konrad (7/5): Good location with just around 10 minute walk to anything in the city center (trains, museums, etc). - Friendly and accomodating staff. Cigarette smell wafting into room occasionally. But it's above a pub so it's kind of expected.
- P (7/5): Overall this is a good value for money place to stay, very close to the city centre and attractions. - The rooms clean, comfortable and well stocked with coffee, tea etc. The staff were all great. Breakfast was also good. This is a lively active pub with entertainment at the weekends. It was loud which didn't really bother us, but others may not appreciate it.
- William (10/5): Five star treatment ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Comfortable, clean room. Amazing location. Really couldn’t be better. The pub downstairs is great. Staff very welcoming and considerate. Includes REAL breakfast - full English - and not just cereal or muffins or whatever. One of my favorite places I’ve stayed on vacation. Water could’ve been a little hotter in the shower. I guess.
- Robert (7/5): Did what we requested and required - Very good.
Cooked fresh It's what you get for the price
- Aileen (8/5): perfect location - perfect location, everything within walking distance. staff were very friendly. nice size room, lovely big bath, breakfast was good. not much choice of cereal, but cooked breakfast was enough for me. Steep stairs especially with luggage but member of staff offered to help. plumbing a bit noisy. room needs blackout blind. decor needs freshening up but it is a room above a pub and you get what you pay for.
- Molly (6/5): Pleasant - mostly friendly staff. phone no is discontinued phone discontinued, lots of steps up to room
- Janett (5/5): short break - location staff internment. stairs upto attic, cold room
- Beck (8/5): Had a lovely time in York will definitely be back. - Breakfast was lovely served by very helpful friendly staff Personally I think pub needs a bit of TLC. Rooms comfortable but a bit outdated
- Stead (10/5): Exceptional - The landlady went above and beyond to make our stay as pleasurable as possible and went out of her way to get us to our concert when we couldn't get a taxi due to a traffic incident very friendly and made us feel at home Thank you clare Just needs the rooms updating but would definitely stay again already looking for the next break
- Malc-at-York (8/5): Good traditional town centre pub - Exactly what you want if you are a traditional pub-goer in York. Handy location, traditional ambience, good prices. Staff are excellent (with one exception), but on the whole a very good experience. Nothing ‘special’ though, does what a traditional town pub should do and the White Horse dies it well.
- Kieron (7/5): Good location for a relatively low price, bit of upgrading would greatly improve. - Friendly staff, great location, fair pricing, decent breakfast. Mattress not best quality, can feel springs etc, general decor getting ready for an update, plumbing in bathroom on some kind of pump system for nearby rooms which is very noisy at times also running water noise from possibly a tank in a cupboard.
- Mwinstanley (10/5): Perfect pub - Clare and her team made us feel at home. Nothing was too much trouble. We were given great advice in regards to dining out. The rooms were perfect, and the breakfasts were delicious. The pub is situated just outside the wall near the Minster, super location, with everything in walking distance. N/A
- TheSuibhne (2/5): DO NOT STAY HERE - My bedroom had a water plumbing system directly within it, in a cupboard (which did not close) near the door. The sound of water passing through it made sleep impossible. The toilet in my ensuite had a broken mechanism, causing the toilet to refill every ten minutes. This noise also kept me awake. I paid £110 for 2hrs sleep. The floors in the bedroom are filthy. The beds are uncomfortable. There is no indication of amenities such as wi-fi. The pub itself is dank and unwelcoming, especially when compared to how warm the rest of the pubs around Petersgate feel. Frankly, I'm disgusted by the experience I had in this establishment. I hope no one has to suffer through staying in Room 3, as it ruined my whole trip. DO NOT STAY HERE.
- Ryan (1/5): DO NOT STAY HERE - Nothing. Even to say the location is to ignore that there is another, better BnB directly across the street. My bedroom had a water plumbing system directly within it, in a cupboard (which did not close) near the door. I hope no one has to suffer through staying in Room 3, as it ruined my whole trip. DO NOT STAY HERE.
- Jonathan (3/5): Nice place hampered by noise levels and lack of empathy shown by staff. - Breakfast was good, room was clean, bed was comfortable, location was good. Venue held a karaoke night until 1:30am my first night, followed by playing dance music loudly on the speaker system until similar times on the second and fourth nights (I only stayed four).
All of this music was loud to the point that it reverberated through the building and made it impossible to sleep.
On the second and fourth nights I challenged the barman and asked him to turn the music down. This worked on the second night (although I had waited until after closing time by this point) but not the fourth, when the barman refused to turn the music down. This was then resolved by the duty manager who I then phoned, but only a half hour later after closing time anyway.
The duty manager also claimed that music could not be heard in my room on multiple occasions across my stay when challenged on the issue, making it seem as though I had made the problem up.
I asked for a refund and was offered only £80, while I had paid £560 for four nights.
Overall, a poor experience.
- Nichola (10/5): Lovely LGBTQ friendly hotel - Really well located on the doorstep of the city. Had a very friendly welcome and staff were accommodating & helpful throughout. The site said it was LGBTQ friendly and it really was as a LGBT couple celebrating a wedding anniversary we felt very comfortable here. Breakfast was really nice & a decent size. The room was a good size, clean and had a nice view of the art gallery. Evening entertainment was lively & enjoyable. Will be staying here again when we next visit York.
- Barbara (10/5): - Friendly staff , nice room comfortable
- Steven (8/5): Very good -
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful night away for boyfriends birthday.
Staff put balloons and banners in the room, and also a complimentary bottle of Prosecco…☺️
Great hotel with fantastic staff
- Martin (4/5): Don’t expect much - When we arrived we were told we had to still pay for the room, not a good start. I showed them the email to say we paid, which they accepted. We were shown to our room by the manager, we were told that breakfast was 9-10am, who has breakfast that late when you want to go out to explore?. So we went out to eat breakfast. We were told it was an English breakfast, no other information but that. On entering our bedroom, it was a pleasant, ok looking room but there was no welcome letter to give us any information on what they supplied. Being in a pub/Inn there was a fair bit of noise in the evening, but saying that we both slept well. So if you want a quiet night probably best not stay there. We stayed for two nights and the tea/coffee/milk wasn’t replenished so we had to buy our own. On departure, there was no place to put our key or to check out, the pub door was locked, there was no one about to take our key so we had to leave it on the stairs for them to find. To be fair, it was an ok stay just needs some TLC from management but saying that, not a place we’ll stay again
- flightlevel310 (4/5): Lovely Pub, Rude Service - Genuinely a nice traditional pub, but never in my life have I been served by someone who didn’t utter a single word though the whole process of buying drinks; nothing at all, not even a “thank you”, they just walked away once the beers were on the bar.
Not the best way to make us want to stay, not the best way to attract customers. And… the staff used both bar stools as their coat racks so customers couldn’t sit at the bar.
Worst pub service I’ve experienced in a long, long time.
- Beverley (8/5): Brilliant location, staff absolutely brilliant.. hotel very dated & in need of modernisation - Staff were brilliant, so helpful & kind .
Location so central Very steep stairs , plumbing needs sorting.
Whole place needs a make over
- tessr884 (10/5): Heroes don't always wear capes - A massive thank you to Gavin and another kind gentleman who helped my daughter when she had a flat tyre the other day. Glad to see chivalry is not dead after all.
Thank you so so much for all you help.
Will definately be back for a drink to thank you properly for your heroics.
- Philip (10/5): amazing - staff were absoltly amazing an really welcoming
- Steven (2/5): Very poor - Breakfast ok location good No lift.very noisy up to 3am in morning .breakfast late both mornings. 3flights of stairs
- Ionela (10/5): ❤️ - The staff were amazing! Even though the building was old, I didn't mind as it felt authentic and provided a nice town experience. Everything was great, and the staff were very polite. The breakfast was excellent, and there was a fantastic live music experience!
- PGfromBeaverton (2/5): Buyer beware. - This establishment does not care about people, only money. They will not answer phone, message or emails. Be sure you really want to stay here before booking. You will be charged for any changes or cancellation the cost of one night no matter what. Greedy is all I can say.
- Linda (8/5): Excellent - Location was close to all main attractions and shopping. Breakfast was excellent
- Ian (7/5): Ok - Room just needs a refurb Bathroom
