Guest Reviews
- Laurence (8/5): Nice hotel in the centre of York - Nice old hotel in city centre, in an area filled with shops, pubs, and restaurants. Near the Minster and the wall, and other interesting sites. Tricky to find the hotel, because you have to go through a short "tunnel" from the main street to get to the Court. Staff members were friendly. There is no restaurant, and hence no breakfast (as clearly advertised). However, there are plenty of places nearby for breakfast and other meals. The area was a bit noisy, especially in the morning.
- Maxine (10/5): Great weekend - This was an amazing location, great place. Clean and staff were amazing. Would definitely visit again.
- Michelle (8/5): - The room was nice and clean. Perfect location, right in the heart of York. Everything was within easy walking. I do have mobility issues and i found it easy.
- Steven (10/5): - I come here to stay while I attend a film festival and it’s so convenient for the cinema. I have returned three years running. It’s a great hotel and the staff are genuinely lovely.
- Vivienne (10/5): - Great little hotel in the heart of York. Very close to the shops and only 5 minutes from the theatre. Staff very friendly. There is no lift and the stairs are fairly steep maybe a problem for those with mobility problems but it has bags of character and charm
- Rebecca (10/5): - Love the hotel and the location inside the walled city of York.. We were in room number eight, which gets lovely afternoon sun.
- Brian (10/5): Cute and Convenient - As a small, tucked away hotel in the midst of the city, Judges Hotel fit what we wanted n visiting York. History was literally written on the walls. It is tiny and the stairwell is somewhat difficult to navigate wit our travel bags, but the experience was worth it. Situated just blocks from everything, we enjoyed our stay.
- Steven (10/5): - Very quirky and fun!
- David (10/5): Overnight Stay - Great little hotel situated in the center of things. Small room #5 but very clean and tidy. Great shower, quiet, fantastic staff. Recommend if you want to be in city centre. Taxi from railroad station is best with easy walk if Coney St. closed after 1030am.
- Duane (4/5): - Room was a claustrophobic basement room. Window into a deep inescapable window well. WiFi was unuseable
- MICHAEL (8/5): - Nice little hotel in the old District of York. Would definitely stay again.
- Lisa (10/5): Comfy central hotel - We had a great stay at Judges court. The location is very central, the bed was comfy and it was a powerful shower.
The paintwork was a little tired but otherwise a great place to stay.
- PAUL (10/5): - A clean room with a comfortable bed, extra pillows in closet, ample space, friendly/ helpful reception and reliable wifi. My only critique is the room could use a fresh coat of paint.
- Richard (8/5): - Lovely.
- Pat (10/5): Good choice - Well appointed easily accessible room with everything we wanted. And they held our luggage until check in time
- Emma (10/5): Excellent city centre hotel - Booked a 1 night stay over in York on our way to Pendle, we had room 3 on the lower level. Getting a large suitcase down the 2 flights of stairs is a bit of a challenge but the room itself was well equipped, clean, lovely powerful shower, comfy bed and coffee making facilities. Perfect for what we wanted
Check in was available when we turned up early which was a nice surprise.
Very quiet with it being tucked away between shops.
- Philip (10/5): - The hotel is unique, that's why we picked it.
- Karen (8/5): - When we first arrived, I thought "oh, no". Lobby is dark, entire place is tucked away, no A/C, and no lift. We had to haul our luggage up 37 steps of a NARROW, spiral staircase.
Our room was clean and adequate, and actually had the biggest, nicest, newest shower of anyplace we've stayed so far. (4th hotel of this trip)
There was a fan in the room, and they brought a second one upon our request. I'll have to admit, that even in August, with the window open and the fans, we were COMPLETELY comfortable and slept well.
The location, right in the city center is very convenient. So, despite my initial skepticism, this hotel was completely satisfactory and a good value.
- Thomas (10/5): - A very nice and cozy stay :) thanks!
- Mike (10/5): - .
- Purnima (6/5): - The location was excellent and unique, the room was well furnished and charming- however the person that checked us in was rude and we felt very unwelcome. The hotel runs hot..no A/C so whilst they provided a fan the room was hot and stuffy. There was noisy airvent in the bathroom that refused to shut off making for a very noisy stay. They had warned us of construction noise in the morning so we had expected that. The email communications were more friendly than the staff.
- Daniel (6/5): - Decrepit. Needs a total makeover. Some paint and grout cleaner would go a long way.
- Helen (2/5): - Absolute disgrace to Yorks other wonderful hotels !!
Dated, dirty, do not address complaints, and request for owner contact. Appeared to be black mould ariynd window- gealth hazard!! Needs to close and total refurbishment. (Full review on trip advisor)
I think Expedia shiukd remive this hotel from its site - I frequently book hiteks via Expedia and bever had a bad experience, but thus hitel should not be promoted by Expedia as it reflects badly on them. Expedia dud iffer full refund if hitel agreed with room state - byt tgey were not going to do this - obviously inly interested in taking your money and not providing even a basic clean entry level hotel.
Extremely disappointing and frustrating experience- spend your money at one if the many lovely York hotels
- Jeffrey (10/5): - Quaint setting, recommend
- andrew (8/5): - Location was great, also the theme of the hotel with the artwork on the walls in the room was very nice, our room was at the front of the hotel room 8 and it was quite loud with the windows open, especially when the bin men came and delivery of beer kegs to other properties, the fan in the room was a nice touch as it was quite warm
- Karen (6/5): - Parking is approximately 10-12 minutes away and £25 for 24 hour stay.
Staff were really nice and helpful.
As the building is the old court, the windows are different sizes and the blinds difficult to block out daylight. No air conditioning. Nice molton brown products in bathroom
- Lance (10/5): Great place and location - The location is really cool and in the right area for the visit. This is a historical site, so not the most up to date amenities. No room service or food. No air conditioning and it was fairly hot while we were there.
- Katie (8/5): - Perfect position, right in the centre of town . The room we had was needed a bit of tlc , and no air con . Good value for the price .
- Jennifer (8/5): Quirky hotel in a perfect location. - This is a lovely boutique hotel in the centre of the city. Perfect location for shopping, theatres and restaurants. Its ideal if you are travelling by train or public transport but if going by car there is obviously no parking. We parked on the Marygate park but it was £22.50 for about 20 hrs which would be expensive if you were to stay a few days. There is no restaurant but tea and coffee making facilities provided and plenty of eating places close by. You can also get drinks delivered to the room. The rooms are large and stylish and clean.
- Joanne (10/5): - Fantastic location and great staff in this delightfully historic hotel, highly recommend.
- Roger (10/5): Great little hotel - Very well located and friendly little hotel. Friendly staff and good value.
- Steven (10/5): Second stay better than the first! - Second time staying here and was even better than the first. Was on the top floor this time, lovely big bathroom and very quiet. Receptionists were super friendly on check in and check out. Thank you and see you next month!
- Amanda (10/5): - Such a cute Hotel, in a very central convenient location. Our room was ready for us to check in early which was a lovely surprise. Clean, comfortable and quiet. I highly recommend this hotel and would stay again if im ever back in York. Thankyou.
- David (8/5): - Overall good room was hot but a fan is provided would of been nice to see a mini fridge in room to keep our drinks cool
- Deborah (10/5): - Lovely small hotel in the middle of the pedestrian area of York. Easy walking distance to everything. Funky decor but modern bathroom and very clean. Highly recommend
- Verified traveler (6/5): Very Basic - Room was nice enough but a bit basic, considering we were in a luxury king room. But then the whole hotel was basic with no restaurant and the bar was a fridge in reception. Some staff were friendly others not so much. My main complaint is the lack of cleaning. There was a safety pin on the carpet when we arrived and it was still there when we left 3 days later. The towels were changed but the bathroom wasn't cleaned. I don't know how Judges Court got to be a 4 star hotel. Also someone should check the photos on their website as it certainly doesn't look anything like the photos. This is very misleading. Definitely won't be returning.
- A K (10/5): - Incredibly helpful staff. Superb room. Can't recommend highly enough!
- Steven (10/5): - Tucked away from the bustling streets so it was nice and quiet. Perfect for a stay in York!
- Natalie (10/5): - Great central position. Historical. Didn’t like wallpaper in room 10. It was creepy lol. I love the hotel though. Fantastic!
- Susan (8/5): - This is a charming property. Our room was in the lower level with a low, vaulted brick ceiling which was fine for us but would properly be challenging for anyone who is tall. As well, because it was in the lower level, it was a little musty smelling and wifi access was spotty at best.
We still thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the location in York is great.
- Margaret (8/5): - Great location in town but it was a small hike from parking lot. Close to shopping, bars and restaurants. You do need to climb very narrow steps so don’t bring a lot of bags. No a/c. Room was nice and bathroom had been remodeled and was super nice.
- Robert (10/5): - Absolutely unique property with great history. In the heat of York, walkable to all sites and great pubs. Not for you if looking for modern hotel, but great is you don’t mind a few ghosts. Excellent bedroom, bed and modern bathroom; average size with reasonable storage space. Fun stay.
- Kelly (6/5): - I chose this location because the pictures looked luxurious. I wanted to experience the feeling of York. It didn’t dawn on me to ask about air conditioning, which it did not have. It also didn’t occur to ask about an elevator, which it did not have. So after toting our carry-ons up three flights to the top floor, no air-conditioning was a shocker. The only reason we continued to stay was because it was just overnight, and luckily it was cool outside. The location is phenomenal, but York is easily walkable. If you have a knee problem, or like air conditioning, I would not recommend. The room is much smaller than in the pictures and the furnishings looked shabbier. The bed was comfortable, but I didn’t really sleep well because I had to leave the window open and the sun rose at 5 am. If you’re young and none of this bothers you, the then I would recommends it is in the heart of the city.
- Amelia (10/5): - Property was in a great location right in the centre but it was still quiet in the room.
Everything was great- nice staff and lovely bed. Nice toiletries provided.
The only down side was that the room was really hot. There was a fan but it was still really hot.
- Joanne (10/5): - Lovely hotel, quiet, very clean. Location fantastic. Could not improve as competitive price too.
- Anne (8/5): - Might have ended up with a room not yet renovated. Bed was extremely squeaky, with the smallest movement. Carpet stained, cracks in the walls cobwebs in the corners. Expedia says it has room service, it hasn't.
Location and staff amazing though. Bedding soft and very clean. Different room, might stay again.
- Julie Ann (10/5): - Fantastic city centre location. We were able to leave our bags which were placed in our room when we checked in later in the day. Staff were very friendly and efficient. Room lovely and bed very comfortable. Overall a very enjoyable stay.
- Sophia (4/5): Disappointed with our room - We stayed one night, just two of us. Before booking, I read really good reviews and I liked the character, quirkiness and history about the hotel.
Hotel looks great, however I think we pulled the short straw with room 1. It was at the very bottom of the building, very low ceilings. Although I did like the character, it was a tunnel at some point in history. So we felt like we was sleeping under a bridge. The bathroom smelt of damp, the extraction fan was useless. Lots of patches of paint touch ups all over and cobwebs and scratches etc. I couldn’t use the wifi, signal so bad. But wasn’t suprised given where we were.
Room very hot, opened windows in night , no breeze came through because the windows were under street level and behind a wall.
Coffee machine water tank was broke, the lid kept falling into it. Difficult to see what you are doing whilst making a brew as it was in the corner, behind the wardrobe and it’s all black. Could do with more lighting or clever lighting to make the space feel brighter and less like you in a prison cell/under a bridge.
I think if we was put in another room , I would be writing a different review as the hotel has great character and theme and the staff who we met were friendly. The location is spot on for shopping, pubs and restaurants.
We didn’t complain as we was only sleeping for one night and didn’t spend any time in the room, only to get changed before going out at night.
I don’t think it was worth £150 we paid.
- Oliver (10/5): - Great location. Quiet. Quirky.
- angela (10/5): - Ptivate Courtyard right in the centre of town
- Keri (8/5): No parking near - Had some charm. Would not stay again due to no parking and having to cart bags a mile from the closest car park. Also steep stairs to cart bags up
- Mark (6/5): - Great location, room a little uncomfortable. Fridge would be a good addition. Awoken by window cleaner at 7am
- Verified traveler (4/5): Uncaring - While appreciating this is a listed building, we were not aware that access to our room would be up a very narrow steep winding staircase we were offered no assistance whatsoever to get our bags up the stairs even after telling them we were in our 70s and my husband has bad asthma. One person behind reception just carried on sitting there stroking her dog, the other just kept saying we were on 2nd floor and no lift. Very unhelpful
- Michelle (10/5): - We loved our stay at Judges Court. Our room and the location were excellent. The only down side were the stairs, which were difficult to navigate with a suitcase and bad knees.
- Ross (10/5): - perfect location with everything a short walk away. Quiet, clean with plenty of character and the wall art in the rooms were great
- Phil (10/5): - Beautiful building, walking distance from rail station.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Quiet quaint little hotel - I stayed at Judges Court for one night and really liked its central, yet tucked-away location. The hotel was mostly clean and well-kept - a little tired in some parts of the bedroom, but the bed was comfortable and it was lovely and quiet. The ladies on reception were very friendly and helpful when I asked about a recommendation for dinner, and with storing my bags on the day I checked out. Overall, I would recommend.
- Stephen (6/5): - Judges Court is in a great location—an easy walk from the station and right in the City Centre. However, the hotel itself is small and lacks basic facilities. There was no radio or iPod docking station, and the homemade biscuits advertised on their website were missing—not a dealbreaker, but still disappointing.
The room needed some attention: peeling paint, signs of damp on the walls, and an uncomfortably hot temperature. While fans were provided, they were noisy and ineffective.
Housekeeping was also inconsistent. On our second day, the floor towel was neatly folded, but the bed was left unmade. Coffee pods were replaced, yet the cups looked like they had only been rinsed and were still dirty.
Overall, this did not feel like a 4-star experience. I wouldn’t choose to stay here again.
- Norah (10/5): A lovely bank holiday break away - Lovely little hotel, we stayed for 3 nights and had the option to have our room cleaned and new towels everyday. We arrived 2nd May and after checking in we realised our room was on the top floor with no lift, my husband isn't in the greatest of health following a heart attack and when I explained this one of the lovely girls on the reception she moved our room to a move accessible room for him and even helped carry our suitcase back down the stairs, she really went above and beyond for us and would like to say a massive thank you to her, unfortunately I didn't catch her name however but she was working on the afternoon of 2nd May. The rooms are lovely, modern and clean. The hotel is in a perfect location.
- Yaojun (8/5): - It is in a very convenient place. The staff are very nice. We also liked the bathroom which is clean and much newer than the other part of the room. The room doesn't have air condition. It can get hot.
- Clare (8/5): Great Location! - Great location! Room was large and clean with a big bathroom (hidden behind a panel in the wall which was cool) and excellent toiletries. There was a big TV with access to Netflix etc, coffee machine, fridge and free WiFi. The small courtyard at the front of the hotel was really cute and I wished we’d had time to enjoy it more (with a bottle of wine!).
The only real negative we found was that there is either a bar next to the hotel or behind it and although it wasn’t noisy, our room was in the ground floor and there was a table of people sat outside our windows which didn’t feel very secure when we then went out as the old windows are just slid up/ down to open and close so nothing would have stopped someone getting in the room when we left. Perhaps if there was a safe in the room it would have set my mind at ease a bit.
- Kate (8/5): - Great hotel and staff were super friendly. Excellent location. Only issue for me as a solo female traveller was that there was no internal lock on the door so it felt unsafe and exposed. I ended up moving furniture so that there was something against the door to prevent someone using a keycard and gaining easy access.
- Leigh (10/5): - excellent location in the heart of the city
- Philip (10/5): - Unique property
- Andrew (8/5): - Could do with a update now it's looking a bit tired.
Mold on shower tiles Damp coming through the walls stains on the carpets and damaged bed base.
- Verified traveler (8/5): History in every direction! - Quiet location in city center. Helpful reception.
- Alan (4/5): - Judges Court image comes across as a bit dark, all about crime, punishment and justice. Our room (no. 7) appeared to be panelled, but was painted white, completely destroying any atmosphere.
Both toilet roll holders were loose on the wall.
The tap installation by the was hand basin was loose.
While the window recess was cushioned, the rest of the room's furniture was a bit basic. Fine if it had been a prison cell, but this was supposed to be a judge's quarters. There was only one chair and it had no cushioning at all.
Overall, the room was a bit basic and a bit tired for what it cost.
- susan (10/5): - Updated bathroom was super nice.
- Helen (8/5): - This hotel is packed with original features but I didn't see any of the amenities it has to offer. There is no lift. And due to the age of the building, it's quite loud so either bring ear plugs or be a heavy sleeper.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Keep away from room 1 - Enjoyed York , disappointed in our room which was in the basement cellar (memories of Liverpool cavern club). No views at all had to have the lights on all the time we were there .. the staff were really nice and friendly.
- Steven (10/5): Very comfortable and great location - Perfect location in the heart of York. Need to have your eyes peeled to find it down the passageway off the main road. Room, large, quiet and comfortable. Staff all lovely. Only negative was very small bathroom, smallest in the hotel apparently so not ideal for someone over 6 foot.
- Stephen (6/5): OK but needs a bit of TLC - Friendly welcome. Room on 2nd floor up narrow windy stairs. OK for us but there’s no lift. Room clean but small and basic with damp on outside facing wall. Woodwork paint peeling. Bathroom modern, clean, well stocked. Great central location
- Darren (10/5): Weekend stay - Amazing room and very relaxing
- Marie (8/5): - Great location, friendly and helpful staff. Rooms a little tired
- MICHAEL (8/5): - Very noisy with a beer delivery at 6 am next door don’t stay on a Wednesday night
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Can't beat the location which was excellent. Room was comfortable, but was downstairs, so felt a bit like a basement room. But overall a good price for a great location.
- Alison (10/5): Central and personal - Lovely personal hotel. Just off the high street and yet so quiet! Bed was comfy and bathroom clean. Would definitely staff again with such friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Service was incredibly friendly and warm. A lovely welcome to York! The room was in the basement so pretty dark. And while the facilities and cleanliness were good, it all looked fairly shabby.
- John (10/5): Great city centre hotel - Really nice hotel in the middle of city perfect for a city visit.
Staff were really friendly and helpful and would definitely look to stay there again.
- roberta (10/5): - Lovely historic building in a private gated courtyard off high street shopping area. Despite the busy streets outside, our room was very quiet. Staff were always helpful. Because of it being a 1700s building, there is no lift so be prepared for a narrow winding staircase to access most rooms.
- James (6/5): - At first glance, this hotel is quite impressive. However, the attic room we were given was extremely hot, even in March—hence the two floor fans provided. I can’t imagine they would be sufficient in summer, even in the UK. The room also lacked privacy as the blind didn’t properly cover the window, letting in daylight and floodlights at night. Noise was another major issue, with an outdoor party in the courtyard amplifying sound. It wasn’t until 2:30 AM, after we called reception, that they finally asked other guests to quiet down—why not sooner? The central location is a plus, but be aware that parking is at least a 10-minute walk away.
- Leanne McPhee (10/5): Great locations and beautiful hotel - Amazing location and lovely staff nothing was too much trouble, we’ll be back again soon.
- Craig (4/5): Disappointing - Hotel is looking really tired now, what once was a premium stay is now sorry to say average stay , with premium prices
Fantastic location which was a bonus
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good location - Excellent location but the room was cold. Radiators hidden behind long curtains. Dirty paint work on bathroom door.
- Lauren (10/5): Judges court hotel - Stayed in judges court hotel for 2 days , we was in room 6 with the roll top bath , room was lovely could not fault and the reception staff were welcoming . Had everything we needed also close by to the shops . Me and my partner were doing our paranormal investigations in our room and safe to say quite a few spirits came through especially the little boy named William who sits on the chair in the reception 👻. Haven’t been to York since I was a child and now returning 22 years later it’s fun knowing the history of York and it’s very interesting. We would highly recommend this hotel it’s was a great experience.
- Nicola (10/5): - Very quirky very clean excellent staff
- Carole (10/5): - Room was clean .warm and comfotable.big size shower room.Staff were very polite.
The bed was comfotable. It was very quite in this hotel which was lovely.
Easy access to train and shops.
- Danielle (10/5): - Lovely stay for myself and daughter, within easy reach of everything
- Isabelle (8/5): - Very central property, very convenient for visiting the city. Not quite the 5* we expected but was ok for one night. Our room was down under ground level with an interesting view over gutter pipes and it was quite noisy - both from inside and outside the hotel. We only booked one night, it is unlikely we would have stayed longer than this.
- Alison (10/5): - Quirky and quaint. Beautiful rooms with highest attention from staff. Would definitely stay again.
- Abbas (6/5): Nice but nothing special! - Nice little hotel, nothing special! Glad I didn’t pay full price for it as was expecting more from the experience ! Showers not very warm. Pleasant receptionists.
- Shirley (6/5): Weekend Away - Pros: location very central to railway station, shops and attractions. Good communication prior to stay, able to store luggage until room ready and access slightly early as room ready on arrival. Bed comfortable, warm room, good shower, fluffy towels and heated bathroom floor.
Cons: decor overall very tired, ground floor room with window directly next to pub garden (luckily it was Feb and very cold otherwise would have had to keep window/curtains closed for privacy and safety). Noisy at night either due to external fan (didn't stop until 3am Sun morning) and/or internal fans from rooms above. Despite fab location wouldn't stay again. And yes we know it's an old building and city centrally located.
- Karen (10/5): - Beautiful hotel, excellent staff. Would strongly recommend a visit
- Gareth (6/5): - The room was nice if a little old and creepy with an old 18c cartoon image on the wall. Staff were very polite, the room had a very good shower. But the bed was very uncomfortable and the room was very noisy. Both inside and out. Didnt really sleep for 3 days (2 nights) as you could hear everything. The room temperatures were either very hot or coldp, for both of us anything in between was impossible to guage with the central heating and were asked to keep the window open in the welcoming document which is frankly rediculous. We averaged a couple of hours sleep and when i wope up on the second night at 3AM if we would have a backup would have checked out there and then. Alright place but has issues and would not return.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Cheap and central - Hotel was quite difficult to find as lots of the road outside was dug up .
Original person in reception was not very friendly .
We were on the too
Floor and the stairs were very steep and winding .
Room was fine if the paint was a little in need of a spruce up .
The beds were comfortable if a little close together .
The room was very hot even with the radiator turned off and the window open .
Bathroom was volcanic .
If you are looking for cheap and central then this is for you .
- Casey (10/5): - Great hotel great location
- Jane (6/5): - The room was not ready when we arrived but the lovely cleaner finished it for us so we could get in early. Unfortunately the next day we were just going out when the cleaner came in. When we arrived back in the bed had not been made, and there was an empty bottle in there so it hadnt been cleaned at all. Just to make a point clear it was not the same cleaner as the day before.
- Ciara (8/5): - Enjoyed our stay here. Our room was a good size and had everything we needed, great location and friendly staff. Could have done with a bit of paint in some areas and stains on base of bed and net curtains but didnt effect our stay. Would come back :)
- John (10/5): Last minute trip - Excellent location.
Good facilities in room. Smart tv and fridge a bonus
- ashley (10/5): Excellent hotel - Perfect central location. Clean rooms, comfortable beds and a lovely walk in shower. Couldn't ask for more
