- jaminb2024 (10/5): A GEM IN THE HEART OF PLAYA DEL CARMEN - This place is such a gem we had a airbnb cancel on us last minute we ended up at Alux and was so happy we did my mom is a germaphobe and lucky for us this place was extremely clean and the building is very well kept .Location Location Location it was so good too with it being close to beaches ,5th ave grocery stores, and restaurants but just far enough away to avoid loud bars and parties. Such a great value and the staff Stephania and her husband speak Spanish and English and where so helpful with local advice and just amazing people will defiantly be back .
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great old quaint hotel perfect for the one night we needed !
- Brent (2/5): - Hotel Alux Playa del Carmen is cheap. That reflects the entire experience. One gets what one pays for. This hotel room was outdated, basic and quite unfunctional. There was only one sheet on the very hard bed, no comforter or blanket. The bathroom had no washcloths or bath mat. The sink in the living area did not work. The hotel staff speaks little to no English. After hours, a toilet plunger was not available, beware the hotel plumbing, it does not work properly. My first floor room had windows that did not lock, making me feel very unsafe. The shower drain did NOT drain, leaving inches of water in the bathroom. Bath amenities (shampoo, soap, etc.) were cheap and ineffective. Hotel facade is morbid. Walking in the area and seeing other, upscale hotels, made me regret my decision to stay here.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Mexican traditional. Plain and quaint, but adequate. A little Spanish is necessary, as staff struggle with English much like I struggle with their language. Spanish immersion. Close to downtown, Walmart, and the beach. Good value for the budget traveller.
- Ken (8/5): My stay in playa - Good hotel. Clean and good location.
- Marc (10/5): Excellent option - Excellent location, in the middle of everything, yet not in a noosy area, family owned hotel, nice people, spanish style... (no refrigerator in the room)
- Allen (10/5): Good deal in fantastic area - Great value with large room and helpful staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The hotel is
- Marc (10/5): Great location and price - Great location close to the beach and in a calm area. Staff is very friendly, always smiling and helpful. Nice building, Spanish style decor, not fancy though...great deal for the price. Strongly recommend.
- Roy (8/5): - It was a good comfortable room. My only issue is that they don´t accept credit cards.
- wallyaussi (6/5): great location - I just spent 4 nights at the Alux in Playa. It is an inexpensive hotel because it is rated a 2 star and as is, cannot be higher.
Positives: ***location ***cleanliness*** friendly personnel***large room***hot water
Negatives*** WiFi is awful ! A weak signal ( DSL service?)**I went to Starbucks for a good signal*** you have to input a code every day for access
rock hard Mexican mattress*** no closet or drawers for clothes***no room or front desk safe for valuables*** multiple small inconveniences about the room
The experience was OK- talking with Abraham (front desk) was a good chance to use my limited Spanish. I do not know if I would return because of the bad WiFi and hard mattress. There are a few other hotels with a similar rate to try.
- Julio (10/5): - Muy agradable, cómodo y muy buen ubicado
- 640melindaa (8/5): Simple and nice hotel - Hotel Alux is in a good location just behind the Main Street.
The rooms are quite large and spacious compared to others around. It's a little run down, but for the low price, it's a pretty good hotel if you want somewhere cheap.
Wifi didn't work very well in my room, so if I wanted to use it I had to stay in the reception area.
- Justin (8/5): Great place to charge your batteries - I enjoyed my stay here. The room was bigger then I thought it would be and so it was cozy. The staff were friendly and nice and honest with me. Very close to cocobongo but still quiet. Good location. No complaints.
- tinabean117 (8/5): No frills - Our family had been satisfied enough to return to this hotel 4 times! The location can't be beat: walk to the beach or 5th Ave. That being said, don't come to this hotel expecting much more than a bed and private bathroom. We have had no complaints about thr cleaning services. This is a no frills location, but the price reflects that!
- HUGO ENRIQUE (10/5): ACTUALIZAR INFORMACION DE HOTELES - BASTANTE BIEN,TODO BIEN , FELIZ Y MUY A GUSTO SOLO QUE QUISE COMUNICARME AL HOTEL PARA AVISAR A QUE HORA LLEGARÍA HACER CHECK IN Y EL TELÉFONO ERA DE UNA CASA , ENTONSES ME PREOCUPE DEMASIADO AL PENSAR QUE MI RESERVACIÓN NI SIQUIERA EXISTÍA, SOLO LES PEDIRÍA QUE ACTUALICEN SU INFORMACIÓN DE LOS HOTELES.
- aborgman (8/5): Cute local hotel with good prices - Quaint little hotel with an open lobby. Everything is well maintained and cleaned. The bed even had had towel art, unusual in budget hotels.
The room was a good size and the bed was comfortable.
Brush up on your Spanish, because the staff speaks little English.
A nice, inexpensive hotel - in a great location.
- fabionb (10/5): Good hotel - A real maxican hotel runned by a family. It's a budget hotel but the personnel is very friendly and the quality of service and the rooms are very good . They don't speak alot of English but you will manage. One tip just get used to the Mexican ways. The hotel is 50m from the tourist area.
- RobertSDF (8/5): A Very Good Value in Playa - I have used the Hotel Alux for overnight stays in Cancun for many years and always found it a good value and good location when I am traveling by ADO bus. This was my first visit at Alux in Playa del Carmen and pleased with my choice.
The location was ideal for my needs since I was traveling by ADO bus and it is very close to the terminal on 20. And while I try to avoid 5th Av., for those interested, it is two blocks away. For me, just about perfect.
I found the rooms to be a really excellent value. Everything well maintained and spotlessly cleaned. I don´t recall ever seeing whiter sheets on any bed. I even had towel art, which I don´t often see in budget hotels. The room was very spacious and the bed comfortable. A chair would have been nice. Plenty of electrical outlets and a well lighted room. As some have mentioned, it would have been a bit brighter to have a balcony room but , for the price, no complaints.
One thing I will avoid in the future is being given a connecting room. Always noise from connecting rooms and no exception here. Also , as mentioned, it seems to be a family run place with Mom at the front desk and a number of kids playing in the lobby and in front of the hotel. But not noisy so no problem for me.
Little English spoken by staff but ok for me--this is Mexico. All very friendly and smiling.
If looking for a well locaed budget hotel, I highly recommend.
- kontje (6/5): Good budget hotel near La Quinta - I've been to Playa several times and it's such a great town, though getting more and more gentrified and expensive... This simple, cute hotel is in a great location, 3 blocks from the beach, one block to 5th Ave. Playa beaches aren't quite what they used to be. A Tulum-Playa mixed vacation would be A#1.
- LynnY544 (8/5): Very Clean Budget Hotel - Very clean, great hot water and water pressure in shower. Pretty bare bones in the room but didn't spend much time in there anyway. Staff very friendly; not much English spoken. Water cooler. A/C. Small bed for two people. Our room was on the ground level; would have preferred higher floor but none available.
- miketW1656YF (2/5): Noisy! - Small family owned and operated. Clerk was busy breast feeding baby and taking care of a litter of young ones who roam the bottom floor. No English speaking staff.
No breakfast or coffee available.
Rooms are not very well cleaned, and provide very little storage.
Hair and sand left in the shower from previous guests. Toilet did not get cleaned during our ten day stay. Fecal stains left untouched.
Incredibly noisy at all times!
Nearby dance clubs, traffic, staff's kids and other guests are heard round the clock. Bring ear plugs.
No pool available.
Location and price is fine, but there are several other hotels and even hostels that have better amenities at this price range. Will not stay there again.
- Pirre68 (6/5): Budget hotel - Stayed here for two weeks. Had to change the room after two nights because of the smell of mould and room had no balcony no view, dark, could hardly open the window, no space for that because of the other building so close. Room was cleaned every day and towels and sheets changed. Hot water on & off, sometimes had to ask for it, but ok. Staff was ok, couldn't speak much english. Location was very good, quiet and close to the action fi you wanted that. Lots of good local and cheap restaurants close by. 5th avenue expensive, have a drink there but eat few blocks away. We payed for the room much more than it was worth, but we had a package holiday trip. Book via internet or wait for the offers. List price was 800 pesos for room no balcony and 1000 with the balcony. And choose definitely room with the balcony !
- lukste9 (8/5): great budget hotel - I was there 2 weeks in February.Really nice staff, every day cleaned room but staff speek a little bit english.Problem with WiFi.Very low signal at room.Shower had hot water and pressure is OK.
Close to Qiunta Avenida.Quiet Neighberhoud.
- skkydriver (8/5): Clean-Great Location-Good price - Looks a little different from the outside, doesn't look like a hotel at all. But the rooms are pretty good. Clean, good shower. Staff was pretty helpful and nice.
It's about a 5 min walk from Coco Bongo's (night club), and all the other main clubs and bars.
All the main nightlife is within 5 min's walking.
There are a couple taco shops that were good. And a convenience store next to it.
Hotel was small but definitely a great deal for the location and the service.
- Thunder4Eva (8/5): Great little hotel at a reasonable price. - Found this hotel by accident when I was picking up my car rental. Booked it in my phone and paid only half (44 USD) of what the hotel rates are if you book directly in the hotel.
Love the location, 2 blocks away from the nightclubs, restaurants, and tourist hangeouts. The ocean is about 4 blocks away, but seems closer since there is a lot to see on the way. The hktel itself, even though is so close to the nightlife at Playa del Carmen, it is very quiey and peaceful at night, all thanks to the street it is located at. It is located in a 1-way little street, a little hidden so be prepared on how to get there.
One negative is the parking; there are only 2 spots for parking in front of the hotel. I was lucky to always find an empty spot, but still consider your options beforehand. I saw several vehicles parked on tge street that had a ticket on the windshield.
Note for booking hotel online: We had to pay the hotel upon arrival, even though I filled that info when I booked. It seems the hotel staff has priblems getting reservations from hotels.com and expedia.com. Hopefully I was not charged twice for it.
Aspects of the hotel:
Hotel is very small, rooms are small too but cozy. Free wi-fi. A/C unit is in every room (a must in Playa del Carmen, beware not all hotels have them). I would've liked more towels to be provided. Room looked clean, nothing fancy. You will notice this hotel is not very high tech physically or in the way it is run, but that is part of the experience, I did not mind that at all.
One negative, I saw several tiny ants near the bathroom, its not a deal breaker though. Also, know that the room keys are to be left at the front desk always before leaving, that is their policy. The doors in the hotel are locked at night, but just knock tge door and someone from the staff will open the door for you, there is always someone in charge. Checkout is earlier than I am used to by the way.
- 14erann (8/5): Good Location & Quiet in Playa del Carmen - Stayed at Hotel Alux at the beginning and end of our recent anniversary trip to MX. It is very clean, the staff friendly and helpful, and a bargain price! It is very close walking distance to beach and 5th Ave activities but quiet at night. We were also able to walk from and to main bus stop and Collectivo stop in downtown Playa. Their providing Filtered water is a plus to fill water bottles, if you are like me and hate all the plastic bottles of water one must purchase in MX.
- KerryVDZ (8/5): Nice hotel if you are on a budget - I spent a night here with a few cycling friends while we regrouped before our cycling adventure around this part of Mexico and Belize. The hotel was nice and clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. They allowed us space to assemble our bikes and also allowed us to keep our bikes safely in our rooms over night. They even allowed us to store our bike boxes there in a store room for two weeks so we could pick them up on our return. I would gladly stay here again.
- Holgrs1 (6/5): Holliday - This hotel is not the best, but ok. They bring they're children to work everyday, and its many of them. Hotel closes down at 23:00 every night so you have to knock on the door if you are coming home "late". The staff is not the best. We traveled with a travel agency from norway (star tour) on a cheap ticket so we got what we paid for. If you want a kidsfree holiday this is not the hotel for you.
- dprez1984 (6/5): Clean but no frills - We were happy with the one night stay overall. We got the special rate of $35 a night. The room was clean but the water doesn't get very warm in the shower. We had a quiet night and near 5 Ave. and that's what we wanted. I appreciated that they had filtered water available to fill up our bottles.
- JesseAmbrosio (8/5): bueno bonito barato ! god, clean and cheap ! - I reccomend this for rest only, it´s fine, poeple friendly, cheap and clean :)
i stayed for a couple of nights and I pay single room only 40 dolalrs per nights which it was good
and of course people are friendly they have security box at the reception.
- 426Kiwi426 (8/5): Great experience - The place is well located: a walking distance from the beach and right nearby the main street, yet far enough to avoid the noise at night. The staff was very nice and welcoming. The hotel is charming also simple. The room was clean and comfortable. The only negative element are the thin walls; we could hear the people next room when they were talking a bit loud or showering for instance. Still, we found that this was a minor inconvenient considering the price of the room and the hotel's location. We would recommend to anyone looking for a not too expensive but clean place to sleep in the area.
- JesseAmbrosio (8/5): good cheap and clean choice!!!! - Hi GUys, I used to go to Playa del Carmen twice per year
I am mexican and like to visit different hotels and resorts with all inclusive service.
Let me tell you this time I wanted to do something more personal. I went in December for 4 days to Playa del Carmen, and found this hotel close tot the 5th Avenue HOTEL ALUX,
I want to keep simple my review CLEAN, FRIENDLY STAFF, CLOSE TO THE 5TH AVENUE( where all the bars, rest, discos are located) and CHEAP!!!!
Yes, even thougth it was December, this htl keep their rates always, that´s why always is fully booked, but you can make reservations by email and they respect everything. You should try this, rates are 2 people in standard double 65 dollars approx.
I will definitevely will go back when I want a place where to stay and if you want continental breakfast you pay 3 dollars more ( coffe, juice, butter, toast, milk) I like this kind of stays as I can have lunch or dinner wherever I want. You should try :) any question do not hesitate to ask me !
