Guest Reviews
- D923ADmaryf (6/5): Ok for one night - Rustic hotel with very thin walls. Impossible to sleep without earplugs when your next door neighbour is snoring! Luckily the earplugs are provided from the hotel and can be found in the room. Nevertheless, not very pleasant if you can hear everything from the next room...
The bed, however, was very comfortable and we had a very spacious room.
If you have a room on the first floor you might want to pack a small overnight bag. It is quite risky to try to haul a 20+kg big suitcase up these very steep and small stairs. Could become a problem for eldery couples, so better ask for a room where you don't have to take the stairs. Dinner was ok but not exceptional. Breakfast could be better, not much choices. Restaurant in the cellar was not really cosy.
- KECanadaTor (10/5): Classic Wonderful Hotel - Tremendous hotel! Magical. Lovely geothermal pool. Elegant dining in an epic restaurant setting. Wonderful classic old rooms. Helpful staff. Didn’t want to leave.
- Bhavani (10/5): - Loved the natural hot springs spa which was open till late and then again before breakfast.
- Terri (6/5): - Nothing really bad about it, it’s just small with less amenities than usual and is a bit more dated
- 30helenw (10/5): Great - A lovely hotel, very comfortable, close to eateries and good position for walks etc. Good breakfast and the service was really good.
- Amy (10/5): - Be aware this hotel is older, the main building is from 1820, as such it has quirks of older buildings (squeaky floors, thin walls). With that being said, it was very clean and comfortable and a nice change from the usual chain hotels.
- Vicki (10/5): - We are two couples traveling together in Iceland on the Ring Road. We absolutely loved this hotel. One of us was reminded of the old hotels in England he stayed in. The room was comfortable and clean. We loved the spa on the patio and we ate at the restaurant in the hotel and had a great meal. They even had a vegan option (one of us is vegan) made with vegetables from Icelandic greenhouses. The beds were comfortable and it was a quiet area. Staff were very friendly. Highly recommend.
- Eva (6/5): - Room was small and did not have room for opening luggage and moving around
- Shelly4Shore (8/5): Enjoyed a night in the annex - We were on the 2nd floor of the annex, which required carrying our luggage up steep steps. The room itself had a lovely front view of the water and was quite spacious with a sitting room. The room was clean, beds were comfortable, the tv and WiFi worked perfectly and there was an easy to use espresso machine in the room as well as a selection of teas. The bathroom was an odd layout, very narrow with the shower tucked in the corner and a step up to get into. Anyone not fit would have a hard time getting in I believe. We didn’t use the geothermal hot bath as it wasn’t hot enough for us, but the location is perfect as it’s just a quick walk from the room. We ate dinner in the basement restaurant and it was a lovely experience with a terrific meal. Breakfast was also very good, having the usual Icelandic assortment. As someone sensitive to smells, I was irritated by the overuse of air fresheners. The smell in reception made me sneeze, and the one right outside our room was so overpowering I had to relocate it. I began noticing them everywhere and realize they must be in use to mask something less pleasant. The strong scent was far too overwhelming for me though.
- STEVEN (8/5): - Quit small hotel away from the city
Feels like home
- judgy4you (6/5): Aight - This hotel is charming and visually appealing.
Starting with the positives: the hotel is very clean, the beds are comfortable, and the pillows are excellent. We had breakfast there, which was good, and I loved the restaurant’s decor.
However, there are some downsides. The hotel is expensive, there aren’t enough parking spaces, and the door to our room had a very stiff lock, which might need fixing.
But the biggest issue was the smell inside the room. While the corridors had no noticeable odor, the room itself had a strong, mold-like smell, though I didn’t see any visible signs of mold.
- Udai (10/5): - The property is conveniently situated within walking distance of various dining establishments.
- ivtim (10/5): Adorable old house well worth a stopover - Nicely decorated old house (we were staying in the main building) with well-functioning everything (friendly and welcoming staff, decent décor, nice toiletries, well-stocked coffee station in the room, WIFI, clean but a little bit too dark rooms with a few nice historic features).
We had a snack in the restaurant in the evening, and we did have breakfast - both went well, I would perhaps consider adding local cheese for breakfast (would definitely make hotel standout compared to the competitors).
This is one of the oldest houses in the country, so please be aware that it's not as sound-proof, as one might've wanted (but there are earplugs for light sleepers).
The sink in the bathroom was a little bit worn off and shall be lined up for a replacement.
You will need to take stairs - it's an old building, there's no elevator (and I didn't dislike it - just a thing to keep in mind when making a reservation).
- Casey (8/5): - Charming is the perfect word to describe this wonderful hotel. Sometimes charming is a bad thing, but in this case charming included all the modern conveniences, except a mini refrigerator. There is not much to do in this town, but the hotel room was worth the stay. We loved the swan and elephant towel sculptures as well. The only reason a 5-star review was not given is that anyone with a physical disability will have difficulty with the steep stairs inside and outside the hotel. Otherwise, the stay was fantastic.
- BALDEV (10/5): - Does not look like much on the outside but quite charming inside.
- Louise (10/5): - Heritage hotel that was very charming. Hot pot was nice. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
- mauricio (8/5): Great stay and great pool - Hotel is in a renovated old building which has a nice vintage feel with modern amenities. Nice breakfast in what I think used to be a bar 100 years ago, great decoration and the big plus is the pool outside with included bathrobes! Close to dining places just by walking.
- melanie (10/5): - This is a sweet quirky little chalet style hotel. It was built in 1833 ish and has some cool historical photos on the walls. It was fun to stay here for a night here after staying in more typical boutique hotels the rest of our trip. The receptionist was friendly and helped us find a place to eat near by when we arrived late, that we walked to. Breakfast was served in a tavern type space and was also wonderful. It felt very safe as well. The town it’s located in appears to be primarily a fishing village which is nice to see up close. It’s a short walk to the water from the hotel.
- TheBottomLine (10/5): Very cool old hotel - Tons of character in this "Oldest hotel in Iceland". Hotel dates back to the 1880's. Exposed old beams and a charming old feel along with wonderful husband and wife innkeepers made for a nice overnight stay on our ring road trip. Not much going on in this town, but good place to view northern lights. Due to the shortage of wood back in the day this building was disassembled and rebuilt multiple times before settling here. It has a cozy bygone old US west type feel with smaller rooms having obviously old wooden beams. Breakfast was plentiful and tasty. Spoke at length with both husband and wife owners about the interesting history of the place. They made great suggestions and even made phone calls to set up future lodging for our journey. Not super fancy but highly recommend.
- Laura (10/5): - Beautiful room, very unique from 1800’s. Breakfast was really good too! Very friendly staff.
- Gísli (10/5): - Nice old house that has a beautiful charm.
- FamilyTraveller13 (10/5): Great place to rest after a day of travelling - This hotel was excellent. Easy check in with pleasant and professional staff. Our room was very clean and had a comfy bed with lots of pillows! The bathroom had plenty of water pressure and lots of hot water.
Breakfast was excellent! Plenty of tasty options and fresh filtered coffee!
Value for $$ was top notch! Would recommend.
Thanks

- Russell (8/5): - Was dark but worked well.
- JoninaMaria (8/5): Outside rundown, but inside cosy and comfortable - The last time I stayed at this hotel, I had the same thought: why did I order this hotel? It looked so lovely on the web, but when I arrived, it was so old and rundown, and it was pretty expensive. However, when I leave, I have a good feeling and good memories.
The houses are old, one from 1884, I think, and the new annex from 1950, I think. You have to go outside to get between the two houses. Everything is so run down on the outside. But inside it is warm and cosy, with no bad smell. The room is lovely, with new windows and a comfortable bed.
Service is satisfactory, and breakfast is simple but fresh.
Strangely, everything in the hotel is in English - nothing in Icelandic, and the staff doesn't speak Icelandic.
- peteclissg (10/5): Wonderful - Enjoyed our 1 night stay at this old fashioned style hotel. Our room was in the annexe, so was more modern, had a large bathroom. Well maintained and clean. There was a hot tub available to use outside.
We had dinner here which was superb. We were told the owner was the chef, and the meal was one of the best in our 3 weeks in Iceland. The restaurant is in the original hotel and downstairs and full of character, and staff all excellent. Breakfast was also excellent.
Very much enjoyed this hotel
- Michael (10/5): REMOTE BUT GOOD - Stayed in the original 1884 section of the hotel which is quaint but comfortable. The hot tub was a welcome treat after a long day’s drive. A delicious breakfast spread is included.
- M368CJbonnies (10/5): Cozy and comfortable - This was the 6th hotel we stayed at during our 10-day drive around Iceland and was our favorite. The staff was fantastic and we took advantage of the laundry service which was worth every cent. The room was very well-appointed and the bed was quite comfortable. The restaurant was delicious and Ragnar, our waiter, was an absolute delight! We would absolutely stay here again!
- JennyM624 (6/5): Old fashioned hotel - Very old hotel, and quaint ! We had room 1 which was up very steep stairs. The room was large but dim and very old fashioned ( uncomfy) furniture.
We like to have modern comforts - plugs by bed etc, and these were all lacking at this hotel. But I guess that’s not what they are aiming for….
Breakfast was in a dingy cellar- again not our cup of tea …… the food was absolutely fine but it was the strangeness of the decor ( stuffed animals etc ) which isn’t for us.
- chewat (10/5): Unique, full of character, great food - This is given in the context of a unique, old hotel (1884) in a small town in northern Iceland. Full of character, exposed beams and a local flavour. The rooms are not large but very comfortable. There is a nice small hot tub in the courtyard. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was simple but good quality. The evening meal is a choice of one of two mains and a dessert with coffee for a fixed price. The food was home style but superbly cooked. Prefer this any day over cookie cutter modern hotels.
- Fredrick (8/5): - I stayed in the Annex building. All in all it was fine. Just be aware that the rooms are small and close together. You will hear your neighbors (and they will hear you:). Breakfast a little underwhelming.
- christopher (10/5): Great place - Lovely stay
- Sunshine36636198412 (10/5): Something different and quirky - Really enjoyed our stay here. We had rooms 5 and 6. Lots of history to the hotel. Our rooms were clean and had great beds and breakfast was basic but good. Strange to be given ear plugs. However the walls are really thin and can get noise outside. If you are wanting for a hotel different to the norm. Give it a go.
- Kenneth (10/5): Quality Nights Stay - One night on our Iceland travels, lovely hotel, comfortable bed, breakfast hit the spot. Staff where very helpful, definitely stay again.
- Glenn (8/5): - History
- Elke (10/5): - Very nice old building. Especially the breakfast room was very unique. Rooms were nice. Small hot pot available in the between the old hotel and the annex.
- Byron (10/5): - Convenient stop on our journey around the island. Friendly, helpful host at the front desk. Easy parking directly in front of the building. Great breakfast.
- Eugenius1984 (8/5): Nice Hotel, Great Breakfast, a bit dirty room (behind the scenes) - The rooms are very large and have a lot of space.
The staff is also very nice. The breakfast is just great and there is plenty of everything. The breakfast room is unique and quaint. The pot is a dream. It's in a great location, parking is available.
I would have preferred not to look behind the nightstands, they've never cleaned them. Bathroom could also be cleaner. The drain smells in the bathroom. One of the most expensive accommodations on our trip.
- John (8/5): - Beautiful historic main building. We were in the annex- spacious room, clean, great water views. Strong sulfer odor to the sink water.
- lolly61 (10/5): Oldest guesthouse fabulous stay! - A beautiful old hotel dating back to 1820….with plenty of modern rooms! The manager was friendly and very obliging nothing was too much trouble. Rooms nicely decorated with all you need. The thermal pool was a marvellous bonus… great way to finish the day! Good breakfast as well.
- 2coats (8/5): OK Hotel. - We stayed in the cottage/cabin which was comfortable with all amenities including sofa. But seemed like an unfinished project, even the outside was half painted!
3 single beds with small bathroom.
The wifi was weak and therefore effectively useless.
The curtains offered no blackout, also effectively useless.
The small communal hot pool was nice, but extremely slippery getting in & out - an accident waiting to happen!
Breakfast was average with no hot food.
- V5490KYpaulab (10/5): Would have liked to spend multiple days here - We were doing the grand circle and only had one night here, but would have like to spend several nights here. The beds and pillows were comfortable, the curtains provided sufficient room darkness, and the bathroom was lovely with heated floors. There is a thermal spa outside with nearby dry-heat sauna. Dinner and breakfast were delicious with many options and quality ingredients.
- 946campbellf (10/5): Great quaint and quirky hotel - Really liked this taste of the ‘old world’ for a one night stay during our trip round the Route 1. Nicely furnished with period fittings, right down to the light switches. Staff were fantastically helpful, even offering a microwave when we couldn’t get a hot meal in town. Good peaceful night’s sleep. Would recommend.
- Teresa (10/5): - Lovely place, rooms so quaint and beautiful. Restaurants across the streeet. The historic building has been restored exquisitely.
- Martin (10/5): - Absolutely Charming old hotel, renovated with modern conveniences. Friendly and helpful reception waited for our later than expected arrival. Generous breakfast in an 1820’s room full of antiques and history.
- Irena (10/5): - The property was very different mixing the old with the new. The walls were very thin so we could hear the people next door.
- alan (8/5): Nice hotel - This is a really nice hotel. A little dated but that adds to the charm. I would recommend it and I would stay again. It’s only down side was the walls in the room were paper thin and you can hear everything from the other rooms
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not for me. - Did not like it at all. I find it disrespectful to guests that the doors to the hotel are physically locked until 3 pm. Room might not be ready. But not to let people in a lobby? Rain, cold, use the bathroom, leave the luggage, simply to sit down? No excuse. Also the strong smell from the restaurant permeates the whole building. It was definitely too much for me. The shower head is very high. Had to ask for help. There is only a shower curtain. The shower water fills the whole floor of the tiny tiny bathroom, eventually leaking to the room. Very uncomfortable. The location is good. Breakfast cost is $18 pp.
Friendly stuff once you are inside.
Not coming back.
- Jerome (8/5): - Our room was in the Annex instead of the. main building and may have been less appealing as a result. The room was clean but spartan, with no toiletries except soap. The room had no dresser, with limited space in a small armoire for clothes. The breakfast was very nice in a lovely room in the original building. The hotel also provided nice bathrobes, especially helpful if you want to use the natural stone hot pool.
- heng-kit (8/5): - Its an old building but updated. Day we check in hot water was not working in that part of town.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - What I would expect in Iceland, it did not disappoint.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - After flying into Reykjavík this was a perfect first stop on the ring road. The only problem we experienced was that the room was hot and because we were on the main floor and needed the shades drawn to sleep, we really couldn’t open the Windows without shades flapping. We were there in a heatwave so it likely is rarely a problem. Spa was a nice way or relax with wine after a long day of travel. The staff went the extra mile to call us when they found my credit card in the robe pocket. We drove back and picked it up after visiting Hofsos and the Siglufjordur and Hilary. Wonderful first stop on the ring road
- Verified traveler (10/5): Icelandic highlands hotel - A great place in n a historic building. The staff were friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Located in a quaint town with a coffee shop and cafe. The property is quiet and breakfast was perfectly simple.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We were staying at the Annex building and our room was comfortable, modern, with no signs of wear and tear. Amazing bed and wonderful view. The breakfast room in the main building was the best! It looked like a museum, with its stone walls and antiquities. This is a wonderful place with history. We enjoyed our stay very much.
- Oory (10/5): great place - I found the place just by browsing through.
An old structure, beautifully arranged as a hotel, comfortable, convenient, with a hot tub in the patio.
nice breakfast.
I would stay again
- Glenn (10/5): Super quaint and cute. - Probably our favorite hotel of the trip. Quite old, but restored nicely with ALOT of character. Really enjoyed the hot spring they have. If someone is in it, wait just a bit and you will certainly be able to have it for yourself. Breakfast is quite nice in the super cute and antique downstairs dining area. If you're anywhere in the NE area of Iceland, you should plan a stay at this excellent hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Cute place to stay. Staff was fun to talk to. Can drink coffee and tea in reception area and chat with staff. Has a little hot tub available to use. Walking distance to the 2 restaurants in town.
Room is clean and well outfitted.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Ladt at checkin was very friendly.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Iceland ring trip - vert clean and comfortable. It was on the small size particularly with 2 pieces of luggage. Our room have a view of the harbor which was very nice.
- Caroline (10/5): - Awesome hotel. building was lovely old charming, one of our favourite places we stayed in Iceland. private geothermal tub too!
- Kevin (10/5): - Marked by a lovely old fashioned feel, we were thoroughly pleased with our stay. Restaurants were only a short walk away. The breakfast room was marvelous and the breakfast itself was perfectly adequate.
- Canadian (4/5): - We specifically emailed to say we were not a couple and were 2 friends needing separate beds. Yet the room they gave us had a completely see-thru bathroom door and mirror reflecting into it, so wherever you were in the room you could see into the bathroom and no one had ANY privacy. Not even a fan in the bathroom. The floors, walls and ceilings had no insulation and we could hear everything in the rooms adjacent, as well as anyone in the staircase. Very disappointing.
- Glen (8/5): Great option. - Not a ton of options here, so we were pleased with this historic hotel. Neat history and the annex, where we stayed, was up to date and met our needs.
- Vivian (10/5): Great!! - Beautiful and with great history abd character. It was great!!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very expensive even for Iceland for the quality of the room.
- David (8/5): Old hotel nicely renovated - We stayed at the hotel as a layover between activities we were participating in Iceland. it is an old hotel, renovated, with a new annex. Wifi worked well and staff were extremely helpful. Breakfast was adequate but less was offered than other hotels we've been to this trip. The room was compact but clean and functional. Shower space was small and water had the common sulfur smell of hotels in the area. They have a communal hot spa that was a bit slimy and only 100 degrees F. All this said, there were some good restaurants closer to the hotel, the area was quaint, and it was nice to visit. It had a 3* sign at the entrance that was probably due to its age. That said, I'd recommend the hotel for its service and transitional location. Wifi worked well. We actually steamed a Netflix in the evening on it
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Amazing staying in such an old property. Just a shame the town was a bit drab!
- Robert (10/5): - Nice location
- Lesley (10/5): Great hotel but expensive - I think this is great place. Very helpful staff. Great rooms and hot tub, the only drawback is expensive,
- Shannon (10/5): Lovely - Cute, clean, beautiful place with a great hot spring bath out back.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The hotel was nice and comfortable. the staff was accommodating and professional. the bathroom was small and the shower stall very tight. also they do not have screens in Iceland, so there were flies in the room, restaurants, etc
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We stayed at the hotel for just one night and thought it was a good experience. Clean rooms, nice geothermal tub and great breakfast. Its walkable to everything in town. Friendly staff.
- Lisa (10/5): Charmingly situated between Myvatn and Reykjavik - The town is definitely a bit depressed economically and not a lot going on. That being said the Hotel Tindastoll is a bright light in the grey town. The hotel is on the national register and is a quaint and charming place - a strong contrast to a lot of iceland's very modern decor. Dagmar - the manager/host of the hotel is extremely helpful and nice. Our rooms were large and comfortable. The hotel has a nice "sitting room" that allowed us to relax with a glass of wine as we read and reviewed the vast amount of pictures we had taken of the amazing countryside. I also took advantage of the jacuzzi right off the reception area/sitting room. The breakfast in the morning was classic Europe/Iceland - lox, breads, skyr, coffee and of course, "cod liver oil".
- Andrew (6/5): Overpriced hotel - Way overpriced for what is offered. Stayed in 4 star hotels for less. Smallest shower we have come across. Would not stay there again. Of all our stays in Iceland we would rate this as the bottom. One plus was the room was clean. No place to put your cases.
- j&e (6/5): Only place in town - Very tiny room. Wasn't told we would be in annex until day we checked in. Excellent breakfast. Way overpriced for room we were provided. Clean. Would recommend only because it is one of very few places there
- Mandy (8/5): charming place - Great little place. Not much in town as far as restaurants go. Only one place open the night we were there. Room was charming, staff was friendly, had a good nights sleep
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lots of charm - This was the nicest hotel of my trip. Lots of character and charm in the old building, but all the modern amenities. Staff were great, as was the breakfast. Because it is an old building, there is that noise factor, particularly from upstairs.
- Phil (10/5): lovely hotel with great character - The hotel was really nice with great character. Room was very spacious. Breakfast was great. Staff were very helpful. Overall was very impressed with hotel. Very conveniently located.
- Robert (8/5): - Basic. OK for a night to stay during journey around ring road.
- gary (8/5): Nice hotel wonderful staff. - Very nice older hotel. The staff was awesome. The stairs were straight up and the shower was small.
- Lara (10/5): A+ - Cutest hotel ever! Service was amazing.
- Verified traveler (4/5): I wouldn't stay here again - Very expensive for what it is
- Antoinette (8/5): Easy check in, friendly staff - Easy check in, great breakfast. Hotel has a geothermal pool on site.
- Andres (8/5): - This is a hotel established in the 19th century so it has a lot of history. You feel like you are back in time when you enter the hotel. It is very comfortable and the staff is very welcoming. Definitely would book it again.
- Shannon (8/5): Convenient and clean hotel - This location makes a nice stop along the Ring Road if you are driving around Iceland. There are a couple nice local restaurants, but not alot else in this town - which makes it very similar to every other town in Iceland that is not Reykjavik.
- Verified traveler (8/5): historical - This hotel has some history, history of 150 years.
It still has original parts and you can feel that you become part of it.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Quaint hotel - It is a nice place to stay in the north. In a town with a grocery store and good view of the harbour. Family friendly.
- Patrick (4/5): The pictures look great. - But the pictures aren't the whole story. We booked here thinking it'd be a nice little spot in a nice little town. All the pictures make it look great and rustic, which some of it may be. But our room was in the newer "annex". And the room was terrible. Small and bland. No charm. The beds were the most uncomfortable I have ever slept on. Totally not worth it. So if you book here, make sure it's not in the annex.
- Hilary (10/5): Lovely old hotel in good location - The Hotel Tindastoll is a lovely change from the standard characterless rooms found in the 'chain' hotels. We stayed in room 3, at the front of the hotel with views towards the fjord. This is an old building with no lift and steep stairs, creaky wooden floors and gloomy en suite bathrooms but we loved it! Breakfast was plentiful and delicious and we had dinner at Olafshus, just round the corner - soup and salad bar included with main courses and a great range of pizzas and burgers as well. Our favourite hotel so far!
- Johnny (8/5): Nice Hotel - Staff are friendly and very helpful
- Anthony (8/5): Nice little town - The room was very comfortable but it would be better if there were more power points. There was only one in the bathroom. Otherwise it was good.
- Graham (10/5): Oldest hotel in Iceland - One night here and all was good. The charming staff told us that it is the oldest hotel in Iceland. It has creaky old comfortable rooms with tons of character. Nice bar / dining area downstairs where breakfast is served and a hot-pot (design based on Snorri's pool in Reykholt?)out back. Dressing gowns are provided for guests, as is free tea and coffee in reception. Lovely area of Iceland and can recommend a trip to Hofsos and its amazing pool.
- Richard (6/5): To Annex or not to Annex - We stayed in the Annex, not the old, original hotel. If you are into sleeping in an old-timey, vintage antiques museum, you might enjoy the main hotel. I would not have. The Annex was fine. It is a separate building next door. Very plain, nothing fancy. The room was a bit larger than comparable hotels we stayed in across Iceland. Not many hotels to stay in this town, so this may be your best option. No elevator.
- joyce (10/5): Nice place - Small town and perfect location for walkabouts. We had two rooms in annex that were modern, clean, and comfortable. Nice rock lined hot springs and a heated towel rack for drying wet suits.
- medora (10/5): - We rolled in late- about 10.30 at night. Check in was easy and the hotel is very quaint and comfy. I enjoued a nice small outdoor natural spa with my morning coffee. We also had a nice brakfast on the lower level. There's a micro brew bar just around the corner and the owner/brewmaster Arni was friendly and accomodating.
- martin (10/5): Place to stay - Nice historic place
