Guest Reviews
- ong (6/5): - very basic
- barryp875 (2/5): Avoid avoid - I have been travelling Asia of and on in 2017 and 2018 and have stayed in exceptional rooms on a budget and others that are bad but priced appropriately. This room is awful. Smelly, dirty and downright disgusting. Owner didn't seem to appreciate how unacceptable it is. Thank God I only have one night.
- krazejesse (6/5): Cheap and cheerful - We have stayed here before when it was Western House Hotel. The rooms are basic, but have air con and a wet room. There is WiFi available. The bathroom is a wet room. The hotel is situated right next to a temple, if you are a light sleeper you will be woken by the Gong which is hit in the early hours of the morning. We find the hotel to be in a good location, as it is in a quiet area but within walking distance to the main sites and attractions within the old town. There are tuk tuks and songtaews available to go further afield. This hotel would benefit from having cold drinks and snacks available to purchase in the reception area. (free tea and coffee is available) The reception area is a nice large comfortable area.
- allspice68 (8/5): More than adequate - Mali's room is right next door to a temple, so be prepared for gongs at 4:30 in the morning when the monks wake up. The place is tucked back in the narrow-street neighborhood, but only one "block" from the main road. Very quiet (except for the gong at 4:30!). The lobby is spacious and very tidy. The rooms are spacious and clean. Great mattress! Hot water, decent A/C, slightly spotty wi-fi, great staff! I would stay here again!
- jenhammo (4/5): Not the best - It’s in a great spot. Close to food, transport, attractions etc. I often stay in this area because it’s easy to get places, either on foot or by songtaew. Compared to places of the same price in the area it’s a pretty poor choice. It was clean but there are water stains on the ceilings and the bathroom was moldy. The bathroom floor was covered in water all the time. The water was constantly dripping. The towels had holes in them and along with the linen were a grey colour rather than white. They had been washed but were just old. The second day we had no hot water. I would definitely try elsewhere next time.
- chrisd8017 (6/5): Average - Average for single traveller.
Weak air conditioning.
Noisy neighbours.
All in all got the job done and was able to use this location to sleep between site seeing excursions.
Cheap and Great location and close to various sites
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Not much far to the airport and easy to walk to the center of Chiangmai old town. Staff are very kind and service mind are Excellent!!
- ryanbastys (10/5): VERY PLEASANT STAY - We enjoyed our 7 day stay in Mali's Room Hotel (Western House Hotel). The staff were very friendly and helpful and answered any questions we had and were always smiley when we passed through reception. There was no safe in the room but we were able to store valuables at reception. However we felt the room and hotel was fairly secure.
The room had a fridge wardrobe free water balcony and we got new sheets towels and toiletries etc every day.
The location was perfect as it's located in the old town in Chiang Mai. We were in walking distance of the main attractions bars shops and restaurants etc while the area around the hotel was quiet so we could get some sleep.
I think the room we stayed in could do with a bit of painting and decorating in some places and the lobby could have more on offer i.e water, drinks food and snacks etc but for the price we paid this hotel ticked all the right boxes for what we needed and was definitely good value for money (while it isn't a five star hotel).
The hotel should update google maps to the new name of the hotel as taxis tuk tuks etc only knew it as western house hotel.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at this hotel and would recommend to anyone staying in chiang mai who is looking for a reasonably priced hotel. We would like to thank the staff for making our stay relaxing and enjoyable. We would definitely stay here again
- clariceheslin (4/5): Not great - Visited here with two of my friends, we were backpacking so not very fussy. To be honest, it's okay if your going to be busy with activities all day and just need a bed to lie in at night. Rooms are very basic, has tv, fridge, air con &water. Beds are far from comfortable unless you like rock hard ones &the sheets were torn in ours. Also our shower didn't have any hot water just cold. If your an early bird then you don't need an alarm as the cleaners I think like to be slamming doors at 6am-7am consistently. Literally there's no soundproof doors/walls and they have no problem in making lots of noise. Wouldn't bring any kids here! Wouldn't stay here again.. :)
- Khli (8/5): Quiet hotel on a side lane at old city. - Clean basic room and mattress. A small fridge in the room. Coffee is a self service at the lounge ground floor. Value for money. Walking distance to amenities. Street foods just opposite side of main road.
- 90jetg (10/5): Tourist - Very good for me, single travelar. Free coffee is huge. Beds are comfy and free water. Nice location with lots of food and 7-11 across the street. Management is helpful. But window views could be bettet.
No tenia ascensor. No me gustó nada.
- montelii (4/5): Dirty and noisy - We booked this and stayed for 2 nights, the good things is that the rooms have AC and the beds are ok. The location is ok If you like to walk around a little. We stayed in the 1 floor, it was dark, noisy at night and all kinds of insects crawling in the bathroom, bathroom also had mold. The staff was not rude, but they don't notice you And is surfing FB rather than say hello to you. They also forgot to book our taxi to the airport that we askt for the day before, luckily its not a long way to the airport. You can find better in the same pricerange. Hotel is also called "Malis room" would not stay here again.
- Randy g (6/5): Quite room in Chang Mai - North side of the square, close to all activities but far enough to be quiet at night. Staff was helpful for booking scooter and tours. Free coffee and tea and hot water 24 hrs in sitting room .
- Verified traveler (4/5): Didn't have a nice stay - The hotel room i stayed you can tell they don't change the bed sheets and pillow cases, especially the bathroom
- Verified traveler (4/5): low standard hotel - The bed sheets, pillows are not clean. There are flies, ants everywhere in the bathroom.None of the taxi drivers knew how to get to the hotel.Taxi Apps cant locate the address of the hotel.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Poor wifi - Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi Poor wifi poor wifi
- siimmaaten (6/5): Very helpful staff - Staff very helpful and nice. They helped us a lot to arrange future travels. Location was good for us as we like to walk around the old city and there wasn't too much traffic. But the price/quality for the rooms was not in balance. I have to say, we were disappointed when entered the room. First we were at the first floor that was connected to the lobby hall, you could basically hear everything that was going on there and it kept us awake for one night. Then we changed to the second floor room and there was no sound problem at nights at all. Overall OK experience.
- Wanderelch (10/5): Really nice, clean, helpful & friendly staff - Really nice Hotel.
I guess they just changed their name to "Mali's Room", since "Western House Hotel" is always just in brackets.
Rooms are clean, staff is friendly and helpful and they have free wifi, free coffee and free tea in the lobby ;-)
(Sure, free wifi is also available in the rooms)
- Stephen (8/5): Nice place on a budget - Very good location, hotel was basic but good value for money, staff very friendly, free tea and coffee all day, pool table in lobby passed an hour a day, rooms very basic but hot shower,tv, and a small balcony which looked out on a temple which was nice ,rooms were clean ,definitely a good hotel if you're on a budget
- sharnk360 (10/5): Great value for money - Stayed here for four nights, brilliant value for money. Staff are very friendly and helpful and we were provided with two bottles of water every day. The location is walking distance from a lot of attractions including temples and the night bazaar. I've seen some negative comments regarding their air con however ours worked completely fine and we only left it in for a few minutes every evening.
- christopherbX6657EE (10/5): Super - We stayed here three nights during Loi Krathong and then for two nights again the week after returning from Pai. They've been super helpful and sweet, free unlimited bottled water, coffee, and conveniently located. Each room has a balcony and AC, and I found it clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay again.
- weiw193 (8/5): Comfy hotel - Clean room and bed sheet. Room is quite spacious but toilet's shower head water is low. Quiet neighbourhood thus not suitable for those wanna party all night. Few minute walk to north gate entrance and opposite the roads are many foodstalls for dinner option.
- chin man (8/5): an excellent last minute booking - There were ants in the shower room.
- 80MaryM80 (2/5): Awful Experience - I had booked Western House Hotel (now known as Mali's Room) for a part of my trip to Thailand - November 13th - November 17th. It was a fair-sized room with air-conditioning (that worked sometimes), these were the only poisitive things I could say about this hotel. There is no elevator! Warning for those who have a difficult time or cannot use stairs. It is tucked away in a neighbourhood which is difficult to get to via cab/tuktuk and is a far walk from a lot of spots. On my second day, I had come into the room to take a shower, brush my teeth, and use the toilet. The shower water was running black, in a panic I tried running the sink water which was running black/brown as well. the toilet didnt flush anymore. Naturally, I was very concerned and went downstairs to the reception desk. The two people working at the desk came upstairs with me to check this out. They had told me to just let the water run for 5-10 minutes until it ran clear and never said anything about fixing the toilet. That night, I had fallen asleep and woke up to a line of ants crawling in my bed and onto my pillow. They were really not accomodating about this which had led me to find a new place. After only my second night there, I left in the morning and booked a different hotel. No refund policy which is unfortunate but I was fine losing that money because my health and comfortably were at stake.
- joyluvk (6/5): nice location - walk distance to a lot of pagodas & temples, night bazaar, wet market, restaurants
staff & owner are very helpful.... helped us get lower priced tours... helped us with directions, stored our luggages. we used overnight bus from bangkok, arrived 7 am and they allowed us to check in early without extra pay..... coffee, tea, water and microwave in the reception area.... view from our balcony was the temple & pagoda! great!
- LCKB321 (10/5): Just what you need... - Currently staying in Western House and generally very pleased with the accommodation. Of course this is factoring in that the hotel is 2*..
The rooms are tidy and clean, bathroom clean, air conditioning, staff at reception are very polite and always keen and willing to help with requests/services.
Positives
- well worth your buck for what you get in return
- rooms are tidy
- couple bottles of water free every day
- laundry service at 90baht per kilo washed and folded and returned same day
- balcony
- air conditioning
- multiple wifi's to connect from (free)
Negatives
- sometimes hot water not very hot
- air conditioning not that powerful so has to be left on when not in room to keep room at a good temperature
- hallway noise not consumed by door
Overall, very happy with our stay and would recommend if you're after a no thrills, cheap, decent location hotel where you can crash in the comfort of a clean room.
- Maps665154 (6/5): Cheap and cozy - At first, this hotel can be looked weird or eerie. Because it is located on a narrow road which local people live at. This hotel isn't the best. However, inside, it's comfortable and you can take a rest well. It's worth for what you paid.
Have fun!
- paulsJ5543AL (8/5): Quite cozy and price worthy - First stay and the staff was somewhat friendly. Boo for no elevator which made my tired life even more miserable.
The room was quite quiet and it is behind nice temple. You can enjoy your morning here as well as walking around for morning temple ceremony.
#noamenities
- Jai-Rak (8/5): Cosy hidden gem 5 mins from Chang Puak Gate - Stayed in a Standard Double Room for 2 nights.
a) Hotel is safely nestled behind a temple, away from the bustling main road. Short distance away from Chang Phuak Bus Terminal, Songthaew pick up points to Tiger Kingdom, Doi Suthep etc, decent local restaurants and convenience stores.
Long distance away (on foot) from attractions such as Night Bazaar, Warorot Market, but can be reached easily by Songthaew or own transport.
*Songthaew ride to Chiang Mai Railway Station costs around 100 THB (US 2.90).
b) Counter staff speak basic English and provide useful information about the city. Cleaning staff work hard keeping hotel clean. Hot drinks provided 24 hours at pantry area (Ground level). Laundry service provided at small cost. Parking provided for own transport.
No elevator installed, might be a challenge for guests with injuries. Apply mosquito repellent when lounging at pantry area.
c) Room was comfy, clean, spacious and satisfied my basic needs. Television had wide selection of channels to choose from. Fresh water provided every day. Small balcony to catch fresh air. Sufficient power points.
Door has no peek hole, only chain and bolt.
d) Near attractions such as Wat Chedi Luang and Three Kings' Monument.
- Philip (8/5): Extended my stay! - Extended my stay here due to feeling that it ticked all the boxes for me as a solo traveller.
For the price I couldn't have asked for more.
Well worth booking as your initial first stay in chiang mai and then evaluate from there.
Staff were friendly and plenty of motorbike hire places in walking distance.
Hotel akurat dla każdego, schludnie, blisko wszędzie i czysto!
- Aaron (8/5): Brilliant - Excellent. Rodney is great
- Verified traveler (6/5):
Totally good. It's need a safe cashbox.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great, comfortable stay - Great, easy and comfortable stay for an affordable price! Would stay again!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - a clean space with fair price
- Verified traveler (6/5): “Quiet Location, Budget Stay” - Located at the back of an old Wat and very quiet. The rooms are clean, comfortable and simple. Complimentary coffee is available at the lobby with table seatings. We had a comfortable stay and close to a lot of eateries and shopping in the old city. Very good Wifi connectivity.
- Indiana (6/5): OK but nothing special. - The hotel seems in the center if you look on a map but the old square is not the real center of town so this comes as a surprise.
Nevertheless, with collective taxi, tuk-tuk or scooter it is possible to move.
The hotel is basic and does not offer many facilities.
No breakfast but tea and coffee are available in the common room.
No laundry but you can wash your clothes, walking distance for 50 baths in a self-service laundry.
The bathroom is basic but there is hot water.
The staff of the hotel is nice and welcoming.
- bouavanh (4/5): great location not the cleanest place - not the cleanest place but the people are nice and its in a great location
- Andrew (8/5): Budget hotel inside the old city walls - The Western was well located and easy walk everywhere in CM.
Room was clean and comfortable. Did have some ants in our room, but they were just the small ones that don't really bother you. Air Conditioning worked well and so did the wifi.
Generous daily water bottles.
Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Would recommend and stay again.
- Michal (8/5): Value for money - If you are looking just for place to sleep which make base for your city exploration. This is your place.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Okay - The room itself was okay. That's all it really had. A room. There was no restaurant. No laundry facilities. The staff were okay. We asked about trekking, they just said which do you want to do? We had no idea about any of the trekking tours. Although they weren't unpleasant. They were not very helpful.
Wifi instable
- Mark (8/5): Nice and cheap - Very cheap for being in old town, but could use some minor fix ups. However, well worth the money if you are on a budget. I will stay here again if I can manage to come back to Chiang Mai.
- Verified traveler (6/5): So so. - Hotel was fine. In a good part of town, but the Soi it was located on was nothing to write home about. Room was nothing special. Hotel staff was very nice. Wifi was fine. Coffee was the typical instant Nescafe. I just feel like the rooms were expensive for what they were. AC was great, but for 590 Bhat, I will try a different hotel next time.
- Tess (8/5): Room was not terrible but the rest was good - Basically what you'd expect of a budget hotel. The location was fantastic, in the old city near the firt gate. Me and my mum felt very safe walking around at night, exploring the many alleyways that make up the city. And the staff were lovely. Really friendly.
- Verified traveler (4/5): *Insert construction noises here* - The bed was comfortable but the constant construction above our room made for a less than ideal getaway. The wifi is good though.
