Guest Reviews
- Pereira Araujo (8/5): -
- Ting (9/5): Very nice - The onsen is very nice.

- MartiYtraw92 (9/5): Good traditional night - I like the tradizional accomodation, with yukata and onsen included! Also free tea and coffee. I know it would be a bit cold, I moved the futon away from the window so it was ok.
It is a bit far from the train station, but it is available a taxi service (if the timing is ok for you).
- ainhoa (10/5): Buena -

- SZU HAN (8/5): -
- Claudio (8/5): Bellissimo soggiorno :) - Tutto come da descrizione :)
Onsen compreso piccolo ma pratico e bello rilassante !
Gestione famigliare e tutto perfetto :)

- Christian (10/5): - Super traditionelles guesthouse.
- Valerio (8/5): Very good -
- Konstanze (10/5): Exceptional - The experience was magnificent, the staff so kind. They even pay for your taxi from the station and are so considerate.
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maria (9/5): Super recommend! - Everything! Beautiful place, very clean, very nice staff! They have a free charge service that brings clients from and to the train/bus station!
- Matthew (8/5): Quirky but cool place, with nice touches such as robes and free drinks from coffee machine. - This place is a more traditional, older hotel. It was an adventure staying there. It’s situated in an older neighborhood and within walking distance of shops and restaurants. It felt cozy and safe. Shared toilet, sink and bathing facilities made my friend a little uncomfortable. We hoped to have a meal included but wasn’t able to opt for that while booking and it was sold out when we got there. Heater controls in the room was only in Japanese and translated information wasn’t sufficient to operate it consistently.
- Solly (8/5): Very good -
- Meng (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kyle (9/5): Excellent Ryokan! - The Onsen was great, it had the traditional Ryokan mats and experience. The location is a bit far from the station and food in town, but they do offer a free shuttle, so that's on us for wanting to walk.
- Ries (8/5): Central Location and great value for money - It's just as described - a small private room with shared toilets (close by in my case) and downstairs is the small onsen with showers.
There was never anyone else there at the same time as me. The onsen (men and women separate) itself is small but relaxing - one small outdoor wooden tub an an indoor pool that is bigger.
The TV in the room was modern and the aircon worked well. The mattress was softer than I expected though.
I think there's normal seating in the communal area, I've never used it though.
Owners and staff are very kind and polite.
Very good location and great value for money. So to shower or use the onsen you have to go there during the opening hours in the morning or evening (probably long enough for most people). The hotel itself also has a curfew, I believe at 23:00.
Probably not ideal for night-owls unless you can adapt a bit.
In the room, there is no chair of course because this is Japanese style where you're supposed to sit on the floor.
- Tiffany (9/5): Superb -
- Kellie (8/5): Very good -
- Karen (8/5): Very good -
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional - I loved the friendly atmosphere, the onsen and the traditional-style room. Im probably not used to it but the pillow was really too hard.
- Sam (9/5): comfortable - Bus service to the train station, we had a lot of luggage.
- Marco (10/5): Exceptional - My stay at Minshuku Iwatakan was a delightful immersion into the beauty of Takayama. The traditional Japanese ambiance of the inn was captivating, providing an authentic experience. The hospitality of the staff was exceptional; they were warm, attentive, and went above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. The rooms were cozy, impeccably clean, and offered a serene view of the surrounding nature. The home-cooked meals served were a true highlight, showcasing local flavors and culinary expertise. The inn's proximity to the town's attractions made it a convenient and serene base for exploring Takayama. I left feeling refreshed and grateful for the authentic and enriching experience. A definite recommendation for anyone seeking a taste of traditional Japanese hospitality!
- Mathew (10/5): Going to be and walking up here on a rainy fall day felt like a dream. Cozy. - Beautiful experience Bathrooms can be a little
Chaotic in the morning.
- Deirdre (10/5): Exceptional - Spotless and great staff
- Nicholas (1/5): Would not recommend this place to others. - Nothing I actually sent an email to booking.com but did not receive a reply. We paid. - checked in and then left and secured a new hotel with booking.com. This hotel was not what booking.com suggested it was. Based on all of our hotel bookings made through your service we would love a refund. You should change the write up as it was very very misleading. I paid $250 and stayed 5 minutes. We are easy going people and not hotel snobs. But we just couldn’t stay here for 2 days.
- Matteopmaier (9/5): Superb - The structure is very nice, we loved it! Cozy atmosphere, typical of a Japanese Ryokan. There are two private onsen that can be used by the guests. There were Yukata available for guests but nobody told me!
- Reece (9/5): Superb -
- Mark (8/5): Nice location and good service - Good location, free pick up service, free bikes Shared toilet and washstands down the hall. Only shower is in communal onsen. The onsen is very nice, but off course it goed with a lack of privacy
- Shoaib (10/5): Exceptional - The onsen was great Nothing
- Noji (8/5): - very nice!
- Giulia (8/5): Authentic and beautiful guesthouse with private onsens! - I loved the private onsen experience and the fact that the building was truly authentic and beautiful. The rooms are super welcoming. There is only one shower for women that for the late afternoon/evening becomes everybody’s onsen. This means that you may need to wait a long time for taking a shower which i did not like.
- Jorge (10/5): Exceptional -
- Armando (10/5): - Every thing is perfect, the only thing I have to say is that at the app I reserved a room with private bathroom and there was not a private bathroom there.
- Cesith (7/5): Good - Awesome but... Be home at 11pm
So you can't really go out for to long :/
- Mariana (10/5): loved it! - nice onsen which you could use privately in the evening, yukatas to wear around the property and nice owners. all very clean too was a little bit out of the way but still really only 20 min from the station
- Rungnapa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rose (10/5): Friendly staff, authentic JapaneseInn experience - Wonderful place to stay. Loved the hot bath and traditional Japanese Inn experience!
A conseiller !
thanks a lot to Minshuku Iwatakan !
- Jan (10/5): - Super oplevelse.
- Michael (10/5): Nice little hotel - Basic but very complete, kind people very service minded, food japanese breakfast, nice little onsen, washing machine and free bikes
- Khee Fatt (10/5): - Hotel staff is very polite and friendly
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Friendly owners, clean and the natural spring bath was the best! After a long day of walking around it was the perfect thing. Room was spacious and comfortable, staff even made sure to turn the heat on before I got back.
- Daniel (8/5): Nice, quiet Ryokan - My girlfriend and I stayed in Takayama for 3 nights, and we really enjoyed this place.
The owners are a quiet but friendly Japanese couple who don't speak a ton of English, but it wasn't really a problem at all.
The location is nice, just on the fringes of the old city, about a 5 min bike ride or 15 min walk to the main center of town. They have tons of bikes for guests to use, and it's a really beautiful little town to bike through.
The onsen was a nice bonus, and it was always kept very clean. Just note that they are gender separated, and like a traditional Japanese onsen you bathe naked. There's a nice guide on the wall of the change room that shows you everything you need to know about proper onsen etiquette.
Overall we'd recommend this place to anyone looking for the Ryokan experience in Takayama.
- Verified traveler (8/5): C/P is high - Staffs are very kind. Living room is clear and hot spring is good. Although the distance to bus/train station is little far, B & B can pick you up at station.
- Verified traveler (6/5): It was a serviceable hotel - We were only passing through Takayama and needed an inexpensive place to stay (which is all relative when traveling in Japan during cherry blossom season in April. The prices everywhere seem to go up exponentially at that time. Even though we booked at least 2 months prior to our trip, it was very difficult to find a nice place at a mid-range price. The Minshuku Iwatatkan was clean and had an okay public bath. It was a bit far from the train station or any points of ear interest, but they did have a shuttle to/from the station.
- Verified traveler (2/5): -
- Lai King (6/5):
- Hiroko (8/5): Friendly people and clean, nice minshuku - The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Clean and comfortable.
- David (6/5): - Good little ryokan in a residential area..The only problem was that if you had not ordered dinner on booking, they would not provide dinner, even with 24 hours notice....Some might find it too far from the centre town, but we liked being in this nice residential street, not far from the reiver.
- Isabelle (10/5): Try a traditional way of living - Really beautiful place near all you want to see in Takayama. The traditional bath are a bit intimidating but really feel good. The host don't speak english but makes great effort to understand you and be understand.
- Yonanthan (10/5): Great riokan, amazing value for money - Short stay, lovely riokan
- Gitay (8/5): - Liked it
- Marilyn (8/5): Great hot tub - Good service from the train station. Close to the morning market and easy walking around town to see everything
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Aren (10/5): A lovely traditional experience in a mountain town - Minshuku Iwatakan was one of the nicest places I stayed on my three week trip to Japan with my fiancée. We stayed May 16 and 17. Although a little far from the train station, the place was an exceptionally clean and quiet guesthouse. The traditional room was large and expansive, with comfortable tatami mats lining the floor. There was more than enough room for my fiancée and I. The workers were friendly, although their English was extremely limited. That being the case, however, there was no trouble arranging things with them. The room had an air-conditioning unit, which was nice during the hot days. Although the . The place is a little distant from the centre of the old town, but the centre of Takayama is extremely small and getting to the main part of town was a very pleasant stroll along a gorgeous riverbank. As well, the guesthouse has free bicycles for guests to use, which is excellent. It allowed us to bike out to the Hida Folk Village a few kilometres south, and one of our most enjoyable experiences was biking along the riverbank at 10pm at night after all the shops and restaurants had closed and there were few lights but the stars overhead. Such an experience was made possible by the convenience of the guesthouse. Finally, although there is a shared bathroom at Minshuku Iwatakan, it was never an issue. The washrooms were always clean and the communal showers were comfortable. The hot spring is a bonus.
- KD (10/5): Great memories of Takayama thanks to a great hotel - I really loved this hotel.
At the train station, when asking for directions to this hotel, the woman at the information counter rang the hotel for us and the lovely owner came to pick us up in a van. Likewise, when we were running late for out train out of Takayama, the hotel had not problem in rushing us to the station.
Minshuku Iwatakan was a traditional ryokan, so it meant shoes off in the foyer, and slippers throughout the rest of the hotel. The tatami mat rooms were incredibly spacious, and had a lovely relaxing ambience.
It was quite cold in Takayama at the time (early April) but thankfully the heater/air conditioner worked well.
The free bicycle hire was an utterly fantastic way of exploring the town and the free umbrellas came in really handy too.
Finally, the onsen, with it's indoor and outdoor pool was a really nice way to unwind from a long day of sightseeing.
- Dylan (8/5): Close to park, morning market and shrines - My wife and I stayed in Takayama in December and it snowed very heavily. We got snowed in for three days and were the only guests at Iwatakan. The staff were very accommodating but and it's a great little place but being at the back of the town against the hill in the older historic section you could tell that they weren't expecting guests and they seemed almost surprised to see us arrive.
.
