- David (10/5): Cute 1 night stay - We were passing through on a motorcycle trip. The hotel was just as described. Nothing too fancy and no interaction with anyone while checking in or out. There was a cool looking bar area but it was closed for a private party. Not many dinner choices around the area however we took a beautiful stroll along the water to the marina where we had a drink and dinner.

- YentaLeah (8/5): Lovely Small Town Character AirBNB - The facility was lovely!! Definitely a place to return with very unique character, though limited amenities. The bar along that we expected open was not and the offer of refreshments was actually empty. The coffee service was very minimal to the description provided. The only real concern is that they have switched to an AirBNB operation vs a full service inn. I missed not having front desk service. We received a clear confirmation and instructions but the wrong room was listed so we were unable to enter the room listed. We called the number and they responded shortly after. However it was a stressful few minutes.
- Joel (2/5): Horrible hotel in a tiny town - Room was freezing even at 75 degrees, until the sun comes up, shining brightly into the curtainless windows. There are blinds, but they block none of the light. It’s not like I could sleep anyway with the sounds of the nearby train going all night. The couch in the room was disgustingly stained, and the TV only had one volume - LOUD. Never again.

- andrearH4758DT (10/5): Charming and Elegant - The Kingsley Inn is charming and elegant. An employee was available even late at night to reach by text. Many rooms have a view of the river and the trains that pass by. The trains did not bother us while we were sleeping, but the hotel does provide a noisemaker and ear plugs.
- Gayle (6/5): - Booked a river view room (204), rec'd confirmation for room 204, but as we were driving to the hotel, rec'd a text that we would be in room 201, which had a broken blind and a view of the parking lot. The Inn is like a ghost town, no bar, the restaurant adjacent is no longer open, no breakfast continental or otherwise as advertised. No staff or management on the premises. Was told they are more Airbnb in format. The positives of our stay is that Ft. Madison itself is charming, and there is an excellent restaurant down the street, Turnwater Bar & Grill. We got a decent nights sleep, but I cannot recommend the Kingsley Inn, nor will I stay there again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Historical charm - The hotel is a beautiful historical building located in the heart of Fort Madison. We stayed in room 303 which has a view of the Mississippi River as well as the train tracks (for train lovers). Despite being so close to the train tracks, the hotel is rather quiet, and we were provided ear plugs and a noise machine which helped with the noise that did come through. The hotel was clean and overall well maintained, although our tub drain did back up during showers and our AC struggled to cool the room during the day. The bed was rather uncomfortable and the sheets were too small for the depth of the bed and would slip off of the corners during the night. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay.
- Rene (8/5): - I don't leave negative reviews. I leave fair criticism. The faucet leak in the bedroom was at a constant flow. I couldn't shut the valve off to stop that. I felt a couple of cobwebs near the bed and killed another on the desktop near the window. The bar meant for hanging shirts (I think that's what it was) had no hangers. The bed was comfortable and the room temperature was excellent. The rest of the whole hotel looked very clean and fancy. I walked the hallways at different times of the day/night and did not see another single person or staff member. The views were stunning. The price point is very good so none of the issues I ran into would keep me from staying again overnight.

A phone number was provided if you needed help. Everything was just steps away. Perfect location. Enjoyed playing the piano. Please dust it...and the vase on the piano. Enjoyed our stay.
- LeAnn (6/5): Missed coffee in the morning! - The code check-in went smoothly. We were told that the hotel was booking up fast, and my sister said she was told she had the last room. We had three rooms and felt there was no one there. We were disappointed that the morning room did not serve breakfast and it was Easter Sunday. We were hoping to sit and at least have a cup of coffee with our family members that had stayed with us.
- jessica (6/5): - On arrival we were greeted and shown our room. Everything was excellent. We were then informed that no staff would be on site after 10pm. They also no longer offer breakfast service but a small cafe was available around the corner. For our two day stay were did not encounter any staff or other guests. Until late on our second night when the hotel manager entered our room unexpectedly. Luckily we were not doing anything that would be embarrassing. After meeting the manager again in the hallway she apologized while laughing about the incident. We did not find it amusing. We decided to chain our door when we returned for the night after dinner. There overall look of the hotel is nice and cozy. The flooring looks new and bathrooms are remodeled. The light fixtures in the bathroom were fairly dusty. The antique furniture was appealing but the armoire was annoying. It would not lock and the doors squeaked every time you walked around the room. The view of the river and train tracks was nice. However, you cannot open the windows since they are covered by glass. If not for intrusion our stay would have been fairly quiet and we would’ve thought the place was all ours.
- johnwV3884UL (10/5): Nice weekend stay!! - I came here on the Amtrak Southwest Chief and spent the weekend in Fort Madison mainly to watch the trains but to also enjoy the Mississippi River. It is an older building but nicely restored and the rooms are modern and classic at the same time. Since the hotel is geared towards railfans (there's a railcam overlooking the BNSF lines) the internet was more than adequate plus the free breakfast a big plus. A few restaurants are within walking distance along with the riverfront and the Santa Fe depot

- Howard (10/5): Loved watching the Trains - We were on a trip back from Branson MO and wanted to stop at this hotel because of the busy train line in front of the hotel. I can spen hours watching trains and this room did not dissapoint. We stayed in room 203 because being 6'7" tall I need a king size bed and I was glad to see they offered one on the river view side of the hotel. Such a wonderful place for the train enthusiasts. There is a kitchen right down the hall if you like to bring your own meals. The staff was great and I am sure lonely since being an off season, there were only a couple of rooms occupied. Trains went by 24/7 but don't worry the room has a sound machine and they will provide ear plugs if needed. It's a must stop for anyone that loves to watch trains.
- Steve (8/5): Nice stay - We enjoyed our weekend at the Kingsley. Our bed was comfortable and the room was nice. Everything was clean. Staff was very nice. Breakfast was disappointing. Continental. Yogurt, muffins, cereal - frozen sandwiches for microwave. There are so many new options for hot self service breakfast. Waffles or pancakes would have been great. No fresh fruit:( Just expected a bit more from such a nice place. It was perfectly fine though, no special effort. The train across the street would blow the horn 4 times for the crossing 3-4 times a night we actually didn’t even wake up after the first night but earplugs were provided. Check in/out was easy, very private, and quiet.

A fair breakfast...frozen things to heat & eat, cereals, juices, muffins, bagels, etc. Our room did not have a fridge or microwave so we had to keep things cold in a cooler with ice. You will hear the trains at night.
- vickig842 (10/5): A super weekend at a historic inn. - This handsome old brick building, a former laundry, has views of the mighty Mississippi. It's been transformed into a gem of a place to stay whenever I visit Fort Madison. Registration and communication with the front desk is always reliable, and our accommodations (a two bed two-bath apartment) were perfect in every way. Since Fort Madison is my hometown, the nearby and frequent trains were like a lullaby to me. Other guests may want to take advantage of the earplugs and sound machines that are offered to all guests. Breakfast in the beautiful morning room features a variety of items, hot and cold. A wonderful place to stay, highly recommended

Unfortunately, the hotel was closed when we arrived, luckily another guest arrived (the only person staying there that day) and informed us that we need to call the hotel's number. A person came and opened the door and checked us in, and gave us codes to be able to enter the hotel and our room. The bar and restaurant were not open that day and the next. Consequently we left the next day.
- Sylvia (10/5): - The property is located across the street from the Mississippi River, providing scenic views, a walkable environment and interesting history. The guest kitchen needs a serious cleaning, reorganizing and upkeep. It is obvious that it does not get the regular attention the guest rooms do.
- EAZELIFF (10/5): Beautiful Victorian hotel - Stayed here one night on my road trip, having passed through Fort Madison a number of times on the Amtrak train. The room and facilities are lovely and spotless. Two drinks on the house at the bar. Spacious room with good air conditioning. I thought the breakfast buffet was so so. Glad to have stayed her and would return.

- 169richc (10/5): Great stay - Stayed at Kingsley Inn for 2 days. Our visit was mainly for our kids to watch the trains in the area. There is some great train spotting in front of the hotel. We were very happy with our stay there. The staff was great at the hotel. Very friendly and welcoming. Everything was very clean. We stayed in room 206. Awesome view of the river. The room itself was clean and spacious. I would recommend staying here.

- Randal (10/5): - This is a great mix of a Bed and Breakfast and Boutique hotel. For a 140 year old building it was nicely laid out and decor while Victorian was clean and fresh. The general manager and staff were fantastic.

We were told that we could explore any room with an open door. Each room had a book with notes from previous guests. It was interesting to read the different rooms books. We had a great time.

We stayed two nights and every morning we had breakfast which I thought personally was the best breakfast compared to hotels I’ve been to. The staff always greeted us in the morning with a good morning and when we were leaving they told us to have a safe trip home. I definitely will be going back.

- Suzanne (10/5): Very comfortable and charming stay - We had a great two night stay at the Kingsley Inn. The staff was helpful, the room was a good size and very comfortable. The breakfast was serve yourself continental style, but it had enough option. We had four people staying in our room and it was very helpful to have restrooms down the hall if ours was being used. I also really appreciated that I could store some food in the kitchen refrigerator as we were mid-road trip. The building is so quaint and all of the period touches are lovely. I would stay here again if ever in the area. If you are a light sleeper, this may not be the hotel for you. Our room faced the back parking lot and a nearby building had a really loud industrial fan that ran constantly. It just made for white noise for me and was not a problem. Also, the train runs often and it was also loud - it never interrupted my sleep and I found it added to the charm, but ear plugs are provided just in case. We walked a couple of blocks along the River and ate dinner at a Chinese restaurant we discovered on the information board. It was good and a nice part of our stay.

Bed was outstanding! I slept til almost 7 every morning and normally get up at 430. Great view of the river and the trains. Neither of us found the trains too loud or kept us awake all night. Staff was very friendly. Great location for things to do in Ft Madison and the surrounding area.

If an employee of mine used that kind of language within ear shot of my customers, that employee would have been fired on the spot. You can do better than this!
- witaxman (10/5): We Love This Place! - We recently returned from our seventh (7) stay at the Kingsley Inn in 3 years. Love the place! It's clean, the staff is ultra-friendly and the location is perfect; excellent views facing the Mississippi and the railroad. Great breakfast, easy walking to the riverfront and the train depot. We're train watchers so the location is an extra plus. The hotel is also pet friendly. If you are in Fort Madison this is the place to stay!

Also no communication when the breakfast would be available. We are early risers and opening at 7 was too late for us we went to a eating place west of town. The one closest to us did not look like an inviting place to eat, We walked along the River which is nice.

- Alison (10/5): - This quirky Victorian style property is a great place to stay. As a solo traveller I felt safe & staff were attentive. The continental breakfast was good with a wide selection of self service items on offer. You do need to be aware that the trains ‘toot’ as they go past and some are quite long but the hotel does supply ear plugs & using them I wasn’t bothered by the noise. All in all more of an old fashioned, individual stay rather than a corporate experience. I loved it!

- MinnesotaSteve (4/5): Wedding noise spoils everything - It's a lovely hotel: beautiful 19th century building facing the River; nicely rehabbed rooms; an interesting concept--somewhere between a hostel and a hotel, with various amenities but no conventional hotel staff. Reasonable prices. All good. Except this: I happened to book on the night a wedding was being held on the main floor, and even though I was on the second floor, far from the venue, the music was deafening and never ending--from 4 pm when I arrived to 10 pm. Unbelievably unpleasant after a long day of driving, and so disappointing that my experience was pretty much ruined. The moral is: do not book a room on the weekend, ever; and just to be safe, always check to see if a wedding is booked.

The rooms are beautiful, elegant, quaint, cozy, unique some with absolutely amazing views. The staff goes out of their way to help you and to accommodate you and to introduce you to sites in the city, the bartender was amazing. She introduced me to new drinks that were so good, the friendliness remind you of an error long ago that has been forgotten. Anybody that passes up an opportunity to stay at this hotel is a fool. I can’t wait to go back.

Staff doesn’t clean/refresh room the entire stay, which some people might prefer. Temperature was hard to regulate. But hearing the trains was fun. Simple Table is a nice 5 table restaurant nearby.

- robinn972 (10/5): Lovely accommodations! - Our first trip to the area, and I searched for a nice hotel, but there weren't a lot of choices without having to travel to a nearby town. I then came across the Kingsley Inn, and fell in love immediately with the pictures. The price was incredibly reasonable also. Once we arrived, we were madly in love with this place. The history of the building the view of the river and the train station, the well-decorated room was so pretty, and the staff that we interacted with over our two night stay, were extremely attentive, friendly and helpful. Also appreciated the grab/go breakfast. We took the time to check out all the other rooms on the second and third floors, and have an idea of the ones we would like to stay in if we make it back to Fort Madison. Believe me, you don't want to miss this gem!!

- Michael (10/5): - What is there to no like there but just to enjoy everything about this place and location....we didn't plan this place but found it through googling and tripadvior. So glad we did and had a wonderful time unexpectedly. Great views of Mississippi River that is walking distance for early morning stroll to see eagles and other birds plus nearby coffee cafe which was another bonus treat for visitors. The Irish pub that was recommened by friendly front desk lady was great local pub. We will definitely go back. IT's kind of place where you will always talk about because it left you that feeling of wanting to go back.
