Guest Reviews
- Paul (10/5): What a great location - Amazing location, very spacious and well equipped apartment.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Better than home! - We absolutely loved State and Grand by Bridgestreet. The location is unbeatable, and the parking access made everything we did easy. The studio where we stayed is really a one-bedroom - not sure why it's called a studio. There was every comfort of home including a large walk-in closet, laundry in another handy closet, a fine kitchen, and plenty of comfortable furniture. The view was great- fun for everyone to visit and hang out with us, which was the real reason we were there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Once in a lifetime experience!! - One bedroom spacious condo in nice downtown of Chicago!! Whst else more can I ask!! Once in a lifetime experience!!!
- Jim (10/5): Great location, amazing light and views! - Lots of amenities - kitchen, washer/dryer, closet, large bathroom, pool w/ outdoor terrace... The staff was friendly and very helpful.
- Cristian (10/5): Excellent apt, nice view very well located - Excellent. Few things to repair like the master bathroom flooded once, but overall a great place
- Beverly (8/5): - This was a wonderful experience. I was searching for hotels on Expedia and this apartment/hotel came up. The price was great and comparable to a regular hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Location - Apartment is in a great Location with a great layout and view overlooking the city. For the traveler who desires a lot of service and attention, this may not be the best choice. For our family we prefer to have the privacy and do not want daily maid service. It was an excellent alternative to the conventional hotel.
- Donna (10/5): Perfect location - Great view of the city. Big 2 bdrm apt. Only thing I'd change: king size bed in master instead of queen and larger tvs. We've stayed at this location twice. Very lovely.
- jim (10/5): - Only improvement would be if I was able to control the heat--I couldnt get the apartment warmer,
and the blower kept running--i was finally able to turn off the blower--other than that--great trip.
- John (10/5): Convenient River North Apart-hotel - Overall, a great room in a great location. Extremely comfortable and stylishly well-appointed. Wish there would have been a larger bed, and we had some problem with the televisions, but these are minor issues. I would definitely recommend and stay again!
- Hal (10/5): Great location - Very pleasant stay in a suite with all the amenities. Many restaurants and great shopping within easy walking distance. Transportation excellent with close proximity to metro station.
- Terence (2/5): Horrific Experience - The best thing about the place was the location. Unit 2301 was dirty, smelly (the kind of smell you cannot camouflage- stuck in the carpet & walls), the bed was old and lumpy, dishwasher rusty, couch & tables were stained --- horrible! The audacity of the Property Management to think that we wouldn't notice it! One look at the place and we were out of there -- we ended up paying more but 1000% more satisfied. Hotels.com, Take this off your listing or you can guarantee very unhappy customers.
- Olga (8/5): Perfect location - Absolutely loved the location and the views from the room. I've lived in Chicago before and now considering investing into property in River North after this stay. It's a perfect location for shopping, dining, tourist attractions and overall amazing stay. The room had a great layout, kitchen, dinning area, living room space, private bathroom, the bed a bit small but overall it was a great experience.
- kyle (10/5): Excellent Place to Stay in Downtown Chicago - The State and Grand by Bridgestreet exceeded my expectations. Our apartment was spacious and well designed. The sitting room and bedrooms have floor to ceiling windows, and there is a small balcony off the living room. As a result, our unit had very good views. This residence hotel is well located for visiting Chicago's downtown. The Magnificent Mile is only a couple of blocks east, and there are many good restaurants within easy walking distance (try Bijan bistro, three blocks north). We found the staff to be very accommodating. All-in-all an excellent value in downtown Chicago.
- Theresa (8/5): Great location and accommodations! - We traveled with another couple and shared a two bedroom, two bath unit. There was plenty of room and the kitchen was well appointed. We enjoyed use of the indoor pool and rooftop terrace, but wish they were open later. Parking was $45/night, which isn't terrible by Chicago standards, but would have been nice if it were less, especially because almost everything you want to do or see is within walking distance or easily accessible by taxi or public transit. Bridgestreet is in a great area of the city, central to just about everything.
- Rico (8/5): Modern Apartment close to lots of entertainment! - Great Apartment. Bill at the front desk was very helpful and we had no difficulty checking in. The apartment is only serviced every second week, but there is a washing machine and tumble dryer in case you needed to wash some clothes or towels. The apartments share the 17th floor swimming pool with the neighbouring hotel - great spot with a small outdoor patio section. We would definately book this apartment again!
- Jimmy (10/5): Great location - Subway entry right outside apartment. Really convenient.
- Holly (10/5): wonderful alternative to a hotel - If you are planning a longer stay, or wish to experience "living" in Chicago, this is the place. Our room was modern and fully equipped. (although the frying pan was tiny) We were located within walking distance of the museum campus and the Navy Pier, the Bean and many other interesting things to see and do. Overall, an excellent experience!
- Stephen (10/5): - Thank you so much for honoring my reservation when I had to postpone for a death in the family. Meant the world to me that you empathized.
- Ellen (10/5): Convenient location - The hotel was nicer and better than expected. Also, the location was perfect for us. We got to where we planned to go to by walking without any problems. The staff at the front desk was courteous and helpful as well. If we go back to Chicago in the future, it is highly likely that we will return to State and Grand again.
- Verified traveler (2/5): really bad - Arrival was complicated with ridiculous paperwork and unreasonable terms forced upon you. Management rude and very unhelpful. Not a hotel. Lacking basic facilities. Staff rude. Misleading. Bit of a mess all around
- Santo (10/5): First class facility. - Would recommend to anyone visiting the Chacigo area. Thirtieth floor apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and full kitchen and a view to kill for, ceiling to floor windows allowed for a panoramic view of the city. The pool on the seventeenth floor was awesome. Hopefully they have a space for me on my next visit. Top Notch!!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Real nice - Nice condo. Nice view
- Connie (10/5): Nice short stay - The stay here was great! Apartment style hotels are nice expecially for longer stays. I had a studio and it was just me. The view is nice too. At night you will hear a lot of cars and it will be bright but I used the city lights as my night light. I gave the cleanliness 3 bars only because I think the living room rug and carpet in the place needed a deep cleaning, it looked dirty.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Perfect location! - Walking distance to everything fun in River North - Michigan Ave, Hancock Tower, Eataly, great restaurants and bars and only a 20 minute walk to Millenium Park and the Bean. We rented a two bedroom apartment over Presidents Day weekend and it was by far the best choice for the price in terms of location and space for two couples to share. The beds were comfortable and bathrooms spacious (although the shower in the second bath is a little odd). It was great to have a full kitchen with modern appliances and while the living area was small, it worked and was comfortable. The views from the floor to ceiling windows and the balcony overlooked the city and Lake Michigan and was gorgeous - especially at night & at sunrise. The furniture is a little banged up and we could never get the TV in the master bedroom to turn on. The Front Desk attendant did come up and try to fix it for us and even called their maintenance crew to come in and help. And although it was incredibly hard to find the front door to the complex the first time, check in was an absolute breeze.
- juanita (8/5): Great rooms and great location - The rooms were great for the price. Was like a home away from home. Was displaced because of construction in my home and felt very comfortable there. but the customer service need some help. Don't have the front desk service you would expect at a hotel. We didn't even have a phone in our room. Location is perfect.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A room with a view! - Booked at the last minute.....needed to work in the city and did not want to stay in a hotel. I picked this place fast because it offered two bedrooms & the price. The apt. was exceptional.... View of the city.....Kitchen. Coffee in the morning.....Ceiling to floor views. So beautiful. A working desk. Lots of plugs. Comfortable seating and bed. Great TV and music. I hope it is available the next time I need to be in Chicago.....I would certainly stay again!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Stayed for a conference. Will definitely return. Even my friends who live there wanted to stay!
- ROBERT (10/5): then best hotel stay ever - the front desk guy who works the morning shift always made us feel like VIP's ..after being rerouted to Philly because of a snow storm i notified the hotel immediately that I would be arriving a day late. When i arrived and got the Royal treatment i recieved my package and keys and went to my room ..however keys didnt work i went back to the front desk and the guy working the desk dropped everything to come to my aid of letting me in my room then going for a new set of keys at the office ....EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE.....
- Not Provided (8/5): - the TV didnt work the whole time
- Not Provided (10/5): Great Chicago Stay - Perfect for our needs! Close to public transport and activity venues.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent location & value - The Bridgestreet provides a high quality, budget-minded place to stay on the Magnificent Mile with easy access to CTA trains, off-site conference facilities, and a wide variety of places to eat and shop. Front desk staff were professional and helpful.
- Chris (6/5): Nice place, bad service. - The apartments are very pleasant - but the furniture feels cheap, and the plumbing is not up to par. Made repeated requests to the "concierge", but none were actually fulfilled. Hallways were extremely cold for unknown reasons.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Great Location, Excellent View, Terrible Bed - When we travel, we often book into Embassy Suites because we like the extra room and amenities that you get with a suite. We took a chance on this place because it was somewhat cheaper than the Embassy Suites just a block away.
In addition to having a living room and full kitchen, here's what we liked:
1. The Location. Close to shopping, restaurants, coffee shops (check out Cafe Integral on Ohio Street), transit (red line right out the door; State & Lake station a few blocks away).
2. The View. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a great view of the city. From the small balcony, we could also see the lake.
3. No Room Service. We appreciated that no one was coming in our room every day. No fresh towels, but we were only there for 3 nights, so we didn't mind.
We did NOT like:
1. The Bed. The bed in our unit was so worn that it completely concave. We couldn't steep on it, but when we asked if it could be replaced, staff replied that "all the beds here are soft - and old." After continuing to complain, staff eventually changed out the mattress (or maybe just flipped it, we're not sure). It was still bad, but not quite as bad. If you need/like a firm bed, don't stay here!
2. Street Noise. This is a busy area - and drivers in Chicago like to use their horns - A LOT. There is also a fire station just a block away and the emergency vehicles are called out frequently and it is LOUD!
3. The TVs. Small television are not up to current standards.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location - Great location; close to subway train and bus stops. We walked to almost all the sights from here! Loved that there was a great grocery store and Walgreens a block away! Great view form room and it was so nice to have a washer/dryer and a full kitchen! We went to grocery store and stocked up on items for breakfasts and snacks!
- Jon (10/5): Great Room, Location, and Staff - Stayed here for 3 nights in October with my six-year old son. Room exceeded expectations with large living room, bathroom and kitchen. Great views of the city from balcony and the large windows. Kitchen included a full-size stove, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker. Also had silverware, a wine opener, and glasses. Train and bus stops on the same block as hotel made sightseeing easy.
Staff was very helpful and offered suggestions on navigating the city, nearby restaurants, etc. Check-in process was a little slow but otherwise everyone was great. They were very considerate and still got us in our room before the official check-in time.
I also liked the security door that required a key fob scan or the doorman to buzz us through before accessing the elevators.
All in all, I'd say that if you are looking at hotels in this general area, this one is worth a little extra for the amenities you'll get in return.
- Brandon (2/5): Should be great, but it's terrible. - When I checked in, I was given a room key and went to the room - 2105. I walked in and was immediately overwhelmed with a smell of body odor. The entire room wreaked. I put my suitcase in the only room that wasn’t overwhelmed by the smell - the bathroom - and went back down to the gentleman at the front desk. I told him about the smell and asked if they had another room. He said they were totally booked. He told me, “You could go buy some Febreze and spray it in there.” I replied, “Do you have any Febreze that I could spray?” He said that he would check, but it would take a while.
I left and bought Febreze at the Jewel down the road - like I said, it’s a great location - and when I came back, the front desk associate had a half bottle of Febreze on the desk. I went upstairs to the room and proceeded to spray the entire place. The couch, the rug, the carpet in the bedroom - anything that could hold a smell. I used every last drop of Febreze in that bottle. Though the place now had Febreze notes to it, it still wreaked. I asked the front desk associate if I could cancel my room and he said I would have to contact a manager, but that the manager doesn’t come in until 9:30 the next morning. So I was stuck. I tried calling their corporate office and was sent to a voicemail box that was already full. Couldn’t even leave a message.
I went back up to the room, and realized that the smell wasn’t coming from any of the furniture, but rather from the vents. There were three vents in
- Verified traveler (6/5): lovely apartment; bed bed - This is not really a hotel. There is no room clean up service and there is no restaurant. However our apartment was lovely, the kitchen was very well appointed, we had a walk in closet, and the bathtub was huge. There were two televisions, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. We were unable to get the one in the living room to work, and the desk clerk who was the only staff member in the place that we saw, was unable to help. Also the bed was truly horrible. It was cheap, and slopes toward the center, and I slept poorly all three nights we stayed, trying to stay on my side of the bed.
- Bob (6/5): Condo vs Hotel - We chose this property because, as a condo, it offered more space than a similarly priced hotel room. Although it did offer more space, it lacked somethings expected in a short term rental such as facial tissues, the walk in shower had no shelves so that soap and shampoo had to be left on the shower floor. There were only two bath towels.
- Ryan (8/5): Altogether a great stay. - A great location, view and setup....but a couple of things fell short.
Master bed much too soft and everything funnels to the middle.
Coffee pot handle broken making it difficult to make coffee.
Wine glasses in cabinet but no wine opener(I realize its possible it was taken)
Also, it would be nice to have a soap dish or a shower rack/shelf of some sort as well as more towel racks/hooks.
Altogether we had a great stay for the Chicago Marathon but wanted to post a few tips that would have improved our stay.
- Thomas (10/5): - Beautiful views from high rise one bedroom condo with full kitchen, like living at home in Chicago. Very nice.
- George (10/5): Comfortable Unit in Great Location - We spent three nights in a one-bedroom unit on the 27th floor with a spectacular view to the west. The unit was comfortable and well equipped with two exceptions. It would have been nice to have kleenex and dish soap. But minor irritations in the grand scheme of things. The location is great. A subway station less than a block away and an easy walk to any type store or restaurant one might want. The unit had wall to ceiling windows and a small balcony. Noisy with windows open but quiet except for occasionial emergency vehicle sirens) when closed. Our sleep was NOT disturbed. This is NOT a hotel, however. Rather, it is designed for longer term corporate tenants. As such, there are very few hotel services available (not even a landline in the room), although the attendant on duty at the entrance was helpful and courteous. There is access to a well equipped fitness center. All in all, it is a great place to stay in downtown Chicago and given the hotel prices in the area, it seemed like good value for our money. We would be happy to return on a future visit.
- Hawk (8/5): Felr like a vacation home - Beautiful apartment with great views. Desperately needs a new mattress.
- Jean (8/5): Well appointed, well located, will come back - Aside from a mess-up at registration, which was not in the system through Expedia, it was a great stay. Accommodations were found next door for the night, then transferred the next morning after a delay, again some communications issues. Staff was quite helpful and I appreciated their assistance.
- EDUARDO (8/5): Great place to stay - Great place to stay. Romm was very clean great views of the city. The only thing I would change is the size of the bed. They need to be KINGS and not full size. I would stay there again though.
- sheryl (6/5): Very noise but good location - Very noisy because it's right beside the Red Llne tracks. But it's convenient if you want to take public transportation to downtown. Hotel and rooms are old but clean. Continental breakfast was very basic. Price was high for quality of hotel.
- William (8/5): Spacious Apt with world class Views. - Despite no Room Service, Maid Service & an antiquated Check In desk, wonderful views of River North through floor to ceiling Windows. This lovely 1bedroom apartment even had a balcony. It was locked and had to make several calls to have it opened. Great location with nice walk to anywhere in RN area. Will stay here again on future trips but hope Check In can be expedited.
- susan (10/5): Would Recommend - Great room! Great location! Only suggestion is that they replace the mattress in 2201. It sags in the middle.
- Dean (2/5): Horrible checkout - Never stay here if you expect to receive a folio that can be used for business expense report.
The staff will claim that the fees are collected by the booking agent and they cannot provide a bill even though bridgestreet shows up on the corp card billing statement. I called their office and entered and endless loop, being passed from the bridgestreet corporate office to to the local office in Chicago.
I ended up eating the expense as the documentation was so substandard it was a joke !
- Heidi (8/5): Great Value - Great Value, and very comfortable. Air conditioner was very confusing as there were two units in one room. Great Views, Fantastic Location!!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great stay. Perfect location, facilities, nice staff. Highly recomended.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Hotel. - I heard a great stay. Extended for 2 more nights.
- Claire (10/5): Perfect - Great location for numerous restaurants, shopping, and activities. We walked to museums, parks, zoo, architectural cruise and play. Staff
Staff friendly. So much nicer than a hotel . Whole foods, Traders Joe and local full grocery stores within a couple of blocks. Able to enjoy the amenities of the roof top patio, gym and indoor pool shared with the Palomar Hotel.
Definitely would stay again.
- Pavanjit (10/5): No.1 recommendation in Chicago - Extraordinay stay - spacious laid out apartment with superb views. The kitchen was well stocked with top quality equipment, utensils, cutlery and crockery. Beats the best 5 star hotel room by a mile. The build quality of the apartment is great - modern bathroom fittings, floor to ceiling windows, balcony, wood flooring, kitchen island... Location, cleanliness, furnishings, comfort, concierge support - all were excellent.
- Marios (10/5): Very Nice! - Nice stay!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Highly recommend...only complaint was the constant sound of emergency vehicles
- Joe (6/5): Not really a hotel... - I'm torn about this "hotel." According to Expedia it's a hotel, but it's more closely an apartment rented nightly. There's the full kitchen and washer/dryer in the room, but there's no maid service (I was there for almost a week and never had service), no room service (you can order from the restaurant next door), and no bell service (they couldn't hold my bags after check out).
First entry into the room looked nice, but it was not cleaned well and needed some TLC. The oven drawer was broken, the coffee table and stains, and the paint on the ceiling was peeling in the corner. None of those were too serious, but I was disgusted that they only clean between customers and can't even do a good job. They left an empty Cottonelle package on the towel rack in the bathroom and there were multiple hairs strewn across the tub and on the tiles surrounding the shower.
For the positives, it is a quiet location and I never heard any noise from the neighbors even though I'm a light sleeper. It's also centrally located and there's plenty of good places to eat nearby. In addition, there's a train stop right across the street so it's an easy trip to/from the airport.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A beautiful space and incredible view. Really happy about the stay.
- Natasha (8/5): Stunning view, great workable kitchen - Exactly what I needed. Great view comfortable beds. However in the kitchen I could have done with some liquid dish soap and a sponge-you can't chuck everything in the dishwasher and as I discovered people have, so knives and cups have dried food on them-not so nice. Little stingy on horrible coffee in room, should have a small carton of milk as well. Plenty of dishes, pans and plateware, good sized food shop a block away and the view-stunning!
- Charlie (10/5): MUCH better than a hotel room! - My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights while we saw the sights in downtown Chicago, and attended the AXPONA audio show at the Westin O'Hare. I cant say enough about how cool it was to have a snazzy, fully stocked apartment at our disposal. The full size oven was great for heating up leftover deep dish pizza from Lou Malnati's (don't listen to anyone else - this is the gold standard, and that's coming from a New Yorker!). We didn't use the stackable washer/dryer, but it was nice to have it, just in case. One of my favorite features? The little desktop stereo system, complete with separate speakers and an iPod dock and remote to control your iPod from across the room! I can't begin to describe how cool it was to have our own personal music to listen to while on vacation.
The bed and pillows were quite comfy - a bit on the soft dide, but we like it that way. The tub is a soaking tub - extra deep and long, so great for evenings when you need an immersive, relaxing bath to ease those tired feet and back from shopping and carrying packages.
Out the ftont door, the train station is one block to the right (my trip to the Westin, and to O'Hare on the way home, we're about one hour -take the Red Line from Grand St to Jackson Ave, then a short tunnel walk to the Blue Line O'Hare train), 7 Eleven is one block to the left, the New York Bagel Deli Co. is right around the block in front of you (frigging good bagels, good plentiful lox spread, wrapped chocolate chip cookies splendid).
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location, close to Navy Pier, Metro station and lots of great restaurants. Had a room on the 26th floor with fantastic view of the city through floor to ceiling glass walls! Really an apartment with full kitchen and cable TV. WOULD DEFINITELY STAY HERE AGAIN!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Sleepless in Chicagol - The room was great except for the bed. I should have asked for a different room or bed as it was the most uncomfortable bed I ever slept on. When I said something the clerk identified the problem as a sagging bed and said he was sorry but did nothing in terms of a solution. I should have been more assertive as my back and neck are still quite sore. I have an appt. with a physical therapist next week and am sleep deprived.
- Verified traveler (8/5): More for your money - For the price of the surrounding hotels, you get a full apartment. This is great if you are travelling with more than one person and would like a little extra space or if you are staying for more than a couple days and would like to cook, do laundry and feel more comfortable. The front desk was friendly and helpful with suggestions and such for the local area.
- Verified traveler (10/5): State and Grand - Very sizeable room...great to have a kitchen...good workout facility...very close to the red subway line and a grocery store across the street. I'd recommend staying here to friends.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great for business - Personally I get fed up both with eating in restaurants and lack of space in hotel rooms when traveling for business. I normally book direct with the Palomar (on the lower floors of the same building and having first made sure Expedia isn't cheaper to use the Palomar's price promise). So while searching for a good deal in Chicago due to prices being absolutely insane when I planned to visit, this came up and I jumped at the chance! Let's get one things clear:
* This is not a hotel *
These are serviced apartments and therefore the bed isn't made every day and you do have to clean up your own mess to some extent, the person on the front desk may not always be there, etc. What you do get is a living area, kitchen and bedroom... and great views across the city. As an added extra you can use the Palomar's gym and pool.
Other posts have complained about general cleanliness, but I had no issues at all (and never have at the Palomar either). Everything was as clean as I would expect and the only draw back of staying here is the fire station only a block to the west; you know when they're on a call - but then you'll get this at any of the hotels in this particular area.
Note: you can only book a room for less than 30 days on Expedia. Keep checking often as I don't know how long before each month they put uncontracted rooms on!
- Cici (8/5): Perfect location in River North - Really enjoyed our stay! I liked the soft and comfy mattress. My husband thought it was to soft. You could hear the wind swirling around in the hallway like a vacuum cleaner. You could also hear the sounds if a busy city 30 floors up!! So if you don't like city noise stay in the burbs or a hotel with sound proof windows.
- Chad (8/5): Nice place overall. - Nice place. A few concerns about some cleanliness in the bathrooms and kitchen but would stay there again.
- vicki (10/5): wedding gift - i booked this for my son's wedding present. The staff was very accommodating when asked to please make sure they have a balcony. I would recommend this place to anyone
- Laura and Frank (10/5): Lake and River View in 1 Apt! - Clean, very comfortable furnishings, great view, so much to do in walking distance. Best "hotel" experience ever.
- Cheryl (10/5): State & Grand is grand! - My daughter and I spent three nights at State and Grand as we toured Midwest colleges over spring break. Location was convenient (either walking, train, or bus) for eating, shopping and seeing the sights of Chicago! Apartment was nicely decorated; sky line views from the 24th floor were beautiful. The front desk employees were friendly and helpful.
- Jeff (10/5): Having an Apartment in the City was Nice. - I really enjoyed having an apartment in downtown Chicago. I wish I could have stayed longer. Having a kitchen and laundry came in really handy.
- Stanley (10/5): Exceeded expectations by a factor of 10 - Couldn't have asked for more. Perfect room with unparalleled comfort.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Luxury Condo - This is a beautiful high-rise condo in a great area of Chicago. For service all they have is a concierge and a doorman. That was good enough for me. I had a view of both the lake and the river. Decor and furnishings are up to date. One of the Red Line subway stops is just around the corner. There are good restaurant choices right near the hotel (condo).
- Priya (10/5): Great place to stay. - Great Location and friendly staff.
- Nicoli (10/5): Great Hotel, but bad first impression - Great apartment suites, beautiful arrangement surrounded by amazing skyline views. However we book a double bedroom, but only received a single bedroom. Our party consisted of 3 adults and an infant baby. Thus, we paid for two nights at this venue, but only received a single bedroom instead of the double bedroom we paid for. Though, they gave us a double bedroom unit the second day, it really made our first night restless and uncomfortable. However, I do plan to come back here again next time I visit Chicago!
