Guest Reviews
- D4815UJjessem (2/5): Bedbugs, Musky Dark, Dirty,Hotel - Unfortunately I needed to stay due to a temporary emergency... Unfortunately it was so bad I went back to sleep in my car.
Bedbugs riddled the beds. (Was given an upgrade and that had bedbugs too! So I checked out)
Filthy vents, room smells like cigarettes and musky... very poor lighting even with lights on so dark. Carpets stained with who knows what all over the hotel. Questionable people staying there...
Worst hotel experience. On a positive I did get refunded the nights I didn't stay.
Place is almost non salvageable but they aren't even trying to keep up with basic hygiene.
- missymjc (10/5): Hats off to the Chef! - The menai has long been a Burnie staple, and back in the day, it was the place to be to see some of the biggest Aussie bands of the time. As happens in many towns over time, it blurred into the background of Burnie and lost some charm. So when we visited family for a weekend away and heard the Menai was doing breakfast and offering a month of buy one brekky and get one free, we thought we'd give it a go.
Well... A revamp/Reno of the bar into a fabulous restaurant/Cafe style space with beautiful views of bass straight, and fabulous service, gave us good vibes and happiness for our morning feels. But nothing could have prepared us for how incredible the food would be. Apart from the fact that 4 of us ordered food that included the Chefs award winning (best in Tasmania 2022) sourdough bread, which was absolutely fresh, flavourful and authentic, the meals were incredible and had us all (group of 6), captured, and planning our next visit. Our 5 year old raised her arms halfway through her crepes and a hashbrown to exclaim " best food ever!"
Highly recommend and cannot wait to go back !!
- Barbara (4/5): - The room smelt really bad. The power point in the bathroom didn’t work. The lighting in the bathroom was very dim. Not bright enough. The mirror was dirty. But at least the sheets were clean and clean towels With Covid these days the room was not clean enough. Very disappointing
- Nicola (8/5): - We booked this hotel because it has a bar and resturant attached. When we got there they were we were disapointed to learn that both were closed for 2 days so we opted to stay else where. The manager lee was very nice and agreed to give us a full refund through hotels.com. The room had a view, a mini fridge and was spacious.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very basic accomodation. Old facility requires renovation
- Tom (4/5): - Nothing,Staff didnt care, got shown to an inferior room to the one i booked, had to say "this is not the room i booked",but finally got right room, dont serve breakfast, just not a nice experience, will not recommend.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It’s OK better than quite a few in Burnie we have stayed at
- Verified traveler (4/5): - When I arrived to check in everything was closed, even though I arrived before check in finished. There was only one powerpoint in the room, so I had to make choices about what to plug in...did I want to see in the dark, or stay warm. Won't be staying here again...needless to say.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Scary - Dark carpark, empty unwelcoming place
- Jeanine (6/5): - It was private
Even thou there are many others around
The manager a very nice man
Very central location as well
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Very old. Smelt.weird very dated and the beds were very uncomfortable no air con or heating. Blankets the age.of my great grandmother
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Liked the price and didn't like the condition...is really due for a good reno as very old and tired
- Sue (8/5): Pleasing - It was good accommodation.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - People and the service are very good good rooms the food is nice close to town thank you
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Thoughtful manager, dinner at night quite pleasing. This is a working persons hotel in my opinion, the rooms were clean and tidy, old fashioned, but fellow travellers were of a similar age to us looking for clean tidy room.On the downside, there were quite a few stairs.
- Robert (8/5): - Very good service. I was running very late for checkin 9.00pm in fact. I called them of that, it was no problem. Very clean. Very Happy.
- John (10/5): - Good accomadation food excellent and prepared on site overall very good hotel
- Rodneygoss (8/5): - I liked the hotel because I was working down the west coast of Tasmania and I wouldn't get to the hotel to after hours and and I let the hotel know and the gentleman was there let me in thank you the rooms are comfortable clean I've stayed here a number off times I like it
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Helpful with a late check in. Clean and tidy. Not too far from main street of Burnie.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Check in was very easy and the staff very friendly and helpful.
- estelleblackbur (10/5): - It was all excellent for the type of property it is. It's an old hotel, which makes it cheaper and pleasant. Helpful friendly staff, all you need in an old-fashioned room. View over the port. Great value for money.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Mould in bathroom, milk supplied was off, stairwell was covered in urine. Positives were the beds were comfortable and the shower was hot and pressure was good
- Kylie (6/5): Needs some attention - Restaurant and bar were great, friendly service good meal, clean and tidy. The rooms really let this place down, bed was tidy and clean, floors were very dusty around edges and room was dusty overall, strong odour in hallway.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great value and good food location is just a few minutes to the town centre.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The beds were comfortable, but the whole building had a revolting smell of stale smoke. It only had one window that would open but we couldn’t keep that open all. Night as there were no fly screens. The smell was putrid, old and disgusting. We didn’t expect anything great, as it wasn’t an expensive room, but these rooms should not be booked out with this smell lingering. It made the stay very unpleasant. Luckily we only used the room to sleep as we were there to spend time with a very sick relative. I wouldn’t have wanted to relax there.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice and clean, very quiet, comfortable bed. Would stay there again for the price.
- David (8/5): Burnie visit - Service was friendly across the board. Bed was comfortable and facilities adequate. More attention should be given to ensuring bed lights etc work in the rooms
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I've stayed a through times when I come to burnie and I'll there again thank you
- Verified traveler (6/5): - hard to believe such a lousy place has so many rooms!! Perhaps 200 years ago when it was built it was nice castle in the middle of nowhere. Shame they haven’t bothered to upgrade it since.
- jackmX4180EA (2/5): Outdated and should be demolished - Old, overpriced, cold, musky. They put making money above anything else. The music is so loud of a weekend good luck sleeping. It’s sad to see because someone with half a brain could make it half of what it has to be and they’d be laughing. Clearly management are out of touch and behind the times.
- Sandra (2/5): - told when booking in that the "hot water had to come from Launceston so wait a while for the shower to heat but there was plenty of hot water" not so. The hot water ran out. the heating in my room was pathetic. a small coil oil heater. didn't heat the room at all on such a cold night. the fridge door wouldn't close but nothing would have gone off due to the room temperature. I would not recommend this place even if it was the last place available.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good value for money, rooms reasonably priced for what they are.
Staff are great, but rooms are tired.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean and well priced. Easy to check in, friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I work in the mines down the West coast when I'm in Burnie I stay at the menai it's a good hotel to say at staff are friendly and helpful
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Staff are freindly helpful rooms are clean bed are comfortable the food is good
- Ebony (6/5): - You get what you pay for, but this motel definitely needs a facelift to make it more liveable.
Staff were friendly upon check in, but everything there after was “meh.” The family suite has no ambience whatsoever. When we arrived, the fridge wasn’t turned on, despite having long life milk capsules in it for who knows how long, the “kitchenette” is actually in the soace with twin beds, which is also directly attached to the bathroom (which was the size of a cupboard) and the shower was warm, but temperamental and there’s no vanity to put even a toothbrush on. There is no door to either of the sleeping areas, so if privacy is of any concern, I’d suggest booking elsewhere.
This property is missing some basics such as an ironing board, a hairdryer, a hand towel, shampoo and conditioner, working powerpoints near the bed. (People with sleep apnea machines be aware.)
If you’re after a bed to lay your head at the end of the day, this will do the trick at a low cost, but our family won’t be staying here again.
- Janet (8/5): - Great views but lots of stairs to take your luggage up
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I had a comfortable say at the meni hotel rooms are good good view over Burnie the bed was comfortable had a meal it was good .the stuff were friendly and good service it was a good stay
- maurgold (2/5): Don't waste your money!! - We recently stayed at the Menai. It was last minute, and we didn't have much choice of accommodation due to a family emergency. We arrived at 1.45, check in was 2.00. the sign said Reception upstairs, but the doors were all locked, we tried the door to the bar, locked as well....this was over the Christmas holiday. I rang the number on the door, said to the manager we were there to check in, only to be told he'd gone out for lunch and to come back at 4.00. When we did eventually check in I was shown where breakfast was and told help yourself the milk is in the fridge and the cereal is in the cupboard...for $5.00 per head. The room was small and smelt musky, the fridge hadn't been turned on. The bathroom was sooo small. That night all we heard were trains, and were woken very early by trains. Couldn't shower because it took over 5 mins for the hot water to become just luke warm. I'm not quite sure if there were bullet holes in the bedhead or just really big holes where screws had been. If you feel like staying in the Bate's Hotel from Physco then this is the place to go. It is definately not worth $110 per night.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The rooms were spacious and well presented, however the attached hotel was closed for the christmas period,
The motel is close to amenities and the city centre
- J8705RWPaul (2/5): Over priced - Recently stayed at this place and, judging by the pics and the $110 a night, assumed it would be pretty good... boy was I wrong.
The licensed restaurant and Bar/lounge were closed for the Christmas/New year period, as was reception!! Check-in was noted as 2pm, however when we got there and found a phone number to call, the caretaker informed us that he was out to lunch and wouldn’t be back til 4.
2hrs later we finally got our rooms, only to find them tiny, run down & tired, with a bathroom the size of a closet, and a small bar fridge from the 70’s that wasn’t even turned on. We quickly dumped our stuff and went out for the evening. When arriving back that night we struggled to sleep due to the train that seemed to be outside our window, and the yelling & arguing from the room down the hall.
Thank god we were only there 1 night!!
- Kate (8/5): - Nice hotel and close to cbd. The room was OK but a very small bathroom. Considering it was a last minute booking we were grateful to get it. Staff quite friendly.
- Rs (10/5): - Comfortable stay. Quiet. Friendly staff. The room had a fridge , microwave and coffee tea making facilities.
- Don (10/5): - Easy WiFi, excellent restaurant and menu, Quiet location yet close to town. Friendly staff
- donnapatriciah (2/5): Terrible Don’t Bother! - Don’t waste your money, this is the worst accommodation we’ve ever stayed at! It started with a ‘Fawlty Towers’ moment following a sign to Reception but when we arrived another sign saying Reception upstairs, so upstairs we go only to find a sign saying Reception downstairs?? A man came through a fire exit & asked could he help? After check in we were shown to the room which was small, old & tired. The bathroom is ridiculously small, so small in fact that when you sit on the loo you can reach the toilet paper on the opposite wall!
There was a few dodgy characters hanging around the motel & then you have the freight trains to contend with with horns blowing until late at night & starting before 6am next morning & we also had to turn the old fridge off as the motor was extremely loud. We could go on but basically if we hadn’t booked on booking.com last minute which was non refundable we would never had stayed but never again!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - For a 1 night stay it was adequate. Would select somewhere different next time.
- Donna (4/5): - Very tired bathroom too small had to ask for a heater no aircon very old and tired. Hotel convenient meals good average staff frendly breakfast $5 help yourself cereal and toast. All quite basic.
- Nikki (8/5): - quiet, close enough to city and facilities but far enough to avoid city noise
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Not worth the money we spent on accomodation. A lesson in cleaning is highly recommended.
- sianjani (8/5): Marist Old Scholars Reunion FIRST choice! - The Menai is the perfect spot for our yearly reunions, and the staff is friendly and obliging. There is plenty of room at The Menai, we can spread out, relax and enjoy our evening with fellow students, some we have not seen for over 50 years!!
Meal selection is great, drinks reasonable and the time just flew...we laughed and reminisced the night away with another night to remember at THE MENAI...
And found out AC/DC played there back in the seventies, what a night that would have been!!! I am looking forward to our big 60th next year....Barry Saltmarsh
- Verified traveler (6/5): Clean and tidy - Central. Clean and comfortable bed. Staff could have plugged the heater in so the room is warm on arrival and could of had the fridge turned on so we could put our drinks in a cold fridge and not wait so long for them to get cold. Cost cutting on power I guess.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not what i paid for - As the picture of the room looked out to the sea, we were shoved into the side of the hotel overlooking the carpark, no power points worked, the tv didn't fit into the stand it was on so you were watching it sideways,
Whe we moved the table to put the tv on for the kids bith table legs were broken, the heater didn't work, beds were hard. We eneded up leaving after 1 night even though we paid for 2 nights
- karenabester (6/5): Good food - too cold - We are locals who eat out regularly While the restaurant food is good and value for money we won't be returning until summer. The restaurant is huge and cold. It needs to be sectioned off and either the heat pump cranked up or a good wood fire put in the fireplace.
- Kabodan (8/5): economic motel cosy warm & rooms got everything - The staff are very friendly rooms clean full of everything you need for a relaxing stay just the hot & water tape are separate ( old style) is the only catch
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The Accomodation was OK. There was no heating in the room and it was a very cold night.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Within an hour of checking in and going to the bar for a drink we had witnessed an altercation outside between what looked like a permanent resident and some other guy. The police arrived with two cars and 5 police officers.
It was noisy in the building both nights with drunk people in our hallway knocking on our door and yelling. The quilts in our room had suspicious white stains on them. The milk in the fridge was out of date. There was nowhere really to sit and watch TV together as a family.
It's definitely not a family friendly hotel but if you are young and want somewhere cheap and nasty to stay after a night out then go for it.
- michaelcJ1222AQ (6/5): A walk back in time - I’m reviewing this as a business traveler and what is important to me when traveling.
This hotel was dated but for the cost wasn’t expecting much more.
The water pressure in the shower was ordinary.
The bed was nice and firm. The pillows were dreadful. Really need to be replaced.
Staff were very nice.
Pub patrons on Saturday night/ Sunday morning very rowdy
- 6120 (2/5): Needs a revamp. - Accommodation very yesteryear, Only one bedside shelving in a Queen room, Shower & hand basin need a good clean as did the Microwave inside, ,Top of light above bed thick with dust as was the tiny clock, no room to move one side of bed or bed end ,No room service on weekend not informed on booking, very ordinary, Dinner was enjoyable thanks to the young chef,
- Verified traveler (2/5): - I would not recommend this hotel to anyone as no ventilation unclean toilet seat didn't stay up battery flat in tv remote security entrance constantly left open .could not sleep due to loud music drunk people on the stair well when trying to get to room i give this hotel 1 out of ten.
- Mark (10/5): Well priced and comfy - A good spot for the one night stay. Great staff - friendly and helpful. Good meal in the bar/restaurant. Simple breakfast for only $5.
- s (2/5): Terrible - Got no sleep due to loud band playing and people partying outside until 4am. People walking the corridors yelling all night. Have now been told by people that it is a prostitute hangout. Never again will I stay here
- stacey (10/5): - Excellent price. Beds were fantastic. Had the best sleep.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Ok for the price but very dated. Good food & service.
- millsworld (8/5): Nice place to stay - The rooms are very reasonably priced, clean and functional. Not far from Burnie CBD and free parking. I thought the facilities here were good. The bar and restaurant were relaxed, reasonably priced and a pleasant way to end your day. The lady who ran the bar and restaurant was awesome, friendly and super helpful. She made our stay that much better. Would happily come back here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice hotel - Was able to have a meal, friendly staff easy to find
- Lorelle (4/5): very very basic hotel - No suitable for children as the door handles are all so high my 6 year old couldn't reach them even on his tippy toes. The tv didn't work, the window didn't open. It is very very dated. Staff were very friendly.
- Shantelle (6/5): Quiet hotel - The main disappointment for us was that nothing was really open. We arrived in Burnie on a Sunday so most things were shut. The restaurant and bar attached to the hotel was closed. It was located within a 5-10 minute walk to the beach and was in a quiet part of town. The room we stayed in was a bit confusing, you had to go into the other bedroom to go to the bathroom. There was no kitchen sink to wash dishes in either our room or the kitchen area for breakfast. We were provided only a small selection of crockery (it was a room that could accomodate 5 people but only had 2 of anything and no sppons appart from 2 teaspoons. There are a lot of powerpoints but most of them are old which I didn't want to use. The curtains weren't quite wide enough to cover entire windows. There was no fan in the bathroom so it would steam up while you were having a shower. I feel like the whole building needs an upgrade.
- Greg (6/5): Living in the 70s - The Menai is like returning to the late 1970s, except for WiFi and Flatscreen TVs,old fashioned meals , old fashioned service, good prices on food and accomodation. For me very close to my work.
Good value overall
- Tredricho (4/5): Meal over priced and underwhelming - A small steak priced at $30 I would expect to be if reasonable quality. It was thin, over-cooked and full of gristle. Sauce was flavourless and the salad consisted of a few small pieces of lettuce, tomato and a couple of pieces of capsicum. For the price it was one of the worst meals I’ve eaten. Save your money and eat somewhere else.
- spike (6/5): Cheap and cheerful - Our aim was to have a fun road trip on a limited budget.
All the hotels we booked were low budget,
We were very satisfied with the hotel accomodation and food.
Overall cheap and cheerful.
- bradoxi (2/5): Appalling, over priced and 'workin girls!) - We went for a wedding and found the meals very average and the hotel manager hovering over our tables. Then it gets worse we had accommodation there and saw a couple of asian ladies in bra and panties wandering about the accommodation leading seefy old guys to their rooms. The thudding of their activities on the walls was very disturbing. The rooms are very old need more than a bit of paint to bring them up to standard. Wont ever set foot in there again.
- Peter (6/5): Cheap and reasonable hotel - Value for money hotel
- Nikki (6/5): Great country pub accommodation - Cosy apartment situation under pub. Restaurant was very good. Close to town.
- G (6/5): Good old school hotel motel - Clean and convenient old school hotel motel. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Overall good value no frills accommodation
- jenza (4/5): Hotel on steep slope. . - Difficult to access. entrance include steps and some steps have narrow treads.
room cramped. no bedside bench/stand. no counter top in bathroom. very small bathroom. shower curtain and rod fell down when touched. No air con but two heaters. No electric blankets and only one thin wool blanket on each bed.
no room in kitchen . not a pleasant room. TV very poor to no reception, .Carpets miss-matched and unpleasant smell in corridor
- 91darrenw (8/5): Clean, well looked after and good value for the price - The place is old (70'a) but well maintained and spotless. Everything worked. We arrived late and after a quick phone call greeted and checked in. Don't expect the Hilton but as I said. when considering a decent budget hotel we had no complaints at all
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nothing flash but clean and has the main things you need.
- xanderdad (2/5): Worst experience!!! - The worst place i have dined at. I wait over and hour and a half for a schnitzel. Service was terrible and the rest of the meals are worst than hospital food. I would have been happier to have a couple of drinks then went to McDonalds for a meal.
- WJohnston65 (2/5): Depressing - This is just an old depressing run down hotel. Throw in a few strange hang a rounders, a poor location and indifferent service and you've got the perfect recipe for staying somewhere else.
Generally I would like to say something positive but I can't even recommend the price.
- Tracey (4/5): A huge old hotel with almost no one in it - This massive old pub is clearly not drawing a lot of customers. While my room was generally clean, the bathroom is pretty tired & smelled a little like a men's toilet. I had a meal in the restaurant (steak) & let's just say the cook needs to do get a bit more training under his belt. I paid an extra $5 for a continental breakfast, & cheap as that is, it still wasn't worth it.
On the plus side, it was a big room, comfy bed & nice view out to the water. The staff were friendly & helpful.
- wme797362018 (6/5): Wonderful view - The Menai Hotel Motel has been part of the landscape at Burnie for a long time and it is a busy watering hole in a town where drinking is a popular activity. Having stayed at a few places in the Burnie area over the years I thought I would give it a go because I was intrigued by its enormous size and I wondered what the accommodation would actually be like. My only reservation was that the hotel was more of a pub than a hotel and that the noise from the bar would be annoyingly loud. For this reason I booked a deluxe suite, thinking that anything called a suite would have to be free from bar noise and unappealing people. I could not have been more correct. The room itself was old fashioned and rather charming because of it. A large sitting area was pleasantly furnished, the bed was large and comfortable and the bathroom was small but perfectly adequate and well appointed. Cable TV and wifi were very good. There was a microwave/kitchenette/bar-fridge galley which made simple self catering easy. Housekeeping was friendly and very informal (“You don’t need anything do you?”). The room was extremely pleasant, private and very quiet even though there were functions on in the bar area on each of the nights I was there. The most unexpected and delightful feature of the suite was the view. Large picture windows facing north gave a spectacular view of Burnie and the Bass Strait. During the day the sunshine flooded the room without making it too hot or startling and at night they delivered the most unexpectedly beautiful panorama of the city, its lights stretching out into the darkness of the ocean. Burnie is not what you would call a physically attractive place. A century of urban ugliness and industrial waste has left its mark on what was once a beautiful bay on the Bass Strait, but from this room at the Menai hotel Burnie looked quite spectacular, which is saying something. I was sorry to leave the Menai Hotel and I hope that somehow the hotel resists the temptation to update the suites with 21st century furniture and fittings because they way they are right now is very pleasant and comfortable indeed.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Dated, but good service - A very dated old motel, the room was extremely run down. However, the service was great, the gentleman who owns/runs this motel was very friendly and helpful. It was fine for our 1 night stay and served it's purpose. Not located in the town centre, so ideally you would want to have your own car to get around (which we did).
- brucef531 (8/5): Rooms on a budget - We stayed here for 4 nights, exploring the north-west of Tasmania and it was an excellent base. The dining room was popular on week nights (lots of tradies staying for the week) but quiet at the weekend, and although it was "pub food" it was well-prepared, well-priced and great eating. We availed ourselves of the $5 self-serve breakfasts which were fine. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Parking was free in the hotel grounds, and no shortage. It was a 30 minute walk to the main part of town. Our room was clean and comfortable but needed electrical work: just two double power points for electric blankets, bed lamp, heater, fridge, microwave and television. We coped with some swapping as needed! This is a good budget hotel and we enjoyed our stay.
- Justin (8/5): Great place to stay - Clean room, friendly staff and great meals at a good price. Worth the stay.
- tassie devil (6/5): Good overnighter - Nothing flash clean and comfy beds.half price meals very tasty. For the price it was a good overnight and staff helpful
- Verified traveler (6/5): Relaxing stay at Menai - Good place to stop for a recharge during the trip
- Anthony (8/5): Overnight before ferry trip to mainland - It was very good and the food was fabulous
- crikey435 (8/5): What a delightful place to stay and dine - We stayed and dined at the Menai and we constantly surprised. From the outside, although neat and tidy, this venue looks dated but once inside it become clear tat is is well cared for and very clean. The staff were all just fabulous, all happy and helpful with nothing too much trouble. The food was cheap but top notch and we all experienced an outstanding pub meal. Top of the order was the surf and turf. Thoroughly enjoyed visit and absolutely recommend to all
- Matt (8/5): Value for money - Basic rooms with comfortable beds. Meals were excellent and great value for money. All staff friendly and helpful. Will recommend.
- sallyharig (8/5): very welcoming - come to town for a wedding and had a 2 night stay which was very enjoyable. The owners and staff made us feel very welcome and made our stay enjoyable. Great food and the rooms are a little old but everything worked and they were very clean.
- Yves (10/5): - Nice staff and good cheap meals
- Tristan (10/5): Great Value!! - Stayed in a room with floor to ceiling windows with a great view, for the price you can't go past it.Friendly staff and half priced meals in the restaurant, also $5 all you can eat breakfast. Will be staying again.
- shelby (2/5): Very outdated and cold - Very outdated and cold had a terrible smell was in good location though nice and close to centre of town. Had a good view
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The room was clean, beds ok to sleep in, great service.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Would have been great in its day - I guess in its day this would have been a pumping and flash hotel. now days it is just a little run down, clean and neat but not somewhere you would take your wife for a get away. I was staying for work so it was fien for that.
