Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (10/5): beautiful - Great stay. It is a beautiful place and the cabin was spacious and comfortable - as was the common room.
The kitchen is outdoors and provides cooking utensils but don't expect anybody else to clean for you. Also you should provide your own food.
As it is pretty far out the landscape and the stars are amazing.
If the owner is not at the reception when you arrive, just give him a call. He is friendly and fun and can give you some tips for hiking.
We did enjoy our stay.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Dated and Dirty - We wish we had read the reviews before booking. The place is very dated and had nothing in the cabins except beds and a very old dirty bathroom. There was no TV, Fridge, Tea/coffee making facilities, Toaster etc in the cabins. You had to go to an outdoor communal kitchen that was like a big open shed and full of cobwebs, animal droppings and pretty much everything was covered in dust. The continental breakfast was non existent. Again you had to try and find something in the fridge outside and hope you were not taking someone else food as you were not allowed to take food into your cabin. We won't be going back
- Jan (2/5): Dump in grampians - No towels no sheets no toiletries no breakfast even though we had prepaid for it. The place was so dirty and not anything of interest for a tourist. As Australians we were embarrassed that this was accommodation for overseas visitors. We were under the impression it was 3 stars. We have stayed in a lot of 3stars accommodation beforw and this was rhe worst by far. I want my money back!
- Pascal (10/5): Great bush experience. Good base to expl Grampian - A great alternative to the touristy Hall's Gap.
The bungalow was spacious and clean. Great beds and bed linen.
Cooking amenities in the breakfast building.
Steve, our host, was a great source to learn about the region, the wildlife, the hikes and, above all, the people.
Of course, if you need the type of comfort offered by a 4 star hotel, this place is not for you, but being in the middle of nowhere is mind-blowing when you scan the sky at night (a dome of stars, stardust, "starmilk" we had never seen anywhere, even in Colorado or in the middle of the Pacific ocean), the sight of mobs of kangoroos is amazing.
Highly recommended!
- Poonam (2/5): Very bad experience - Wasn’t happy with the stay that we were expecting, it’s inside the bushes, no mobile network, as we have kids, they gave us the the house inside the bushes, which were not safe and risky. As Free breakfast was mention, there was no staff to serve u, dirty kitchen area. Water wasn’t safe to drink, It’s good for teenagers to live in bushes there but not good at all for a family with kids.there are no market around, no people, it’s just empty land around u,you just have to drive around. Visiting places are quite away from the stay place. Wasnt happy at all. Won’t go there again.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Lovely owner & location but dirty & dilapidated. - The owner met us on arrival and was very friendly and gave us a brief tour. The location was lovely, allowing us to see a lot of wildlife and view the Grampians in the wilderness. Unfortunately the communal area was dirty, greasy and full of cockroaches and mice! We couldn't even consider cooking there and so had to drive the 40-50km to Horsham to buy dinner. The bins were ransacked in the night, by possums I presume, and over 24 hours later still hadn't been cleaned up. Regarding our lodge, the curtains, bedding and screens were dirty and full of holes, the ceiling was covered in spider webs, the bathroom was filthy, the bin hadn't been emptied, and the cupboard under the sink contained unknown brown contents!!! Each morning we woke up with insects/spiders all over the bed and the walls were paper thin so, had we not been getting up before 7am each day, we would have been awoken by the dogs barking. The air con was fine though and the bed comfortable. I would advise paying a little extra and staying elsewhere.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A tranquil night in a wonderful wilderness
- anita (2/5): Worst hotel - No signal to make calls. No towels, soaps. No cups , plates , microwave. You have to go out to get all this I. Dark. Look scary place. Poor service. Waiting for long to get keys. Try to call but owner didn't pick the call. Couldn't get out of car there were 3 dogs. Not recommended to anyone.
Felt that I lived in cementry.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Assess Ears Wilderness lodge - The cabins are all the same and can be configured how you want by the owner.
Next time I would book through the owner by phone rather than online.
The online sites have different configurations for the cabins which is confusing.
However due to the remoteness of the place and poor phone reception it is often difficult to contact by phone. I was unable to do so and had to book online instead.
- Murray (8/5): One night stay - Isolated in the country for a real outback experience. At one with nature.
- Rob (8/5): - Understaffed at that point after Easter
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great host! - Facilities were basic- and just what you need. Nothing lavish. Three gorgeous dogs and a fantastic owner! The kitchen is a bit old/ basic - so we bought our own pans, would bring a sharp knife next time and that was fine :-)
- hj (8/5): right in the wild - the location requires you to drive the small roads into the forest, with lovely views of the mountains and sky. make sure you arrive early before sunset, and preferably with food that can be heated/cooked for dinner. there is a common kitchen area (sheltered) and lounge area (indoor) and 2 friendly dogs. nearest place to buy anything is Wartook which is 15 min drive away, and all of them close by 5pm. Enjoyed the sunset views and would have enjoyed the stars too if it wasn't so cloudy. Sadly we didn't experience kangaroos coming to our doorstep, which seemed very likely, but we did see many around on the way in and out.
- Arron (6/5): Interesting Hotel - As advertised that there was a pool which wasn't functional. The breakfast wasn't good milk out of date by 6 days and mouldy bread. The owner is a great bloke and serves a cold beer. The concept is great but needs work. Rooms where generally clean but need work also. I think a revamp is required overall and could make it great
- Leah (8/5): - Lovely stay
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great country getaway - Wonderful host beautiful scenery great spot . Won't be disappointed if your looking for a nice little getaway
- Sandie (4/5): Rustic getaway - Room itself clean and comfortable. No fridge or tea making. bathroom needs work but hot shower. Outside needs clean up. Common room OK - TV, bar and pool table. Communal kitchen disappointing. Bbq, fridges etc filthy. Mice and overflowing bins. Animal and bird droppings. Needs to be all screened in. Place has great potential. Owner more involved in Quad bike side.
- L. (2/5): Horrific experience with the property and Expedia! - Shocking experience: poor signage, nobody to greet us or check us in. Dangerous dogs freely patrolling the property (jumping on our car). Property looking very daggy, very different from what we have seen online. Didn't stay at the property, although we have paid for 3 nights (nobody was there to check us in).
Property owner blaming Expedia for not informing them about our booking...
Expedia: horrible experience, kept us for hours on the phone...We are still waiting for full refund...
Mature couple, professionals.
- Verified traveler (6/5): assesears - the cabin was quite comfortable we only slept there as we had family members staying at Wartook Rise where we joined in and had all our meals there There were lots of kangaroos throughout the Grampians we also went into Horsham wher we did some shopping
- Verified traveler (2/5): Too far from anywhere - The cleanliness and facilities were dreadful. Dirty camp kitchen with possum poo everywhere. We couldn't swim in the pool as it was unusable.
