Guest Reviews
- Sharon (4/5): - Very disappointed
I booked through hotel.com
Found out that other guest that booked threw expendanc paid 95-150 per night and did not have addional hotel fee
Hotel had me sign a charge fee of 25.00 dollars if i washed my face and make up got on towel
Worst was that you could not flush towel paper down toilet needed to discharge dirty towel paper in trash pail
That was a 45.00 dollar fine is you flushed toilet paper!
- Tammy (8/5): - Great location and love the welcome drink and open bar for guests. Very historic (aka old) building but worth the value. Got a deal at $48/nt. Staff are friendly.
- Julio (4/5): - Water on the floor of the room kept reaccumulating creating risky conditions.
Worse mattress. License should be revoked
- Erin (10/5): - Only stayed one night and wish we had longer, staff was fantastic as was the room, we really dug the bath & shower on the private balcony. Our flight wasn’t until 9pm and they had no problem holding our luggage until we had to get a cab to the airport. 10/10
- ALEJANDRO (4/5): - the only thing we can say is good is the attention of the reception and bar staff, but the hotel is completely dirty
- Gloria (10/5): - I love this place . If is available for my dates I choose them
- Anjuly (10/5): - I had a wonderful stay at El Colonial! From the moment I arrived, the staff was warm, welcoming, and attentive.
The room was clean and beds were comfortable.
The location was perfect and the overall atmosphere of the hotel was peaceful and relaxing.
I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting San Juan, PR.
- Ray Dean (10/5): - The staff was amazing and helpful with food choices, the 24 hr bar was huge bonus. Safe location and walkable to everything. Would highly recommend staying but you do have to remember they have no elevator so pack light
- Anthony (10/5): - Excellent staff. Close to infinite shops and restaurants. Very clean room and facilities
- Ruben (10/5): - Nice
- Monte (10/5): - Fabulous place! A well made fusion between modern and colonial... Great customer service, Cristian is very attentive and respectful... Fantastic location! Nice bar! Nice rooftop! And No Kids, SO GREAT!
*good water pressure in the sink, shower and toilet... Big TV... Powerful Air conditioner.
- Lizzie (10/5): - 👍
- Diana (10/5): - The Hotel Colonial was an interesting and charming place to stay, with an excellent location. The rooms were pristine and well cared for, and the service stood out for being warm and personal. From the rooftop, you could even catch a distant view of the San Cristóbal fort. The property has some quirky features, like 3 big bathtubs with showers on the roof. One thing to note: the stairs can be a real challenge if you’re not in good health, as there’s no elevator. Overall, a wonderful stay with a lot of character.
- robert (8/5): - Place was nice. The bathroom needed an upgrade
- Heather (6/5): - I’m not sure if we received a non renovated room, but our room floors were dirty with mildew and other stains. Other rooms we passed by appeared clean and newer tiled. The shower handle was backwards cold vs hot and we weren’t told until we took cold showers and asked why we didn’t have hot water. Some really easy fixes to get the hotel up to basic standards. I try to support local hotels as I travel around the world each month, and there are always hits or misses and this was a definitely a miss for the high customer rating. We checked out a day early and switched to another hotel for the last two days of our weekend.
- Lorena D. Armenteros (8/5): - I’m
- Taisha (10/5): - Staff are very nice. Rooms and hotel are very clean, chill and nice. I would’ve love to enjoy
hot water in the roof top tubs. Had a wonderful time though! Highly recommended.
- Brad (8/5): - The place is nice with great customer service. Our shower diverter did not work so we had a cold shower. I appreciate the bottle service and the open bar.
- Sarah (10/5): - I don’t even know where to start! This property was absolutely stunning! The staff were so incredibly welcoming and friendly. There’s so many things that make this an amazing place to stay! From the breath taking views from the rooms and roof top. To the unlimited complimentary bar. I would most definitely come back here in the future! Highly recommend!
- Chase (10/5): - The stay was excellent and the amenities were even better. A great staff, as well.
- Ganesh (10/5): - Location
- Angelia (6/5): - The room was clean , but we kept having trouble flushing the toilet. I would go down to lobby to use the bathroom. One of the staff members at front desk told me he was not a maintenance man and I was given a plunger to unstop the toilet myself. I tried several times and it didn’t work. The next day another employee was there when I went to address the issue and he came and fixed the toilet.
- Lorena (8/5): - The bathroom is small and the water mixing doesn't work well, taking shower was hot or cold never warm, That's my only complaint. Everything else was fine.
- Jeri (10/5): - This hotel is not for everyone but if you want to have the feel of living in Old San Juan, in an older eclectic apartment, then look no further! We had our own private balcony with a tub. Yes it’s on the 4th floor, but the stair climb daily was just added exercise. We had the best, relaxing anniversary trip. Oh and COMPLIMENTARY BAR actually means COMPLIMENTARY! An inviting bar, with friendly service that cost you nothing more to enjoy!
- Edna (10/5): - The staff was very helpful and welcoming
- Marcela (10/5): - We had an excellent experience. The staff was amazing
- Viviana (10/5): - Beautiful hotel and amazing customer service! Everyone was super sweet there
- Juan (10/5): - Simply OUTSTANDING
- Iriyali (10/5): - Loved adults only.
- Kayla (10/5): - Excellent location! Open bar too which is rare, I was shocked when I got there! Stayed one night prior to staying in another area of PR and would absolutely return!!
- Raquelle (10/5): - The perfect place to stay in Viejo San Juan. The views are truly spectacular, the building itself is stunning, and the staff is warm and welcoming. The open bar is the perfect finishing touch. I will definitely be returning.
- Jorge (10/5): - Excellent treatment. Good location and afordable.
- Jenifer (10/5): - Amazing service, 24 HR complimentary bar
- Billie (10/5): - It was great. The staff, especially Natalia and Felix were absolutely amazing!!!
- Yensen (10/5): - This hotel is amazing! From the friendly staff, free open bar, cleanliness, and convenient location, it was a great experience. I particularly liked the safety; only guests of the hotel could enter the lobby.
- Terry (10/5): - It was a great place to stay. It was clean and the service and staff were exceptional!!! We will definitely stay again!!!
- Martin (8/5): - N/A
- William (10/5): - Quirky in a good way
- Emely (6/5): - Okay stay in San Juan. The best part was the staff.
- Valeria (8/5): - Very nice staff and beautiful area!
- Rigoberto (10/5): - Great hotel with excellent service . Check in was fast and loved the welcome drink and open bar .

- Maria (10/5): - All staff were very nice and accommodating
- Belinda (10/5): - Would stay again!
- Ramnand (8/5): - Staff was great, the shower was bad the mixer did not work. Water temp kept varying badly.
- Heidi (10/5): - Walkable, quiet, great staff.
- Maritza (10/5): - Love this place! My go to hotel when visiting the west coast of the island. Extremely clean place and ver well maintained. The staff are wonderful. Parking onsite with added extra fees. Walkable to many restaurants, theater, shopping and the plaza.
- Daniel (10/5): - The staff is amazing!
- Casey (6/5): - You cannot flush any paper down the toilet due to the age of the pipes so you have to throw used Toilet Paper in the trash can. Our AC did not work well and the room was warm and muggy. They did provide a fan. The open bar was nice and the staff was very friendly.
- Bek (10/5): - Christian, Felix, Tatiana were absolutely great in greeting us. What a great place to stay.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Not what you expect from a 9 rating.
- Alexandria (10/5): - Great place to stay.
- Roberto (10/5): - I'd like to commend Christian and the staff at El Colonial! Super caring, knowledgeable, and pleasant to be around the whole time we stayed. Always had a smile on their face and their service was second to none. I'll definitely be back because of them. Restaurants, coffee shops, and bars are within walking distance. First time in PR and I had a great experience.
- Hunter (10/5): - We had an amazing stay even if it was just for the night. The staff was very welcoming and accommodating, we were able to check in early. We asked for dinner recommendations and were given several. Centrally located in el Viejo San Juan definitely recommend staying here as we will again in the future.
- Bradley (10/5): Excellent service and an open bar - Second time staying at El Colonial and still excellent in every way. Great location, nice rooms, cool rooftop, and excellent service. Wish I was there right now!
- Julissa (10/5): - Amazing service and amazing location.
10/10
- Aylwin (10/5): - Great Staff!!
- Victor (10/5): - Highly recommend this hotel. The staff is the best. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Provide great recommendations and great to work with.
- Kristina (10/5): Perfect location! - Perfect location, open bar and comfy bed! Would definitely stay again.
- Corey (10/5): - Staff was very friendly and pleasant. Held our bags before our room was ready and after check out. Would definitely stay here again.
- ramie (10/5): - Staff was amazing. Rooftop had a great view. We were on the 4th floor so kinda rough but they staff helped with out luggage. Free drinks definitely didnt hurt. I would recommend for sure
- Nick (4/5): - The property itself needs renovation and updates. The staff were responsive and the location was great.
- Adrian (10/5): - .
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good location for exploring Old San Juan. - There we no food options at the hotel but there are lots of restaurants around the hotel.
The bed was extremely comfortable.
- Gabriela (10/5): - Location was perfect. Close to bars, cafes, restaurants. The Staff was amazing. They kept our bags to go walk around even after we checked out.
- Edna (6/5): - Security was safe. Lobby area is very nice and modern. Friendly staff. Gave us a beverage from the bar while we waited for our room. Our room was on the third floor. No elevator. And no help with luggage. They held our luggage after checking out behind the open front desk. No storage closet.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Unforgettable trip - El Colonial was wonderful! I gave them 5 stars regardless of the water situation I experienced during my stay. I loved the open bar, my room and its view!! The staff was friendly! I'll definitely stay again!!
- ELISA (10/5): - Loved everything about El Colonial! Even though there was a water break in the island, the staff really went above and beyond to care for all the guests.
- Vidisha (6/5): - Open bar was helpful, staff was friendly, and location was good. Bathroom shower was dirty, and especially the shower floor (mold on floor, I showered with flip flops). Water pressure was very low so it took twice as long to shower.
- Jocary (10/5): - My stay at El Colonial was better than expected. I needed a single night’s stay and my expectations were exceeded. The hotel is beautiful the amenities were amazing and I would most definitely stay here once again with more time.
- Dennise (8/5): - Charming place, very clean but beware there’s no elevator if you’re traveling with heavy luggage or have knee problems, also some of the the workers are not the nicest, I was left talking to myself a couple of times.
- Priscilla (10/5): - The staff her the MOST NICEST OF ALL!!!!!!!
- Arislenia (10/5): - Overall we enjoyed our stay. The location is great for Old San Juan and the staff was friendly and helpful. There are no elevators but we did not mind. The open bar was great as well.
- Maria (10/5): - We done have water the 3 days . Was really dificulte for us . The hotel try to do the best .
- Lissette (10/5): - Great service!
- Israel (4/5): - Very nice location BUT dirty, no hot water and badly maintained, and dont respect any of the expedia VIP access.
- Tristan (10/5): - Great property
- Ivan (10/5): - Very nice service. The overnight front desk lady was very very nice.
- T (8/5): It is a good hotel but can be much better - The hotel was clean in good location and friendly staff. The open bar is excellent.
The only issue we have is the instability of water pressure depending on the time of the day.
There was a day and half that there was no water at all that we have to buy gallons of water from the stores to bath and flush toilets. We were told it is problem with city water that they have no control over. Nevertheless it makes our stay thoses days to be very uncomfortable.
- Joshuan (10/5): - Ok
- Brittany (6/5): - The accommodations were okay but not the best. The town did not have water when we were there - which is understandably not in the control of the hotel by any means. However- we had to buy gallons of water just to shower and use the toilet. This being said, we rightfully asked for some sort of refund and were told we would be given 50% back- and we did not get that amount. It is just disappointing to go away to a place seated so highly and not get the best service or at least the courtesy for services that can not be provided.
Also, we requested our room be cleaned and all they did was drop off towels. I think making the bed and giving the bathroom a little touch up would be nice.
I think Expedia needs to second guess this as a featured hotel. And also Expedia should step up when the hotels listed in their website do not and provide the refunds.
- Luis (8/5): - They are not prepared for situations where water service is interrupted.
- LaTenya (4/5): - Arrived after all day of flying and was advised that the hotel has no water, therefore, no shower, no flushing toilet during the entire stay. My husband and I are in town for a RC cruise and we have large suitcases that we had to carry up four flights of stairs with no help from the staff. The room was not the cleanest, the bed definitely was the size of a full not a queen but the location is great.
I feel misled by the pictures of the property and a few of the reviews.
- Brianna (10/5): - I have stayed in Old San Juan twice and have always stayed at El Colonial, reception is super friendly and helpful, Cristian was great at giving us recommendations every time. It's close to shops and restaurants. 100% recommend.
- Emily (10/5): - I had the a wonderful time at this hotel staff was so nice and helpful I would recommend staying here it’s close to a lot of things!
- Jennifer (10/5): - The hotel has beautiful architecture with historical features such as the very tall, high ceilings which makes the bedroom feel much bigger and the Juliet balcony. They also have a rooftop deck! The staff here are super friendly.
- Oscar (10/5): - I enjoyed that it was a private experience and that the staff was very welcoming. The rooftop view was nice and peaceful
- Leslie (10/5): - I loved how quiet the hotel was, everyone respected our space. I loved how friendly the staff was! They treated us so kindly and were always willing to help.
- Evelin (8/5): - I loved my stay. Charming hotel, great staff. The late checkout was a plus! However if you value hot water and soft towels this might not be the place for you.
- Aislinn (10/5): - We loved every minute of our stay at El Colonial. Because we booked through Expedia (we think?), we had access to the unlimited open bar in reception, but the main perk of that was the bartenders! Friendly, knowledgeable, interesting -- talking to the bartenders and hearing about PR was literally the highlight of our trip.
Also, wonderfully, the way the light hit our particular room meant that, in the mornings, there was a camera obscura projection of the street outside onto our roof!
100/10 (because of the staff!)
- Darlene (10/5): - Very nice!
- Tommy (8/5): Anniversary trip - We had an incredible stay and all of the staff were incredible. We typically do not leave any negative reviews, but the lady that was the night attendant when we checked in said was extremely rude and we did not feel welcomed. Other than that we loved it and would recommend!
- Jennifer (10/5): - GREAT location! Clean rooms. FANTASTIC Customer service. Would definitely stay here again.
- Alondra (10/5): - Excellent service from the staff member 100/10. Also very clean place. Amazingly located and surrounded by a lot of good places to eat and explore. It also includes a complimentary bar that includes alcohol at the lobby, that’s a super perk. I’d love my stay here and definitely we are going to visit again.
- Lizzie (10/5): - 👍
- Ana (8/5): Great location the walk up is tough w bags - Very good location . The bar in the lobby with drinks came in very handy it was a nice touch especially when coming back from walking around. The no elevator part on a 4 story walk up very large flights of stairs with bags kinda dampened the stay. When I checked in there was no one to help but another guest saved the day . When I checked out the front desk staff helped. the staff was nice mentions to the housekeeping girl with the curly hair and the young at the front desk that always wears a jacket were both very nice and the front desk staff were as accommodating and they could be and very knowledgeable. The room had a few things going on with it but the what’s app messaging helped communicate w staff and they took care of it. I would’ve loved a bit of flexibility with the check out allowing at least 1 hour later at least.
- Natasha (4/5): - El Colonial was highly rated and unfortunately we didn't have an exceptional experience. Check in was smooth and we were greeted with hospitality and a fresh cocktail. The hotel is centrally located in Old San Juan and is conveniently close to everything. The esthetics of the hotel is beautiful but we didn't like our room. Although I'm sure the room was clean, it still has a dirty appearance and it's extremely small even for two people with luggage. They charge for things like makeup on the linen and flushing tissue in the toilet. After three layovers and long day we were met with a cold shower and that was the deal breaker for us. The rooftop needs renovations. The three hot tubs on the rooftop are advertised as hot tubs but really they are bath tubs with a shower head outside and there's no hot water so it's false advertisement. We checked out after spending less than 24 hours at the hotel and went to another hotel. One thing I can say is that although no sincerity was shown for our inconveniences, we were able to get a refund for the remainder of our trip. Unfortunately, we will not return to this hotel but there's plenty of beautiful places around to stay.
- Jamie (10/5): - Front desk staff was wonderful at check in and throughout our one night stay. Open bar was also a really nice amenity. I was able to find parking for our rental car a couple of blocks away so parking was not a problem for us. I expected the family room (think it’s called deluxe) to have a little more privacy and separation based on the photos, but it wasn’t a big issue since we were only there one night. We enjoyed the rooftop sitting area as well. Overall, we would recommend this hotel and would stay here again.
