Guest Reviews
- Salih (8/5): - Great location, helpful staff, comfortable room,
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Mauricio (8/5): - Staff is very polite and professional. However, the place it has only one indoor bath and nothing really impressive but is nice for staying if you just want to rest.
- Danielle (2/5): - Had to change hotels, couldnt stay due to the mouldy room, stained everything (carpet and couch were disgusting), the entire room smelt like cigarette smoke even though we booked a non-smoking room. Staff changed rooms when we told them it was affecting our asthma, they just aired out a different room and sprayed deodorants, still smelt like smoke. Checked out an hour after checking in. Badly needs updating, cleaning and removing of odours and stains. Staff were accommodating but the hotel was not usable.
- Tsuyoshi (4/5): -
- Ping (8/5): Old buildings - The hotel is very old, like 1.5 start. It’s in front of a river with mountain view.
- Brun066 (8/5): Decent hotel, somewhat old-fashioned, but with comfortable rooms. - Before writing this review, I casually glanced at some previous reviews of the hotel, which gave a very low rating. I have no particular complaints: perhaps the hotel has been renovated since those reviews.
Of course, a service that I consider essential for a hotel is missing, such as a laundry or laundromat service; and overall the appearance of the hotel is a bit old-fashioned. But our room was large and comfortable, as was the bathroom. Breakfast was acceptable.
There is no air conditioning in the rooms, but we didn't feel the need: to have a comfortable temperature, it was enough to keep the window ajar during the night, on the side from which it is protected by a mosquito net.
- 247cyrilw (2/5): Mount View Hotel drive past if it has a vacancy sign. - The hotel is very poorly maintained. Our room was dirty. It had stained carpet, stained seating. The table felt sticky as if smokers had used the room. The curtain was torn. Toilet seat was too big for the pan. The top was a Japanese style toilet attached to a too small bottom part. We stayed four nights and there was no room cleaning. The price was way too high for the very poor condition of the room. We will never stay there again, even if it was free!
- Safari36329954342 (2/5): Very bad - Feels old and dirty, the shower was smelly and only warm water and no hot water. Stains on the carpet and sofa and everything.
We just wanted the night to be over so we can move on.
We slept in cheaper places which felt like five stars compare to this place.
- Julia (6/5): - We appeared to be the only guests in this aged hotel which though clean, was shabby and down at heel. It was warm though, and had a pair of good pingpong tables.
- Marc (6/5): - I enjoyed the abundant dinner and breakfast. many traditional foods.
staff was friendly and nice even with my lack of japanese language.
baths were run down.
property was very old - needed refurbishment in the 1980s.
compared to price of other nearby properties, the tradeoff (discount) was acceptable.
- Shuji (8/5): - Good
- Isaac (2/5): - Our hotel constantly smelled of cigarette smoke. I have stayed in a smoking room in the states and this was just like that room. Could not sleep and could not breathe.
- RMLiddle (10/5): Excellent value, comfortable - Great value, older hotel- set your expectations on the price and you'll be very happy.
Good food options, comfortable and spacious rooms- everything is old but that's ok.
Great location and stunning area
- Joethewlis (10/5): Snowboard trip - Stayed here after a day on the slopes, nice dinner, with as good selection of drinks and foods, good onsen included, and nice ping pong table games areas and even has a
Massage chair. I Would stay here again
- U9007CSjoec (10/5): Great value and location - Wonderfully clean hotel with great buffet dinner and breakfast. Really good location to access the local backcountry ski area or hiking in the summer. Friendly staff and welcome reception. This would be a great location for summer or winter.
- Pjt90 (2/5): Needs refurbishment - The twin room offered on the 5th floor stank of stale tobacco smoke. We were offered a spray of the room which we declined and eventually relocated to a room on the third floor - slightly better but rather faded & need of a major freshen up. Definitely not what you expect from japanese hotel. The onsen was acceptable as was the breakfast buffet but neither were exceptional or worthy of praise.
- 796sarahl (4/5): On its last legs - Such a disappointment, it is billed as an "Olsen hotel". We had smokers rooms and when moved we got skanky old stale smelling rooms. Scary to sit on couch and indeed others in groups got spider and bug bites. Slept with window wide open for fresh air. Onset has hot water. Buffet nothing to seek out, restaurants in town closed and or basic noodles.
To emphasize the oldness and disrepair, a pool of water had formed INSIDE the end of our hallway! ( think mold problem come summer, )
If you book here, make sure you get the " new wing" as that is what is shown in photos, if you are a smoker, enjoy this hotel.
- 390kathw (2/5): Avoid this hotel - I visited this hotel as part of a group of 11 people. The best thing that can be said is that it is well located, otherwise dreadful. The rooms we were allocated smelled of cigarettes. The response of the hotel staff was to spray them with some chemical. Eventually we were shown to another floor. Just a musty smell this time. The rooms were dirty and tired. 3 of us ended up with bed bug/spider bites, so clearly an infestation of something. The breakfast was cold and congealed. The spa was OK, but again pretty tired and dirty. The hotel feels like it is stuck in the 60s and hasn't been upgraded (cleaned) since!
- WillyTCaribbean (2/5): Avoid! - This hotel has a Great location but that’s the end of the good news. The entry hall greets you with the smell of stale tobacco smoke, so the initial impression is poor. My wife and I were on a tour with 9 others, we were shown our rooms on the 5th floor of the European wing of the hotel, everyone of us rejected the rooms because they smelled totally of stale smoke. Horrible.
The reception offered to “spray” the rooms to remove the stale smell of years, we all rejected that idea and finally non smoking rooms were made available.
Those rooms are SO tired, the place does not seem to have been updated since it was built, probably in the 60s or 70s. The carpet in our room was badly stained and all the fittings and linen were tired out.
Did not try the onsen but others who did said it was just about OK, same comment for breakfast.
To cap it all, 3 people in our group had horrible insect or spider bites at the hotel.
There are many hotels in town , use them and not this one.
- W3395PGstevef (2/5): Run down bug infested dump - Difficult to put into words how poor this hotel is.
First they tried to put us in smoking rooms when non-smoking were booked then tried to fob us off with an offer to spray the rooms to mask the stink. Eventually they agreed to put us in non-smoking rooms which revealed that the cigarette smoke was actually masking the general musty smell of the hotel. Rooms look to have last been refurbished in the 1970’s.
On the first morning one end of the 3rd floor corridor was under water from snow ingress through a leaky door - this was fixed by covering it up with towels that remained for the duration of our stay.
Breakfast was forgettable.
I have given this hotel a one star review but really they lost that when I and other members of our group woke up covered in bed bug bites.
By Japanese standards this hotel is a disgrace.
- VRHKG (8/5): Good location for the Ice Festival - Conveniently located and only a few minutes walk to the Ice Festival nearby. Dinner buffet is nice with crabs included. The Japanese style room is roomy Friendly staff at the hotel made the stay enjoyable!
- Verified traveler (6/5): One night stay - Hotel staff was all very helpful and nice. The hotel itself was a bit dated, but it worked for our group for a one night stay in the area. I didn’t get a chance to check out the onsen but heard it was nice.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- Wing Cheung (6/5):
- Sew (8/5): Autumn scenery in Hokkaido - Location of the hotel is beautiful mountains background.
- gringreen (6/5): Convenient - Chose this hotel due very close to Ropeway Station and short walk from Bus Station. Buses leaving for Ginsendai departs from here. Stayed 3nights in twin-beded Japanese room in newer wing. Seems they appoint old wing rooms for group guests only. Breakfast was buffet style. Ate just to fill tummy. Taste not yummy and more suited for Japanese guest. Seicomart is just behind the hotel and there are a few restaurants nearby though nothing taste good enough. Onsen is not worth going. Very basic and water not hot enough. Shower pressure was powerful. Room very spacious for 2 persons. We had 4 luggages. Windows can be open to let in fresh breeze. Enjoyed the dumplings and hot tea provided at lobby in the afternoon. Hair condition is not provided. There is make-up mirror with mini drawers in room.
Hair-dryer is not in room so please ask to borrow when you check in.
- Verified traveler (4/5):
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- 911anitraw (4/5): One major fault - Stayed here for 5 nights and there are some positives about this hotel. The rooms are large, although the modular bathrooms are very small. The breakfast is pretty good for a hotel at this price point. Which is really the other major positive, which is this hotel is significantly cheaper than most others in this area.
The single worst feature of this hotel is that it reeks of both fresh and stale cigarette smoke. To combat the unpleasant odour in my room I had the windows permanently open to try to dilute the smell with outside air. This was possible in May but wouldn't be in winter. If I was here for 5 night in winter it would have been unbearable. Even with flushing the room air, the cigarette smell seeped in from the hallway.
I genuinely don't understand why a hotel would do this. I get that the majority of their business is coming from Chinese tour groups, and the Chinese like to smoke. But the hotel has two wings and they could designate one of these non-smoking. Instead, the whole hotel is dominated by a smell that is more consistent with an old boarding house than a modern hotel.
- Phyllis (10/5): A great place to stay in Sounkyo Onsen - Mount View Hotel was the perfect place to stay while we explored the beauty of Sounkyo Onsen and Gorge, Daitsuzan National Park, and as a stop on our drive towards the east of Hokkaido. The front staff were helpful and spoke English. The hot spring baths were wonderful and relaxing. We did not try the buffet dinner or breakfast. We used the electric kettle to prepare food in our room. The beds were comfortable. The view from the room was of the rushing river below and the sound through the windows helped lull us to sleep. The price was reasonable. I would definitely recommend staying at the Mount View Hotel!
- Andrew_Deep_Blue (4/5): Stay here and you will regret it - Cons
I have reviewed many hotels in the past and I believe I generally have a high tolerance for below-par facilities and service. This hotel however has created a new low, especially for a Japanese hotel.
I honestly wouldn’t have reviewed this hotel had it not been for the unpleasant experience my group had during our one-night stay.
For starters, the reservation department despite noting that we travel in a party 12 were not willing to commit to seating us as a group at dinner. They also wrongly allocated some of the room keys which led to certain members of our group not obtaining their meal coupons.
To top it off the front desk duty manager that night even had the temerity of retorting that my tour guide’s Japanese is sub-standard (she’s not a Japanese by the way but thus far I do not see locals being confused by her linguistic abilities). A spirited exchange between my tour guide and the duty manager ensued.
Beyond this particular staff, overall I found the hotel staff not as cheerful as I would have expected.
In addition to the above initial bad experience are the really really dated rooms which probably haven’t seen any refurbishment in decades. The bathroom cum toilet is so small it is barely functional. The pictures speak for themselves. One thing they can’t convey though is a slight musty smell one detects when in the room.
Only one key is provided per room.
The range of food offering in the restaurant, while reasonable, really doesn’t cut it in terms of quality. The food is cold and I understand it wasn’t topped up in a timely manner due to capacity issues in the kitchen.
The breakfast offering was better than dinner's and the staff slightly more cheerful though.
Pros
Any saving grace for the hotel? If at all there is one, the hotel does provide a smart phone in each room which allows guests to make unlimited domestic and international calls as well as get unlimited internet access (their claim).
They also provide free WiFi in the rooms and lobby.
Oh and the sound of the running river right next to the hotel is soothing.
Conclusion
All in all pls avoid this hotel if possible. Stay in it at your peril. It might be old but it's definitely not charming!
- franckr730 (6/5): nice area - Nice place with large rooms. Check-in was smooth. Breakfast and dinner are good bit queuing system could be improved.
Hotel is partly smoking.
Onsen is large enough but ventilation could be improved. Real mountain view.
- Bossofnothing (2/5): Realy dirty smelly and outdated - Although this hotel gets great reviews here don't be fooled. The room we stayed in was not only run down and outdated but also really smelly. The next morning I woke up with swollen eyes from the poor cleaning in the room. Avoid this place! Better pay a little more and stay in a clean place.
- Jasmine (8/5): - Jap style room was spacious. Rice wine and steam bun served during tea break. Bed and pillow were comfortable. Near to the ice festival.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Dinner and breakfast are both good. Japanese room is comfortable for 4 to stay
- Robin (8/5): Reasonable value - Generally good value for the price. I got the impression that they were trying to provide good service but it was very difficult to communicate with them. Sounkyo is a very nice location. Excellent breakfast for 1000¥
- Verified traveler (4/5): Old and dirty hotel - Very old room. Room is dirty too. The slipper that was available in the room was not sanitized and had used plaster stick to it. Pillow case was dirty too. The kettle was not cleaned and had water in it. Just too gross.
- Tay (10/5): Onsen trip - Wonderful.
- Kah Hian (8/5): Short stay at Mount View Hotel - The hotel was very close to the bus terminal. We walked to the waterfall about 2.5 km away and back. There was no many visitors in winter time. We stayed at the hotel most of the time and the in house onset was quite interesting and we enjoyed it. My children also played table tennis to kill time. We enjoyed the hotel breakfast.
- Yerk Yee (10/5): Quiet and good location hotel - Staff very helpful, good location & can enjoy the hot spring.
- WENDY (10/5): Good location - Very near to mountain attraction
- DK (8/5): Good stay in Kamikawa - The Mount View Hotel is a good and economic hotel good for moderate budget traveller. the half board included is reasonably good though the choice was not plenty. Cannot found much Red Leave around the area in this mid Oct time.
- Ananias (2/5): Big and comfortable hotel but keep all your things - Room was big and comfortable. Heater worked well amidst the cold weather. Service was also good. Breakfast was terrible though. The only other complaint I have is that several ear-drip coffee packs (which I deliberately brought along to Hokkaido since Starbucks isn't readily available) went missing after my stay here. I believe so since I used the coffee everyday! I didn't realize it until I reached my next destination at Lake Toya!
- Manoj (6/5): - This hotel is located at best location in Kamikawa, it old hotel but view is gerat along with location. Such far away you can't expect much. Food was good and we enjoyed staying.
