Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (2/5): Schrecklich - Dreckig. Tote Gecko am Waschbecken. Sehr Laut. Kein WLAN. Kein warmes Wasser.
- Adolfo (8/5): - Buena ubicación, delicioso desayuno. Cómo recomendación más limpieza de la piscina.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Loud - Cute and clean room but shared a wall with the restaurant which had a concert up till late and it was very loud. And then the city party+ street Was super loud and kept us up all night.
Pool was super dirty. Could see the difference when we were leaving they washed it. Too bad for us.
Only continental breakfast included not what the post on hotels.com said.
Either cold water or Burning hot water in the bathroom.
Smelled like gaz in our room when we arrived we told them they went to fix it.
Staff was ok
- Maite (8/5): Un lugar para volver - Muy agradable, comodo: volveré
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Nous avons été placé dans une chambre à 300m de l’hôtel, ce n’est pas ce que à quoi nous nous attendions.
Nous avions réservé cet hôtel pour l’ambiance etc
Assez déçus...
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The small houses were very cute. The stuff was very friendly. The first A/C didn’t work, so we got another room.
The shower Is cold, sometimes there is a short time of hot water, really hot water, you can’t stay underneath that hot water, so you have to wait and take a cold shower. The light is very dark, even in the bathroom. It fits to the concept but I think it should be brighter in the bathroom.
You mustn’t take a bath in the jacuzzi, prohibited by the government. This was pretty the first thing they told us. You mustn’t advertise with a fantastic tub, when people aren’t allowed to use it. We booked the room because of the tub...additionally, everything looked a lot more worn than it appears to be on the photos.
Recommendation:
-stay as friendly and helpful as you are
-improve the lights in the bathrooms, maybe you could add one next to the mirror
-have a look at the water pipes
-don’t advertise with a tub, when it mustn’t be used
- Bernardo (4/5): - Me gustó: el restaurante, su ambientación, personal y desayuno.
No me gustó: habitación.
- Ronald (8/5): Lotus Garden - It was not bad. But no a/c. Just a fan.
No porch light. Needed a flash light.
- Chris (6/5): - Great location if you want to be in town. It was a noisy because of the downtown clubs. There was NO hot water.
- Steven (2/5): - Todo estaba mal. La habitación olía a pintura. No llegaba el wifi.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location near all beaches. The owner truly loves having people stay there!! Breakfast in the morning was nice and fresh!! The pool was great. Look up in the trees. Only thing I would recommend would be mosquito nets in every room.
- Alicia (10/5): - The staff are nice, breakfast is good, location is perfect.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - They given good price and good areas for rent. I like traveling with Expedia
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Fantastic pool, super fun management, great food, excellent location.
Would definitely visit again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Depend which room you get - great looking hotel, They have rooms with air condition which I did not use. I had a room with fan only however the windows had no screen. Despite keeping all my window closed the mosquitos and other insects got me all over. I would only recommend only if getting rooms with AC. They had WIFI however needed to delete the old wifi file every time I left the room in order to reconnect. Staff was very attentive and helpful.
- Lexie (6/5): Not what you’d expect from the description - Do not stay here if you are looking for a peaceful nights sleep. If you want quick access to the strip then it’s perfect but the clubs stay open until 5am and the music can be heard through the hotel. The rooms were big but in great need of renovation.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great if you’re here for the party - The hotel is right on the strip, and the strip is party time. If you’re going to be joining the party it’s very well placed, if you’re not it’s noisy. The rooms are quirky, pretty and rustic. There is no longer a bar or restaurant, but you can buy breakfast and the reception area has coffee and hot chocolate all day.
- Jan (10/5): - Spacious appartement with two beds and a large bathroom. The cabine was outside of the main property which means that you have to exit the fenced area (also at night times).
- Ricardo (4/5): - Smell of naphthalene
Old building
Bat on the roof
Lack of maintenance to the pool
No parking on the property
- Richard (10/5): - This place is amazing we very much enjoyed our stay the rooms were great the staff was awesome. There are two sloth living in the Courtyard very cool I would stay here every time I am in the area thank you very much
- Richard (10/5): One of my favorite hotels - This place was awesome very good staff rooms were very clean swimming pools were very nice had breakfast there and it was great staff was very very helpful you can pretty much walk anywhere you want to go. There are sloth living right on the property. The View was good I enjoyed everything about the place I highly recommend it
- Erick (10/5): - Very nice and clean. Outstanding staff.nice view. I will include a TV in the suites, other than that it was awesome.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Lovely for as long as u don’t need any assistance - Things can happen to anyone.. paid 2 nights for my niece&boybried. Everything was great until they had to ask for help to the owner of the hotel. they were left without money after another local business charged them wrong leaving them without cash ,meanwhile they asked the owner if it was possible to borough bikes, he didn’t just say no... he was nasty about it. After knowing they did not had money on them he then decided to treat them as second class citezen.. removed them from the bar where they were seating trying to solve the issue (8:00am) almost denied them a glass of water. They had a check out at 10:00 and it was 8 when the owner was already treating them badly. They didn’t even had breakfast that morning and were so ashamed by the way they were treated that decided to check out beforetime even without a shower. I can’t imagen how this man would treat you if you were stock in trouble and needed a phone call to your home country, no a way to treat your customers or anybody. Make sure if you go there you have lots of money and a plan in case something like loosing your wallet happens, what ever you do don’t let this hotel know you don’t have plenty money there with you or you are in trouble. this was the owner so no one higher to complaint to.
- Douglas (8/5): Loved Our Stay - The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had a very relaxing stay. Great location.
- Silvia (2/5): Stay away from this horrible place! - Pros: downtown location, great staff, breakfast (but not included in the rate).
Comfortable bed.
Quiet.
Cons:
Horrible room: it had a terrible naphthalene smell.
Room status overall.
Bathroom. Jacuzzi didn't work. Tube full of fungus.
Electricity outlets not working.
Expensive based on the room condition
There are more better options in the area.
Stay away from here!!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location & comfortable rooms - Room did have quite a lot of Mosquitos so I would recommend adding nets to beds. Overall the location of this hotel is great. 5 mins walk from town and 10 mins from the first beach. Staff are friendly and the pool is refreshing.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good location, rooms need a little bit of TLC, comfortable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Very close to downtown - Good price and good service from the staff. Some times the noise from outside can be listen but this is how Puerto Viejo is
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The service was amazing! All staff was so sweet, and let us leave our luggage while we searched for another place to stay. The food was very good and rooms were pretty clean. The hostel was very accommodating to our needs, and staff went out of their way to make our experience the best it could be. The pool wasn’t the best, but about a 1 minute walk from the beach, so that’s where we spent our time! It’s close to the restaurants, shopping and swimming! Overall we had a great experience!
- Gary (4/5): Pay extra money for the room with air condition. - No TV
NO air condition. Paid extra $25 eAch night. $50 for 2 nights.
Swimming pool like pond more than a pool.
Awful experience.
Claim air conditional fee $50 after back to San Francisco. It was a scheme, stealing money from ckients.
- Randall (6/5): Good location, needs improvement - CONS:
The room we were given was significantly big, 2 beds, and 1 bed upstairs, very small bathroom, needs improvement and only had 1 electric outlet.
The checkin pricess was very good, the owner is very friendly, we got there early and they were cleaning the room, so we went to the beach knowing the room will be ready when we come back, it was but the small details like no toilet paper in the room that makes you hesitant of the hotel quality.
The swimming pool defiitely needs to be reviewed, it was half full and not clean.
PRO:
It is located right in the middle of the action in Puerto Viejo, the beach is crossing the street and all restaurants, supermarket and bars are close, yet the noise at night is not a problem.
- Amy (10/5): Great stay! - Great place! The staff was all very nice and helpful. The breakfast was great, coffee very good. The mama and baby sloth were so great to see! Traveling alone I felt safe there and would definitely recommend it!
- Mike (6/5): Okay Choice - The Lotus Garden is okay and the room was fairly clean. The non air conditioned rooms have a fan and have only one outlet for charging up anything. The rooms have actual walls and windows so you are safe from mosquitoes and are close to restaurants. They have airconditioned rooms as well so it is a good choice for Puerto Viejo if you can't find another choice in the area with more preferred amenities.
- susan (8/5): very welcoming and friendly - great pool, bikes , information and relaxing, friendly, great location easy to find
- Wolfram (4/5): unpleasant experience - pushed for upgrade and gave us a room without window screens & a mosquito net for the bed. Next morning we had not only the common cockroaches on the floor but also a 4" scorpion right beside our bed. Maybe not deadly but unpleasant to have around.
- Norbell (8/5): Nice hotel very close to the beach and pet friendl - Good location as you can walk to puerto viejo beach and restaurants Very good for pets and good parking space
- Dr. Lonna (10/5): Puerto Viejo treasure - We had a huge room with a Jacuzzi, the Shogun Room. The hotel is very homey and right in the middle of town. They have their own parking and the staff was super friendly and helpful about directing us for things to do and places to eat. 2 things that were totally excellent: The super fast WiFi, delicious free coffee in the morning.
- Ronchelle (10/5): Perfect place in the middle of everything - Amazing Japanese themed hotel close to all the beaches, bars, and restaurants. Staff is very helpful and speaks English. You can also book tours close by. Sloths, frogs, and lizards frequent the garden. Breakfast is wonderful, many choices available. Room was large and terrace was beautiful, housekeeping always made the room in a timely manner. Staff held our luggage when we arrived early and you're also able to rent bikes from the hotel. Thanks to the friendly staff who helped us with our stay. Wonderful place will definitely go return!
- Bekah (8/5): Centrally Located, Great Staff - This is a simple place in the heart of Puerto Viejo. Affordable, accessible, with ample parking and roomy spaces - the Lotus Garden's staff will take excellent care of you.
- Mark (6/5): - The staff is very friendly, but the property has a few issues, like lack of hot water, and bats at night.
Perfect location, and they have a nice breakfast. Very noisy at night, until about 12 midnight. Nice swimming pool.
- Francene (6/5): Not much value for your $ - room a disappointment, no mattress cover, sheets were torn. We booked this also because of Asian Restaurant advertised, and was now something else. The food was very poor and boring...pasta "homemade" ? .. didn't seem so... would not return to this hotel, or the restaurant.
- World Traveller (4/5): Underwhelming - Just because you are in Costa Rica does not mean you want to be eaten alive by mosquitoes while in your room, awake or asleep. My room had two side doors that were folding. At the floor, there were huge gaps under the door, about 3-4 inches high and the length of two standard doors each. Anything could have crawled in and two creatures did. Also anything could have flown in an MANY mosquitos did. This was frustrating to me for my entire 4 day stay. I couldn't wait to leave. I love nature, but mosquitos buzzing in my ears at night and during the day are not my idea of relaxing.
- Rebecca (10/5): close to the beach and ammenities - The staff was excellent here, knowledgeable friendly, and accommodating. I slept excellent here and the grounds were beautiful. Great value. I would recommend to friends!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great place to stay... - It was quiet even though it was close to everything. Service was great and very friendly.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Quiet and charming near everything - Great location! So peaceful I stayed extra nights. Owner on sight, responsive staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location! - I stayed with my boyfriend for 4 nights and we loved this hotel. It's in a great location - close to town and the beaches. The room was thoroughly cleaned everyday thanks to a great staff. They were always there to help and ask if we needed anything. Great on site Japanese restaurant as well! We would definitely stay here again!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing hotel! - Stayed there 3 days. It is central and really beautiful
+many sloths
Delicious food
Super nice staff, very very helpful! !!
Nice rooms
- Amber (10/5): - We loved our stay at the Lotus Garden! We stayed in the shogun room, which was spacious, clean and comfortable. The owner was extremely pleasant and willing to help us with whatever we needed. He pointed out at least 5 different sloths in the garden during our stay, including a mama with a baby! The location was great as its walking distance to all of the restaurants, shopping, beaches and bars that Puerto Viejo has to offer. I would recommend this place to anyone. Thanks for a great stay!
- Daniel (2/5): A complete disappointment - We got there the staff were not very friendly they wouldn't give us a room with an air conditioner. One of the staff kept bothering us, knocking on the door every five minutes trying to get us to buy weed. We hated the room there were no blankets and lots of bugs. The water smelled bad, and the toilet was dirty and in a hard to reach place. To top it all off my husband said just go to sleep and we will make a plan in the morning. We were supposed to be there five nights but we left immediately the next morning because I did go to sleep and woke up with a stye in my eye on my honeymoon. This never happened to me in the States and I was devastated. We went to a nicer hotel after this back in San Jose CR and my eye infection went away with salt and hot water in a matter of hours. Stay away from this hotel. The hotel manager Jordan did give us our refund through hotels.com. The pictures are not as advertised.
- Eric (10/5): Great Hotel and Kind Management - We were on our way back to San Jose from Bocas Del Toro and decided to stop about halfway in Puerto Viejo. We were looking for a nice, affordable place and the Lotus Garden exceeded our expectations. We first got there and the manager showed us a baby sloth that was in one of their trees. He showed us our room and it was huge with high vaulted ceilings, a deck, and the bed was very comfortable. We had AC in our room and it was a nice system controlled by a remote. The internet worked in our room and it was fast. The only complaint was around 10pm the room was noisy and lizards running around on the roof, but this was not a problem for my wife or me. We spent the morning at Punta Uva snorkeling, and they allowed us to check out at noon (an hour after checkout). My wife got overheated and the manager was very hospitable and gave her Mizo soup and a charcoal tablet and she felt much better. The restaurant was good for breakfast (we did not try dinner). I wish we had more time to spend there. I would highly recommend and will plan to come back.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Comfortable and spacious room.. great jungle sounds and surf while sleeping... Staff was excellent. Sheets and towels could use an update, and maybe a seat or chair would be nice - but otherwise all was as advertised.
- angyline (8/5): Best Hospitality for a Bargain. - We spent 4 days at the Lotus Garden and thanks to Jordon, one of the owners and his helpful staff we had the best stay at this establishment in Puerto Viejo. It is in a good location, walking distance to the beach and close to down town. The room was basic and very clean. The pool is a treat after a salty dip in the sea and the landscape surrounding it and the bungalows is beautiful to relax around. We had a special happening on our trip of my friend finding her birth mother and family which we had a family gathering at the Lotus Garden restaurant. Jordon and his staff went out of their way to cater to my friends needs at the meal for everyone at this reunion. The consideration and thoughtfulness of their
professionalism of serving us will always be remembered. Definitely I would recommend the Lotus Garden to anyone looking for great hospitality for a bargain in Puerto Viejo.
- Whitney (10/5): Great stay - I stayed here with my cousin, originally booked for three nights but ended up staying an extra one. Due to some problems with delayed flights, we got there a day late, and Jordan was more than accommodating, letting us change the dates of our stay on very short notice with no extra charges. Beautiful grounds with a nice pool. We stayed in a large room with a loft and a very cool tile pattern on the ground. Only gripe is there was no a/c in our room, but they did have other rooms for a little more that had air conditioning. The restaurant there was really good, but there are also many great places to eat nearby/walking distance. Jordan gave us a few recommendations on places to eat and all were fantastic. It is a great location, in the center of town and across the street from the beach. It was pretty loud on the weekend nights. Other than that though, it was a great, central place to stay with excellent service
- Christina (2/5): Never again! - Old building with old furniture and paper thin walls. Therefore managed to sleep after 1am and woke up 5am as we could hear all the conversations perfectly.
On top bed was horrible, sleeping on the frame basically with old/broken ventilators. Shower was dirty with previous guest hair as well.
Internet wasn't working after waking up at 5. Nobody in reception to help us until... 7! What if we had any emergency??
There are plenty of places in that village to stay much better than this place. If you want your holiday to be nice, do not choose this place!
- Virginnia (8/5): Quiet in the center - The manager was very helpful..Swimming pool very small, in general good location.
- Frankie (10/5): Most Wonderful Hotel in Puerto Viejo! - The Lotus Garden is a true jem! It's about a 30 second walk from a beautiful beach and about a minute from the amazing town of Puerto Viejo(Lots of shopping and good food)! Our room at the Lotus Garden was very comfortable. We had air conditioning, a T.V. and a nice private bathroom. The pool is cool and refreshing. There was even a sloth haning out in one of the trees by the pool! He was there for our entire stay! Like our own sleepy little tree pet :-) The food is also great at their restaurant(you must try the sushi). I have many great things to say about the Lotus Garden, but the most amazing asset of this hotel is the owner Jordan, and his staff! The staff is helpful and attentive. They are some of the nicest people you will ever come by. They can help you schedule tours and massages with very little notice. Now Jordan, is great! During our stay I became quite ill with Sun Stroke, and Jordan was very knowledgable and caring. He made sure I had everything I needed and was comfortable. I can't thank him enough. He even emailed me a day after we got home to see how I was feeling. If you are looking for the best place to stay in Puerto Viejo, choose The Lotus Garden!
- taunia d (8/5): Oasis in the middle of sludge - This place was an oasis in the middle of sludge. The hotel is charming and quaint and the restaurant is really good. However, the neighbors are loud and noisy and decrepit. It's a shame this little place can't be picked up and put in a nicer place. If you are just determined to go to Puerto Viejo, this is a good place to stay.
- Renee (10/5): Loved Lotus Garden - I've stayed at many places in this small town and this hotel was one of my favorites. It's conveniently located and Jordan, our host was very helpful. Sloths and other wildlife on and near the premises was an added bonus. I loved this place and would highly recommend it.
- mike (6/5): - great location, just minutes from everything
excellent staff, especially jordan the manager and jarred great guys, very helpful
- Yvette (6/5): Ok hotel - The location of hotel was convenient. Close to restaurant and beach. Staff very welcoming. I found that the rooms were quite dark could of use more lights. We had a nice king size bed but could feel the springs of mattress. Not too comfortable. Otherwise we found the room and bathroom very large.
- Mara (10/5): Beautiful garden, big room. - Great place on the edge of town. Walk everywhere. Beautiful pool and garden, large room, giant tub, balcony, high ceilings. Loved it! Only could use more lighting, room was a bit dark, even though there were 2 bedside lamps and a hanging ceiling lamp.
- Mark (10/5): Comfort in paradise. - 1st time to southern Carribean. Jordan and staff were very helpful. Rooms are clean spacious and comfortable. We had a view of the pool and c garden from our balcony. The food at the hotel restaurant both dinner and breakfast is excellent and reasonably priced.
- Robert M. (6/5): Memorable Stay in Puerto Viejo - We stayed there for 5 days. The grounds were beautiful with a pleasant and clean pool. A family of sloths kept us amused for 2 or 3 days as they ate the leaves of a tree in the garden. The common areas were nice and wifi was good. Lighting in our room was deficient but the bed was super comfortable. We had some minor issues that Jordan dealt with quickly and efficiently. He also made useful suggestions of things to do in the area.
- Kyle (8/5): Three days in Puerto Viejo - This is a nice budget hotel near most of the action on the main street in Puerto Viejo. The room was nice, but a bit dated. Comfortable king bed, but could use some new sheets and a comforter or blanket for the colder, rainy nights. The shower was an attachment on the wall that sprayed into a jacuzzi tub and had a leak from the hose, making it hard to keep the bathroom floor dry. Nice toiletries provided. Small pool in the courtyard, but well maintained grounds. Jordan was friendly and helpful, and so were the rest of the staff.
- Verified traveler (6/5): OK but not great - The room was OK. Sheets left something to be desired as they were very thin and they were the only covers on the bed or available in the room. No other covering was on the mattress. It rained fairly hard the first night and the roof leaked in a few places including directly over one side of the bed so we rigged up an umbrella to keep it off the bed. Our second floor room overlooked the main street with the ocean somewhat visible through the trees beyond the businesses across the street which was good, but loud music started each night around 9 pm and continued to 2:00 or after which made sleeping difficult. If you're into the party scene and plan on closing down the bars this will work for you, but it didn't for us.
- Emma (10/5): Personal service good value - The hotel owner, Jordan was lovely and very accommodating. He even saved a baby sloth that had fallen out the tree! The place is close to town and shops and restaurants.
We stayed in the 'Shogun' suite & I recommend it. There is a jacuzzi bath, king 4 poster bed & two little walled gardens on either side of the room, where you can open the glass doors to floor lit plants. It feels very colonial.
On New Year's Day we were pretty tired so we ordered a big plate of sushi which Jordan kindly brought over to our room while we lazed and watched TV in the evening. What a star!
We are coming back through Puerto Viejo and are coming to stay again, we also had to stay at a much more expensive place in Puerto Viejo as it was a busy tone of year and we extended our stay and it did not compare (Hotel Agapi).
Stay at Lotus Garden! You won't regret it..
- Verified traveler (10/5): Best garden I have ever been - Saw many birds and one sloth. Very nice garden with reserve feel.
- Gez (10/5): Nice place and very helpful staff. Thanks! - Good intermediate priced stay.
- Leigh (10/5): Lovely - Everything was well taken care of. The owner, Jordan, was johnny on the spot taking care of anything for you. The gardens were lovely. The rooms were actually rather large. In ways, really hated to go...
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great deal! - Very well located, excellent personnel, roomas are basic but the whole area is, so it just fits perfectly. Couzy!
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not clean - The rooms are not being taking care of. The price isn't sootibale for what you receive. Don't recommend.
- Randi Walton (8/5): Amazing Location, Amazing Staff - I stayed in one of the standard rooms that are not particularly "luxurious," but it was just what my friend and I were looking for. We paid only as much as a "nicer" hostel and got two beds and our own bathroom. There are other rooms with a/c that were twice the price, but twice as nice. The hotel itself has a great pool area next to their restaurant. Puerto Viejo is an amazing, authentic Costa Rican town, and this hotel was in prime location. Everything was in walking distance. The owner (or perhaps General Manager) was amazingly helpful and friendly. He made the stay worth while because of his genuine care for each guest.
