The classic room we stayed in was spacious, comfortable and very clean. Perfect for a relaxing break once you have negotiated the 1.5 mile single track road to the hotel!

- Dave (10/5): Magnificent, slightly remote hotel. - Lovely place in a quite remote location. Final approach is 2 miles of very narrow twisting road. Once arrived the welcome is second to none and service is first rate. Beautiful hotel with magnificent views provided you have a room situated in the front overlooking the gardens and river. Sadly the weather was quite wet but still managed to do some walking around the extensive grounds between heavy showers. Breakfast was very good and dinner excellent with limited but interesting choices and many additional extras. We recommend this hotel very highly.

The service was fantastic, the food incredible and the hotel itself was in impeccable condition. Couldn’t fault anything the whole weekend. If I could afford to go there every year I wouldn’t have a second thought about booking it!

- Robyn (10/5): Beautiful hotel in a stunning location - Gorgeous hotel in a stunning location in the Dartmoors (Chagford is a great little town too). Staff were all very welcoming and friendly and it was an incredibly relaxing stay. The only criticism I have is very minor and is that the restaurant service was a tad slow and a bit overpriced but we still had an excellent meal. I would definitely go back again!

- Verified traveler (8/5): Beautiful place but weak wifi - Very upscale and beautiful place but lacking in some respects for such a high end lodging. For example, the wifi was quite weak despite the fact that we stayed midweek and the hotel was far from full. Also there was no one to help us with our luggage to the car when we checked out. The grounds and property were very beautiful, and our welcome was very warm, plus they upgraded our room which was very nice. Except for the man who checked us out (who was not very friendly), the rest of the service was excellent.

- Matthew (10/5): Hotel, Tasting Menu and Wine Flight - Perfect! - We stayed for one night in a superior room. The room was clean, comfortable and luxurious. Spring water, fresh apples, a bag of dates and a decanter of sherry were provided. The bed was massive. The only down side was that Hotels.com advertised the room as having a garden view but the room only had a view of a tree at the back of the hotel from the bathroom; the bedroom itself had no window. We nevertheless very much enjoyed our stay. Before dinner, we went for a walk around the grounds, which were beautiful and relaxing. We had a cup of tea on the terace and admired the view. We ate the 10 course Taster menu with accompanying wine flight in the restaurant. An expensive experience but well worth it. The wine flight really complemented the food and greatly added to the overall experience, though our heads were a little worse for wear the next day. Breakfast in the restaurant was also very good, with a good selection of freshly cooked items as well as the breakfast buffet. My wife had bacon, eggs and tomatoes, and I had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on a toasted crumpet - delicious. Breakfast service was a little slow but we were in no hurry and simply enjoyed the view from the windows. Staff at the hotel were welcoming and attentive. Overall, a lovely experience.
- ripples (10/5): Situated deep in the English countryside. - The hotel has an imposing position, almost sticking its chest out . Once inside a warm welcome awaits, both the attitude of the staff and the comfort of the surroundings make you feel this is going to be enjoyable and comfortable. The bedroom we were given was typically quintessential English with a view across the gardens where the views across the lawns streams and flowers stretched beyond to the moors. The bed was big and comfortable and adjacent bathroom had the shower wanted by everyone, large ! The food was created by a magician, like nothing I had tasted before, yes it was that good. The three course menu we choose was in fact ten by the time the chefs complimentry dishes had been had, the surprise came with coffee, and I won't spoil the surprise here. One of the best things about staying in a luxury hotel for me is the cooked breakfast, no buffet, just freshly cooked mushrooms bacon and eggs, freshly squeezed juices and berrys aplenty.

- Rachid (4/5): 500£ per night and not being able to sleep! - Background electric noise simply impossible to sleep. Raised issue with management no reaction no action. At this cost you expect much more than sleepless night! I guess they knew about the room (next to kitchen) hence the lack of reaction. Unacceptable. My wife was pleased to get home to finally get some sleep. That's not what I expected
- Ian (10/5): Fabulous Location, perfect Hotel and food/wine - We stayed one night and hosted a 70th birthday party for 10 guests. All the organisation, service, menu, food ..........and everything was just impeccable !
- Lyn (10/5): Hotel on Dartmoor - The hotel is gorgeous - the grounds, the interior, the location The only problem is that, once there, there is really no choice other than to eat in the restaurant. The food is pretentious and "cheffy". We had to search hard for the piece of lobster and it was covered in blobs of different coloured liquids, all with little taste. In order to fill up we had to ask for extra bread and a supplementary cheese plate. The haddock at breakfast was trendily undercooked and therefore lukewarm and the egg tasted of the vinegar in the poaching water. We had just spent 2 nights at Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant where the food is delicious and varied, the portions copious and there are more than 2 inches of wine in the glasses. The hotel is well worth a visit but take a picnic hamper.
- Alana (10/5): Gorgeous Gidleigh - The most beautiful hotel in the most idyllic Devon setting. We stayed on a wet and dreary February evening and we didn't even care about the weather. We played tennis in the beautiful gardens in advance of our outstanding 10 course tasting menu dinner with paired wines by Michael Wignall. The sommelier kindly typed out the wine pairings for us at our request. The wine pairings are not mentioned on the menu but for the complexity of the courses, I would recommend you opt for the wine pairing with the tasting menu. The food, the staff, the hotel was all in all, so accommodating, extremely luxurious but they went to great lengths to make it feel like it was your own house. The bedroom was divine, even the little touches in the bathroom, unobtrusive low lighting so that you could navigate to the bathroom without disturbing your partner. The complimentary Madeira was a lovely idea and the Pantry with Emma Bridgewater crockery – quintessentially English. The diffusers around the hotel maintained a consistent air of tranquility - this was definitely a place where relaxation is paramount. We were so reluctant to leave as we felt truly at home and so welcome. The setting was intimate and we often spent time in the company of the other guests who dined at the same times as us. Frederico the General Manager was present most of the time as was the F&B manager, the staff seemed to delight in being at your beck and call 24/7. Truly a magical experience and we cannot wait to return.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Not returning! - Remote location, accessed via a single lane, country road. Any attempt to tour Devon from Gidleigh, is a nervous breakdown when you drive in and out. The hotel is nice, but stuffy. Classic rooms are claustrophobic, with the bed squeezed right to the wall, with 30cm exit space. Morning room service, created such a commotion, that it inevitably wakes you up. The laundry room on the same floor, means that any staff access throughout the day makes it very noisy. Fire alarm switched on randomly further disrupting sleep. However, my main complaint is the restaurant service, simply appalling. During pre-dinner drinks, the waiter spilled a G&T all over my husband and then proceeded to mop up the table rather than him. We were of course duly charged £30 for two! Michael Caines' tasting menu (£148) was excellent, but pricey! His cook book for sale was unsigned - Amazon? Sommelier was a joke... The nicely thought-out breakfast was spoiled by (the same waiter), forgetting to order our eggs, making us wait 40mins! Next morning, eggs Benedict were overcooked and replacement only marginally better (Easter Sunday?). On the last morning, my husband ordered tea, only to be brought a jug of coffee...despair… They tried to remedy by a couple of complementary glasses of champagne on the last evening. We will not be returning!
