Guest Reviews
- Jaco (4/5): Disappointingly overpriced! Will not book with them again. - View of the mountain Overpriced.
Basic meals and drinks charged at nearly x4 the price.
Staff is inexperienced and does not know what hospitality is.
- Heleanna (8/5): Waking up to Kilimanjaro - We loved the view, the design of the Rooms and the lush garden, as well as the services of guiding they are offering. Food offerings are good, but pitty we could not taste local food well done and served in the premises Door to the bathroom noisy and not fully closing, and the restaurant ergonomics a bit complex.

- Alex (8/5): - Kaliwa lodge is 1hr from airport & Mt Kili walking points. You must arrange transport with lodge to go anywhere as the lodge is very isolated. Located amongst banana plantation down a very bumpy dirt road. Lodge is surrounded by walls and is secure. The lodge has a garden courtyard with rooms around yard. Large deck overlooking a green valley and Mt Kilimanjaro.
Room & ensuite is functional with adequate space. Dated modern decor, large netted comfy bed, good hot water & WiFi. Dinner was good & had breakfast box. Staff are great.
Birds at night & early morning can be a nuisance for light sleepers. Dinner & drinks at reasonable prices.
- Alex (10/5): - This was a wonderful zen stop for us in Kilimanjaro. The staff treated us like family and the food and drinks were amazing.
- Jens (10/5): - Super Betreuung durch zuvorkommendes, freundliches Personal. Tolle Anlage mit Blick auf den Kilimanjaro. Zahlung mit Kreditkarte ist nicht möglich.
- Eugene (10/5): Hidden gem - Phenomenal
- Hailey (9/5): -
- Benedicta (9/5): - The terrace with the mt Kilimanjaro view.
- Emily (9/5): Super Tolle Unterkunft! Super leckeres Essen & nettes Personal. Tolle Tour!
- James (10/5): Great views and food!! - Views, food (food is so great!!) and staff are super. Room was also very comfortable. Nothing major. All round a really good spot.
- Mehdi (9/5): Perfect stay before/after Kilimanjaro climb - Perfect stay in & out!
The lodge is so connected to the it’s surrounding nature and forest giving you a feeling you won’t forget.
The staff made this stay extremely pleasant!
Even though it got pretty cold, the staff were agile to get me wood for the fire chimney.
They were extremely flexible with my checkin check out times.
They stored my bag before I left for the mountain and gave it back to me when I got back.
I highly recommend this lodge. The normal room have windows that don’t close, therefore it got super cold and no heating was available the room.
However, after complaining to the staff, they were extremely helpful and upgraded me to the bigger room at no extra charges!
If the weather is good, I will 100% go back here!
- Corey (10/5): -
- Edoardo (10/5): Exceptional - Loved everything about this place, we'll definitely be back! :)

Loved my dinner and breakfast was so nice .
I wish I had booked for more days,,,,,,,I would highly recommend this place and I would definitely stay here if I come back to Tanzania. Nothing,,,,, all was perfect.
- Pierre (10/5): An excellent choice - Loved the design and the view terrace gazing at Kilimanjaro.
Great staff, Thanks Mkime for all the cappuccinos.
Well deserving of the high reviews.
- Brandon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daria (10/5): If you go to Kili Machame route it’s a must location!!!! - Everything absolutely!!!
- Amany (9/5): Exceptional - The outdoor area is amazing, the room is exceptional and the staff are great I disliked the food so much, the breakfast was great tho and coffee is great
- Melanie (10/5): - Amazing view from the deck, great service and rooms have everything you need
- John (10/5): Exceptional - Managed with care and attention to detail. Fantastic service. Beautifully decorated and peaceful outdoor areas with great views. It is some distance from Moshi and private transport is expensive.
- Tabitha (8/5): Beautiful but not a comfortable sleep! - Lovely space and great staff. The room had no ventilation, the bed was extremely hard, not enough hooks in the bathroom to put wet towels, storage space in the shower to put the shampoo and body wash, and not enough counter space for toiletries. The breakfast was excellent and the coffee was delicious.
- Panuya (10/5): Exceptional - This place is lovely! I stayed before and after my kilimanjaro climb. When I came the second time, the staff remembered my name and welcomed. They even gave me an upgrade to one of the lofts. Wow. This was amazing. The view from the balcony is just stunning.
Breakfast and Dinner were also amazing.
Highly recommend to stay here!
- Ignacio (10/5): Magical stay - Our honeymoon stay at the hotel in Moshi was absolutely magical. We were upgraded to the best room available and the staff went above and beyond to make our stay unforgettable. From separate romantic dinners to a bed decorated with flowers and a complimentary bottle of champagne, every detail was taken care of to ensure our experience was truly special. We highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a romantic getaway in Moshi.
- Elif (10/5): Exceptional - amazing staff, beautiful property. We loved the location. the terrace is breathtaking. We want to go back and get a room with a view.
- Rüfli (6/5): Pleasant - Lovely garden. Nice patio with views of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Nice breakfast. The staff was overly friendly. It didn't feel sincere at all. Even though a lovely accomodation we didn't feel very welcome.
- Enno (10/5): Exceptional -
- Johanna (9/5): Most wonderful place. Highly recommend - Beautiful gardens, beautiful location. Delicious food. Fantastic staff Nothing not to like. Except perhaps a fan or ac in the room
- Dan (10/5): An oasis of calm on the slopes of Kilamanjaro - The view is divine, the staff are attentive and the garden feels like a sea of tranquility away from the chaos of Moshi centre Nothing
- Wolfgang (10/5): Exceptional -
- Roman (7/5): best view ever 😁 - location - view of Mt. Kilimanjaro, in the middle od the forest, food was ok when we came to the property there was no power, no internet or very weak, failure, we got a room next to the power generator so we asked to move us, they partiáy solved the problem, because it was just a room few meters further
Merci beaucoup
- Marine (10/5): Exceptional - The staff attention, the beautiful view Nothing

Extraordinary position
Nice view to kili Diner was overprized
- Anonymous (3/5): Poor -
- Neringa (10/5): Exceptional - Thes staff, food and place were amzing. Could not expect more.
- Allison (10/5): peaceful and quiet - beautiful location- a little oasis out of the madness of Arusha. we couldn’t pay by card even though it was advertised you could.
- James (10/5): amazing location - view, modern rooms. check out
- Rahil (7/5): Not what you see - Kilimanjaro mount view
Cleanliness
Staff No Safebox in Room
Remote location far from town
Power Cuts
No AC
No landlines in room
Not at all advisable for family stay
Room are small with little privacy because glass doors.
- Neringa (10/5): simply amazing - Loved everything about that place , the view of Mount Kili was stunning .
Was amazed by customer service , Justina and her team is truly amazing!
Will definitely come back next time . n/a
- Christine (10/5): - The Mt. Kilimanjaro viewing deck was my favorite.
- Seciliq (3/5): Poor - Friendly staff and it's out in nature The shower was small with no shower curtain, so the water was just running off to the bed I couldn't shower comfortably. The bathroom window curtain was too small I picked up someone peeping into my bathroom from the forest . The wifi didn't work and there wasn't enough space to put my luggage. The bed was also very small and for a price of 100 USD a night for me it's not value for money.
- Romik (10/5): Great accommodation, like home - thanks to the hotel for everything. location is terrific. also want to thank Justina and Lina for their kind and friendly atmosphere! I do recommend this place, you will not regret!
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lucie (10/5): Exceptional -
(9/5): Superb -
- Melissa (10/5): - We enjoyed our stay at Kaliwa. The staff members were lovely--the people were the highlight of our stay. The rooms are practical but tastefully decorated, very clean, and pleasant.
I'm very grateful that the Kaliwa team was accommodating when we realized that my father's CPAP breathing machine would need overnight electricity. Their quick thinking was very appreciated.
The food was very nice and we enjoyed our stay very much.
- Hendrikus (8/5): Very good - Stunning deck with views on Kili. interesting little oasis with eyecatching architecture in a quaint environment. Friendly staff and comfortable rooms. For the price, the amenities were a bit lacking (e.g. a pool, even a small one, would really have uplifted the experience. Restaurant atmosphere a bit lacking and though the food was good, again pricey (as was the 50 USD taxi to JRO airport).
- Anonymous (10/5): Amazing! - everyone is incredibly friendly, the food is amazing, the rooms so comfortable and the view of kilimanjaro is just stunning!!!
- Fryderyk (9/5): Superb -
- Erik (10/5): Nice stay near kilimanjaro - We enjoyed very much our stay at this property. Very warm welcome, great service. The breakfast with the view on the kilimanjaro is spectacular.
The only negative point was that credit card machine didn't worked and we had to pay in cash.
- KAREN (6/5): kaliwa - facilities are okay. periodically lost electricity and hot water. the staff are wondferful, however.
- Verified traveler (10/5): kilimanjaro - Beautiful views of Kilimanjaro from deck !!
- Juuso (10/5): Unforgettable stay - I want to thank Inger, Marvin and all of the Kaliwa Lodge staff for an incredible stay at the foot of Kilimanjaro. Not only is the place unique and astonishingly beautiful, you feel most welcome and all of the staff is always ready to help you and even share personal stories and local info when you're eating or hanging around in the lobby.
An added plus for the lunch and dinner menus, not once did I taste even anything mediocre, was really surprised the high quality of the food, better than in most good restaurants in Tanzania or Kenya - special mentions to the chicken curry and the spaghetti arrabiatta.
The place is a bit out of town but the experience is more than worth it. And you never forget the moment when you see Kilimanjaro in the morning sun for the first time from the hotel terrace. I would rate Kaliwa Lodge as a top 5 stay in all of my travels.

- Richard (10/5): - The lodge is really great. It was our best stay on our Tanzania Trip. The German Managers are very nice and helpfull. They have great terrace with view to the top of the kilimanjaro and a nice garden. We also did the "machame walk" which you can book there. It was a very nice half day trip. We whould defenetely recommend to stay there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great little place, breathtaking views, friendly staff
- Johanna (10/5): We warnt to come again - It was very beautiful. Very kindly staff
- Nicolas (10/5): - Amazing place ! Amazing staff ! All good
- kl (6/5): - good hotel. but it is expensive.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It is in a unique location, very quiet and peaceful. The deck is very nice.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The view of Kilimanjaro was great. Did see it but is very weather dependent. Staff were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble!
- Michelle (10/5): Excellent Hospitality - Kaliwa Lodge provided an exceptional experience with outstanding views of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The managers and staff were friendly and helpful at all times. In addition to clean rooms, the freshly prepared meals and tranquil surroundings were delightful. The lodge can also arrange excursions with a local guide. I hiked to Machame Camp one day and participated in a village tour/coffee roasting experience on another, both with local guide Edimund. Thank you for a delightful stay.
- Michelle (10/5): Fabulous hospitality - Kaliwa Lodge provides excellent accommodations and hospitality for a short trip to the area. The staff are friendly and helpful, rooms are kept well, and the food is delicious. This would be a perfect place to stay before or after hiking Kilimanjaro, and there are views of the mountain for all guests to enjoy.
- Juan (8/5): Loads of potential in a beautiful setting - The manager is SUPER personable which is great in such a small property. The setting is amazing despite the fact that the Kili was cover by clouds the whole time. However there’s some investment the property could make to offer more comfort to its guests. Hopefully with new management these improvements will take place. I will invest in good pillows, the ones provided were awful. The beds have the set up for the mosquito nets but they weren’t used. They should because we were bitten by mozzies. Having to pay only in cash is cumbersome. The property in general could be better maintained and little touches to make it more welcoming.
- Sol (6/5): - This lodge is 15 km to Mt. Kilimanjaro and 45 min. from Kilimanjaro airport. Only accepts cash. The property mangers are friendly. For the price you pay, the room and bathroom is very tiny. Some of the customers rating is very high on this facilty. For the price that’s being charged you would expect to get lot more. You can get taxi at airport which is lot cheaper than asking the lodge to arrange and the same for the tours.
The viewing deck is nice but the 2 days we their was foggy so you couldn’t see the mountain peak.
- Earl (8/5): - A little rustic but an excellent view and great staff.
- Dominic (8/5): Comfortable clean minimalist - Rainy day but sunny staff. Well organised, polite and efficient. Lovely look out over the valley to the mountains behind. Clean simple rooms.
- KEVIN (10/5): Excellent location and management - Efficient and friendly management at a great location.
- Donna (10/5): Serene location with views of Kilimanjaro - This place seemed nice when reading about it online, but I wasn’t prepared for how truly exceptional it is. Unpretentious, but comfortable lodge that lets the surroundings have center stage. Magnificent deck with views of Kilimanjaro (which was gracious enough to show itself). Excellent breakfast in serene surroundings. Warm and welcoming hosts. I would love to come back here!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Fab hotel nestled in foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro - Couldn't have been happier with our two night stay here at Kaliwa.
Thomas and the team run a tight ship and the 9 beautifully appointed rooms are a great place to acclimatise pre ascent of Kilimanjaro (or pre safari - in our case).
The food (breakfast lunch and dinner), room, gardens, staff and sun deck were all fabulous. We spent 48 hours lying around drinking in the views and the sights and squeezed in a day trip to Moshi.
Will definitely be back.
- Doug and Monika (10/5): Great Three Days At Kaliwa - Our three day stay at Kaliwa Lodge was most enjoyable. The lodge is beautifully situated with wonderful views of Mount Kilimajaro from a fabulous deck overlooking a lush green valley with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. The gardens and landscaping around the bauhaus designed guest rooms were beautiful. Blue monkeys were swinging through the trees nearby on a regular basis and the bird life was superb.
The staff was effective, courteous and friendly and Thomas the General Manager was a terrific host ensuring that every need was well attended too. Thomas was also an immense fountain of knowledge and insightful observations on Tanzania; it's history; it's people, their successes and their prospects and challenges and for the future. It was like having your own personal tour guide on site all the time.
The lodge is not to big, so meeting and interacting with other travelers at meals and on the deck made the experience even more enjoyable.
- Kris (10/5): Perfect hotel for climbing Kilimanjaro - The manager of the hotel, Thomas Becker, is an incredible host. He was very accommodating, and made my stay in Tanzania seamless. The staff at Kaliwa lodge is very nice, and the area is very relaxing. It's the perfect place to stay before and after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
- Andrew (10/5): The best view & quality lodging on Kilimanjaro!!! - My new wife & I just were married here last week! Through a lucky search online, I found this gem in Machame that had everything I was looking for a stay & ceremony ! When I read it was German owned & German Managed, I knew it would be wonderfully run with attention to detail as having lived in Germany for 5 years.
The set daily 3 course menus, the beautifully maintained grounds & flowers, the AMAZING wood deck with a view of Kilimanjaro (when she isn’t shy behind clouds) with a full compliment of drinks & made to order snacks / light meals for lunch. Between the email contact, the assistance with the wedding coordinator & the great photos Thomas himself took of us being married , we couldn’t have asked for a better view, better host , better staff for the few days we stayed for our little “private” ceremony.
The ONLY downside - it’s cash only there for meals / drinks / Extras. That in Tanzania is a problem as a tourist, with the only reliable ATM being 45 mins drive away by paid taxi and would mean taking millions out to pay the total bills. BOOK the rooms online to pay first , bring plenty of cash with you & more for tips / extras / taxi. It’s on an area of unreliable network & limited internet, so only relaxing or some short hikes are possible...great for a few days rest / before or after hiking Kili or a quiet get away.
I love the cool evenings, but having a Fan (which isn’t possible there without full time electricity) would be a small bonus.
- Julie (8/5): Pretty place in the neighborhood - It's a beautiful place. Simple and elegant. The people were lovely. There was no internet and this caused us enormous problems because we had some travel issues, including a flight change and no one could reach us via What'sApp or email. I spent a fortune on phone calls while there. Also we received no maid service, they didn't even empty the trash can. Overall we thought it was a nice place but bad luck having no internet. They should have offered a discount.
- Dave (8/5): Great Tanzania Lodge - Excellent property, beautiful grounds and very helpful management.
- Glenn (10/5): Great Stay beside Kilimanjaro - Great place to stay. Cool outdoor restaurant & bar; nice local walks and activities; fun watching monkeys.
Recommended place to stay while getting ready for Kilimanjaro climb.
However don't expect all the room amenities to function - my TV didn't have a cord to plug inand some stuff didn't work...
- miriam (10/5): - Staying at kaliwa lodge was a great way to relax and take in the surrounding nature. The breakfast in the morning was phenomenal.
- Bitna (8/5): Charming place - the place was so charming and cozy. African atmosphere lingered around the lodge. It was unfortunate that the weather was too foggy to see the Kilimanjaro mountain, but still I fall in love with the place.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I highly recommend this hotel if you are staying around the area. The view of Kilimanjaro from the deck is priceless! Wonderful view, we were lucky the weather and clouds cooperated with us that we had a magnificent view! Not so keen on the room so much. Pretty basic and a bit of smell, but it is ok. Staff were great and friendly. Food was delicious. So happy with this hotel overall!
- Andi (10/5): Loved it! - Beautiful location, great food and friendly service.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Bauhaus boutique design hotel - Refreshingly different design. Impressive coffe table book library on Africa.
- Julia (10/5): Great Spot - We had a great time at the hotel! Everyone was extremely attentive and accommodating even though we arrived late. The breakfast was a delicious assortment of coffee, teas, homemade bread, cheeses, and fresh fruit. The grounds were clean and we really enjoyed the amazing views of Kilimanjaro from their deck. Highly recommended. Thank you!
- Jeff (10/5): 4 day stay after Kilimanjaro - Thomas & his staff really go out of their way to make you feel comfortable & catered for. I travel extensively & it's great to find customer care at this very high level. Views for the terrace & gardens are breathtaking & organised tours from Thomas are well worth a try.
I'd not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone.
Jeff..
- Zachary (8/5): Quaint and Charming Lodge with Beautiful Views - The room was nice. The beds were very stiff and the sheets were a bit scratchy. The main reason you stay at this lodge is for it's charm. Since the lodge is very secluded bordering the jungle area, you will have many animals making noises at all times of the day. You have beautiful views of Kilimanjaro not only from the viewing deck but from the breakfast/dinner area. Dinner was not included in our price but was very good, surpassing our expectations. The couple who run it are very nice and are eager to help you arrange any activities or transfers you may need.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A very relaxing and comfortable small hotel. A good place to recover from a hectic travel schedule. The meals were of a fixed menu and very flavorful.
