- CH Chen (10/5): Great place to stay. - Friendly lady staff and great kitchen. Everything a backpacker needs. Nothing to complain about.

- Teresa (9/5): - Nice place for a few days. Good location! It's so good that there are so many people haha

- Rachelle (4/5): Stay elsewhere if you want to sleep - The location is lovely. The lockers in the dorm were spacious and nice. It was nice to be provided with I know it’s not the property’s fault, but what is with roommates thinking it’s appropriate to shower every morning in the dorm room bathroom at 3 to 4 am? (If you’re a lady, I wouldn’t recommend staying in the female-only dorm with private bathroom for this reason.) The kitchen was often dirty, guests don’t clean up after themselves, and space in the fridges was very limited for the amount of guests. The showers were mouldy. And the vibe of the place was like an extended version of high school with cliques and drama. I know that’s not necessarily the responsibility of the hostel and staff, but it’s the kind of vibe the hostel attracts.
- YOO CHANG (10/5): Thank you for helping me to check in late night. Highly recommended this place. - I was not able to get accommodation right time. Thankfully, kind staff member understood my situation and helped me to have late check in.
I really appreciate that night waitng for me to check in.
I could have really nice rest and kept going to next journey from there.
Thank you.
I cannot foget your kindness. Staff member was very nice and kind.
Highly recommended. None.
- Bridgette (4/5): There are other better hostels in the area - It is in a good location, close to the beach It is a very small hostel, quite run down and not very clean. The staff were also not very friendly. Just not a b ru good vibe in this hostel
- Lisa (7/5): A decent enough place. Nice area of Melbourne. - It was decent enough. My dorm room had a bathroom inside which was very convenient. The kitchen was quite cramped.

- john (8/5): Great spot. Close to beach shopping, sights and night life. 👍👍👍 - Lovely staff there. Always welcome you with a smile and very helpful. Lovely vibe in the place and a great set up to socialise with eachother. ❤️
- Ririko (8/5): -
- Karl (10/5): -
- Gabriela (6/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff
Great rooftop and environment Kitchen and bathrooms could use with some tiding and renovation
- Sophie (7/5): Reminded me of my student days! - The good things about this hostel were the staff, location, the fact you get a free locker in the room to safely store things and the roof top. This place is best suited to young travellers who are looking to make new friends and hang out. There’s a friendly, chatty vibe that makes it easy to connect with others which is really nice. The biggest issue with this place is that it is so hard for the staff to keep on top of the 24 hour kitchen (not their fault), mainly due to inconsiderate guests leaving crumbs everywhere and not drying and putting away their dishes!
- Timothy (10/5): -
- Thi Thu Trang (8/5): - Easy to go to the beach
- Kate (7/5): Really pleasant experience overall, suited my needs. Staff were lovely as were the other travellers - Climbing up all the stairs at 5 in the morning was a bit rough
And the doona wasn’t clean
- Xue (10/5): -
- Pau (6/5): - Location Old people living in the hostel, staff not very helpful with surrounding indications or doubts, filthy kitchen
- Randa (4/5): -
- Pau (2/5): - Different price when I booked and when I had to pay in the hostel reception.

- Mohama (9/5): amazing value - that there were nice lockers. I also really liked how I didn't see any bugs or anything like that during my stay. The showers were surprisingly good. I didn't like how hot the rooms were. the beds were fine, but could have been a bit more comfortable. complementary shampoo and body wash would also be nice.
- Joannou (8/5): - Ppl are warm and very welcoming The weather 😂🤣😂 l can't complain about Barkly the staff are nice and Management is good
- Priyadarshan (10/5): -

- Darian (10/5): - The receptionist who greeted us was sweet and very thoughtful; she moved us to a closer room to accommodate our many bags without us asking. The place was really tidy, and the beds were very comfortable. There's free towels and affordable laundry in the building. Seems like a place where they put the backpacker first and truly try to make it an enjoyable experience. If you're staying in the winter, it's a bit chilly, but other than that, no complaints
- Vendula (7/5): -
- Soracha (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sami (8/5): Very good - Easy access via public transport or own car. Friendly and helpful staff. Had got a bit of a style.
- Soraia (8/5): overall good for a short stay 👍 - St. Kilda location, amazing staff, big kitchen, hot water, free car parking on the Main Street. Cold and stuffy room, the kitchen stove could be more clean, I spent 1h30 minutes on trying to find a free parking.
- Mohammad (5/5): Passable -
- M (1/5): Unfriendly staff - smelly room- outside corridors & over 35 yr olds not allowed - On main road. Short walk to tram into city. Receptionist unfriendly, bored and not at all welcoming. She seemed to resent my disturbing her and her intro was rushed and desultory. I used booking.com app on phone with no probs and read ALL the details fully. When I arrived was told hostel was only for under 35 yr olds - nowhere had this been mentioned. On booking out asked proprietor to show me where on app this was stated - he couldn’t! Corridor and stairs to room had either no walls or no ceiling - fortunately it was mot raining at the time. Room had no windows that opened and in spite of the 2 guests being pleasant it smelt strongly of unwashed clothing due to lack of ventilation. There are good hostels in Melbourne - so avoid this one!
- Hamish (8/5): Very good -
- John (10/5): Clean, fun, social and rooms quiet for sleep. Great place with great staff - Nice friendly place. Staff were lovely and very helpful. Clean, quiet, and location is great. Highly recommend this place. Have nothing I disliked at all.
- Amber (6/5): Pleasant - It has a homely feel. Staff are really lovely. Rooftop terrace. The location is rubbish. It could be a lot cleaner.
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional - Great: people, rooftop, volunteers, owners, vibe, chill area, location etc. You can tell the hostel cares as well which I didn't find in the other hostels in Melbourne. No curtains on the bed, but long term you can get a bottom bunk and put your own sheets up. Short term and it's not a big deal.
- Nathan (7/5): Good -
- Daveena (8/5): Good stay for what I wanted - Great for socialising, excellent location. The owner and female staff super friendly, Nice space in the dorms. Good bathroom and hot water. Good fridge space and nice to be able to cook. The kitchen and living area feels bit dirty and messy. Beds so creaky, no curtains. Living area doesn’t look as good as the photos but generally is alright. Feels like there’s too many people in the hostel and not enough space to sit in the shared areas in the eve.
- Rum5 (7/5): Good -
- Nevil (4/5): Disappointing -
- Ramsay (10/5): Nice - Location
The culture Nothing
- Katie (9/5): pleasant stay with a good vibe - good location, nice staff, good facilities could have had cleaner and more comfortable pillows and bedding
- Sebastian (7/5): Good - Cool ambience
- Bryan (8/5): Very good -
- Enya (10/5): Exceptional - Like a little family. Especially great for long term stays
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jo (3/5): Ehhh - The staff was friendly It felt cramped and uncomfortable but it was on a Saturday and all the girls besides a couple of were drinking in the room and getting ready to go out... it was like a bomb went off in there. It seemed like a very young crowd that day. It was messy. It was hot and stuffy and I didn't have any convenient spot to plug my things to charge. The kitchen was pretty dirty when I happened upon it also. I wouldn't go back unfortunately....
- Winkler (10/5): Exceptional - Had multiple stays (short and longterm) in Barkly Backpackers and would recommended to everyone else who is looking for a nice, affordable and familiar hostel in Melbourne.
- Chuan (8/5): Very good -
- Chulaka (2/5): Very poor - There was a queue for the bathroom/toilet every floor. Ridiculous 😔 Cleanliness, setup
- Arkadiusz (8/5): Very good -
- Ilaria (10/5): Exceptional - The environment, it looks like being part of a big family. And Julieta, the receptionist, is fantastic!
- Szymon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (10/5): Amazing - Great staff, and really comforting felt like a home.
- Ahmed (9/5): Superb -
- Kamila (10/5): Exceptional - Girls at the reception were super welcoming, happy to help with any inquiries, friendly and always smiling. Nice and clean rooms with private lockers for valuable belongings, clean and well equipped kitchen. Plenty of food from previous backpackers like herbs, sauces, oil for shared use. Good and free wifi. Nice rooftop and overall cool, chilled and community vibe. Nice music playing in the lounge, lots of board games and equipment for free to use.
- Misha (7/5): Good -
- Chichi (1/5): Bad -
- Danai (10/5): Exceptional - The vibe and staff were really good. Clean rooms and toilets They need a few more bathrooms
- Ahmed (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent,as usual and inspiring!!! Thanks

- Charleen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Charlotte (10/5): Great stay, would highly recommend! - Very good facilities, including an oven in the kitchen which is not common within hostels that I’ve stayed at previously. Clean rooms and bathrooms. This is a smaller hostel so it’s a great option for people that work.
- Riku (8/5): Very good -
- Ruchit (1/5): Bad - It was really disappointing and really dirty and unhygienic place It was really disappointing and really dirty and unhygienic place
- Wallis (10/5): Exceptional - It was really chill and had a at home kind of vibe. And super helpful and friendly staff
- Aakash (7/5): Good -

- Bailey (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jones (9/5): Superb -
- Evangeline (7/5): Friend and nice staffs! Cozy living room nd fun activities. - Quiet.
Staffs are nice.
Public computer for using. Not many shower rooms.
A bit far to walk to the tram.
Kitchen is not very tidy especially the sandwich presser. Recycle bin is not obvious.
- Pru (8/5): Very good -
- Jodica (8/5): Very good -
- Trevilly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Davide (10/5): Exceptional - Location, staff, common areas small but cozy as living room :)
- Chad (8/5): It was great -
- Justine (2/5): Very poor -
- Diego (8/5): Very good -
- Giorgia (10/5): Friendly staff and cozy hostel - Cozy hostel, and very friendly staff. Overall clean and comfy. Great location in magica San Kilda. All good!
- Darian (9/5): Superb - The common areas aren't huge, but they are very cozy. They felt very much like a real home.
There is, however, a huge rooftop area with plenty of seating.
I stayed in the all girls dorm. Plenty of lockers and space for everyone, and the bed was comfortable.
Staff was super friendly and helpful.
The hostel was pretty clean. No grime on the shower floors.
Free parking nearby after 5 pm (2P 9 to 5). The Care Park is about a 10-minute walk and is only $8 all day if you park before 10 am. Not enough outlets in the room.
- Jorge (8/5): Good enough for a couple of days - The location and the amenities The building needs a bit of maintenance. The bedsheets, pillows and bedding were dirty and with weird strains
- Wilfried (6/5): OK place, nothing bad. - Relaxed atmosphere, good location. Just another hostel.
- Emily (7/5): A friendly hostel in a convenient location - The staff were very friendly and helpful. I was in a girls dorm and the atmosphere was very welcoming. I ended up speaking to a few of the girls and most people said hi when passing. They had a free rooftop barbecue when I was there and it was very good. The food was good and it was free which was very nice of the staff to do for us. Communal area had lots of power sockets available.
It was in a good location just a short walk to the beach, Luna park and acland street. Lots of places close by for food and things to do. Felt a little messy sometimes. Lots of random people's stuff all over the room (especially long term residents) and common areas. My bed didn't have access to a plug and the large window behind it was often fully open which made me worry about stuff falling off my bed and out the window. There was also a smell of gas that wafted in through the window constantly. The communal area often had music playing especially on weekends and nights which made it hard to find anywhere to have a quiet phone call in the evening.
Didn't realise that the hostel is on the 1st floor so had to drag my suitcase up a big flight of stairs.
