Guest Reviews
- Alexandre (8/5): - extrêmement bien situé. personnel gentil.
- Joshua (10/5): - The public bath is SO NICE. The traditional accommodation is also a nice departure from the typical hotel stay, highly recommend
- JOSEE (10/5): - Ryokan fidèle à sa définition. Charmant.
- Antti (8/5): - It was a great experience staying in a traditional ryokan, visit an onsen (public bath) and use a yukata (Japanese robe). Lovely staff, great location and spacious and clean room. A futon mattress would have made the experience even better, but the down duvet was wonderful.
- Corey (8/5): Overall good stay. - The service staff was good, except on the day of checkout when they were very insistent that we checked out before the 10 am checkout time, even though I kept explaining that I had my children and wife still in the room while I returned my rental car. They almost made me late returning my car by having me explain my whole itinerary to them that morning.
- IRIS (10/5): - This is a small hotel with limited hotel rooms. Some rooms need to shared bath. We stayed in a Japanese style room with a private bath. The room is not fancy but clean and confortable.
The hotel is walkable distance to most of the attractions, only 2 min walk to Shokyo bridge, 15 mins walk to Toshogu Shrine, and 18 mins walk to Tobu-Nikko train station. The Heritage shuttle bus stop 7 is right in front of the hotel.
- Christian (10/5): Amazing staff - Amazing staff and conveniently located. Best option in Nikko. Close to all major tourist points.
- woojinlin (10/5): Perfectly located almost in front of the bridge - Very nice Japanese style room with a tiny bathroom, but with a large shared sento. Very close to the holy bridge of Nikko! The hotel was very quiet, and very comfortable.
We didn't book the breakfast, so not sure how it looks like. But we highly recommend, notably for the very welcoming staff.
- Toshinobu (10/5): - It was a great location. Stuff was very accommodating and friendly.
- Michael (10/5): A well located ryokan close to Nikko-Tosho-gu. - Nikko Tokino Yuu was a convenient hotel for an overnight visit to Nikko to see the shrine and tomb of Tokagawa Ieyasu at Nikko-Tosho-gu.
with simple Ryokan style rooms and a modest basement onsen, this was a comfortable hotel for a night.
- Mohd Khairul (6/5): - Limited facilities
- Alexander (10/5): - Perfect for expiernece a classic japanese sleep in futons.
The service was excellent. Will definitly come again!
- Janelle (10/5): - Customer service was excellent. We were greeted by friendly staff. Instructions for room and onsen were helpful and informative. Location is great. We arrived in the evening and it was nice to see the building lit up and easy to find. I would highly recommend this stay.
- PAUL (8/5): - Staff was GREAT! Older hotel could use a few updates. Staff kindness makes up for oldness.
- Ruohan (10/5): Perfect place in Nikko - We really enjoyed our stay at Nikko Tokino Yuu. The room was spotless, roomy and decently equipped. The service was really friendly and helpful even if we do not speak Japanese very well. I especially loved the large public bath. It was quiet and well-maintained, and had a view of a small garden. When I was enjoying a bath there, it started to rain lightly. I could smell the rain and see the plants get a little wet - it was the best feeling ever.
If we were ever back in Nikko, we would come back to this place!
- Rodney G (10/5): - Excellent property, excellent location and exceptionally professional staff. I highly recommend the city of Nikko as well as the perfectly managed hotel.
- Sharon (10/5): - Although the facility is not the type of ryokan that provides an option for half-board, the facility is spotless, including the room, bedding, bathroom, and public onsen. They have strict COVID measurement procedures, which made us feel safe and comfortable! The manager lady who heard us going out to the bar and they checked on us for transportation which we didn’t ask for; they cared for their clients. We feel warm-hearted. Thank you for such comfortable and cleanliness of the facility for us to stay!
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- dougo718 (10/5): Gem close to major Nikko landmarks - The location was excellent for easy access to the very popular major shrines and other landmarks of Nikko. Excellent service and staff friendliness but with fairly limited English (not a major obstacle). We stayed in a traditional room with futon that we set out and put away by ourselves. AMAAZZING comforters. Excellent recommendations for food and sightseeing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good location and comfortable ryokan, good size public onsen
- Ruby (8/5): - Location is good.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The whole hotel was clean and the staff were amazing! There were English explanations for everything and the staff spoke some English.
They had lots of facilities, including coffee/tea machines and an amazing sento bath! I would highly recommend staying here!
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- moumou199 (8/5): Location, location, location! - This is a great base to see the bridge and historical sites in Nikko National Park. We didn't get to see all the shrines on our first day, so, we started sightseeing early the next day to avoid the crowd. Anyways, about the hotel....The staff was very helpful and friendly. We had a Japanese style room with private bath. Our room was clean and comfortable. There is also a public bath in the basement. The breakfast was simple with toasts, soup mixes, eggs, salad, tea, and coffee. The hotel is well-maintained, but it is a little old and needs some renovation. Note that most of the shops and restaurants near the hotel are not open at night. We had to drive for like 10 mins for dinner.
- Michaljon (10/5): A warm, freindly, traditional experience - We arrived at 11:30pm do to traveling late, I received multiple emails from the hotel asking what time I would arrive (I unfortunately didn’t see them until I arrived because I wasn’t checking my phone). This was very responsible of them and I appreciate their concern. The hotel room is bigger than I thought it would be and the futon was comfortable. The closing time for the bath hous is reasonable and very warm. I enjoyed all of our amenities and the front desk is so kind! Thanks again!
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Pete (10/5): - We couldn't have been happier with this ryokan. While not a onsen with a natural spring bath, we went in not sure what to expect and truly enjoyed our stay here. The staff was super friendly and helpful and the facilities were exactly the ryokan experience we were looking for. As for that shared bath, fantastic and calming! Great location for the World Heritage Sites, too!
- 681shirleyr (10/5): Amazing staff - The staff was so very friendly and attentive. They all came out to greet us when we arrived and all wished us well when we departed. Room was spacious for Japan with all the amenities you would need. Be aware that rooms are Japanese style so you sleep on the floor. But futon is very comfy. Breakfast is included and there is hot springs on the premises too.
Location is in a small town right next to a beautiful river.
Would love to stay there again!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Had a very pleasant stay just overnight. Staff very helpful & pleasant. Nice surprise to have a light breakfast included. Small inn so had to do some self service eg, lay out the futon for sleeping yourself, which was fine. A/C worked well & quietly.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Close to the shrine and temples - Very grateful to the whole staff and a special Thank you to the gentleman who brought back my phone to the train
Raymond Fortin
- DougB868 (6/5): Nice Japanese style room and good location - My first experience in a Japanese style room and it was sweet, but compared to the ones I had later in the trip it was just average. The room was fine and a good size, but nothing special. A decent walk from the train station (although a bus stop is right outside the front door), but very convenient to the main sites of Nikko. It was perfect and clean for a one night stay, and the price was very reasonable. Wish it had a onsen.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nikko - The location of this hotel is fantastic and the staff is wonderful. Unfortunately the smoke smell that permiated the entire hotel was quite off-putting.
The rooms are clean and nice but be prepared for the traditional Japanese bed. The mats provide nearly zero cushioning so sleeping was very uncomfortable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The room is clean and comfortable, friendly staff let us have a happy mood
- wrinkledpassport (10/5): Perfect Location Right at the Base of the Shrine Area! - Couldn't have asked for a better location! The sacred bridge is almost right across the street and it leads right to the hill with the shrine/temple area--less than a block from the hotel! (Of course, once you enter the complex, there is still a lot of uphill walking to reach the main shrines and buildings but you'll be so enthralled with the beauty of the forest and your surroundings, you won't mind the hike. Just be prepared that it's a pretty large area to cover.)
The ladies at the front desk are sweet but have very limited English. Their relief to find out that my tall blond son spoke perfect Japanese was almost comical! There is a lovely onsen hot springs pool in the basement that we had completely to ourselves. Breakfast was adequate.
Be aware that most people visit Nikko as a day trip from Tokyo so the place closes up completely by about 6:00 p.m. Dining options are very limited. There is a wonderful steakhouse just up the hill from the bridge that we ate at twice.
Take a taxi from the train station. The hotel is uphill from the station and much too far to walk.
- 73amanda73 (4/5): Staff rushed check in and broke camera, no shower or bath in room - When I arrived here this afternoon the staff rushed me getting out of the taxi and took my bag away before I could stop them and my camera fell out and my $1000 lens broke. They did not seem to understand what they did. So although the room is nice and the hotel is very clean, I am very displeased with their treatment at check in and even more unhappy about the fact that my expensive equipment is broken. They also rushed the checkin process in general and there is no shower or bath in the room which was not made clear at time of booking.
- Suchai (8/5): Great location and nice people. - Very closed to Shinkyo bridge and the walking distance to all the famous shrines and temples. The bus stop is in front of the hotel, very convenience to go around the Nikko National Park. The hotel staffs are very friendly and polite.
- Eric (8/5): - Good choice if you are looking for japanese style rooms. Breakfast is limited.
- Verified traveler (2/5): No hospitality whatsoever! - DO NO STAY HERE!!! NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!
- if you ask for any hospitality then you need to pay up. Leaving you luggage after check out is 500Y.
- public bath has terrible sewer odor and very small.
- the taxi company that they called for us add HUGH SURCHARGE, just because we are foreigner.
- they are so affair of their guest that they ask for room key each time you leave the property. WTH!!
All 4 of us felt the same that this stay is our WORST in our 2 weeks here in Japan. Don't waste your hard earned money here!!
- colah0 (10/5): Friendly staff and authentic Japanese room - Nikko Tokino yuu hotel is right next to shinkyo (the sacred bridge), just 5 mins bus from the train station, walk-able too. The staff are all friendly and polite, it was a shower rain when we check-in, the staff gave us towel and help drying our luggage! We were surprised and thankful for that.
We were staying in a traditional Japanese room, with a large living area (also sleeping area), toilet and bathroom are separated, they are all clean and neat. There is a public bath in the hotel, we went there at around 10pm, it was quite, nobody there but only 2 of us!
Also, the breakfast is simple but tasty. There are milk, soup, sausage, cheese, ham, potato salad, scrambled egg, bread... I really like the strawberry jam and butter there, since strawberries are famous in Tochigi, the jam is really great!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Traditional Japanese style hotel - The staff are really friendly and polite! The room is the authentic Japanese style one, a large and comfy area for both living room and bedroom. you have to make the bed (Tatami) on your own, it was not bad to sleep there. The bathroom and toilet are separated, also you can go to the public bath in the B1 floor.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Pleasant Stay - We enjoyed our stay in this property. Convenient and welcoming!
- dcc78 (10/5): Pleasant Stay - The ryokan is situated near Nikko Central and along the main street, which is easier to locate. We arrived at about 8pm and check-in was easy and fast. The reception staff were polite and welcoming. We booked the en-suite room and Japanese bathrobes (of our sizes) were provided for us to enjoy the onsen facility in level 1. The room is neat, clean and cosy. We enjoyed our stay in Nikko Tokino Yuu very much.
- W3013UBdebbies (8/5): Nice location, clean - We stayed here for two nights and enjoyed our time. It was clean and the staff were very nice. A light breakfast (sausage, eggs, toast, salad) is included in the morning. It is located near the major shrines and temples in Nikko, although it is an uphill 25 minute walk from the JR station. They provided restaurant recommendations, although many places in Nikko close early in the evening. Our futons were worn but adequate. You can get a room with a private bathroom which was nice (but very small and impossible not to get water everywhere from the shower). We did not try the public bath in the basement because there was not a mixed gender or private option. The view from the rooms was beautiful, and we hardly heard any sounds from neighboring rooms.
- Gary (8/5): Nice hotel in a convenient location - This is a very nice small hotel in Nikko. It is very convenient for the toshogu shrine etc, and literally right next to one of the shuttle bus stops that runs between the station, shrines and Chuzengi. We had a pleasant Japanese style room, and the hotel had a nice Onsen. There was a good continental style breakfast.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Onsen and location was great, very convenient. Breakfast not so great, limited selection and not very appetizing food. Very polite and detailed service, limited by language. However, the city information and hotel information did not tell us that restaurants close super early (many by 6 or 7pm), by the time we had checked in, it was already 7pm and we had only cup noodles for dinner.
- Ronald (10/5): Relaxing, beautiful and super location - Great location among temples and other historical sites and natural beauty.
Relaxing hotel and great staff.
- radiogaga (8/5): comfortable and good location - The room is spacious and comfortable with traditional Japanese bedding futon provided. We enjoyed the public bath at basement in cold winter night. It was really comforting. We reckon the breakfast spread was reasonable good with toast, 3 types of buns, Japanese potato salad, scrambled eggs, mixed salad, hot coffee and tea (with a few coffe&tea selections as well). The front desk staff on duty during our stay are polite and helpful despite their inadequancy in English. The hotel is conveniently located near major sights and bus stops are right in front of hotel. My only complaint is the slight tobacco smell when entering the room.
- JamesOwen (8/5): Good option for Nikko - Formal place with very friendly staff. The room was as expected - basic and clean with the Japanese style seating ad futon mattresses. The breakfast was ok with good choices, but the staff hovered around you a lot, so not very relaxing. The baths downstairs were good, go as they open if you want the place for yourself. Good location close to the sights.
- AdamGaits (8/5): Excellent Japanese Style Hotel - We stayed at this hotel for one night during a visit to Nikko. There were 3 of us in the group.
The hotel rooms are all Japanese style. The styling is a little modern with good lighting. The rooms are well appointed and spacious. The futons and bedding are all good quality and clean. Our room had a private toilet and basin. In the hallway there was a shared bathroom.
In the basement there is a communal bathroom and spa which is very clean and well styled with an opening into a garden.
Breakfast was included. All in all an excellent stay. However there are not many dining options close by, all are at least a 10 minute walk away.
- Nomadicexpedition (2/5): Rude Staff and owner Lady - just checked out of Nikko Toniyuu hotel. After an amazing eight days in Japan, and after constantly raving about Japan- saddened that this happened to me the last day in Japan. I had booked Tokino yuu to experience a ryokan which was a unique experience. I had left my bag with them after checkout, on extra payment. When I came to pick my bag up- they did not let me use the ladies toilet and when I asked multiple times for the reason- they said its being cleaned. Not only that, i asked if I could stay in the reception area as it was warmer, as my bus will arrive after 5 minutes- the lady owner (she did a gesture of crossing her arms in a No) as well as the staff did not let me stay, argued and said not allowed and opened the door to ask me to go out. Goddammit I was your damn customer one night ago!!! What a contrast after staying at the best of Ginza hotels in Tokyo. To me bad behavior is a bigger turnoff than lack of any amenity! Hope this review helps guests to decide better and helps the manager/ staff/ owners to behave better!!!!
- Dino (10/5): Great location - I stayed here because I found a review on another site saying tattoos were ok at the onsen. That was true. The onsen, however, was a bit basic. The staff, although they couldn't speak a lot of English, were extremely kind and welcoming. Even helped us locate a lost bag by calling the bus company and train station for us. The big selling point is the location. A bit of a walk from the station. But an easy walk to all the sightseeing spots.
- stfsev (8/5): Good situation - It is a small ryokan near the temples of Nikko. People are friendly and speak a little bit English.
You can sleep on tatami and futon, breakfast is correct & onsens are clean . What more?
A little bit far away from the restaurants for dinner but you can go to BAR KUJIRA SHOKUDO.
- FGraz (8/5): Location Location Location - A friend and I booked two nights at this very centrally located hotel in Nikko. It is just a stone's throw from the Shinkyo Bridge and the entrance to the World Heritage Sites in Nikko. The hotel does not serve dinner, but the staff provides knowledgeable and friendly recommendations for restaurants in and around the hotel. In fact, hotel guests can get a discount or gift at certain recommended restaurants. The bathing area is very clean and a balm after a day of sightseeing. The breakfast buffet is limited, but the coffee and tea are both delicious. This is a good hotel that offers value to its guest.
- ChingYao (10/5): Great location, nice staff, overall great stay - The location was prefect, right below shinkyo and the temples. The staff speaks little English enough for communication. The room was big and overall comfortable. Great price for the quality we get, would definitely recommend staying here.
- Meanii (10/5): Nice hotel close to the heritage and temple. - The staff are very nice and smileness. This is the best feeling if compare to other 4 hotel that we booked for this trip.
- BombaxFlower (8/5): Simply lovely, easy access to river walk and temples! - A very friendly and comfortable location with lovely spacious room and view of hills. Breakfast was simple and a bit funny, but fine. The best thing was location near the old bridge and easy access to park. Staff were gracious, of course, nice large Lobby area.
- darwinkgo (10/5): Great Hotel Close to Historic Sites - This hotel is on the main drag, much closer to the Shinkyo Bridge than to the Tobu and JR train stations. The breakfast is western style - a bit of a disappointment, but maybe they do both when they are busier. The room was spacious and comfortable.
- bistvan (10/5): Amazing! - The location is just perfect and the staff as well. It's just on Nikko's main road. Just a few steps from Nikkos's famous bridge and the entrance of the shrine-complex. The railway station is like a 15 minutes walk.
The rooms are amazing! It's like how you imagine the ancient Japan.
Thanks you very much!
- TommyHTown (6/5): Great location, but everything is just OK - First of all, Nikko Tokino Yu is not a bad Ryokan. However, I expected more from what I paid for. Perhaps I should have expected less, but on this trip I didn't.
Let's talk about the positives. Great location! This property is literally across the street from the red bridge, Shinkyo Bridge. It was a few minutes from Nikko World Heritage entrance. You can also walk to Tobu station if you only have a carryon or a backpack.
The staff was great. The receptionist was fluent in English and let us leave our luggage before checkin time. The staff at breakfast were nice and accommodating.
Now on to the bad, there was no onsen, but rather just a public bath. Plus, there was no private bath either. The bathing facility was small but it was the right size considering the number of rooms this hotel had.
The room itself was big enough for the four of us. However, the restroom was small and old. It needed some upgrade or at least some retouching. There was no view from the room either. The breakfast buffet was decent, but if the hotel were to offer traditional meal for either dinner or breakfast that would have been better. It would have justified the rates that I paid.
Considering the price that we paid for the accommodation. I would say that the hotel came slightly below my expectation on the room and the value per its rates. However, the location was great. In this area alone, the hotel exceeded my expectation, and that is why the hotel received an average rating from me.
- Miranda (8/5): nice hotel great location - Enjoyed the hotel. A great ryokan experience and enjoyed the onsen. Has a toilet and sink in the traditional rooms but have to use the public bath instead of shower which was really quite nice. Great location near temples plus bus stop eight out front. The breakfast leaves a bit to be desired but consider it a free inclusion.
- Carole (6/5): Ok ryokan, can find better accommodation elsewhere - The hotel was nicely located on the main street (close to shrines and Nikko tourist attractions). A few minutes from main station (can walk up to it, but it's on a slight hill).
The ryokan itself was ok on first impression (tatami in room, bedding was fine and warm, but the room was cold to start with, as temperature was low -there is the AC, but it only is a single blast of air, so need to repeat the operation several times). I think it's because windows were left opened to aerate.
The downsides are several: No curtain (only a 'paper wall' as seen in Japanese accommodation). It's a problem as you're awoken by light in the morning.
The room we had was situated on the street, which is very noisy in the morning (from about 4am, lots of heavy traffic outside, so we had to use earplugs/eye masks).
There was no bathroom at all (only a sink) and the 'main bathroom' on the floor were more sinks, so impossible to shower, unless you went to the onsen on the ground floor. Main issue really was the toilet, which really made us noiseous in the morning (so much so that we had to take out stuff and pack outside the room after breakfast as we could no longer stand it). We went to other ryokan and hotels in Japan during our stay, and this was the worse. I would not recommend, as other accommodation would be preferable. Breakfast (offered, but you do pay for it through your room fee!) was minimal and cheap (jam/butter in a 'press and spread' combo serving, juice-drink, Kraft sliced cheese)
- Thong Liang (8/5): Overall good stay ryokan style - Tokino yuu is at a wonderful location for travellers intending to visit the shrines and beyond. Bus stop no. 7 is right at the door step, so for those who intend to stay for 2 days, do consider getting the bus pass for up to Lake Chuzenji onsen (2000 yen) or Yumoto onsen (3500 yen), and you can take the bus from train station to Tokino yuu with this bus pass. For those with heavy luggage, do not consider walking up unless you are used to walking with heavy cargo. Room is spacious, comfortable. We reserve the room with private bath, but for those who are ok with a public bath (available on each room), then room with private bath may not be necessary. Basic breakfast is served, which is ok. Hotel basement is a grand public bath for a hot soak included, but only gripe may be it seems the hot onsen pool needs to be cleaned more often. As both me and my female companion notice some "foreign particles" in the pool, which I think for Japanese standard not really good. Overall good for stay for overnights at Nikko for travellers.
- steve (10/5): lovely small hotel, very close to the shrines. - Very friendly desk staff, lovely Japanese-style room with tatami mats and a futon. Also had en-suite bathroom and entrance hall. Very reasonable price with excellent free wi-fi and breakfast. Couldn't fault it really although the 10am check-out is a little early by Western standards.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The staff is helpful. Location is good for sightseeing and transportation. But they charge 500yen to keep the luggage in the reception after check out (until 1300).
- Robin (8/5): - If your looking for traditional Japanese hotel near the temple area you won't find a better hotel. Staff was very welcoming and attentive. The hotel itsel right next to the bus stop and directly across form the sacred bridge and entrance to the main temple area.
- Johnny (10/5): Highly recommended full-service hotel! - Great hotel staff, awesome meals. Tucked a bit away from the main town, there is free shuttle service included to take you on your journeys after breakfast (which you won't want to miss). Highly recommended.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Comfortable, Japanese-style hotel - This Japanese-style hotel is well-situated by the entrance to the Nikko National Park and close to Tosho-gu shrine. The neighbourhood has several restaurant options, but it is quite far from the main train station on foot. The room was very spacious, with a low kotatsu table, and a nice view of the main street. There is also a TV and kettle available, and futons for the guests. Recommended for those who would like to have a Japanese inn experience for a more reasonable cost.
- Lyle (8/5): Recently updated, friendly hotel near the sights - Toki no Yuu is a nicely updated, friendly hotel near Shinkyou bridge. Walkable to Toshogu and a bus stop to the station right in front. Rooms are clean and look recently redecorated and updated. Our room overlooked the main road but didn't hear any noise. Breakfast was nice and staff was really helpful. I would have liked a slightly nicer onsen inside and the area itself is a bit lacking in restaurants / convenience stores but that' a Nikko issue, not a problem with the hotel.
- Paul (6/5): Solid no frills hotel for the seasoned traveller - This hotel is in a good location, but should not be for your first experience for a Japanese style hotel. It is just not finished in that way. It is more of a low key hotel, though can work just fine if you are a seasoned traveller in Japan and not looking for anything too special. We stayed Friday night and Saturday night. The hotel was fully booked Saturday night, and Sunday morning breakfast had 90% more than Saturday. In other words, the hotel doesn't put out a full breakfast option when the hotel is not really that booked. On the plus side, the Onsen (public bath) was empty on Friday night... The hotel also seems to nickle and dime a bit. Charing 1000yen for each half hour your stay past the 10 am checkout, and also charging 500yen to keep your bag for the day.
