Guest Reviews
- Kendyll (8/5): Cute and cozy, but noisy. - Comfortable, clean. Being told there were no cushions for the patio furniture, then two days later cushions appear. It’s noisy in the parking lots early in the morning.
- Linda (10/5): - Location, location, location! Quaint and well appointed Hotel!
- Gabriel (3/5): Wouldn't stay there again - 300 for shared bathrooms and no sound on tv is alittle ridiculous 300 for shared bathrooms and no sound on tv is alittle ridiculous
- karen (8/5): -
- Tara (6/5): - Having stayed at Bird Rock and Earthbox I'd choose Earthbox for my next visit to Friday Harbor.
Both properties are well decorated and maintained but, despite Bird Rock's convenience, for those who are walking from the ferry, Earthbox has the advantage of being a quiet location who's rooms ( or at least my room ) have sleeping areas that are not flooded with light ( during typical sleeping hours).
The staff are very helpful and welcoming.
- Sheri (10/5): - Never really saw the staff, but didn't need them.
- Ryan (8/5): - There was no staff on premise, which is not what I expected in a hotel
- Bret (10/5): Great Cruising Stay - The electronic check-in went smoothly and the location was great. Room was comfortable and the area was quiet.
- caitlinmhunter (10/5): Charming, Comfortable Stay in the Heart of Friday Harbor - We loved our stay at the Bird Rock Hotel! The location couldn't be better - right in the heart of Friday Harbor and within walking distance to everything. The hotel itself is quaint, but also updated, so you get that cozy island charm with modern comforts. Our room (#7) was comfortable and the atmosphere felt very welcoming.
What really stood out was the excellent customer service. The texting option was fast, efficient, and we were always treated with kindness and care. It was the perfect base for exploring the San Juan Islands, and I would absolutely stay here again. Highly recommend!
- Jinyao (8/5): - Room is a little small but very clean.
- Peter (9/5): -
- Kim (9/5): Comfortable and Accommodating - The property is well maintained and is beautiful with the courtyard and flowers. Our suite had pretty much everything we needed with extra supplies easily accessible on the first floor. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom and kitchen were large. Our view of the water was beautiful. Carrying luggage up to the third floor was difficult.
- Catherine (9/5): - Super cozy and quiet A bit pricey
- Catherine (9/5): -
- Allard (8/5): -
- Gyung (6/5): - Good overall stay but shared bathroom on second floor kinda challenging especially being on third floor when considering the pricing.... No elevators and limited staff hours.
- sharonhW6494FH (10/5): Amazing little gem of a hotel!! - What an amazing time we had at Bird Rock Hotel!! Reims were clean, cozy and perfect for our family. Close to the water, shops and restaurants. Can wait to come back and stay at this hotel again. Would HIGHLY recommend!
- Ricardo (10/5): -
- Robyn (10/5): -
- Bradley (8/5): -
- Nanette (10/5): Weekend getaway! - Great location for walking around town. Loved Friday Harbor.
- Shawn (10/5): - Beautiful historic property! Situated in middle of everything! Clean property.
- Curtis (6/5): - Small room no A/C, no window, very hot in room, had to sleep with the door open. Men’s underwear hanging in 1 of the bathrooms. Contact with a person was confusing.
- Ellen (10/5): Fabulous location and place to stay for a holiday. - Clean, comfortable and helpful staff. The location is ideal for visiting Friday Harbor.
- Barton (6/5): - Convenient. Walkaway. Close to everything in Friday Harbor.Clean rooms. Uncomfortabe beds.
- Deborah (6/5): Nice location, clean, No AC, remote "customer serv - Hotel was very clean. However, they do not have a place to sstore luggage pre- or post-check-in so you have to take it 3 blocks up hill to the companion hotel. There is also no airconditioning and no windows to open. Our room was warm and stuffy so we slept with the outside door (second floor!) open. Good location in town and very clean. Not wild about remote hotel staff conact only. call me old fashioned.
- Cathy (10/5): Exceptional - Well cared for!! Clean. Lots of TLC. You should mention the eating area and frig on your site!!
- kirstendJ287EC (10/5): Easy, fun, relaxing getawy - My husband and I love this place. We have been back multiple times. Trendy, NW, spa vibes. Very romantic. It's great to be in walking distance of literally everything but also have a beautiful room and cozy lobby to hang out to have a cocktail and play games. We've come with a group of friends as well because the island is great for day trips like hiking and biking, and the hotel is great for chilling as a group and easy walk to dinner spots.
- Christian (10/5): - Nice place! Friendly staff!
- Resort556072 (6/5): Not the Same - Years ago this place was incredibly welcoming with a friendly lobby, continental breakfast with homemade scones, cookies and lemonade in the afternoon and you would get the best sleep in the most comfortable bed ever. The experience is different now and not the five star rating I gave it in the past. The bed felt like it had a broken spring, the pillows weren't great and I didn't sleep great. Other amenities have gone down hill or disappeared as well, but I do like that you can get into your room with a code. That part is a nice improvement. Overall, this was a mediocre experience and after many long years of going to this hotel in the past, we might try somewhere else in the future.
- Y6292XTbrianp (2/5): Unfit for being member of Hotels.com - false marketing. - I booked this hotel, a couple of days later they write me that my room is on 3 floor and by the way it has no toilet, you will find that on the second floor. They did not say that and does not say that when booking, so you are led to believe it is a normal hotel room like any other room in a hotel that has a price tag of almost 300 USD. We would never book a room that does not have a toilet in the room, it is not a camping we are going on. So we canceled.
- Gary (4/5): - Basically, staff was not available to answer questions. The room was super small and not worth the cost. I consider this hotel a rip-off!
- Lauren (10/5): Exceptional -
- Crystal (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ela (9/5): Highly recommended place! - Cleanness/decor/ quiet/ overall presentation/instrumental music at the lobby.
Many detailed attention .!
Superb TEAM Members! They go out of their way to exceed expectations ! Room I stayed in / second floor , did not have a window and I usually get and inch of my window to get better rest !
- Ela (9/5): Superb -
- Andrew (8/5): Very good - Coffee was tasteless
- Mohamed (10/5): It was great I love it -
- Emily (10/5): - Excellent and prompt communication from staff. Easy remote check-in. Very lovely space and comfortable accommodations.
- Ryszard (3/5): Will not come back. And not recommending 😑 - Location No hot water available for tea. No hairdryer. Not working coffee maker, no view.
- Chris (9/5): Superb - Great response time on check in
- 932fredw (6/5): A room with a view? - My wife and I stayed in the Speiden room for two nights. It was an OK room with an odd shower, very deep with an unusual step in. The bird Rock has a good downtown location. Our room had a view of a supermarket loading dock. It was quite noisy early in the morning. I don’t know about the other rooms but I feel that prospective customers should be aware of this. I sent an email to the owner about this but I did not get a response. I was disappointed that I didn’t get a response.
On the positive side, the community area outside our room was nice and gave us some extra space to chill out.
- kaeraj2024 (6/5): Hair in bed - The place was cute and quaint. The common area was nice and stocked with coffee and tea. We stayed in the Fidalgo room, it was small but cozy. The reason for the three stars is there was multiple chunks of black hair in the bedsheets when we pulled them back. For $345 a night I would have expected a clean bed and not a bunch of women’s black hair. It was actually quite gross and if we were staying somewhere with a front desk I would have definitely asked to change rooms. Other than that everything else seemed clean and it was quiet. The only other thing to note is there is no sink in the bathroom so you need to wash your face and brush teeth in the kitchenette.
- Socorro (8/5): Doesn’t light up your life! - The bathroom lighting was extremely poor. We were there for a wedding and got ready with poor lighting. It was awful. My sister who was in another room had no mirrors in the room. We had to go out to buy mirrors. Not sure if we would come back to this hotel.
- Austin Lee (10/5): - The hotel is super nice and very high-quality, My wife had some concerns about a shared bathroom, but it really wasn’t a bad deal at all. Bathrooms are really nice and upgraded. Super nice place!
- Christine (10/5): Exceptional - Room was perfect with a shared deck. Bathrooms were spotless with no waiting!
- Frank J (10/5): - Dubious security provided for bicycles not allowed in rooms. Bike parking area was in full view and access to passersby.
- Stacey (10/5): Very nice place. Clean, easy registration, explained parking and other details very well. Would stay again - Right in the middle of everything! Walking distance to all shops and restaurants It was a bit noisy but the earplugs worked great
- David (8/5): - Clean. Manager responsive to request. Very noisy. Difficult walk from ferry terminal.
- Jenny (6/5): - Cute place in a good location of town; however, we were on the 3rd floor backside facing a parking lot. Loading noise started at 7am both mornings!
- Annie (10/5): - Nicely stocked lobby area.
- Jon (10/5): - Clean, quiet, centrally located. Staff was super friendly and helpful!
- Jean Luc (2/5): - Parking problem
- fromDianne (8/5): GREAT LOCATION in an historic building - We stayed in a two-room suite on the lowest floor. We checked in remotely and never saw a staff member, but any needs were just a phone call away. Our entrance was from the side of the building, while most of the others were from the front entrance and lobby area.
The suite was clean and comfortable. The sitting area was separate from the bedroom. And the kitchen area was bigger than usual with a full-size sink. It was well stocked. You had access to replenish all your needs in the lobby area, which had a lovely sitting area, table seating and quiet music playing. Access to it was also by a code. We explored upstairs from there and found access to a nice sitting area on the balcony. Also a nice enclosed courtyard outside the front entrance. There are bikes available for use, but unless you’re good at navigating steep hills - don’t expect to use them.
Remember, you have access to a pool and spa at their sister property. That’s also where a front desk is manned. It’s not as centrally located, but within walking distance of the Bird Rock.
Some reviews complained about the street noise. For us, it was just in the early morning when we heard trucks (maybe garbage collection?). The shower had plenty of hot water - and good pressure. We had to be conscious of the step-down to the bathroom and kitchen area. Nice that they have a built-in nightlight there. Would not use the sofa bed for adults. I slept on it and was very uncomfortable as I could feel the bars below the mattress.
- Jennifer (9/5): Superb -
- Yialdy (6/5): Pleasant - Too small
- Melissa (8/5): - I thought this place was really cute. We booked it super last minute for a busy weekend, so we got a room without a bathroom and had to use the shared bathrooms. But it worked out well. I never had to wait. Everything was so nice. I loved the bathrobes too. I have two tiny complaints. One would be the pillows were too big and poofy. Way too thick for me to be comfortable. Some slim pillow options would be nice. And the sheets smelled like bleach.
- Bride (10/5): Love this beautiful hotel. Location, comfort and charm. Just the right size. -
- DAVID (10/5): - Na
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We enjoyed the central location of the hotel. Parking was tricky, and we wish the hotel had parking spaces on the lot across the street.
- DEBRA (8/5): - The property was beautiful and spacious. The location couldn't have been better!! Although staff is not on-site, they were VERY responsive with answers to the few questions we had.
- Llolyn (3/5): I wouldn’t see there again. - It was only a block or two away from the main harbor and shopping with restaurants. I was in room seven and that backed up to the parking lot of the grocery store. My balcony overlooked the parking lot. Starting at 3 AM the trucks were delivering products and there was a lot of squeaky noises and rolling up of the door of the truck which kept up until about six in the morning. There are two showerheads and one of themdribbled water. The other one did not have adequate water pressure. I called the next day and they put me in the other hotel which is called Earth Box which was much much better and even cheaper. It wasn’t worth $350. I would say the room is worth $150. if you don’t mind being up most of the night. So they did give me 25% Discount, but that didn’t cover not being able to sleep most of the night since I didn’t arrive there till 11 PM.
There is no parking either. Overnight parking is available on the street. But from 8 AM to 5 PM you have to move your car every two hours.
Also next to each side of the bed there’s earplugs. At first I wondered why? But then a group of people were in the lobby and I was about 15 feet away and even though they weren’t loud, I certainly heard them in my room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location! - We realized we do not like shared bathrooms and it was tough not having any running water in the room. Even a small sink woulf be great!
- Julie (7/5): Nice place ,love the remote access. Bathroom too few. - Very very clean. Ice room. Nice lobby and patio. Bathroom , only two for two floors of rooms. Hot in the room.
- Kristi (9/5): Excellent location but the on street parking was difficult and miserable. They did however allow you to park in their “s - Location No parking
- Angela (7/5): We really like the location of the unit but the room needs some updating. Over all we enjoyed our stay. - Well kept clean and the location was great! The TVs in the room are old and annoying to use. One of the ceiling fans didn’t work. The shower head needs to be replaced.
- Sandra (8/5): Good location, good surroundings, but a little noisy for my taste - The facility was very clean, but it run remotely never had a human being to ask a question For the price that I paid I was expecting to at least have some toast or yogurt for breakfast
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional -
- annjN8429IS (10/5): Wonderful 4-day visit! - We had a truly perfect experience! It was our first time in the San Juan Islands and the hotel is both lovely and in an ideal location. We had the Marrowstone Suite - so it was extra special. Hot tub was such a nice way to end the day! I read some negative reviews about the desk being unstaffed, but we thought the service was top notch! Extra towels and necessities are available whenever you need them, and every question we asked was answered pretty much immediately! Better than most hotels! Highly recommend!
- Reygan (10/5): Amazing location and communcation with the Staff was easy. - Location was Perfect
- Angela (10/5): Very relaxing and comfortable - Plenty of space in the room and nice jacuzzi tub. The balcony was nice to relax on too. I thought we’d have a view of the water from the balcony but we did not.
- Amy (10/5): - Great location. Clean, charming property. Would definitely stay here again.
- ANTHONY (10/5): - It was great!
- Kaleigh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Y7543CDkevinw (10/5): Loved it and will be back - Love the room and amenities at the hotel, and its location is walking distance to all of downtown Friday Harbor. The balcony overlooking the docks in the evening was our favorite part of our stay, with open but still private views where we could enjoy the evening
- Uecker (7/5): We were satisfied but not impressed. - Cleanliness and modern facilities No staff to assist with local questions or any personal interaction. No food on premises for breakfast. No warning of staffing decisions but expensive rates blamed on buying local.
- Kieth (10/5): - Perfect location. Property was quiet and I enjoyed checking in online, using a code to enter. Owner/operator was very responsive via text.
- AZsunandfun99 (6/5): Avoid Marrowstone Suite - Stayed here/sister hotel many times over several years and always enjoyed. This suite is bad. Not physically connected to hotel. 1990s nursing home style shower. No counter space in bath. Major road noise requiring ear plugs. Lights and outlets don’t work.
- Amanda (6/5): Convenient location and decent price for SJI but no amenities and some cleanliness/noise issues - The location is very easy access from the Friday Harbor ferry station - probably a 5-minute walk. It was also a quick walk to the Courthouse where my shuttle left for the half marathon. The codes on the doors made access simple. 3* hotel and nothing more. It wasn't evident to me upon booking that this is a sort of 'ghost hotel,' where you won't interact with a human. There is a code to get in the front door and to get into your room, and there is a number you can call, but there are no staff on site. I travel weekly for work and am used to at least coffee being put out in the morning, but there are no services here (other than room cleaning). They humorously mention this in your check-in email, but there is almost zero noise insulation between hotel rooms and from the outdoors. I am a heavy sleeper and was woken up by the very loud garbage truck just below my room as well as some other loading dock noises from a nearby business. The room seemed clean, except when I opened the mini fridge, a terrible smell emerged, and there were moldy leftovers from previous guests (at least 3+ days old) that we had to take outside and dispose of because they stunk up the room. When we arrived, the room was 85+ degrees, but thankfully there was both AC and a fan to cool it down which kept it comfortable for the rest of the stay. There is also no parking, which means that from 8a-5p you have to move your car every 2 hours - this could be challenging on a high-season Saturday or Sunday. Will definitely look for somewhere else on our next stay.
- Richelle (7/5): Affordable for Friday harbor, excellent location, read the fine print. - The location was phenomenal. One block off the main strip and walkable to my destination. The bed was very comfortable and there were a lot of pillows. There was a deck off my room which was an added plus. The room did not have a window. I knew there wasn’t air conditioning but the only air circulation came from opening a door to the deck. I could leave that open until I went to sleep and then a room got a bit stuffy even with a ceiling fan.
There was a door to the room next to mine and it blocked none of the noise coming from my very drunk and loud neighbors. The hotel did provide ear plugs that that only did so much. I knew I was getting a room with a detached bathroom, the problem was when people didn’t figure out how to lock it while they were using it.
- joehG3958HP (10/5): Friday Harbors best - The room was perfect for us. I thought not having someone at the desk would be weird, but it's not. Everything we needed was un reach. Beds are comfy, room was clean. The staff stayed in really good contact with us via text. Would definitely stay here again.
- Kristin (10/5): - Cool old building with modern updates. The remote check in was clear and smooth. We received a couple texts from staff checking in during our stay, so it still felt very personable. Would highly recommend.
- James (8/5): Very comfortable room in a great location. - Clean well appointed rooms. Shared facilities.
- Emily (10/5): Exceptional -
- Daniel (10/5): - Very cute and the decorating, facilities, equipment were very nice. We were fortunate enough to have the shared bathroom to ourselves during a covid peak, so that was nice as well (we visited during the week in autumn). Right in the heart of everything in Friday Harbor. We would stay here again.
- Allen (7/5): Good -
- TIMOTHY (10/5): - First time to Friday Harbor love the hotel will stay again
- roby5682 (10/5): Friday Harbor vacation - Nice hotel in middle of downtown Friday Harbor. Very quiet , with all the needed amenities. Coffee was great ! . There’s bikes nearby for renting. We just walked around the town . There’s tea , apple cider that you can have anytime of the day . Very relaxing atmosphere .
- KindalH_13 (2/5): Not a hotel anymore, not safe, no bathroom access - 1. This is NOT a hotel. There is no staff at the hotel and you will get no service. As stated by the manager, "you have to fill out everything online because we have no reception staff. We decided to go airbnb style." If they decided to rent room in this now 15 room old building, they should call it an airbnb, not a hotel. Again, you will get no service because there is literally no staff here.
2. We rented this hotel 10 years ago for our wedding and we remember what a fun, quirky gem this was in Friday Harbor. No more and definitely not worth the money.
3. They have refinished upstairs bedrooms and there are new ones available.. all of which share two bathrooms on the 2nd floor. We could not get bathroom access in the morning. We count at least 6 rooms sharing 2 bathrooms, there could be more.. This airbnb is not providing basic access to the bathroom that one would expect as a basic a motel 6. Again the price is outrageous.
4. There was a bright light outside of our window for the fire exit stairwell thay could not be turned off. My husband and I woke at 4am thinking it was 8 am.
5. There was someone in our room who opened my husband's suitcase when we went downstairs to go to the bathroom. The facility is not secure and there is no staff. Clearly some of the locals know this. You are at your own risk here.
- Douglas (5/5): Room was clean and well appointed but the lack of a person on the premises made for a melancholy experience. - The room was well appointed except for the supermarket loading zone outside our window. The room was clean. Bed was comfortable. There was no one around to check in, prepare breakfast buffet, or to answer questions about how get into our room. We needed to walk 3 blocks to another property to talk to a real person and check in. She was very cordial. Once in the room we had trouble controlling the temperature as there were no instructions present. We wished we had booked another place. Particularly after paying close to $300 for the night.
- Gabrielle (9/5): Great stay, very comfortable and convenient. - The check on was easy. The location was near food and activities. It was clean and modern. Next time I’d chose a room with a bathroom inside not down the hall. This was a little inconvenient.
- Jane (8/5): Great stay for the one night. - Great location, downtown. Close to everything. Keyless locks👍 Street parking, smallish rooms but very adequate
- Donald J. (6/5): - The key area that was excellent was the staff Arlene and Holly. I was not aware that there was not dedicated parking.
I walk with a cane and we had to park down the block. Also, the check-in was virtual and we had some difficulty understanding how to access the room. For the room we had you go through a swinging door to the left that appeared to be pad locked. It would be great if the padlock was removed totally making it less confusing. I would have also liked some type of security latch on the entrance door. This hotel was comfortable and conveniently located. In the living room they had a shag thick rug under the coffee table that due to the closeness I tripped on a couple of times. Again, I want to close and state that Arlene and Holly were absolutely great.
- Brian (6/5): Great location but limited comfort - It’s well-located, with clean modern fixtures and furnishings. But this is not a hotel, it’s a multi room ABNB. There’s no staff on site and response time to texts can vary. I can only speak for our room (12) which was a large bathroom with a bed in it. You step out of the shower right to the bed. The toilet has a sliding door, but it’s only a few feet from the bed. Power outlets are very hard to access. There is limited dresser and hanger capacity. No fridge or microwave. The room is an example of a Paul Simon lyric, “One man’s ceiling is another man’s floor.” You can hear EVERYTHING going on on the floor above you. So, great location but limited comfort for the price.
- Bonnie (10/5): - Quaint, historic hotel. Separate bathroom, but great robes to traverse the halls
- Dania (10/5): - The lack of in-person staff was odd at first, but I got more help from texting my concierge than at any of the other hotels we stayed at during this trip. Facilities were clean and the whole place looked great; it was a bit noisy outside but the hotel's in the middle of downtown and near all the action, so it's a fair tradeoff for convenient shopping & dining.
- Stephanie (10/5): perfect - location, clean quaint hotel nothing
- Jen (10/5): - Such a cute place for couples to stay!
- Johnathan (7/5): A nice hotel for a short weekend getaway. - Beds are nice, and it's in a fantastic and easy to get to location. The unattached bathroom is weird and unsanitary. No staff onsite, I didn't see any staff members until we checked out.
- Hannah (10/5): Exceptional -
