Guest Reviews
- Michael (10/5): Scenic rambling. - I had a 4 night break to explore the countryside in South Devon and Malborough is close enough to the sea to be able to walk there without needing a car which I wanted and it is near a bus stop so you can go by train which I did.
You can see some of the more out of the way places by foot which are not commercialised and there are plenty of footpaths and lanes to get around.
there are a lot of options for walking and day trips.I had a single room which was economical with a newly refurbished bathroom.
There was some traffic noise as I had a bedroom in the front.
- Alan (4/5): Needs attention!! - Property needs to be cleaner in all areas….
- Philip (2/5): - The business is no longer a going concern, no staff, fire risks, lack of lighting in public areas, on-line advertising is totally misleading (outdated). One has to feel for the poor Landlord trying in vain to keep going.
- Rachel (8/5): - Has everything you need. Great breakfast.
- Laura (8/5): - The landlord was wonderful and willing to go the extra mile for his guests. The room was very comfortable and cosy, complete with a desk and chair. I didn't have a problem with the room's artwork depicting the female form, but I can see why this might not be to everyone's taste! The shower looked modern and worked really well, but no shower gel or shampoo was provided. The one thing that really bugged me was the dodgy Cloud wifi, which was both unsecure and unreliable. Worked ok in the pub but kept dropping out in the room. And I couldn't get it to work at all on my Samsung phone. Although you can park on the road outside, I don't recommend this as the road is quite narrow and frequently used by wide heavy farm machinery. Fortunately there is a free car park by the village hall, less than a 2 minute walk away. Windows were single-glazed so didn't keep the noise out, but the road outside is pretty quiet (apart from said machinery) so it's not really a problem.
- Samantha (2/5): Disgusting Tip! Don’t stay!! - So disgusting we had to walk out, and leave. The photos must be from years ago and under different ownership. The hotel is dated and in a terrible state. Creepy statues, ornaments, and junk-shop items swamp every room. The bed linen smelt damp, like a wet dishcloth, so I couldn’t sleep in the bed. Junk and clutter line the hallways, and it was filthy. I think it is so mis-sold it should be removed from this site as it left me without a hotel at a busy period, and have to cut my trip short. On top of that, the manager was hostile with us for leaving, and we faced one of their regular ‘drinkers’ follow us out and huff and puff at us!
- Carole (6/5): - Nothing
- Lucia (10/5): - Tim and his dog Mowgli were the best hosts! Tim is lovely and nothing was too much of a hassle for him. The rooms are pretty basic but clean, cosy and have a kettle and coffee/tea, etc. I'd recommend staying here!
- michael (4/5): Royal Oak - the room was clean the hotel in general was run down decor/artwork was very quirky and different,host/owner
was pleasant, polite and helpful.
- sarah (2/5): - The property is very bery dated and is nothing like the pictures
- Terrence (6/5): - No hot water to start with, 1 very used bath towel for the whole stay, no hangers
- Andy (10/5): Enjoyable stay at the royal oak pub - Tim was a lovely helpful chap, nice large room with comfortable bed.
Additional towels & loo roll would be useful.
The place had a lively bar with pool table. Location was ideal for travelling around area to some lovely nearby beaches etc.
- Della (2/5): - So discusting could not stay
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The room itself was clean with all the expected facilities, it was also big. However, the areas outside the room stairs and corridor leave a lot to be desired. This is a lively pub so don't expect a quite night before the pub closes.
- Sybil (10/5): Royal Oak. - Very good accommodation. Friendly staff.would recommend.
- james (10/5): Fab. - Great host.
Great pub.
Great food.
Great stay.
Thanks.
- Deborah (8/5): - Just one night stay in this traditional pub. The room was nice and clean and comfortable. Good breakfast was included.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Pleasant, nice breakfast, not sure yet if we have paid twice, will let you know.
- PierreMundell (8/5): - Pub is very old school and unique and full of character to the land lords taste. Room neat and tidy, but some work needed on the entrance to the sleeping quarters. Owner and staff very friendly and helpful.
- Vlada (8/5): - Tim is the most welcoming and funniest b&b owners you will ever meet. We really enjoyed our stay. And location is great! 2 miles away from Salcombe
- anne (6/5): good budget stay - Arrived at 4pm and had to knock on the window to get entry, Good welcome and room okay. All facilities okay but milk cartons were off. Evening meal quite good
- Thomas (4/5): You get what you pay for! - I had read the reviews of this place and, looking at the pictures thought I was stopping in a small, local "gastro pub". On arrival, the young lady was most helpful, as was the owner the next day. The one thing I failed to notice on the web site was the "dog friendly" bit. There is an aroma all around the place, even in the room I stopped in. The room was small and cluttered. It backed on to the beer garden as well, which meant it was noisy until the pub closed. Breakfast was ok. The web site indicates that it was recently refurbished, but there was no sign of this. Some of the images on the web-site are also "stock images". The pub is generally tired looking and in need of some attention.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Host, Great value - Fantastic host, decent room and cracking value. Close to salcombe which is stunning.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Visiting home - Return ’home’ after years away. Tim is a fine host, room was cosy and clean. Eclectic collection of art pieces might not suit everyone but fine for us.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - This was booked for my parents for a short Christmas stay. The room was tiny - far smaller than it appeared on the website. There was rubbish around the stairs. The ‘eclectic’ bedroom was just stained and ramshackle. It was so bad, that they didn’t stay for more than 10 minutes and the owner clearly didn’t care or offer any form of refund. Avoid!!!!

- Verified traveler (8/5): - Looks a bit tired from the outside, but room itself was spacious and clean. Great to be able to bring the dog along. Good walk to Salcombe along a dedicated footpath. Breakfast was great. Overall, excellent value for money.
- PATRICIA (10/5): Good! - Although the room was small, the welcome was big and we enjoyed our stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Eclectic mix of decor in the pub but that made a nice change
A real local pub atmosphere where staff and regulars made us feel very welcome
Food was good quality local produce very well cooked by Tim the owner
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The Royal Oak offers good food and a great atmosphere to have a meal and drink.
Rooms are comfortable and plenty of space.
Well worth a visit.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great value for money, quirky pub with lots of character
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Landlord and staff very friendly really enjoyed our stay
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It is a traditional english pub and the staff is very friendly and relaxed. You won't listen to any noise from the pub as everyone is very polite. 5 minutes driving distance from Salcombe city centre, we just couldn't have asked for more. If it is a clear sky in the evening do not forget to go outside and look for the Milky Way in a dark place. Recommended!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The owner was very helpful and friendly. We really enjoyed staying there and would go back again. Really good value for money.
- C.Paul (4/5): Mixed thoughts - It is difficult to criticise this B&B stay as it was much cheaper than others in the locality.
The pub needs investment to update and greater attention to detail in what is provided!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean room. Great breakfast. Tim, the owner very friendly and helpful.
- Marie (8/5): Good value - Really good value b & b, everything you need for a night away from home. Could have done with a shelf and lock in the bathroom.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Excellent full English breakfast.
Landlord was attentive but didn’t like the furnishings & decoration in the bedroom!
- JAS (8/5): - We had a great time at this quirky pub off the beaten track. Our host went above and beyond to help us out with a booking error (my fault, not theirs!)and was friendly and accommodating throughout our stay. The pub has a lovely little beer garden and is only a short hop from the coast path. Great to find a proper authentic pub with real local character.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Value for money, great atmosphere in the pub in the evening
- Jane (8/5): - The Royal Oak is a locals pub with just three letting bedrooms. We were made very welcome as ‘outsiders’ and it was no trouble to rustle up fish and chips at very short notice. Our room was bigger than we expected with an en-suite shower room and views over the Devon country side. Breakfast was cooked by the landlord to order and was a traditional English breakfast. Free parking in the local village car park was a bonus.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Host very friendly and helpful. Quirky little pub with a nice atmosphere. Room was fresh and clean with on suite. Live music on Saturday night was excellent and provided a great mood. We will definitely go back.
- caroline (10/5): - real old pub lovely landlord good food and clean room
- barry (6/5): cheap, quirky and a real pub stay - ok i am a cheap skate but like to stay in a warm cosy room ,a nice meal and a few drinks- not a "dress for dinner" and examine the bed for a stray hair type of customer!
So the Royal Oak is "quirky" and Tim the ex pop group manager isn't your average publican. He's far more fun and a grafter - but a manager without the means to really tart up the fabric of the building.
The beer is excellent and a full pub on a Friday night testified to that.Ear plugs in the room thoughfully provided suggest it's not a quiet spot!
I elected for the most expensive meal on the limited menu -yes Tim cooks as well- and had a "belly buster" twin cheese burner, chips and salad -about twice the size i could cope with! Bedroom had all the necessaries except an extra blanket (unfortunate as the windows fit where they touch) and an electric rad in the wardrobe needed plugging into a working socket -not the one I chose. It was the coldest night of the year! Breakfast was fine and for £55 i couldn't moan (too much).Would i stay again -yes with the extra blanket though!
- Peter (8/5): - Very friendly local village pub around 200 years old. Nice bar area with log fire and relevant furnishings, cosy and comfortable. Good breakfast and fist class Real ales and beers. Omfortable rooms and good shower rooms. Superb location for access to headland walks and 10 minutes either way to both Salcombe and Hope Cove.
- Phil (10/5): Bargain - Great food and host
- toggy (8/5): Friendly landlord publican, good wholesome food - Friendly relaxed pub, live music on offer. Good food, nice portion size, recent room and felt welcomed
- Mr Paul (8/5): A convenient overnight stop. - Hospitable helpful hosts. Compact, comfortable room. A little shabby but very interesting decor.
- Matt (8/5): Welcoming stay in South Hams - Perfect stay and great value for money in a friendly pub in Marlborough close to Salcombe and beautiful Hope Cove.
The pub offers well kept real ales and a good breakfast to set you up for a day of walking the coastal paths. Well recommended.
- james (10/5): Pleasant and convenient inn near Salcombe - A perfect place to stay for a few nights. Walking distance from Salcombe but away from the busy town. Easy access to lovely countryside
Room was large, airy, light and quiet. No pub noise at all.
Breakfast tasty and served when you want it
- E (6/5): - I have marked this nether good nor bad as I did not stay there. I had booked and paid, but the 'on street' parking was not of a standard I was expecting. So I lost my money and stayed else where.
- Ian (8/5): Very good base for a walking holiday - A nice “local boozer” with rooms. Don’t expect slick hotel levels of decor or fittings but the room had everything, the bed was comfy, shower brilliant and own access without going through the pub.
To be honest, any landlord who has lyrics from a Bob Seger song decorated on the pub wall can’t be all bad eh? He couldn’t do enough for us. Top man.
