- alicefO1595IT (2/5): Rat in the dining room. Avoid this hotel at all costs. - We did not stay at this hotel, but decided to eat here one evening in January. As we were eating our meal, a rat actually ran across the dining room floor and hid behind a pillar. We immediately brought this to the attention of the waitress, who also said she had seen the rat.We left the dining room immediately and also informed reception about the incident.However, a family group were still eating in the restaurant, as we observed staff moving furniture trying to locate the rat. Avoid this hotel at all costs!!
- Navigate48218162762 (10/5): Best revisit! - This was our 3rd hotel stay in 5 days, and our 2nd time returning to Excelsior Ipoh after a year. The lobby may look simple, but the courteous staff and the comfortable, spacious, clean, and well-maintained rooms—complete with a pleasant fragrance—were just as consistent as my last visit. Our group appreciated the well-lit accommodation. Our twin double room came with a well-furnished bathroom featuring a bathtub, stand shower, and rain shower. The buffet breakfast was simple but delicious, complemented by a well-set dining area and attentive staff. The buffet area was constantly maintained, kept neat and pleasant, and the staff were courteous and quick to clear tables. A comfortable stay with good gastronomical delights—truly an experience worth returning for, and the best of my 5-day trip.

- Savvy12345 (10/5): Lovely Stay ! - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wonderful First Stay at Hotel Excelsior Ipoh! This was our first time visiting Ipoh, and Hotel Excelsior truly made it a memorable and pleasant experience for us! From the moment we checked in, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly front desk staff (special thanks to the kind Kak who checked us in with a smile!). The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly our dining experience at the Dulang Coffee House, where Ms. Sumanthi Menon, the manager, went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and well taken care of. Her attention to detail and gracious hospitality stood out. We would also like to thank Mr Hashim and another Encik, the lovely team members at the coffee house who served us so kindly and made every meal enjoyable. The hotel is located in a great spot, within walking distance of many local eateries and shops, which made exploring Ipoh even more convenient. Thank you once again to the entire team at Hotel Excelsior for making us feel so welcome. We hope to return and stay at this lovely hotel again soon!

- Stay28514303254 (8/5): Nice place to stay - The room was clean and had a cozy feel to it. The beds and pillow were comfortable. the check in and check process was smooth. The staff were accommodating and helpful especially one of the front office staff (supervisor or manager) who went out of her way to assist. There was a nice spread for breakfast.
- Sean310 (4/5): Still a Convenient Choice, But Major Improvements Needed - I have stayed at this hotel several times over the years, mainly because of its excellent location right in the heart of Ipoh. It is within walking distance of many famous eateries, shops and local attractions, making it an easy choice when convenience is a priority. However, this most recent stay was unfortunately my most disappointing one to date. Let me start with the check-in experience which was a major letdown. The process was incredibly slow and frustrating. Despite several staff members being present, none seemed to take initiative to assist the guests who were clearly queuing and waiting. Instead, they appeared to be walking around aimlessly without addressing the long line. The check-in system itself is very outdated and overly manual which contributes to the delay. It is 2025 and most hotels now have digital or semi-digital check-in processes that are far more efficient. I genuinely hope the management considers upgrading their system and provides proper training to the front desk staff to improve both speed and customer service awareness. Another consistent issue I have faced over multiple stays is room assignment, specifically regarding bed preference. I always book a king-bedded room but not once have I actually received one. Every time I ask about it, the response is always the same as that king-bedded rooms are reserved for tour group members. This is not only unreasonable but also unfair to other paying guests. It gives the impression that unless you are part of a tour, your preferences will not be honored which I find both ironic and disappointing. For this stay, I was given a superior room with two single beds instead. The room itself was of adequate size and came with the expected basic amenities. However, there were still several noticeable shortcomings. The air-conditioning unit was a major issue as it was far too warm and struggled to cool the room properly, even after several hours of being turned on. This made sleeping at night uncomfortable and certainly affected our overall rest and experience. Additionally, the bathroom, while average in size was missing key items like hand towels and face towels which used to be provided during my previous stays. It is disappointing to see this kind of inconsistency as these are basic items that should come standard in any hotel room. The TV quality was poor with blurry visuals and very limited channel options which shows a lack of upkeep. Then there is the parking situation which continues to be a challenge. The access route to the parking area involves a steep and narrow winding driveway that requires serious maneuvering skills. It’s especially tricky for larger vehicles or inexperienced drivers. Parking here is not just inconvenient but it is actually stressful. Overall, while I have appreciated this hotel’s location in the past, this recent experience has made me seriously reconsider returning. The service levels have declined and the lack of responsiveness and outdated systems are no longer acceptable, especially when better alternatives are becoming available nearby. In fact, I noticed that a newly refurbished large-scale hotel is opening just a five-minute walk away which offers potential guests another option and quite possibly, a better experience. Unless the management takes these issues seriously in upgrading their check-in system, respecting bed preferences, ensuring comfortable room conditions, maintaining amenities and training staff to be more customer-focused, otherwise they risk losing repeat guests like me.

- Shiuling (6/5): Disappointed - I had to go through a lot of hoops to get the room I reserved. They said they could not find my reservation and then said they will upgrade me to a room with one king bed when I specifically requested for two beds. After one hour of waiting and arguing, I got a room with two beds. Then the toilet water was running. The maintenance guys came but did not fix the problem so we ended sleeping with the sound of running water.
- Happiness35211109212 (2/5): Aggressive and Unprofessional Cleaners - Rooms are Kept in Filth - My family and I stayed at this hotel during our trip Ipoh from 28.01.2025 - 30.01.2025, a 2-night stay. We initially intended to extend our trip until 31.01.2025. However, on our second day, the cleaning service was so deplorable that it tainted our second night. On the third day, we were forced to leave because of this. To start with, there were 2 cleaners that entered the room on the 2nd day. One of them was a fair-skinned, Northern Indian boy. This boy was the reason we had to leave. On our first night, my family and I prepared tea and left the cups on the counter. The two cleaners who came in the next day, very reluctantly washed only one of the three used cups. The person who washed the cup was not even this Northern Indian boy. My mother observed this boy shout at the other cleaner for washing this single cup. At the time that this transpired, she did not even realise that only one cup was washed. Around 2pm on our second day in Ipoh, my sister decided to make cups of tea for the three of us. When she removed the cups from the counter, soiled tea bags from two cups fell on to the mat and into my luggage bag, on my clean clothes. It was then that we realised, the Northern Indian cleaner had maliciously put the cups with the soiled tea bags (upside down, to give an appearance of having washed it) as they were, without having washed or replaced them. At this time, I made a call to Housekeeping to alert them of this incident. When the boy returned to help clean the mess that the CLEANERS MADE FOR REASONS UNKNOWN TO US, given that this is a hotel and clean cups SHOULD NOT BE A COMMODITY, HE AGGRESSIVELY BANGED THE DOOR IN AN ATTEMPT TO INTIMIDATE US FOR MAKING A COMPLAINT. Please note that my family and I were all female and this intimidation tactic scared us. Upon entering the room, he rudely and with a heightened tone asked "What happened?", again with words to intimidate. He eventually, very reluctantly vacuumed the spot. We requested that the spot with tea be mopped but he refused, saying that IT NEEDS TO BE DRY FIRST. This is just one of two incidents. The second, and more important note here is that the BATHROOM WAS NOT WASHED. The cleaners simply vacuumed the spot. In my entire life, I have never experienced a hotel this disgusting in terms of hygiene values. As we had already made payment for two nights, we had to stay the night, with the soiled unmopped carpet and the horrendous odour from the bathroom (BECAUSE THE SHOWER DRAIN WAS CLOGGED FROM NOT BEING WASHED). I am now also forced to send all my clothes to laundry because there are tea stains on my brand new washed clothes. On our third day, when we made a complaint to Mr Erwin, he did nothing. When we made our complaint, he was apologetic but later, his tone changed. He became hostile. I am starting to wonder if this hotel is run by thugs. Everyone here takes on a tone of aggression and acts hostile. Perhaps it is because we were a group of women. The air of misogyny was oppressive to say the least.

- Verified traveler (8/5): Short Stay Acceptable - Great staff and complied to my hotel request and the room condition is acceptable for short stay, TV channel connection is terrible and the noise outside the room is not at my acceptable level especially when someone walk passed and talk or closing the hotel room door is pretty loud. Overall is still a pleasant hotel for short stay.

- ColinW2205 (6/5): Comfortable 3-star in excellent location - This is our second stay at this popular (sometimes extremely busy) hotel. The staff members are attentive, and the rooms are fine, although ours could have done with a lick of paint. Front facing rooms are subject to street noise, and a restaurant across the road has live music that doesn't sound that great. The fare in the hotel restaurant is what you'd expect, but there are plenty of kopitiams and cafes a short walk away. In that respect, the location is excellent. The hotel's laundry service is excellent, too. It's an affordable, comfortable stay in the heart of Ipoh.
- Wei (8/5): Old one but good one - It's an older hotel but is clean and comfortable. Close to many restaurants and a few attractions e.g. Concubine Lane. Safe neighbourhood. Can be a bit noisy if opposite restaurant has live music, but this stopped at 10 pm. Delicious breakfast but make sure you confirm at reception you have complimentary breakfast included in your booking, if not written in booking confirmation. We were not told and ate out the first day. Surrounding shops also have nice breakfast. Hotel has free WiFi and parking.

- Sean310 (6/5): Location Wins My Heart - I have stayed at this hotel several times and this hotel will be my first choice whenever I need to travel to Ipoh, whether for business or pleasure. The only reason to contribute to my choice is that the location of the hotel. It is perfectly located in the heart of the city, which is within walking distance to all the famous restaurants. Frankly, this hotel is really outdated and in need of a serious facelift. I noticed that the check-in process is still quite manual, but quick. Had booked the superior room for 2 nights, the room size is adequate and acceptable for 2 people. The king-size bed is excellent and comfortable with lots of amenities that surprised me. The free Wi-Fi connection is not very strong and needs serious upgrading. Guest car park is located on 1-3 floors and requires excellent driving skills to get up to the car park as the winding way to the car park is very intimidating. Also, parking is very limited and you may have to fight for it at weekends. Overall, the location of this hotel won my heart, until I forgave it for being outdated.

Stayed Junior Suite a few times and it's nice with a sitting room with sofas and a tv plus views of the distance mountains. Check-ins are a breeze. Rooms are clean with adequate lightings.

The only thing was at night they had a Karaoke or some sort of party at a lower floor. The sound travelled to the hotel room. But it was a very minor point. Overall, it was a good hotel with the price I paid and made my Ipoh stay great.

- Michael (8/5): Old property with great location - Location was excellent, right in the heart of ipoh. Property is old and obviously dated. Bathroom had been renovated, but shower door could not close, and the ventilation fan was blowing hot air into the bathroom rather than sucking it out. Led to the Aircon condensation dripping in the room. Service staff was very prompt when alerted, and came immediately to clean up. Front desk staff were friendly and attentive.

Room is clean and spacious but wifi is terrible. Breakfast is good but the coffee is “burned”. Overall a good and comfortable stay and frankly exceeded our expectation considering the price and “age” of the hotel.

The cleanliness of the room is not statisfied room is very dusty, non sound proof, i've asked the housekeeping girl which is a malay I would like to ask for things for my room , which she could not hear until I have to repeated my question to her many time which she could not here cause she was listening to earpod, when she could hear it, she answered very rudely and with no manners towards me as a staying guest, then i've asked for her name which is ain . overall my stay in the hotel was ok, during check in was in order , and the food wise is fine.

- hakimacosta (8/5): 40 years and still standing - opened in 1983 and as of 2023, when i wrote this review, the building has been around for 40 years. despite its age, it is still well-maintained, and the staff was very kind and helpful in showing us the local cuisine guide. the room was decent, nothing extraordinary, but there were plenty of toiletries, so all in all, i had a good stay.

- Ling101028 (6/5): Good value hotel but rundown - Location is good but it’s quite rundown. Room used to be comfortable, based on the layout, unfortunately not very well maintained. Corridor towards the room looked dirty and felt dusty. When we settled into our room, we discovered the shower area quickly flooded after showers. The water overflowed and made our bathroom quite messy. We thought drainage was choked but we were told the shower area floor was not well leveled for water to drain properly. We told them we couldn’t stay in that room and live with a flooded bathroom! They moved us to another room. At breakfast table, we found out from our friends that they too have little “flooding problems” in their bathroom but it wasn’t as serious as water drained off quite quickly. So this could mean that the last renovation contractor for this hotel did a terrible job and many guests had to suffer and live with it. Sad… Breakfast buffet offered a fair selection but lack quality. I understand this is a 3-4 stars hotel. But most travelers these days would rather have less choices but higher quality food, example: impress guests with a real good local coffee which is not expensive to provide? First impression counts most! Staff were friendly and responsive but they couldn’t do magic if the hotel itself was rundown.

- Ching Yee (8/5): - The hotel room condition was exceeded our expectation considering the pricing. The location is excellent which is near to many attractions and famous restaurants. However, the live band opposite the hotel was really noisy on Sat night. The noise was continued till past midnight. Other than that, the room was good value for money.

- Koh (4/5): - The room is very down, doors frames are already rotten and cannot be locked for the toilet door also. Did not provide any hand or face towels. Some rooms (we had booked 4 rooms) are choked and water flows very slowly. Poor housekeeping, only tidy up the bed and replenish the used towels, but floors are not vaccum and the rubbish (tissue papers dropped on the floor) still can be found on the floor lying same place after housekeeping. Only good of the hotel is the accessiblities to the nearby places for food and massage.

- Steven (4/5): - I paid RM70 for the deposit when checking in. A dishonest front desk staff insisted that the said sum is paid for the government tax and it is not refundable when checking out. I had a receipt with me to proof the above.

- Verified traveler (2/5): You will regret to stay in this hotel - The only advantage to stay in this hotel is the location it situated. Other than this, I think Motel can be better in turn of room cleanliness, quietness, internet wifi speed, toiletry supplies, house keeping, breakfast quality and choice of foods... If you need to stay in this hotel and thinking of taking breakfast there, I think you should save the money and enjoy breakfast outside rather than eating low quality food inside the hotel. I gave up taking breakfast there after my first BF there though I had paid for it. I had 2 transaction for my credit cards for nothing after checking my credit card notice and hope there cancel those transactions by now.
- Amy (6/5): - This hotel is in good location with walking distance to malls and street food. However, very disappointed with cleanliness. There was a big black shoe imprint on the duvet cover when I lift it up before I went to sleep. One of the towel has a very stinky smell. The hotel definitely needs remodeling. Staff is ok.
- 17wangh (2/5): Terrible Hotel Vacation - This is the worst hotel that I have stayed in my life. Customer service is nonexistent. They are very proud to inform that : 1) the hotel is well-known of no/extremely poor wifi connection 2) live band drumming noise will be up to 2 am as we are in the middle of town 3) very rough toilet paper 4) Poor breakfast choices 5) no hand towel. We can not relax with the noise and do any planning without wifi. This is a zero star hotel. Definitely not a 3 star as claimed by the website.

- Victoria (10/5): - Good location, near to eateries and Ipoh Parade. Strategic location. Room a bit too old. Noisy on Saturday night due to the karaoke in the hotel until 1 am. Recommend to stay there on weekdays which is peaceful and quiet.

- Verified traveler (6/5): Ok stay - Location is ok but informed me that family room only onky level 6 which is very noisy due to pub singing till 12-1am daily. If not the dtay woupd be better. Breakfast is simple.
- Lily (10/5): Nice to stay. - Friendly and good services, well rooms renovated since my last trip in 20 years ago, the con was there was smoking smell when we got to our floor, but the rooms were very clean. Nice location surrounding by shops and restaurants. Worth the price. Highly recommend.

- tombV2497WR (8/5): Convenient Ipoh hotel. - This was a very convenient place to stay in Ipoh. We had to visit to help a friend. The Excelsior did the job. It was clean and tidy. Bathroom etc in good working order. Not far from the station and local restaurants. The staff were helpful. The views from our window impressive. Very good at the price.
