Guest Reviews
- Michael (1/5): -
- Katie (9/5): - The family at Casa Drake are so warm and welcoming and they did everything they could to ensure I had everything I needed and a comfortable stay.
I loved that it’s located a little inland, it’s far more peaceful and right next to the forest :)
I would love to come back.

- Francesca (9/5): Great FB spot for Los Planes! - The location is simply breathtaking surrounded by gardens and Los Planes!
The lodge is simple but complete of everything.
The guests are simply super!
Pick up, assistance and food all at top level We had many problems the first day with water, both for consistence as well as hot option.
The day after we had a shower in the common space of the house. Maybe I would have expected they tried to change the room immediately.

- Mark (8/5): Nice cabin run by lovely, helpful family. - Nice gardens and cabin on edge of jungle. Fantastic host. Zaharia’s even made us breakfast at 5am so we could go on an early morning tour.
- Mona (9/5): A lovely family property with a beautiful waterfall hike nearby and simple home.cooked food. Great f - The people were full of love and generosity. For the double rooms the private bathrooms were downstairs.
- Izabella (8/5): Generally quiet, pleasant stay with a wonderful, kind Costa Rican family. - Generally quiet and off the beaten path; beautiful garden and cabins; family was super helpful and kind. Sometimes the dogs and rooster were very loud and woke us up all night, but that’s part of rural life. The bed was very stiff and it was hard to adjust to at first. Some of the meals made our stomach hurt. And I wish we knew a taxi would cost $20-30 no matter where we went; we thought we had one free ride included per day, and that transportation to and from the house was included.
- Adam (10/5): Great 5 nights in drake bay - I was here for 5 nights oct 7-12 2022, the rainy season.
-Arraigned airport pickup before i arrived. I arrived at airport and they were pulling up as i walked out the door. A very nice man that is the hotel driver, doesnt speak much english, drove me from airport to hotel, about 30-45 min drive depending on road conditions. We had to drive through a river that was not too deep, near airport.
-The hotel was very nice, i was greeted by one of their sons that spoke english, as well as the mother and father who run the business. I paid with visa debit for the stay and cash for the driver.
-Was shown to my cabin/bungalow. It was great, 3/4 sides is screen walls with curtains, a nice big bathroom, looks like brand new wood, 2 nice beds, even live flowers. The cabin has a balcony, with chairs and light, its nice for reading at night, view of surrounding forest/lawn. There is very nice flower bush right outside that humming birds love, you can hear/see a humming bird at least 1 every 10 min. The cabin is a short walk away from the main building, down a garden trail. Nice air flow because of the screens, and there is a ceiling fan too. Many outlets to charge things.
-The food was GREAT. I am a very picky eater, i eat with my eyes (like a bird as my mother said), and i am mostly vegetarian except for some deep fried fish and chicken because it is good, they asked me what i perfered, and altho there was a language barrior as the mother and father dont speak english, they understood my meals and made a effort to give me food i would like. Fresh juice daily.
-Drake bay is about 1 hour walk, with a bridge and one steep hill (the river crossing is only on the way to airport). Its a scenic walk, i did it a few times. Most times it was raining, but still nice. Or the hotel offers drives for a cost. They did tell me that i would get one free transport to and from town per day. This is good stuff still, not bad:
-The hotel arraigned my sierna station hike in the national park, as well as a night walk on the hotel grounds in the forest. We communicated with my google translate app as well as with the english speaking son on whatsapp.
-The bug control was amazing in the rooms. I dont know what they were useing to kill bugs, but i never saw a living bug in the room, they were all dead. I would shower and their would be a dead spider on the sink that wasnt there a few min before. As well as some ants that seem to die as soon as they enter room. It was very reassuring that no giant bugs would get me while i sleep.
-The ride back to the airport was a adventure. The SUV had a flat tire, then a hotel friend picked me up to take me to airport but the river near airport was too high this time, so i had to walk through the river above my waist with hotel driver carrying my luggage across. and then a 3rd vehicle took me to the airport. But i really respect and had a good time with the hotel driver, he stayed with me on beach to make sure i got on the boat for tour, and helped me and carried my luggage across that river. He was great.
-I think everyone in Town knows everyone else.
-when i was sea sick they were accommodating and gave me fruit in my cabin.
The negatives:
-Not really any, There was a bit of a suprise charge when i was leaving because the drive from hotel to beach for the park tour cost money even though i only used the free ride 2 out of 4 days, and they seemed to have planned the pickup to the beach instead of the town so that the ride was not a free ride, the tour left from both places. but they didnt charge me for laundry service.
-There was a power and cell phone outage for a few hours, but that was understandable as there was a big storm here and hurricane just north of costa rica.
- slight lack of english, but i also lack spanish, google translate app to the rescue.
- atalia (8/5): wonerful hospitality - a family business very attentive to our needs
lovely people
- Sylvia (10/5): - They treat you like home! These are great people! Wonderful safe and delicious food!
- JAC (10/5): - The property is beautiful, surrounded by nature and full of peace
- Richard (10/5): Best hotel in Costa Rica bar none - Casa Drake is one of the nicest places I've stayed. The family that owns this place is very niceand welcoming. I enjoyed sitting around and talking to them. They offered us home made authentic Tico breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Each and every meal I had there was awesome. The grounds are very beautiful with various fruit trees and flowers. The cabin we stayed in was great. It had a huge shower, a porch with hamocks, and beautiful and comfortable beds with mesquito netting. They took us on a private tour to the beach on horseback. It was an adventure of a lifetime. I also want to add the security was great as they had an attack rooster who guarded the Grounds well I felt very safe LOL
- Verified traveler (10/5): A great Family stay in OSA - If you are looking for a regular hotel experience then this is not for you, however if you want a true home away from home experience with the local Tico family then you cannot go wrong with this option.
Edward the reservations lead is always present and the kitchen is run by his mom and sister. The dad is the wealth of knowledge about local area and the uncle is the gardener. The abundant fruit trees was a pleasant surprise and so was the close proximity of the Macaws.
- Jason (10/5): Awesome - Great service, wonderful staff. Eduardo and his family will bend over backwards to please guests. I can't imagine coming to Drake Bay and staying anywhere else.
- Tom (8/5): Worth the detour - Wonderful, little family run inn in the middle of nowhere. Very friendly family who will spend time with you if you are so inclined. It's far from Drake Bay, 5.5 km and 20+ minutes from the main beach by taxi. They will go out of their way to make sure you have a memorable experience on the Osa peninsula. If you are on foot, be prepared for long, rewarding walks. Try the horseback riding which is a bargain at US$25 p/p for a half day. Stayed in March, 2015.
- Juan (2/5): I was not satisfied with the value/price - Not what I expected for the price of the room. There are bugs in the room and on the bed. The breakfast is included, but it's not good. The hotel is away from the center of the village. There is no privacy, you can hear your neighbors whispering.
The service provided by the employees is good though, they really try.
There is no information about the shared bathroom.
- Verified traveler (6/5): It's 1:30 hours from the beach, NOT in Drake Bay - Great place but extremely far from anything else and more expensive than places closer to the beach and the Drake town. Good beds and nice food, hot showers :)
- Michael (6/5): Nice but VERY remote! - If Drake Bay is in the "middle of nowhere" then Casa Drake is at th "edge of nowhere". Casa Drake is a beautiful family owned and managed guest house. The family that runs it is very friendly, but doesn't speak a word of English, so you'll need someone in your group who can converse at least a little in Spanish. The house itself is very pretty, with simple dark wood decor. The big problem is its remote location - a 25 minute taxi ride from the town of Drake Bay on a very bumpy dirt road and across a thigh deep river that requires a 4x4 SUV or Pickup to ford. Cost each way into town is about $8 US. Also Drake Bay itself is not accessible by car unless you are driving a 4x4 as you will have to ford 5 rivers. We only made it past 4 in our sedan.
- Elizabeth (6/5): Lovely place BUT tips you should know - Drake Bay in Costa Rica is an incredible place, and the people at Casa Drake are really lovely and caring.
This to be aware of:
- This hotel only accepts cash payments for your board. Having enough USD before you even arrive in Drake Bay is a must. There are no ATMS in the area.
- There are 8 guest rooms that all share 4 bathrooms. 2 bathrooms have cold water showers
- Meals are $USD15 per person. There is no menu, they are homecooked and shared amongst the guests. There are no other nearby options for food. Make the hotel aware in advance if you have allergies or food preferences.
- This is a rural place, its far out of town - 20min taxi ride/$10USD per person. You need to take taxis everywhere, its too far to walk.
- They don't really speak English. You need some basic Spanish.
GOOD:
- They are helpful to arrange tours for you in advance. Take their advice and book through them, it will save you a lot of trouble.
- They really do care for you and really go out of their way to help.
- Their home cooked food is really lovely. Simple, but lovely.
- There are several incredible beaches 15min taxi ride away, and worth the trip.
- There is a lovely space with hammocks for chilling out.
- The rooms all have lovely balconies and you can see amazing birds just outside your window.
- Take their advice, and do the 8 hour tour to Sirena and the Corcovado National Park - it's amazing and worth it.
