Chose it because of proximity to Waterfront Park ferry to Daniel Island, but also has convenient freeway access to drive to island. Reasonably priced self-parking. Nice breakfast included. Couldn’t have enjoyed it more!

It bills itself as a boutique hotel, but I have traveled extensively both domestically and internationally, and this doesn't qualify as a boutique hotel. The breakfast staff was the highlight of our experience. They were friendly, welcoming, and eager to help. I wish I could say the same of some of the front desk and the person who appeared to be the daytime or desk manager. The breakfast food itself left a lot to be desired.

It was a short walk for everywhere we wanted to go, and the price was very appealing compared to other downtown hotels. We had a couple small issues that were quickly fixed. The rooftop terrace was nice for relaxing at the end of the night, and a few times we were the only people there. Would stay here again if we make another trip to Charleston.

JFKOT (10/5): Exceptional Hospitality & Perfect Location - We had a fantastic stay at The Ansonborough, and the property itself is beautiful, but it was the team—specifically the General Manager, Jennifer—who truly made our visit memorable. My partner and I were there celebrating his birthday, and Jennifer went out of her way to make him feel special. It’s clear she loves what she does; she is a massive asset to this hotel and a master of hospitality. While we ran into a few minor hiccups during our stay, she addressed every single one of them immediately and to our full satisfaction. Her warmth and kindness really set the tone for the entire experience. What really touched us, though, was the kindness the team showed regarding our pup, Henry. He was supposed to join us for his last vacation, but unfortunately, he didn’t make the trip. Arriving to a thoughtful toast in his honor was an incredible gesture that meant the world to us after a very difficult week. That level of empathy is so rare these days. The suite was comfortable and has a great aesthetic, though a small tweak could make it even better—specifically adding a dresser for those of us who like to unpack. Overall, we left feeling genuinely welcomed and cared for. If you’re looking for a place where the staff actually remembers your name and treats you like a guest in their home, this is the place. These are your people.

Z3404HSdonf (10/5): Unique Hotel Short Walks to Shopping and Dining - Our stay at the Ansonborough was great! The location was very convenient even if not right in the middle of everything. Not the most pretty section of the city given there is a more industrial area and big empty parking lot right behind the building. It was a quick walk to King St during the day and a similar quick walk down along East Bay Street to many of the most popular restaurants and bars in the city. Our room was very large and well appointed. The only thing I would change about our room was the location. We were directly outside the lobby and front desk and during the day we could hear the lobby activity, which was unusual and a little inconvenient. The bar is very small but very nice and the rooftop patio was a nice spot to sit and relax. The staff was excellent and very helpful.

240keriw (10/5): Beautiful, Walkable City - I had zero expectations of this city, and my only requirement was that the city was walkable. It is definitely walkable and I dont think I would even want to try driving. People drive fast and the sidewalks are kind of small. There are a plethora of fun shops and food options. The architecture throughout the entire city is beautiful and the rich history of the city is interesting. The churches and graveyards are tourable if the gates are open and are a must see! The provost dungeon was a neat and interesting tour. Palmetto Carriage Works (The Big Red Barn tours) is a family owned horse-carriage tour company (family owned) and was my favorite part of my stay.

It gave us each our own space and bathroom and a little bit of privacy when needed. The hotel was gorgeous and the rooms were so spacious. The staff was outstanding, very friendly and helpful. We also loved the location, a short walk from the Charleston City Market. As a plus, there’s a huge Harris Teeter across the street so you can grab snacks and drinks for your room if you want! We would love to stay here again. Highly recommend!

JohnT6519 (6/5): Mixed experience - The Ansonborough Inn is located at the intersection of E Bay St & Hassell. E Bay St is 4 lanes and heavily traveled throughout the day. Our room was on the ground floor facing E Bay St. The traffic could be heard from 6 a.m. to midnight. If you open the shutters, you will be looking out at pedestrians and motorists at eye level. When we asked about the noise, the response was "We can't do anything about it". True enough, but not much empathy. We were offered ear plugs. The room was spacious and clean with daily service to change towels. The bed was comfortable. There was no additional blanket or pillows (only what was on the bed). There's ample storage for clothes in drawers and the closet. The bedside lighting is good. The one chair in the room is uncomfortable because it has a very deep seat. Don't bother to have breakfast, as the offerings are minimal & the space is poorly designed. Scrambled eggs were from a mix, just what you'd get at mass-market motels at much lower prices. Oatmeal was available...but there were no bowls or spoons. Dining space is quite limited: only 1 table with 6 chairs. Otherwise, you can be seated on a couch with cocktail tables to eat breakfast. We stayed at an earlier incarnation of the Ansonborough in 2018, before it was renovated and the prices increased substantially. The room was away from E. Bay Street, with more "rustic" decor that was still very nice. Breakfast AND an afternoon social hour were included in the price. The breakfast/social area had multiple tables with chairs, so you could eat breakfast as a meal, rather than as a grab-and-go. Staff were very friendly and accommodating in 2028. We would have been wise to look at online reviews before booking, because these same issues came up in other reviews over several years.

We had a King suite with a lovely large living space which was great for gathering. I had looked at many hotels before picking this one. 185renag (10/5): Comfortable and Uplifting Vibe - I love this hotel and will recommend it to anyone visiting Charleston. First of all, check in was so quick and simple with free parking. I parked, checked in, and got up to my room within a couple of minutes. Front desk staff was so friendly and gave me a token for a free welcome drink at the bar. Next, I love the spaciousness of the room, which is actually more like a loft, with its soaring high ceiling, exposed wood beams, white painted exposed brick wall, and a modern kitchenette. Very cool decor that evokes relaxation while also uplifting the mood. I loved the uniqueness of a huge warehouse converted into a modern hotel.
alsD683YK (10/5): Very nice stay - I chose our stay in Charleston, based on the French Quarter location, The Ansonborough listings photographs and pricing. Unfortunately the 2026 historic winter Ice Storm “Fern’ spanning across much of the country prevented us from visiting the surrounding areas, but the photos of the Inn were spot on. Thie interior of the building was amazing, the room was very spacious and gorgeous. The building’s exposed exterior painted brick walls and massive wood Post and Beam construction with era style woodwork just tells a person that this is just not another over night stay, but a relaxing welcoming. Our booking app provided us with a complimentary cocktail coupon and to our surprise The Ansonborough did the same, buy way of a symbolic George Anson poker chip. We certainly took advantage of the offering especially after an 8-hour drive, at the Inn’s small but quaint bar. Outside dinning is a moderate walk. There is a light breakfast bar provided and checkout is by noon. There is a small refrigerator in the room, bottled water, no microwave. Parking across the street with limited parking along the Inn. Highly recommend The Ansonborough.
gpeterfy (10/5): Perfect Anniversary Stay in Charleston - We stayed at The Ansonborough to celebrate our anniversary and couldn’t have been happier with our choice. We booked a Luxury King room (just a step up from the standard, I believe), and the room itself was fantastic. Clean, comfortable, and exactly what we were hoping for on a long weekend getaway in Charleston. The hotel also accommodated an early check-in for a small fee, which was much appreciated after an early travel day. The welcome cocktail was delicious, and breakfast each morning was excellent with plenty of options: breads, yogurt, waffles, eggs, bacon and sausage, oatmeal, fresh fruit, juices, and a solid coffee bar. The location is another big win. It’s right next to a Harris Teeter if you need anything, and only a short 3–4 block walk from the main strip. Close enough to enjoy everything Charleston has to offer, but far enough away to stay quiet and relaxed at night. The only minor issue we had was a small shower leak that got some water on the floor, something that could easily be fixed with a line of caulk. Otherwise, the hotel was beautiful and well maintained. We would absolutely stay here again if we find ourselves back in Charleston.

Parking is conveniently located across the street. We enjoyed eating lunch, that we purchased across the street at Harris Teeter, on rooftop one day. The breakfast offerings are small, but delicious. It changed a little each day which was nice. Honestly, I prefer the way The Ansonborough does breakfast with fewer, high-quality items, then the chain hotels offerings of a greater variety, but lower quality. One complaint about breakfast, please add jelly to the offerings. I would have loved some jelly on my toast. If I should ever find myself back in Charleston, I would definitely stay here again.

kckirk56 (2/5): Terrible Service & Complete Lack of Empathy - We had reservations for three nights at The Ansonborough Hotel in Charleston, SC, but canceled after one of the most disappointing customer service experiences we’ve ever encountered. We called 24 hours ahead of the cancellation deadline to ask for a small extension - simply one extra day to determine if travel would be possible. I recently had cancer removal surgery and was waiting for my doctor’s clearance to travel. The woman we spoke with said she’d check with her manager and have them call us back. No one ever called. When we followed up the next day, we spoke with Carrie at the front desk. She had no record of our prior call or request and immediately told us to contact Expedia, which made no sense since we were asking about the hotel’s own cancellation policy. Only after pressing her several times did she acknowledge this. She said she’d have her manager call us back - yet again - but couldn’t even answer a simple question about what time the 72-hour cancellation window closed. For a front desk employee not to know that is unbelievable. We explained multiple times that the clock was ticking (it was already 2:30pm EST, and we believed the 72-hour mark was 3pm EST), but she showed zero urgency or empathy. Her tone was rude, dismissive, and defensive, and she made it seem like the situation was entirely our fault. Having just come out of surgery, I was stunned at the complete lack of compassion or professionalism. Ultimately, we decided to cancel our stay altogether - because if this is how the staff treats guests before even arriving, we could only imagine what kind of experience awaited us in person. This interaction left a lasting bad impression. We will never stay at The Ansonborough Hotel again and strongly urge others to avoid it if you expect even basic courtesy or competence.
Fearless754245 (4/5): Beauty can be deceiving... - The location for my planned events was good. The atmosphere of the hotel was calm. The room was beautiful but not equipped to serve as a suite: first night the fireplace was inoperable with no kitchen supplies or tableware. Upon requesting for the tableware to eat what we purchased, the desk clerk insisted telling me the kitchen was closed and she could only provide a spoon and fork. Upon sending my Father to retrieve the tableware she provided the plates I initially asked for. Why the resistance? I requested half off my first night for non working amenities, dismissive service, and the room simply not being equipped as a suite is expected to be but half of half was granted. Not really customer focused here, at least in my experience but morning staff are friendly.
Francophile232 (10/5): Go here. Now. - The Vermont Bicycle Tour that I signed up for booked us in this hotel. It was wonderful! I have already recommended it to some friends. Great Location, beautiful building and excellent service and hospitality. My room was huge! I also liked the radio with ambient noise options for restful sleep.
849jamis (8/5): Beautiful hotel, great location, and exceptional staff! - We truly enjoyed 2 out of our 3 nights here. This is a charming, historic hotel with plenty of character—but as expected, the walls are thin, so there isn’t much of a sound barrier between rooms. Unfortunately, on our final night, a guest checked in with a dog that was left unattended. The dog barked loudly and continuously for hours, well past 11:00 p.m., which made it difficult to rest. Other than that experience, everything else about the stay was wonderful—great service, friendly staff, and a perfect location.

The room was large, clean and very comfortable. The rooftop area was very nice, but it was a little rainy and chilly, so I did not get to spend much time there. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel.

jrolenaitis (6/5): Comfortable Charleston charm, great location - Quaint, spacious, well-appointed rooms with vintage charm, many which surround a dramatic central atrium, though the noise travels just as effectively from the lobby. A fantastic location where you can comfortably walk anywhere in downtown Charleston (weather permitting). Don't expect any views from your room (except of Harris Teeter next door), but rooftop has a peek at the harbor. Cleanliness of rooms could be better and we had trouble with sinks draining slowly and water pressure. Service was hit or miss- we had some exceptional interactions and a few clueless or borderline rude ones. Check your folio carefully as I did have to call later to correct overcharges.
STANTONSEE (2/5): NEVER AGAIN - We have stayed here many times before but the last was awful.. the rooms cleanliness was horrible. Rugs were filthy… the breakfast was mediocre and the prices were high. Not what it used to be
lucycsteppe (4/5): It’s a no after 16 years of reservations- - We have stayed here often through the years (16). Found many things currently lacking that the large room and fireplace don’t make up for. It’s a 5 minute wait for hot water with no pressure to take a shower. No robes, slippers or make up mirror in bathroom. Breakfast is pitiful. Their best is a packaged waffle. Two of our lights overhead in the dressing and den area didn’t work. They were obviously not wired. The plugs on the lamps and near the bathroom mirror were barely accessible and didn’t accommodate the ability to plug two things in at a time. We were really disappointed and doubt we will return.

All 3 days, eggs very overcooked (dry), bacon very greasy, yogurt containers floating in water. Foods were not replenished in a timely way. Very little choice. Sue (9/5): The facility and room were lovely! Staff was excellent! Drawback was the kitchen area in the room. - I thought Tammy made an excellent breakfast! The 1st day of our stay did not include any eggs, only oatmeal & potatoes (in addition to bread, yogurt, fruit & juices) because her store order did not arrive, but breakfast for the rest of our stay was great! Tammy’s bacon was out of this world! Loved our room but didn’t understand why there was a large kitchen…..and it was not stocked, other than a Keurig & fridge! No microwave, no utensils at all, no dish soap, dish towel, no paper towels or plates of any kind. It was bare! You couldn’t even bring home leftovers from dinner and heat them up, let alone have a knife, fork or spoon! I felt that was a major flaw with our stay. However, everything else was very good!

Charles (10/5): - Our first experience in Charleston and we couldn’t have been happier choosing the Ansonborough for our accommodations! From the especially warm greeting from Carrie at the front desk giving us a detailed guide of great spots to see to enjoying a welcome “refreshment” at the bar and friendly conversation with Josh, the Ansonborough really made us feel like welcome guests! Such a beautiful location with luxurious style and truly amazing people! Thank you so much and hope to return again soon!
Michael (10/5): - Beautiful facility and just an overall comfortable setting. In the heart of the historic downtown, just a few minutes walk from all the great restaurants Charleston has to offer. There's even a grocery store right next door, so we bought a few bottles of wine and enjoyed them in the room. The staff was extremely helpful and pleasant. Every employee we made contact with treated us like they appreciated that we were there!
