Guest Reviews
- Ognjen (8/5): - The property was spacious, especially for Japan standards. Comfortable for 4 people with plenty of room to dry the ski clothes.
It has two aircons and a gas heater plus the mini heater in the bathroom. Plus the fireplace which you can purchase the firewood for at the reception.
All in all It’s nothing fancy but not bad.
The free Goryu ski bus stops at a nearby property, around 150m away which will take you to the Escal plaza and the ski lifts. Ask the staff for the bus schedule. The kitchen is quite poor and barely has the essentials. If the owners invested one day worth of rent and purchased a few more things it would be so much better. It literally has two large plates, two small plates, 4 forks, 2 knives, one small pot and one frying pan. The fridge is tiny.
- Nat (10/5): -
- HIROYUKI (9/5): -
- Rachael (4/5): Was a roof over head but would not return again. - The location was close to the slopes and there was a lot of space in the villa. Unfortunately we were freezing 🥶
Insufficient heating and you MUST use the fire place to stay warm at night or you will freeze but you have to pay for firewood $15 aud per tiny bundle that you would use within one night. The air-conditioning units did not go to hot level and would not heat the rooms. The gas heater would self time and turn off leaving you cold at night. Be prepared to spend $$ to stay warm. Tip: we found Snow Peak store had fire wood for half the price than they sell at reception.
It was noisy at night with the airconditioner outlets right next to the bedroom!! Take ear plugs. Insufficient kitchenware only 2 of each thing in a 4 bed house. Not user friendly kitchen. English speakers, take a translator ap as the instructions are all japanese (as you may expect in Japan but everyone we spoke to staying there were English speaking tourists)
Big stink bug infestation! A roll of sticky tape is provided to trap them and out them in the bin.
I would not stay here again
- Tyler (5/5): - It was spacious, good shower pressure and the fire was nice. The location was not close to grocery or convenient stores, no restaurant or food options aside from 10 minute walk minimum, very cold in unit, beds and pillows extremely uncomfortable, no extra pillows available, no coffee or tea provided.
- John (5/5): Dated summer cabin without adequate heat, rented at high prices to tourists in the winter. - Two levels Only a single space heater - you can see your breath inside it’s so cold.
Only sink is bathroom one. Hard to even make coffee.
- ciara (7/5): - Spacious accom and good for large groups. There was 15 of us staying across 4 cottages. Basic amenities but if you’re planning on skiing all day it’s not a problem As I said basic amenities in kitchen especially and took a while for the cottages to heat up when you first arrive
- Holland (6/5): -
- Vy (7/5): - The location was fantastic... walking distance 800m to ski slopes The staff were not very helpful... at times they can't be bothered to help us.
- Clarissa (6/5): Great location but needs a face-lift. - The location was very close to Goryu Ski Slope and Escal Plaza. You can walk or catch the shuttle.
The cottage was very spacious and clean.
The staff were accommodating with our queries and helped us with our transfer back to Hakuba station. The facilities were dated and needs a face-lift especially the bathroom.
As the cottage was so spacious, it took a long time to heat. The tatami room didn't have a heater.
- Joan (4/5): Wouldn’t come back again - It was very spacious. However the house was very cold with poor heating and it wasn’t very clean. It’s a far walk from the plaza/village and has no restaurants nearby. There were strangely a lot of stink bugs in the house. And a weird musky smell when we entered the property. One of the pillows had a blood stain on it and the futons wasn’t clean
- Peter (4/5): Budget accommodation with no frills and no support from staff. Would not recommend without a private vehicle - Reasonably priced, the property and appliances were functional but not well maintained. The property was close to a free shuttle to Goryu Escal Plaza Staff were unhelpful and transport options were very limited. Hard to keep the rooms warm and the heating was very loud.
- Chloe (9/5): -
- Josh (1/5): Just don't. Do yourself a favor and find another place. - I didn't like anything. Didn't like anything. This place is dirty, bathroom is moldy, verrryyyy cold - the front door didn't even have a weather seal so winter drafted right inside. Small space heater, 2 wall units that didn't really get warm and the floor, was like a sheet of ice and the smell of sewage was ridiculous. Also, capacity 4, but only 2 plates, 2 bowls? Advertised full kitchen, it only has a small fridge, sink and one hot plate basically worthless except for a single cook but only has one small fry pan and one small kettle. Absolutely not worth the money charged.
- John (9/5): Great time to stay - Location to the ski slopes. Wish the kitchen was a little bigger to handle a family of 4.
- Marcel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kim (7/5): Good -
- Ciara (10/5): - A beautiful tucked away spot in Hakuba! The surrounding forest was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the main resorts. About 15min walk to Goryu or they can take you in the shuttle. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and accommodated for, also a lovely spot focusing around keeping your dogs happy and taken care of. Spacious cabin feel and a decent restaurant with some nice options :) I would recommend this to anyone visiting in the winter or summer
- Larkins (3/5): Poor - Our accomodations were not worth the value. The free shuttle service was highly inconvenient and the transit system throughout the valley was a nightmare. The villa was freezing, uncomfortable, and minimally stocked. We were disappointed that we selected this place for our ski trip.
- Feiyu (7/5): Quiet and spacious, friendly staff, dated facilities and no tableware - Very Spacious, very quiet. Shuttle to Escal Plaza in the morning is fairly good as we are the starting station - you do need to remember there is only one shuttle from Fenice at 8:30 only though. Dining and breakfast are convenient when don't feel like going out. Parking at your own front door if you have a car. The staff were friendly。 Overall the property is really old. You can see it was renovated to a high standard maybe 30 years ago but everything is showing old age. Sofas no longer bouncy, TV is really old and dated, microwaves is old and really weak (took much longer than a normal microwave to heat things up), even the kettle is real old. It comes with a kitchenette with a hotplate but the place provide no cooking ware, no plates, no bowls, no really cutleries, not even a real cup / mug what so ever. All there were a few disposable plastic cups...
We were told when we checked in that they can send us to "near by station" upon check out, however when we try to schedule a drop off we were told they only would take us to Goryu station, not Escal plaza, not Happo One terminal. I wish they have stated it clear to avoid disappointment.
We tried to communicate through booking but never got any response, they use whatsapp but before we even find the hotel to check in the booking message are the only way to communicate.
- Kai (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lesley (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lara (5/5): If you are only planning to ski at Goryu and Hakuba 46 this the location of this property is fine. Otherwise you need to - It was warm and the beds were comfortable. The bath was great after a day skiing. There was a free shuttle bus to Goryu each morning. We had to ask for basic cooking utensils, plates, cutlery, glasses. The nearest convenience store was at Escal Plaza.
- Senran (10/5): Exceptional - The staff is wonderful, introduced the cottage and all the services very well and found my missing GoPro! (unfortunately I lost my little pink crab plushie on the last day..) free bus to the goryu plaza and back, the food is great, also like the fireplace and the bathtub in the cottage. Could have a few wall hangers for towels in the bathroom, and would be great if offer return bus to the nearest convenience store.
- Kathy (2/5): Don’t stay here in winter. Not a good base for skiing - Affordable Staff were very unhelpful. The heating did not work effectively and so it was very cold in winter and some of the air-conditioners did not work at all. When asked the staff said “that’s why the property is cheap, buy wood for the fire. The property is very remote and no easy way to get to and from shops or restaurants.
- David (7/5): Good value for snow accommodation - Location was convenient and next to the main Echoland a area. Central to most mountains. Property is fairly dated however serves its purpose and is representative of its price. Would be nice if the property supplied pots and pans to make use of the kitchen
- Yu (10/5): Nice cottage with plenty of space and value for money - Check in is very quick and easy. The cottage is warm and comfortable. It’s very clean but not spotless which is understandable provided the big size of the cottage. Overall I’m very satisfy with my stay in Fenice Hotel. The location is great as well, very close to main road and only 5-10 mins drive to supermarket and restaurants. One of the split system isn’t working, but the gas heater is sufficient enough to keep the lounge warm.
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional - The property was in a great location in Hakuba close the the Goryu ski resort. The property had a great restaurant attached and had parking directly outside the cottage. The entrance to the villa was not shovelled and meant we had to climb a mountain of snow to get to the front door.
- Jonathon (10/5): Exceptional - The size of the cottage was amazing. The staff were amazing and more than helpful. A really beautiful spot. Transportation in the town is a bit limited, no taxis to speak of when we went. But the shuttle was convenient.
- Jin (10/5): Exceptional - great location,good value
- Barend (9/5): Great spot for a few days with beautiful scenery and great eateries in the area. Gorgeous place and surroundings. Ski sl - Location and the friendly staff. Awesome fireplace. No sink/basin in the ‘kitchen’. Very expensive firewood. Ramen and hamburgers the only choice at restaurant
- Chris (7/5): As advertised. Very quiet as ski season had more or less finished. Would recommend. - N/A An upstairs toilet.
- Darren (8/5): Great value, friendly staff, and conveniently located to ski slopes - The accommodation is a complex consisting of a main reception and restaurant area and maybe a dozen cottages set in a duplex configuration of two cottages per block.
I was originally concerned about the condition of this pet friendly establishment; however, the cottage was spacious, comfortable and clean; albeit a little bland, without a hint of a smell or fur from pets.
Very friendly and helpful staff who dropped us off at the supermarket, laundry, restaurants, and the more touristy areas such as Echoland provided we gave them some notice ahead of time.
There is a nice restaurant located on site which serves delicious daily set Japanese menus and a fabulous local restaurant called Yukimaru only 10 minutes walk down to the main road, but be sure to book.
Escal Plaza base station is a 12-15 minute walk up the hill where you can buy lift tickets, hire ski/snowboard equipment, and get some food. There was a free 8:30am ski bus outside the cottages, but I enjoyed leaving a little later and walking to the lifts.
You can leave your skis in a locker at the base station, but you need to take your boots with you. There are also lockers for walking shoes so you can walk up carrying you ski boots and leave your walking shoes in the lockers whilst skiing.
The cottage is well located for skiing the Hakuba 47 area, but can feel a little isolated when it comes to entertainment, but this was off-set somewhat by the staff' willingness to drop us off at various locations and venues on request where we caught a taxi back if necessary. The bus from Nagano dropped us off on the main road with no shops open on the Sunday we arrived, no taxis in sight and no way of calling the owner as we had trouble using our Australian phones on the local network, so ensure to organise a pick-up time with the owner. as we were strolling the empty road for hours before we managed to get a local make a call for us.
The cottage is a bit distant from any entertainment areas, so a car would be helpful, or you can rely on the staff to assist with transport.
The furniture is a bit tired and on the lower quality side, but the price represented great value and was still comfortable.
- Kim (8/5): I’d come back. Good value for money. - Good location if you have a car. Staff clear snow for accessibility when it snows heavily. Good heating facilities. Beds were good. 5 minutes drive to Goryu and 47 ski fields. No washing machine facilities at all.
Lack of kitchen equipment.
- Andrea (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jerry (9/5): Value for price, great staff. Some struggles with understanding the controls and instructions in Jap - Cosy and clean cottage space to our family. 2 story, 2 room which could comfortable sleep 4. Convenient parking. Extremely friendly staff although communications can be challenging at time. All inclusive with working heaters, fridge, kettle. Had to ask for utensils that were free but not automatically provided. Instructions for appliances/remote control were all in Japanese. Would have been extremely useful if someone could make a laminated sheet with the translation in English and leave it in the house/accommodation
- Jake (5/5): If not the location would be very unhappy! Hard to dry clothing in living room, only single beds, not doubles! - 600 Meters from GORYU! So close u can board home 4 Lunchtime! The Wood FirePlace was broken, the vent was u able to be closed fire wood burn very quickly spent money in 2 loads of fire wood before they told me that not only fire place not working but also the main heater in bathroom that must double as dry room broken, not work!! Otherwise Great older style ACC!
- Alana (10/5): Great hotel with amazing staff. Highly recommend to those travelling to Hakuba. - The cottage was very spacious and provided great amenities. The staff were very good, super helpful and provided a lot of useful information. The shuttle bus service to the snow slopes was very convenient and the staff provided great service including drop off and pick up from the main town in Hakuba. The hotel restaurant was also very good.
- Salah (10/5): The best place to stay in Hakuba - The customer service is beyond excellent. All staff were amazing specially Ray. They helped pick up and drop offs to supermarkets and bus stop.
- Jackson (10/5): Exceptional - Great spot, staff were amazing, short free shuttle bus to and from ski slopes, dinner was great
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Koushik (10/5): Luxury stay at Hakuba - Hakuba is our family ski place and to be blessed with an entire place to ourselves was simply a delight esp after a day of skiing. We will definitely stay here again. The staff were so friendly and the amenities were up to date. The bedroom really made it for us. So so comfortable and warm. The windows in the house looking out to the magic of snow is priceless. Thankyou so much!
- Susan (8/5): A great place to stay with dogs middle in the nature - Very good wifi and well assorted dog‘s amenities.
Heater is very good as well The beds could be better (it‘s too soft)
- Duangkamol (10/5): Exceptional -
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): -

It is very intimate
