- Tom (8/5): - Staff, location. Great old inn.
- Ruth (8/5): Super convenient location, free safe parking, charm factor. -
- Carla (9/5): -
- Gay (8/5): It’s a lovely place and we would definitely stay again - Location is great, easy walking to lots of restaurants and shops and theater. The building itself is beautiful. There are two sitting rooms in the lobby, one has a lovely fireplace in it. There is a fun little bar and lounge on the lower level. The staff was friendly and helpful. The bedroom we were in had no dresser or counter or table that you could use to put your clothes or suitcase on. There was one suitcase rack in the closet. We needed to have two to both be able to live out of our suitcases without putting them on the floor. But it would’ve been much better to have a dresser or even a table to put our packing cubes or suitcases up on.

- Kristi (9/5): -
- Linda (7/5): The location was really great. We were able to walk all around the area. - It was quaint and the common rooms were very comfortable and inviting. The room was very dark. Especially the bathroom and the bed had deep dips in it.
- kathleen (5/5): -
- Megan (8/5): -
- Portia (9/5): I enjoyed my stay very much. Very clean and good breakfast options - Good breakfast options and nice atmosphere A fly found its way into my room (202). Maybe through the small opening on the bottom right edge of the AC unit
- Kenneth (4/5): Great location , breakfast not good. Dust everywhere. - Location is great, breakfast is not good Cleaner room for one, dust everywhere
- Craig (5/5): - Fire alarm ruined the night
Shoved outside in the rain
- Kathryn (9/5): Highly recommend staying—one of the quaintest places we’ve ever stayed! - Perfectly located and very quaint! The breakfast was European-style (which we love), and the bar and other common rooms are cozy and inviting. The staff was delightful, and the room very comfortable. The TV wouldn’t connect to wifi/service for us to stream, and the people staying above us sounded like they were bowling for a good portion of the evening. The temperature was also very warm and the thermostat didn’t really seem to change anything (but we did open the window to let in cold air for a bit…just couldn’t leave it open because it was immediately above the hotel / guest entrance). For what it’s worth, these were actually VERY small issues and we hope to come back soon and truly wish our stay could’ve been longer!
- Clay (9/5): -
- David (10/5): Perfect! - Love the stately decor, they do a fabulous job with the breakfast and also love the pub lounge
- Ieva (9/5): Amazing Staff and Perfect Walkable Location - Great stay! The hotel is in a very walkable area, making it easy to explore nearby shops and restaurants. The staff were incredibly helpful and even provided us with an upgrade, which made our visit extra special. Breakfast didn’t have many options
- Shaun (8/5): Old but Quant, staff friendly and overall a pleasant stay. - Breakfast was limited in choice, but very nice. Location perfect. Room Cleanliness on arrival
- JEN HUNG (10/5): -
- Paul (9/5): Great place located in the heart of the Historic District. Within walking distance to Town. - for a Continental Breakfast it was good.
- Deborah (10/5): -
- Susan (10/5): Wonderful - Breakfast was good. Speak easy had limited choices .It was suppose to be open Fri night and wasn’t..
- Mary (9/5): -
- nancy (4/5): Nice staff. A disappointing stay - The staff is very nice. The location is very good. It’s nice to have parking at the hotel. I did not find it to be an inviting space. It is very dark. The room was very dark. It was hard to read. It wasn’t the cleanest of spaces either. In my room, I found two pieces of trash on the floor. I thought it would be shabby chic, but it was just shabby. Sorry to say.
- Jennifer (9/5): -
- Melinda (9/5): -
- Graham (9/5): Lovely spot to stay in Portsmouth - Very warm and cozy hotel. Two comfortable sitting rooms with fireplaces to relax. Good breakfast and coffee available throughout the day.
- Judy (5/5): - The room we stated in seemed like it had been recently updated. It was a nice old home but need some repairs. The furniture in the main areas need to be replaced. I understand that the owner was going for the eclectic look but everything looked completely worn out. I did not feel comfortable sitting on any of the furniture in the commons area. I expected the more for the amount they charged per night.
- Gooden (9/5): -
- Tom (6/5): - It was nice and quaint hotel. Good breakfast. Elevators were not working and we are elderly. I think they have not been working for some time and I think they should advertise that. It would have made a difference where we stayed.
- Susan (4/5): It was deceptive to withhold the fact that the elevator was inoperative until after the last day to cancel the reservati - Location
Room size
Parking Site chosen based on an elevator due to mobility issues and heart issue with people in both rooms. Informed the day after the last day to cancel that the elevator is broken. Found out the elevator has been out of service for at least six weeks. This significant information was withheld until after the cancellation date.
Common areas were very dusty and haven’t been cleaned.
Claiming to have a bar is an overstatement. Some staff had no idea what was available.
On check-in one room had trash in the room that had not been emptied from the previous guest.
“Light housekeeping” consisted of drop off of towels.
Based on the above, I would not recommend this hotel.
- Erin (5/5): The hotel was in a great location. Very historic building. The elevator was not working. I loved the concept of having a - Location was very good The beds were uncomfortable and worn. The rooms showed signs of wear.
- Roy (7/5): OK for a night but won’t stay there again. - Location was good. Staff are nice. The breakfast was satisfactory. Dripping shower. Could use a soap at the sink instead of going into the shower to pull the body cleanser. Lighting in the bathroom was poor. It’s a quirky and eccentric property, which is fine. How to get used to the noise in LED lights of the freestanding air conditioner in the middle of the room. The elevator was out of service
- Robert S (2/5): - The breakfast was good Not snuff room here to list, start with not telling us elevator not working till 2 days b4 when it was out for at least a month. Never made bed in 4 days, housekeeping was almost non existent. On arrival in room waste basket was full.
- Claire (8/5): - Parking area was safe. Location was near shops and restaurants and library
- Melinda (8/5): -
- Alyssa (10/5): - This place was so charming and full of character. Every staff member I met was very friendly. Check in was smooth.. my room was very unique and comfortable. This hotel is also in the perfect proximity to walk around town. Definitely would recommend!
- Marlene (8/5): Worth the trip, but you may not sleep well. - Good location, nice staff, pretty hotel with interesting decor. The bed was very, very uncomfortable, lumpy and uneven
- ubsil (8/5): -
- Courtney (10/5): - Beautiful property with amazing rooms! Close to everything we wanted to do in Portsmouth.
- Robert (10/5): - Great place on Portsmouth, nice there is parking
- Debbie (10/5): - beautiful property free parking ideal location
- Alex (9/5): Eintauchen in die Geschichte - Hotel mit antikem Charme und trotzdem modernem Komfort. Frühstück vielfältig. Klimaanlage sehr laut
- Jay (8/5): - The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The bed was very comfortable. The room was a decent size. However, the hotel and rooms need some maintenance.
- Christiana (6/5): - Not what we expected. Rooms were older and hotel understaffed. No TV available without a streaming subscription. Had to have the hotel front desk help us watch Monday Night Football. Elevator was out of service.
- Marco (7/5): -
- Heather (9/5): Excellent location and hotel, really beautifully decorated. Free, plentiful parking at back of hotel - The location is excellent and it has free on-site parking – we were also able to park up before check-in as we were keen to visit the Strawberry Banke Museum before it closed (its shut on Tuesdays).
Staff kept our bags at reception (to be honest, New England is safe enough for you to keep items in your car) and we checked in later on. Our room was up a few floors but we're fit enough!
The room was beautiful and had the best chair – one of those snuggle chairs with a footstool – which I just love for reading. Bathroom was spotless and it had great toiletries and a decent hairdryer. Air-con was excellent too which was well appreciated as even in September, the weather was warm.
Breakfast was really nice – good coffee and tea. Staff were super friendly and there were lots of places to relax and sit, either in the sitting rooms or there was a lovely garden at the back. The front porch was also charming! With the rocking chair and some decorative pumpkins, really setting the cozy, autumnal tone! An elevator to carry up the bags, but maybe I missed that?
- Adam (10/5): - A wonderful option in portsmouth. Great central location, free parking, you can walk everywhere. Charming property, more like a large Inn than a hotel. Has some character, staff were exceptional, nice to have good coffee available at all times, breakfast and water. Lots of areas (inside and out) to hang out. I would recommend this property
- Gretchen (9/5): Great location and wonderful staff - Beautiful room, exceptional staff. Location couldn’t be better for exploring Portsmouth on foot. Lovely breakfast and comfortable bed.
- Catherine (6/5): - Okay place. Elevator out of order, blow dryer didn’t work but the brought me a new one. Breakfast was only continental, thought it would be better since it was a bread and breakfast. Was in a great location where you could walk to shopping and restaurants.
- Arleen (8/5): - The elevator was not working so we had to carry our things up to our room on the 2nd floor. Staff offered to do this but they were young, not very professional and we declined. Also, the TV had issues as it ran off of the internet. A staff person gad to come to our room to connect it. The room and hotel was eclectic; but nice. An ok stay but we will not return.
- sally (10/5): BFF Birthday celebration! - I brought my BFF here for a 70th birthday celebration. It was PERFECT!!! The ladies at the reception desk were SO helpful, gave us recommendations for things to do, where to eat, where to go for pre and post dinner drinks, they are delightful.
Our room was spacious and comfortable. We lounged in the living room by the fire after dinner at The Library, with tea and cookies!
Breakfast was such a surprise....much more than the usual hotel breakfast! (unless you are in Norway)....lots of yummy home made treats, fresh fruits and smoked salmon with fresh bagels...even pumpkin cream cheese for the Fall season. Perfect location to get down town, very quiet, parking available. Thank you , we are already planning our next visit!
Sally broken elevator, but we had plenty of help with our bags.
- Burns (7/5): Cool, historic and unique hotel but not for everyone - The hotel was unique and cool. The included breakfast was pretty decent. Loved the downstairs bar and billiards room. Very cool. I spent extra to upgrade my room to a loft suite. The reality is that I do snore at night from time to time and I typically will spend the extra money to have more space and sleep separately on a couch or pull out (for my wife's sake). There were no extra blankets, linens, or a pillow in a closet. That would have been nice. The biggest disappointment was the number of a stairs that we had to climb to get to the room (which was at 80+ degrees when we got in there - brutal). No working elevator is really tough and makes the upper floor rooms impossible for people with knee or back problems. We made the climb with our bags but it wasn't fun. We enjoyed Portsmouth and I expect will will visit again but I'll most likely stay in a more traditional hotel next time.
- Rachel (8/5): - Great location within walking distance of the shops and restaurants. Room was clean, but the staff provided no information about amenities, parking or really anything helpful upon check in. Amenities in the room were lacking. Overall, was a little disappointed in this stay.
- Meghan (10/5): -
- Steve (10/5): - Friendly, clean and a great central location
- Amy (10/5): - Very friendly staff. Nice amenities. Would definitely stay again!
- Sandra (9/5): -
- Martin (9/5): Wir würden wiederkommen - Sehr gute Lage, nett bereitetes kleines Frühstück in liebevollem Frühstückstaum Etwas beengt, Treppen
- Naomi (10/5): - Loves the location and the staff was excellent. Good breakfast and easy parking. Walkable to everything but on a quiet street.
- Suzanne (6/5): - This was an odd greeting to the place. I waited about 10 minutes while staring at the check-in area that had a lot of ha cups
- bruce (8/5): - It was during travel
- Nancy (8/5): Terrific location! - Terrific location, excellent staff. Room was spacious and quiet, however it needed a little TLC (no lamps in the living room area, etc.). Breakfast was adequate.
- Felicia (9/5): -
- Petra (8/5): -
- estela (7/5): -
- Karin (10/5): Amazing and will definitely stay there again! - The staff was amazing. The hotel was absolutely stunning!! And its location couldn't have been more perfect.
- Gordon (10/5): Highly recommend - Super cool facilities. Sitting area in the back with shade for drinks/cornhole. The speakeasy in the basement was really nice and made a great old-fashioned. Jim's was especially tasty. The rooms were quaint and had interesting wallpaper. Facilities were clean and there was plenty of room for bags. Bathroom was a nice size and closed off from the bedroom. The elevator didn't work. That was bad when I had to carry two bags (a 30lb one-mine) and my wife's 45 lb bag. There was nothing else that was not perfect about this place
- Barbara (8/5): We didn’t stay. - Great location and the building was a beautiful old home with lots of rooms to gather in. The elevator was broken (with no timetable for it being fixed) and we were assigned to a room on the third floor. Old building with steep stairs, all our stuff for 15 days of travel, two seniors with sore backs and knees did not make this a workable situation. We gave this hotel a good rating because they gave us a full refund, but it was very challenging to find a reasonable alternative at the last minute.
- Tanya (8/5): - Hotel Portsmouth is a darling, quaint hotel. The room was comfortable and updated. The a/c was a little confusing, as it was a system I was not familiar with and there were no instructions. But we mostly figured it out so we could remain comfortable. The included breakfast was not very good. The sticky bun was cold and hard, the oatmeal was cold and the only dishes were plastic so it couldn’t be warmed in the microwave. But the eclectic vibe made up for the bad breakfast. And the bar downstairs was a lot of fun.
- David (8/5): - Great old house. The staircase was beautiful and do were the common rooms. My only complaint would be their use of the word “buffet” for the breakfast, that made me think it would have things like scrambled eggs, bacon maybe pancakes or waffles, it was more of an extended continental breakfast.
- Mary (8/5): - This is a lovely inn The room was nicely appointed. Very close to sites, restaurants, etc..
I was somewhat disappointed in the breakfast. We had been traveling quite a bit and had slept in and did not make it to breakfast until about 45 minutes before service ended. Unfortunately the breakfast bar had been well picked over and the only thing left was a bagel and a banana. I would just hope that they would refresh it so there could’ve been some fruit. Thank you for a nice stay.
- Robert (10/5): - Easy parking nice staff
- Sheila (10/5): - Employees were very helpful and went out of their way to accommodate all our needs!
- Connie (10/5): - Great property
- JoAnn (10/5): Nice spot to stay in downtown Portsmouth - Breakfast was fabulous. I like having water available and coffee. Great location-walk to everything. Dog friendly. I liked everything.
- Henry (6/5): - Great location and free parking. The room was not clean (dust and flies, etc). Check in was a bit wonky. Would all be fine but feel like it’s priced at a luxury stay and it was more like a high end motel.
- Henning (10/5): Skikkelig new England - Koselig - ikje for stort - sjarmerende.
- Arthur (10/5): - Cute hotel in the middle of Portsmouth in a converted large old house. Very cute hotel and would absolutely stay there again. Loved the breakfast.
- Jeff (6/5): - We stayed in the penthouse and the conditions were sub par. Fan didn't work, some lamps didn't work, curtains were broken, elevator was broken, WiFi was down, and trash wasn't changed from previous guests. Beautiful room but could use some updating especially for a penthouse experience. Friendly staff and otherwise clean and cozy.
- Jane (8/5): - The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was satisfactory and plentiful. Good location with lots of restaurants and shops nearby. The property is a bit dated, although some people might be looking for some place reminiscent of the historical nature of Portsmouth. The rooms are a bit small, but functional.
- Roger (6/5): - Lovely building. Nicely and uniquely furnished. Very British style. Service needs improvement. Our room wasn’t cleaned at all on the second day until we contacted the Redon at the front desk. She said she had no idea why it wasn’t cleaned. Brought in a bunch of fresh towels and left them on the bed which wasn’t made. Didn’t pick up soiled towels or clean the bathroom. Didn’t empty wastebaskets. Preposterous! Although staff is friendly, many of thhrm are untrained . This is unacceptable
- Renee (8/5): Perfect weekend stay - Beautifully decorated hotel. Comfy rooms. Great breakfast in the morning to get you on your way. Stayed in one of the bottom rooms, spacious and perfect if you bring your furry friend. However you can hear everything happening on the floors above. Request a higher level room or bring ear plugs to sleep if you are a light sleeper. By the way…Loved the speakeasy on the bottom floor!
- Judith (10/5): Beautiful Portsmouth! - It was A plus from start to finish!
- Leona (10/5): - Charming hotel with great service. We’ll be back.
- christine (10/5): -
- Carol (8/5): - Comfortable property with friendly and helpful staff in a central and quiet location.
- Camille (4/5): - The room was dark, small, and extremely uncomfortable. Not worth the price. Will write a disappointing review on social media when I get home. The staff were generally friendly and tried their best to be helpful, but the reception staff had few ideas about things to do and places to eat.
- laurel (10/5): Loved this place; you will too. - Beautifully decorated and maintained. Spotless!
Great location. Nothing!
- Nicholas (5/5): -
- Roy (10/5): - Lovely location in a great city.
- Jay (8/5): - Our room was very comfortable though a bit "tired". It could have certainly used an update especially the carpet.
The complimentary breakfast included many options but it seemed like the staff had difficulty keeping up with demand. (ie. had to request more silverware and coffee)
- James (10/5): - Lovely place to stay, easy 10 MINS walk to most restaurants and shopping. Loved the hotel only speakeasy in basement to end the night with a relaxing adult beverage.
- MARIA JOSE (10/5): - Nice place and excelent breakfast
