- CathieKSA (8/5): Good location, good price - This 2.5-3-star in BKK1 is an oldie but goodie. The price of $15 per night in the annex keeps me there ($20 if you want breakfast included), along with the owners and staff members whom I have gotten to know. Every day your towels are changed, and a laundry basket is left for you for daily service. Wifi is free and service is good. There are quite a few restaurants and bars on St. 278 near Wat Langka, where the hotel is located. It's easy to catch a tuk-tuk to explore the city. If you're a walker, then it's not too far to walk to Independence Monument, Diamond sland, the Royal Palace, and the Riverside. You'll want a moto or tuk-tuk to take you to Central Market or Russian Market. The main downside is that there is a lot of construction noise because this part of Phnom Penh is changing quickly as high-rise apartments/condos and office buildings are being built.
- Jeremy (10/5): Great hotel. Great value. - Very convenient for the clinic that my Daughter-in-law is attending prior to the arrival of my first grandchild. She will be staying there until he is born and they are both fit enough to return to their home which is far away. My son And his wife have stayed there many times over the last few years and have found it extremely convenient. They have always been looked after and treated like family. Very friendly and great value for money. I can happily recommend this Hotel.

- frizzy63 (8/5): It serves a purpose - We have stayed here many times and each time it is fine. It isn’t fancy, but the rooms are clean, the staff lovely and it is easy access to most things. The breakfast is horrid but there are plenty of places nearby if you need a coffee. If you want flash, don’t bother but if you want a place to sleep comfortably, feel safe, get laundry done for free and be able to get to places easily and not pay a fortune then this place is fine.

They were always asking me if I needed anything and there to help. Up until the moment I had to leave the manager took care of my personal belongings personally make sure that everything was secured. then he got a very good driver to the airport for me the minute I needed it
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I've stayed here on four different occasions and GG feels like a second home. The staff is friendly (underneath the Khmer penchant for shyness), and the breakfasts are generally good. Rooms and laundry are attended to daily, and bottled water is provided every day as well. Great location too.
- Kaimukimo (8/5): Still up and running - It's been years since I stayed. Surrounding environment is getting gentrified and modernized with super speed, Golden Gate still the same from 20 years ago. Room is clean, bedding is good, ac, hot water works. Just bring in your own toiletries. $15 living room and bed room, free breakfast, and free laundry services can't beat others.
- Keiramoo (2/5): Avoid! Avoid! Avoid! - I stayed here with my family a few months back and have agonised on whether to write a review or not, but in the interests of others I've decided to. OK.. The good: - it is in a good location, close to many things - the breakfast is pretty good. - the room was serviceable and had A/C The bad: - The room may have been servicable, but it was quite old - the height difference between the bottom of the bath/shower and the floor made it difficult to get out without slipping. My wife slipped twice and I slipped once. Both hurt ourselves. The ugly: - I can't be totally sure, but I believe the in-house cleaning staff almost certainly steal from the rooms. One night I thought I heard someone in the room, but thought I must be going mad so I didn't think anything of it. In the morning the door was ajar and $50 was missing from my wallet. I know it was missing because I'd counted my money the night before. A day or so later, the cleaners had already serviced our room and watched me leave the hotel. My wife however was in our room with my sleeping daughter. Now normally the cleaners would knock and wait for someone to answer the door, but this time the cleaner very quietly clicked open the lock and slowly opened the door and got a huge fright when my wife approached. We had friends staying here as well and warned them all, but not all listened. The next day, our friends had their emergency cash wallet stolen from their bag whilst in the room.
- Breyoot (8/5): Good budget choice - The check in was fast and easy. Staff very willing to be helpful. Centrally located within walking distance of good food and some of the attractions. Since I enjoy walking and exploring, I made it back from the river twice. Black Bambu and Mok Mony were nearby and great for lunch or dinner. A bit of street noise if your room is in front and the hotel should add two feet of hose to the shower wand. Breakfast was limited, but got the day started adequately. I was satisfied with my choice.

- tonylR3662JK (8/5): Consistently good - I stayed here again after a long absence. The hotel is perfectly located within walking distance of restaurants and shops, near Wat Langka and a short distance from Independence Monument. Single rooms are $15-20/night and everything is functional in the room except the air con in my room which was not working well but not needed as I was staying in January when nights are cool. There is a breakfast buffet with eggs, bacon, friend rice and noodles, fresh fruits and coffee/tea. They clean the room everyday and wash your laundry every day for free. So good value for short or long stay. Very good value.

- 57txtraveler11 (10/5): Home Away From Home - The location is the first great thing about this hotel. It is near Independence Monument which is a major landmark. There are numerous cafes, boutique shops, and spas in the immediate area which is very safe. Breakfast and daily laundry are included. While there isn't a concierge by name, the entire staff is extremely friendly and anxious to make sure you have a great visit in their city. The wifi is inconsistent and best accessed in the lobby. Practically every cafe in the neighborhood has free wifi.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The window of my room was so dark and didn't open, so I felt the room is little bit uncomfortable. Maybe that's because I chose the cheaspest room. The location and staffs are great.
- nhaislip (8/5): Perfect central location for a quick visit - We stayed 3 days in Phnom Penh and this hotel met ever expectation. Staff are friendly and speak good English. Very clean hotel and rooms with a/c, a nice comfort in the warmer season. Laundry service and breakfast is included with a great breakfast selection! They have tuk tuk drivers specifically for the hotel that will stay with you all day and are very helpful. The location is safe, even to walk around at night, and has everything you need close. Groceries, atm, good restaurants, etc. We even took a cooking class next door at the "la table khmere"

- EarthlingA (6/5): Good location for food - This is located at the tourist area. Many good food within walking distance. Starbucks is just a 2-minute stroll down. Good and affordable Japanese food 2-minute stroll away too. Clean beds and decent breakfast served.
- Clanerock (8/5): Good budget hotel - This is a great little budget hotel. I liked getting my laundry done in a matter of hours and included in the price. Central location just down the road from a very helpful travel agent and next door to a couple of good restaurants I don't like the showers but otherwise just fine
- aussie66Perth (6/5): Value for money. - Golden gate is a good clean hotel that provides breakfast and does your laundry for a very cheap price. Be careful with the laundry, we were there in a school trip building houses and were very dirty, our light coloured clothes were not cleaned well and the stains are now built in. Save the extra dirty clothes to clean at home. The bed was comfy, the water in the bathroom was nice and hot and a good strong pressure. This is not a luxurious hotel but for $35 a night, what more could you ask for.

Nice surprise: it comes with breakfast (rather basic) PLUS free laundry service. Really! Free laundry: I had never seen this before. Good central location.
- renovung (4/5): Need some windows. - This was the first hotel I stayed when I first arrived in Phnom Penh. Met by very friendly and casual staff at the reception. And as it happens to be a frequent occurrence in SE Asia, my room did not have a window, so it was dark without the lights on even during the day. I could not write a review earlier but during my first stay, on the third day, I noticed lots of itchy rashes on my body and of course there were bed bugs -really big bloody bugs. They changed my room but again no window. The second time I was there was because of a rat in my apartment. Yes, a rat was strutting on the cove ceiling in my studio apartment. So, I checked into the hotel at 1am , met by friendly staff even at that hour. I give 5 stars for friendliness at Golden Gate Hotel.
- PoorestTourists (6/5): Great location, average hotel - I have stayed here twice, in two different room types, each for a week. It is a budget hotel and I would stay again if looking for budget accommodations. But in general, I'd probably pay a bit more and stay at one of the boutique hotels down the street. First of all, the location is great. Right near the Independence Monument and there are always tuktuks to take you to see the sights. You'll need to take tuktuks around Phnom Penh anyway regardless of what area you are staying in, so this area is a bit less touristy than near the riverfront (though still touristy--lots of ATMs and tuktuk drivers), and has a lot of reasonably priced and delicious restaurants, including my favorite, Tom Yum Kang, about a block away. There is some construction going on in this area but I never found that it disrupted my sleep or walking around the streets. The hotel itself is average. The first time I stayed in a suite and the room was large with a couch area and small kitchenette as well. I think it was on the 3rd or 4th floor. The second time I stayed in a regular basic room which was on the basement level. The hotel does have an elevator, but you have to take stairs down to the basement. In this room, my a/c was not working quite a few times, though they were able to fix it every time. I just didn't like the feel of staying in the basement. The bathroom was much less nice in the basic room than in the suite as well, though it was still very average in the suite. Both rooms had mini fridges which is nice to keep water cold and for food. Both rooms also have a locking drawer for storing valuables, but no safe. I will say that the rooms were always clean and the wifi always worked great. The hotel staff is very helpful and friendly and speak great English. The breakfast at the hotel restaurant is very good, with both Western and Khmer choices. Depending on how full they are, they either have a buffet or allow you to order off of the menu, but either way the food is good and the fresh fruits are always on point. The hotel does your laundry for free which is a great perk! (They return it same day and I never had any issues with lost or damaged items). They can also arrange airport pickup and dropoff for a fee, which can be convenient, though you pay a premium for this. I would say that the budget room is a decent value for the money, if you want something under $30/night that you can rely on to be safe and clean and in a good area of Phnom Penh. The suites are not worth the price, though, since for the same price you can stay at a much nicer hotel nearby.

Steep stairways but being reasonably fit I had no issues with this. Staff were friendly enough, a/con was good, TV worked and had a hearty breakfast
- boatmanoz (4/5): Access issues - There are 2 Golden Gates in 278 street- almost every guest house is Golden something! We were booked in by the organisation I work for. ~ There is newer Hotel on one side of street and an older guest house style on the other. I know that the newer building had 15 to 20 steps with no hand rails- an issue as my wife and I both have a disability. We were attending training which was on the top floor of the hotel. I asked if there was an elevator from the ground level car park- was told yes- I doubted it by accepted. On arrival discovered - no elevator until reach foyer - up the 15 to 20 step leaning on whatever support could find. Could have stayed in old hotel and had ground floor room but would have had to climb up and down each day to attend training- between a rock and a hard place. Staff were sympathetic but unable to help - fault was with my organization. Food and staff in both places ok. Noise in 278 street an issue these days due to level of construction in the area.
- wandergesell (4/5): budget place - superior unfriendliness - golden gate is a budget hotel. so far so good. the wifi, though, is very budget as well. internet connection is very random. i complained about close to not existing internet connections for 4 days in a row. in vain. last time i complained the front desk guy told me in a very strict manner, that i am not welcomed anymore: "don't book here again." unpleasant as well was that they cancelled the modest buffet breakfast: sorry, not enough guests, sir.
- Maricris (8/5): Pleasant stay, professional and helpful staff - We did not expect much from Golden Gate after reading some bad reviews after we had booked the hotel. But to our pleasant surprise, our stay was hassle-free. The hotel staff were professional and attended to our needs (such as contacting tour companies to confirm certain arrangements), breakfast began at 6:30 am and there were enough options in the menu, the room was clean, the bathroom was simple but at least the hot shower worked, and the free wifi had strong signal. The only downside was that the a-c in our room was not cool enough, so we had to turn on the ceiling fan as well.
- Rene (6/5): Budget Hotel, needs re-decorating in old building - There is a general problem with the hotel information available on the Expedia website: Many hotels have rooms in two different price categories. But, in the photo gallery they do not show to which price category the room you see in the photo belongs to. They should really change that. For example, at the time I chose this hotel I based my decision on the photos of the Expedia website, especially on those for the bathroom. But, for Standard Category Rooms you cannot trust the photos. The rooms in the ground floor of the old building are not what they look like on the website. The Bathroom does not have a dedicated shower, just a shower head with a hose to the water heater fixed to the wall, as you find it in many SE Asia budget hotels. The hotel should really add a photo of a standard Bathroom to their gallery to avoid surprises. - - The room on the ground floor is also a little dark, the windows are blackened. This is for a good reason, they face to the back side of the next building and several water tanks which are a little old. As a compensation for this, the hotel should be a little bit more generous with the Watt Rating of the Electrical Bulbs installed in the lamps of the room. Brighter lamps would help when reading from printed paper. The darkness itself has a good side: it helps you sleep longer. There was no exhaust fan in toilet. The rooms are high, so for a single occupancy it is not a problem. But, I think I cannot recommend such a room for double occupancy.
- Pablo (6/5): Overall a good place to stay. - The bed was way too soft, the sircon was a little weak but the fan made up for it and having the windows blacked out was a little disorienting.
- DJY (4/5): Cheap with large but run down rooms - Reasonable location, but hotel has seen better days. Room was massive but kind of empty. Air Con did not work well, but fortunately there was a fan too. Everything was clean but very faded. Breakfast was very mediocre. Staff were not very helpful about finding nearby non-tourist restaurants and got the wake-up call wrong, and gave an odd estimate of how long to get to the airport (they said allow 1.5 hours, it took about 12 minutes - admittedly at 5.30am, but they did know this...)
