Guest Reviews
- hideo (10/5): - 料理が良かったです
- Yoshimi (10/5): - 客室露天風呂、最高に良かったです。温泉の質もとても良くまた、またいきたい宿です
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel is a bit run down, but it is very clean and the private onsen was incredible. I definitely recommend staying here if you are in Atami!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - 男性従業員が同僚に対して仕事のぐちを言っているのが廊下まで聞こえてきた
- S (8/5): - 温泉がすごい良かった
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Unfortunately, our stay at Shin Kado Ya was not pleasant. There was no hot water in shower, and the window blinds in the bathroom were not working making it difficult to shower without getting exposed to neighboring buildings. When we were out of the room, someone had entered the room to bring in some fresh drinking water. This was a nice gesture. However, the person had also used our bathroom and forgotten to flush leaving a rather unpleasant odor in the room. Luckily we had only booked one night here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great authentic old-school ryokan experience. - Very authentic Japanese ryokan experience. We had a huge tatami room which we found to be comfortable, although our room had no private outdoor bath which would have made it extra special. The rooftop onsen has spectacular views. Breakfast in our room was fantastic. One point would be that access to the ryokan could be challenging for some as it's atop quite a steep hill. WiFi is patchy but then you are here to relax and unwind!
- Dominic (10/5): Great value - Exceeded expectations. Best balcony I've ever seen with perfect bath on.
- Yohan (10/5): Nice to stay here. - Staffs are very kind and helpful.
Facility is a bit old but it is ok to stay. The room was quite big and it has a nice view.
Location is a bit far from the station and it is in the middle of the hill. So better to take a taxi if you have a big luggage.
- Verified traveler (8/5): High hospitality ! Staying is quite comfortable. - Staffs are friendly and polite.
The view from open bath is marvels.
We love this Japanese style hotel.

We love this Japanese style hotel.
- Alan (10/5): Very nice and clean hotel! - I stayed here for two nights. It is on the business side of Shinjuku. Everything was nice and clean. Lobby, elevator, hallways, and rooms were all clean. The hotel cost was perfect for my short budgeted stay in Tokyo.
- Masami (6/5): So so to stay - The room was cleaned enough, but it was with some blot and become fuzzy.
My wife was bitten by mosquitos and she was annoyed all night.
The service of Nakai-san was good enough,
- Randy (10/5): The Best Place in Atami - It was the most relaxing tranquil places we have ever experienced. Although the staff speaks very little English, they were genuinely helpful and accommodating. Tomomi the owner is a beautifully gracious host. She does everything! She checked us in, helped prepare our kaiseki dinner, and even carried our bags to the taxi. The onsen experience was authentic. The rooms were spacious, clean, and tasteful. Mostly, the hospitality and warmth of the staff was uncompromising. I was surprised at how convenient the location was to shopping, the market, the park, and neat little restaurants and coffee shops. Thank you Tomomi for making my family feel like we were part of your family! We look forward to returning to Shin Kado Ya soon!
- Bryant (10/5): Great place to relax - This place is super amazing!!! This place is perfect for whoever need to relax
- Verified traveler (8/5): 1st class service - Excellent service, super friendly staff, great place to unwind, relax and recharge. The meals are massive so make sure you leave room for them.
- Melanie (10/5): Tranquil stay, charming building and staff - I've stayed at a few ryokans but this one was probably the most memorable.
The hotel is close enough to a couple of JR train stations (useful if you're using the JR Pass to get around). I recommend getting a cab from Atami or Kinomiya Station, as the area is a bit hilly and there are lots of twists and turns.
Luggage storage is available if you are like us and arrive before check in time!
We had a large group and we were very pleasantly surprised at how large our room was--and even more delighted that there were shoji doors to help partition it up. The entire room was very clean, and were were provided yukata for our stay (always a bonus)! There's an indoor onsen, as well as a rooftop onsen, with the latter providing an amazing view of the town.
Unfortunately we weren't able to book a kaiseki meal for dinner but if there's a way to book that over Expedia, that would be great. This would be my only suggestion for improvement for an otherwise amazing place.
Lastly, the best part of our stay was the staff, hands down. For those who are wondering, there are English speaking staff members (especially the owner's daughter who happened to graduate from the same Vancouver, BC university as myself and one of our group members), so no need to worry about that. :) She (the owner's daughter) was especially helpful and even assisted us when we had issues putting a transaction on our credit card.
Overall, this is a fantastic place to stay and I highly recommend it!
- Cathy (10/5): Great views from room and open-air onsen - I'm not usually surprised by my hotel room, but in this case, I was simply astonished at the size of the
"room" and the view. It wasn't just a room, but more like "rooms". It was the largest set of tatami rooms I've ever booked. The interior was beautifully decorated, and the veranda ran the full length of the rooms. The view of the harbor was so pretty at sunset, at night, and in the morning. The crickets chirping at night and the birds in the morning - it just felt like I was in a movie, it couldn't have been more perfect. The breakfast was beautiful, nourishing, and satisfying. The dishes and tea sets were lovely.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing - The room was huge.... The onsen was not crowded at all and the one on the top floor had a great view of the city. It was worth the price for sure :)
- Rachel (10/5): Wonderful experience of Japan!! - We had a fantastic stay in this traditional ryokan. The staff are fantastic - we were warmly welcomed and given a great tip for an outing for the afternoon. The ryokan has its own onsen (hot spring) with separate public bathing areas for men and women. It was our first stay in a traditional Japanese Inn so we were very grateful for guidance and assistance from the lovely staff! The hot spring baths have an indoor bath and an outdoor pool and the water is really lovely. There is also an open air roof top bath which we did not use. Our rooms had a balcony with views of the hills and gardens. The tea served on arrival to our room was so refreshing and it was fun to experience the real Japanese breakfast wearing our Yukatas! The en suite toilet was western style and there was an en suite bathroom too. These en suite facilities were small and were the only areas showing signs of wear and tear or age - but everything was still spotlessly clean and we were very happy using the large comfortable public bath facilities! The breakfast was a feast! Many of the dishes we could not identify but there was rice and pickles and fish that was a little like a kipper. The hotel is a short taxi ride from the train station. Do take a taxi as Atami is very hilly and the hotel is too far to walk with luggage. The taxi is very reasonable and you get to see the town on the way! We then enjoyed walking down the hill into town.
- Richard (10/5): Nice hotel overlooking Atami town and bay - Authentic ryokan experience with super friendly staff and at a reasonable price. The views from the baths are amazing, as was the breakfast. Highly recommended - didn't want to leave.
