- Maura (10/5): Wonderful Birthday Weekend at the Garrison! - My husband and I stayed in Newburyport for the first time over our birthday weekend and we had such a lovely stay at the Garrison. The hotel was so beautiful, and the location was so so walkable and perfect! The breakfast was made to order, which was a treat. Overall we had a fabulous time at the Garrison in Newburyport!

- Kristin (8/5): - We loved our stay at the Garrison hotel. The location cannot be beat! Loved the historic nature of the inn. Staff were pleasant and the made-to-order breakfast was a real bonus. Facility was clean. The Inn fell short of a five star rating for two reasons - one is an easier fix than the other. The bed in our room was uncomfortable the first night, but in subsequent nights, our backs, neck and shoulders began to ache and getting a decent sleep was elusive. The mattress really needs to be replaced. (Room 307.) The other more minor inconvenience was the towels. The bath towels are so small you cannot easily wrap them around yourself. They do provide robes, but larger bath towels seems like a reasonable enhancement for a boutique hotel. We would love to return and if we do, we'll ask for a room with a newer mattress. Thanks to the staff for a very nice stay.

- Kristen (8/5): Cute hotel, but warm in the summer - We had a pretty good stay here. The hotel is in an old historical building and they did a good job of incorporating those older aspects with new, more modern ones. The bed was very comfy, the shower was new, and the breakfast was fantastic. They have a pretty decent breakfast menu, but the chef also says he’ll make anything you want. It didn’t take very long either and it was very good. They even had some pretty fancy options! The hotel has free tea and snacks available starting at 7 pm. While we attended and thought it was cute, we were the only ones there. It might be better to move up the time for this event so it’s not when people are having dinner and dessert and is instead at a more typical tea time. Our biggest complaint about this hotel was the AC. We were there during a heat wave, and our window AC unit was working really hard and barely made the room cool. They also didn’t have any fans available to help circulate the air. I know Massachusetts isn’t always hot, but it gets hot enough often enough that I think upgrading the AC/fan system is worthwhile. Overall, we enjoyed staying here and would stay again, but not in the summer.

I'm a repeat guest and feel quite at home here. Would be great if they had a pub or cocktail hour instead of evening tea time.

Loved her, and she felt bad because of all the bs with Expedia and put me in the penthouse! Lovely hotel! Newburyport is where my son and daughter in law live. Wonderful time, got to see people I had not seem since their wedding in June 2018. Highly recommend the Garrison Inn, can’t go wrong. I will never ever use Expedia again. Every agent I chatted with (never spoke to anyone) told me something different. One of them sent me to a fraudulent company. I didn’t intend to book through Expedia.
- F Carter (10/5): Family Outing/ Baptism to Newburyport Mass. - This was a lovely Older and quaint hotel! I was there right before the season started so there was only six or seven guest stain in the hotel at the time. There was always somebody at the front desk and they were very nice. There was a gentleman that made me food to order exactly as I wanted in the kitchen each morning, which was great!! The room was very comfortable and well decorated. The location was just a couple blocks from walking into the main part of the town so it was great and convenient. I had read Previous reviews that people said that there was nobody at the front desk when they arrived and seem like it was sort of deserted, but I don’t agree with that at all. It’s a very quiet and peaceful with a lot of charm. There was a young woman named Lauren at the front that I talked to quite a bit, and she explained a lot about the town and the history of the hotel. Everybody was very friendly. It is not a haunted hotel !! I didn’t see anything or smell any of the chocolate chip cookies that they said I might smell coming up from the basement. LOL. I know this hotel might be slightly higher priced than a few of its competitors that I also looked at, but my family stayed at some of those hotels, and I thought that the choice I made here at the garrison was a better choice. I would recommend you stay here if you want an old-fashioned and and quaint place to relax and also be located just blocks away from the main town And water!’

Newburyport on Massachusetts wonderful North Shore is quite delightful &now we have discovered the best possible location for staying overnight, for time to enjoy the Town’s many lures, the ocean at Plum Island, & Parker River National Wildlife Sanctuary — with its all-seasons fauna, fauna, & open waters Especially love Foxes & long-legged wader birds: Great White Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Great Blue Herons, & a delightful assortment of diving sea ducks & dabbler ducks too. Something for everyone. Yet Newburyport town is equally enticing, with its distinctive shops, art galleries, maritime history, varied architecture, and welcoming culture. William Lloyd Garrison was a fierce abolitionist who understood the morally bankrupt enslavement of Black Americans had to end. His activism included publishing “The Liberator” — a tabloid-sized newspaper reporting all activity that would galvanize both Northerners & some Southerners to understand that slavery as an institution must end in the United States, whatever the cost — including four years of Civil War. Goals also included keeping the North and South united together as one nation for mutual benefits, and aiding the Underground Railroad.

My two complaints the main light stopped working in my room told housekeeping and tried to call downstairs. The bed needs to be replaced the room is beautiful but the bed was beyond uncomfortable time to upgrade the bed for a boutique had the worse sleep ever! Breakfast as yummy as well. The receptionist upon check in was the best so friendly and accommodating!!

This is the ultimate Newburyport hotel: close to downtown, within walking distance to the river, in the heart of the city, with large rooms, modern, but antique-looking amenities, and a nightly tea-time that just seems to fit.

- Cynthia (8/5): Kinda like Grandma's - This is a nice and happy hotel. The building is older (historical) and therefore so are some of the fixtures. Bed comfort is so personal that it's difficult to rate - for us the bed was hard, but some people like that while others don't. We were in a corner king and the room while plenty big had some some features - like the closet and the bathroom. The bathroom could definitely use a new toilet. Made to order breakfast is included and very good. The staff is WONDERFUL - So very helpful and kind. So for us it's was kinda like staying at Grandma's house - your room and bed might be a little older and not as comfortable as home, but you don't care because of the care you receive. The hotel is reported (on some sites) to be haunted - no evidence of that on the second floor! We had a lovely stay.

- Yusuf (8/5): - Fantastic location, grand building, the penthouse duplex was very pleasing to the eye with excellent temperature control and a very comfortable bed. But for the price I paid per night, I should have had a tea and coffee machine, a smart TV, complimentary water and high quality bath amenities. Every little thing had a surcharge, the television channels were rudimentary and boring, and despite a great complimentary breakfast, the surliness of the server and the time it took to be served left a lot to be desired. Paying each night for a log to be provided for the fireplace was a little pokey too. Honestly, when it is so premium priced, I expect a grand bundle is what it's all about!
- Douglas (10/5): The Garrison Inn fits perfectly in Newburyport - I love the history of this Inn. It's very easy to learn the history of who Garrison was from grabbing an info pamphlet in the lobby to carry with me as I wonder through town. The breakfast in the morning was better than any traveling breakfast I've had in the last decade. I think this place is great and I will recommend it to anyone traveling through Newburyport. Easy walk into town.

- Jennifer (6/5): - The bed was comfortable. That was the best part of our stay here. Good breakfast offered in the morning, as well. But, hairs stuck to the shower wall and floors in the bathroom means housekeeping does not care for the details. I even caught one of the maids USING my bathroom while she was supposed to be cleaning it. Ugh. Stray garbage lie undetected in the hallway for days, the carpets felt/looked dirty. Staff was also not too friendly. You'd return after a day out and the desk staff wouldn't even say Hi. Nor did they ask how our stay was upon check-out. So strange. We would not stay here again. If you like "character" of history I guess it's OK. Good location to walk to things, but Newburyport is all walkable, really.

- Daniel (2/5): - First I called to see if there were any rooms available and had to leave a voicemail because no one answered the phone. In my voicemail I asked if someone could get back to me to let me know if there were any rooms available. Last Friday afternoon I booked this room for 2 nights on your website and was provided my reservation confirmation along with a COVID update from the hotel. My girlfriend and I packed our things and drove an hour to hotel. When we went to check in, the gentlemen at the desk informed us that he didn’t have a reservation for us and was told to deal with Hotels.com. I spent more tan an hour on the phone with multiple people trying to figure out the issue. The only hotel they could find was a 2 star hotel that has a bad reputation in the area. Ultimately, we had to drive back home and lost the weekend. I would like you to know how inconvenient this incident was and would also like you to know that a similar situation happened to us 2 summers ago. I have used this company on many occasions in the past, but these 2 incidents have really been incredibly disappointing

The service was excellent, and the complimentary breakfast sandwiches (taken back to our room per covid rules) were delicious. The room was well decorated, had a king bed, and was very clean. I would absolutely book again.

The staff made it special by having chilled drinks for us waiting in the room, rose petals on the bed and a fire going for us when we got back from dinner. Breakfast was delicious and made to order. We want to give a big shout out to Jody who made our stay very enjoyable. Thanks for the dog treats, our black Lab loved them! I highly recommend the Garrison Inn.

- Staci (10/5): Wonderful town and location - Wonderful place to stay. Only stayed one night, but definitely would stay again. The area is so nice and charming. Love all the history around town and at the inn. The breakfast was wonderful...freshly cooked meals. Definitely a place to come back to!! Very welcoming staff and residents!!
