- Bonita (10/5): Quick stayover in Clarens - We had a 1 night stay over at the Golden Gate hotel. We initially thought we booked at the hotel but was surprised that we had booked a chalet. The chalet was perfect with its own braai (BBQ) outside and all the amenities required for a proper self catering experience. Would definitely stay there again as it about a 15 minute scenic drive to Clarens.

- Annekie (8/5): Great stay with minor critique - Great stay, few things that could've been better. Wi-Fi doesn't reach the rooms, which is especially bad since the TV signal was (understandable) grainy at best. The AC unit in our room was a welcome commodity however it was making a loud mechanical noise the entire time it was on. All staff was really friendly and the rooms and common areas were very clean. Some confusion with the restaurant, we paid for bed and breakfast but on the second day of the trip was asked to pay for breakfast. One of the big reasons we chose Golden Gate was to see the vultures at the vulture restaurant but was very disappointed, no vultures and it looked like they hadn't been fed there in quiet some time.

- Gerrie (8/5): Good sleepover on our way to Clare's. - Even though a bit pricey, old and in need of some tlc, the accommodation was clean, everything worked and we had a lovely stay.The area is breathtaking, the staff friendly and the service good.

The staff is very friendly and helpfull.Water was seeping through the bathroom floor resulting in the bathroom being flooded.There was no hot water in the bathroom, so we had to boil water in order to wash.There was an unbearable noise coming from the roof, the fan extractor in the bathroom couple with the noise from the generator right in front of the room.The hotel and the room in particular requires urgent maintenance.

- W Henry (4/5): Past it Prime??? - Our family wanted to camp in golden Gate but the excessive rain forced us to consider an alternative measure so we booked a chalet with Golden Gate Hotel. The four-person room had only one towel, no telephone to call reception to bring more in the pouring rain, and carpets had several active mould growths with accompanying damp smells. The toilet didn't have a toilet paper holder, the rolls were simply stacked on the window pane shelf. Glassware provided did not match. The restaurant's food was okay for the price, except one got the distinct feeling no one cared about the quality of food presented (see salad photo attached). The staff were hovering around like vultures, yet not saying a word to us, not introducing themselves, which really detracted from the dining experience. Some basic server 101 training might go a long way to upselling items and elevating the dining experience. The plusses were the immediate availability of the unit at short notice and electric blankets on the two main single beds since the room was really cold. Won't recommend it and certainly won't consider staying here again. The price seemed acceptable, then they slam another charge for about the same amount on the account with no explanation of what it's for (on top of the permit fee) which left a sour taste in my mouth. There were no amenities such as a pool, sauna, nothing available. The room is dilapidated. Feeling scammed on that front. For the all-in price, rather drive by.

As for the stay it was great - courteous staff, everything worked well. Ultra clean towels and bed linen, beds super comfortable, with heated under blanket a luxury !! Far too few TV channels (only 5 or 6), no WiFi in room, no telephone in room (Bad if there's an emergency) - too few guest facilities and nothing for kids.

No heaters in room despite the cold , we requested additional blankets due to electric blanket not working, took about 4 hours to arrive with an unhappy face. Took numerous calls for a simple request. No intentions to return.

We asked the concierge many questions about the park and they were answered in detail. Our free breakfast was huge and so tasty. We even got to play tennis on their courts with free equipment. - Verified traveler (8/5): Enjoyable stay, with some issues. - Our stay overall was enjoyable. The food at the hotel was good, really big portion sizes. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Unfortunately we had a few issues during our stay: The central heating in room was not working. The staff helped as much as they could and in the end, gave us the heater being used in reception. We also requested a cot when booking and while we were supplied a cot, there was no matress. Again, the staff did everything they could to rectify it and were helpful throughout.

- Verified traveler (4/5): Unfortunately: Never again! - We had booked two chalets and wanted to have them next to each other. My request via e-mail was not answered. When we arrived one chalet had not been serviced, in the second bedroom one curtain was on the bed, the other one was partly torn down hanging from the rail. We were given another chalet where there were not enough towels. An appropriate number of towels was an issue throughout our stay. In one chalet housekeeping opened the cupboard and took out towels, in the other chalet the cushion was not on the bed but in the cupboard. Housekeeping opened doors they should not have opened at all! When making the beds the cushions werre thrown on the dirty carpet.The chalets are quite run down. It is a pity and a shame because the location in the Golden Gate Highlands is spectacular.

- Claudia (10/5): Views for days... - This hotel was stunning with picture perfect views. Be sure to pick a north facing room. Rooms were very spacious, with king sized comfy beds. Breakfast was great with a wide selection and the best oil-free omelettes ever eaten. About 20km out from Clarens and no near by restaurants, so days need to be planned well as roads are extremely dark at night. Hotel only offers buffet dinners.

- Martin (8/5): Chalet review - The stay was amazing. The whole experience was very impressive. Just one glitch was the TV whe you have nothing to do at night. The Mnet chanel was every night off with some or other problem that they could not fix. We called one night t report it and we are still waiting to hear from them. When we booked out we heard that some or other connection was faulty.
- Marilize (8/5): Not what I expected - Hotel is very outdated. The bed linen had marks on and the carpets were dirty. The room location was great as we had a fantastic view of the mountains. The breakfast was also very nice. There was no milk in the room or wifi as advertised. The check in was also a mission as they wanted me to pay again. I had to go into my bank statements to show that the payment went off on 15 Feb 2019. I don't know if they wanted to rip me off but when I insisted that payment was made, they all of a sudden saw it on their side. I will not recommend this hotel or go there again.

- Andrea (8/5): Lovely overnight stay - We had a lovely overnight stay at the Golden Gate hotel and Chalets. The view is absolutely spectacular! The service at the snack bar could have been better however it didnt dampen our families overall great experience at the hotel. The hiking trails were out of this world and we loved every minute. We will definitely be back for a longer visit.

Room was large with a stunning view of Buttress. Restaurant was average - first night trout was excellent, second night meal was average. Good service throughout with very friendly staff Clarens is a cute town 20km away -perfect for a meal and wander around

You need to employ a proper chef with Clarens as a top food and coffee destination, the menu in your restaurant is what you get in a take away shop! With excellent coffee in clarens your cappuccino is a ripple off, small cups no foam and cheap weak taste. Please take your employees to clarens for barista training. Your coffee lounges plenty fire places, but no fire for cosy atmosphere. It's a same that such a nice hotel, in a beautiful area, are as good as empty, me at probably due to the lack of inventive and creative thinking which much be lacking when it comes to the management there. I remember the restaurant in the hotel serving the best carvery and food years ago!

- Heather (8/5): Buffet a disaster!!! - The buffet dinner was terrible. The food was cold and almost finished. I had to ask the waiter for more roast pork. He went to the back and returned and chatted to a couple who sat next to us and I had to ask him to be told that he has filled it up. The tablecloths were dirty. I had a cup of coffee and used the wooden stirrer and something black raised to the top of the cup. I was totally upset that I had to part with so much money which was a total waste as there was no taste to the food. Does the chef taste what they are preparing for customers? There was one curry one roast, pasta, a tomato sauce which was obviously canned just opened and left in bannery. How can you call this a buffet - really!!!!

- Oscar&Sandra (6/5): its all about the view inside a national park - We were moved to a family cottage so my review is based on that... Service is OK, TV did not work nor we had hot water.. Everything feels a bit old, but the view (from the cottages ) is amazing, just peaceful and beautiful. Have in mind that they will charge you a park fee (per person) for every day you stay so beware as this can alter your budget.
- Eltheo (8/5): Disability room - The disabled room is comfortable but the shower chair is a big NO! It’s so small a person don’t fit on it and the grap rails is at the wrong place. I had a look at the chalets and that chair in the shower is a bigger NO! The toilet can be tricky for people as it is very high and the basin is like on the toilet in the hotel room.

- Vicki (10/5): Amazing view - I selected this place because of its proximity to the mountains and was not disappointed. The staff were pleasant and helpful and our chalet had a breathtaking view. The restaurant at the hotel was convenient and had fair prices.

- Liesel (10/5): Great stay - Awesome hikes in the area, that's what we went for. The hotel was great, the huge comfy bed after a day out in the sun and wind was very welcome. The room was close to the coffee shop and sometimes we could hear the hum of the extractor fan in the day. At night it was not a problem at all.
- RPT (10/5): - Fantastic Hotel. Staff are super friendly, polite and accommodating. Buffet dinner and breakfast were excellent. Certainly recommend a stay.

Rather book at: *The Clarens Country House *Mont d'Or The toilets at Golden Gate had a really bead smell. they didn't tell me that they will be hosting a wedding on the same weekend. they gave me a disabled room after I had called them twice to make sure they don't. Worst Accommodation ever!

- Mapule (6/5): Clean hotel, great view - Rooms are incredible, breakfast was great (a bit more variety should be included). Upon arrival, staff was not welcoming and receptive. I would encourage the hotel to teach and train their staff about their approach to tenants. Service delivery is of most importance.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - My experience was not positive. The visitors had a party next door and they were very loud. There was no telephone numbers to call management to quiet the next door visitors.

- C J (6/5): Mixed review - The room which we were allocated had not been made ready but the reception staff were apologetic and helpful and we were soon settled into another. On the negative side on both evenings we were there the only meal available was the expensive buffet - no a la carte option - and there are no other restaurant options short of driving to Clarens if you only want a lighter meal.

- Magdalena (8/5): - we had a great time in the Golden Gate Hotel. This picturesque Hotel is situated in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park in South Africa. The rooms is comfortable, the staff friendly, and it is wonderful just look at this Majestic Mountains. Thank you for our wonderfull stay. We will do it again next time.
