Guest Reviews
- Massachusetts_Member (10/5): Friendly spot in the center of campus - I hesitated a bit after reading some of the reviews here, but our experience was great. Booked online, easy and friendly check-in process. The room was clean, quiet, and comfortable and had everything we needed. We had no issues adjusting the thermostat or keeping warm; I believe it even helpfully displayed relative humidity.
We arrived late at night and were pleasantly surprised that coffee, tea and snacks were available in the lobby 24/7. A lot of fancier hotels limit this to some arbitrary hours of the day, which can be frustrating when you’ve been traveling for hours and just want a little something without having to leave the hotel.
We were there for our child to tour the campus and the central location was perfect. Easy in and out of the garage too — it’s based on license plate readers, so no tickets or barriers.
The hotel ambiance isn’t fancy but the lobby was actually pretty cozy on a cool fall morning and the breakfast was tasty. We thought we got a great deal for what we paid and it’s so cool to see hospitality students working in a real-world setting. They made us feel at home.
- Mary (10/5): - A great stay in a comfortable, clean room -- will stay again.
- Christopher (10/5): - Very good stay!
- Barbara (10/5): - The hotel was awesome; & the staff is efficient, helpful, and very knowledgeable. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience.
- Janet (4/5): - They were difficult to deal with because the staff offered glib little lies in place of customer service which, I assume, is what management told them to do. I grew very frustrated with being told one thing and finding it wasn't true. Very poorly managed property.
Guests have no control over the temperature in the room The thermostat is a prop. They are quick to offer a heater, so I assume they are used to guests being cold.
- Jennifer (2/5): - The property itself was very difficult to find, and the parking situation was confusing. I traveled with my 82-year-old mother, who has difficulty walking long distances, and based on the parking alone I would not choose to stay here again. I wish I had known this beforehand.
When we finally reached the front desk, I was told we needed to pay for parking and provide my license plate number. That meant I had to return to the car. Unfortunately, by then the 20-minute grace period had expired, and I could not ask my mother to walk all the way back with me—she cannot be left alone. Thankfully, the reception staff eventually asked someone to retrieve it for me, which I truly appreciated, even though the staff member tasked with the job seemed disgruntled about it.
The hotel itself is quite loud, with doors that slam frequently. It was less noticeable at night, but on our first evening it sounded as though an entire family was in our room—their voices carried clearly, likely through the register on the outside wall.
Our room was generally clean, but the shower was noticeably discolored, which made it feel less fresh. There was also no microwave, which made the stay less convenient. After our second night, I asked for two additional bottles of water, but the cleaning staff ignored this request, which was disappointing.
On a positive note, the food options on the second floor were excellent and very accessible for my mother. The breakfast provided by the hotel was especially good, wi
- Abigail (10/5): - Thank you for the hospitality
- Kenneth (10/5): - A
- Julie (10/5): - Great stay!
- Max (10/5): - It is a good place
- Benjamin (10/5): - Everything was great and the staff (at the desk and working on the rooms) were all incredibly nice and helpful. My only concerns were that the closet doors (both sides) were really difficult to close and that I like to sleep a little warm, but it was tough to turn off the AC/air at night so I had to actually cover the vent. Thanks.
- Jeanine (10/5): - Such a great and convenient hotel to stay when visiting my daughter at UMass. Hotel is clean, staff is very friendly and helpful as. They have a wonderful breakfast in the morning! Have stayed at this property 3x already and have been happy each stay.
- danielle (10/5): Recommend for Family Campus Visit - We stayed overnight as a family of 5. We were visiting UMass to take a tour of the campus. Hotel UMass were able to set up in adjoining rooms. Rooms were clean, AC worked well, bathrooms clean and provided amenities. Breakfast was great. The views of campus of fantastic. We took a great walk around the lake and were able to aquaint ourselves with the campus on our time before the formal tour. Parking was simple too.
- Corinne (10/5): - Staff very friendly and helpful, room very clean and comfortable and close to all
- Dustin (10/5): great stay - Great location directly on campus with top notch service and comfortable clean rooms
- Robin (10/5): - Hotel UMASS was a wonderful experience. Everyone and everything was perfect. I appreciated the gluten-free items provided for breakfast and the diligence of the employees in making sure that the area was safe. It was exciting being there during the students' return, even though that was not my purpose in being there. I highly recommend this accommodation.
- Andrew (10/5): - Clean, excellent dining hall area open to hotel guests, lots of free parking.
- Subrato (10/5): - It was a great stay
- aikta (10/5): - Breakfast
Air conditioner
- Carol (8/5): - Near my granddaughter’s dorm
- Edward (8/5): - Being an old person, seeing all the fresh, eager young people on campus was invigorating. Loved wandering the grounds.
- Russ (10/5): - Nice
- Sean (6/5): - The hotel overall is in decent shape and the location is great. The showers however were disgusting. They need an upgrade and some tlc. My girlfriend and I were too grossed out to use it.
- Chin-Wen (10/5): - Wonderful place to stay
- Teri (8/5): - Convenient for moving in a student to UMass. Nice to have breakfast included. The bathroom was super small!
- Ian (8/5): - The hotel is needing some modernization and up keep.
- Melissa (10/5): Clean, comfortable and 5 star service! - Our experience was great! Tynesia and Brittany were amazing! They were helpful with us having booked one reservation for Thurs night, and another reservation for Fri and Sat... they made us a priority to get a room before 3:00 on Friday. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The coffee in the lobby was really really good. Shower water was hot. Rooms were quiet. All around a great experience!
- Sarah (10/5): - We had a fantastic stay! The staff was warm, welcoming, and always helpful. The hotel itself was beautiful, and it made our visit to UMass even more enjoyable.
- Joanna (6/5): - At breakfast a lot of pastries had run out and I was just told well we are busy there’s no more left this was at 9:20am and breakfast is until 10. I know the hotel was busy prices were high and it was move in at UMASS. Also in your room, it gives instructions on how to access Apple TV and Netflix. I couldn’t do this so I called for assistance and when the guy came, he explained that is not on offer even though it says it is. They just have very limited channels.
- Marisela (4/5): - The location is convenient. Close to Amherst college
- kinnari (10/5): - It was pleasant stay , very convenient to help my child move in
We stayed queen twin double bed rooms which was quiet spacious
- Johnny (10/5): - We have been staying at this hotel for several years while helping our children settle in at UMass each fall. The location is ideal for parents, the staff are consistently professional, the rooms are spacious and spotless, and the service is always excellent. A truly convenient and reliable choice.
- Dazhi (10/5): - I spent four nights in hotel umass. Very convenient location and parking. Worcester Cafe is just across street and you can eat free if your college child is on meal plan. Highly recommended.
- Kristian (10/5): - Good value for money.
- Dan (10/5): - It’s great that the university supports an on campus hotel. Staff was friendly and responsive, property is extremely convenient to all points in Amherst. Everything was clean and well maintained, but with that said a refresh should be in the 5 year plan.
- Sabine (10/5): - It’s great if you want to visit the college campus. It’s right there with convenient parking.
- William (8/5): - A good spot to stay at when you visit UMass. No miss no fuss. Clean, great service and excellent price.
- Craig (10/5): - Right on campus
- Barbara (10/5): - Our room was just fine. Arriving at a campus location on an early August Sunday evening was lonely and a tad bit creepy. And we were not 100% sure where the actual hotel was. As it turns out, parking was on the 2nd level, the hotel was inside the student center on the 3rd level, and it was not as clearly marked as we would have liked
- Eliot (8/5): - The property was quite clean and comfortable and convenient for our purposes. I thought the room was smaller and more crowded than I would have liked, but it provided most everything we needed. The staff were polite and competent and much appreciated. All in all we had a nice stay.
- Thierry (10/5): - Good surprise hotel!
- Kimberly (10/5): - We thought the staff was nice. The continental breakfast was the best we’ve ever had and we loved everything about it.
- Melissa (6/5): - Beds are very hard and they used flat sheets that come off easily while sleeping. I slepted on a scratchy mattress pad that kept coming off.
Other than that, the place is great.
- kerdange (10/5): - It was a very nice experience. The hotel is very quiet, the front desk people are welcoming. Very clean.. love it there! I wish i can get a room for parent weekend. I will definitely be back.
- Janet (6/5): - Great location for touring UMass Amherst. Property could use a renovation. The bathroom was tiny with an awkwardly opening door. Beds were comfortable. Staff was welcoming and professional. Breakfast was similar to a Hampton Inn.
- Diana (8/5): - Hotel was good. You do have to add in parking when doing your cost comparison, and the breakfast was only a continental type offering. Otherwise, it was fine for an overnight stay.
- Jill (10/5): - My family had a great stay! The room was very clean and the staff were hospitable and helpful!
- Rosa (8/5): - Enjoyed our stay
- Jill (10/5): - Very neat, clean and comfortable
- Jason (10/5): - Convenient to the conference we attended. Parking was easy, accommodations were comfortable, staff was helpful - stay was very pleasant all around.
- Dawn (6/5): - Very convenient for any on-campus events. Easy and affordable parking. Nice staff. Very clean.
- Lisa (6/5): - It was very difficult to find. You have to put in your gps the parking garage to find it. The gaps in the doors made me uneasy staying alone in the room. There was a good 2 inches from floor to door. There were no restaurants to walk to.
- Michael (8/5): - Good and convenient for orientation at umass.
- Claudia (10/5): - Located in the heart of UMass Amherst campus, the convenience to the college is unsurpassed. The staff welcomed us, accommodated all our requests, was friendly and genuine. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and had everything needed. A++++ one of the friendliest and comfortable places I’ve stayed in a while.
- EJBDOB (10/5): Great mid range hotel in Amherst - Lovely hotel. Inexpensive option in the summer in Amherst. Healthy options for breakfast. Great little shop for snacks on the garage level. Clean comfortable rooms. Parking is cheap. Not noisy. Parking garage takes time to get used to going around and around to get to the hotel.
- Lorna (10/5): - Convenient and clean
- Luciene (10/5): - Everything was great
- Joseph (10/5): Short but sweet stay - The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. The room was clean and relatively modern. The A/C was great!!
- Laurence (6/5): Good staff. GPS misdirects. - staff was very good. Biggest problem: when you put Hotle name/ or address into GPS it guides you to a driveway in back of another building. You can see your hotel, but no way to get there. It tookme a 1/2 hour to figure out how to get to you. You need to email people in advance to input "Umass hotle garage" in order to get to you. Also parking garage arrow for you is arund the bend instead of when you enter.
- Riad (8/5): - The environment and natural calmness is unique. Staff and facility cleanness were great. However , parking is far away and challenging to bring stuffs from parking garage to hotel
- Priya (10/5): - Lovely stay. Convenient location and good value for money. I appreciate how low stress this experience was from booking the room to checkout.
- Kathleen (8/5): - Great place to stay while spending time with your UMASS student! Easy parking, great location, friendly staff
- Jingjing (10/5): - Nice and clean hotel in the center of UMass.
- Patricia (10/5): - Wonderful gf options
- jonathan (10/5): - property is fine
- Pan Tao (8/5): - Nice and friendly hotel
- Christina (10/5): - I loved the convenience and ease of staying on campus for orientation.
- erika (10/5): - This was great and convenient for thee location on campus!
- Kim B (6/5): Location location location-parking - We stayed here for a lacrosse tournament and you can’t get a closer place to the venue. We walked to the field. The condition of the room is average to poor. Lots of things need to be upgraded. The breakfast was average. There is no laundry facilities-big one for a tournament. The underground parking was very nice.
- Kathy (8/5): - It was very conveniently located for visiting a student and the breakfast was great. The only downside for my family was not having a pool or hot tub. But they finally got mini fridges in the rooms!
- Jennifer (8/5): - Staff were lovely. Location is great! Plenty of places to walk too. The parking convenient and you do have access to a small shop for food downstairs.
The are was close to shops, restaurants and many activities.
A few slight challanges:
1. The bathrooms had visible mold and the room had broken ceiling tiles.
2. Continental breakfast is a great addition, but the weekend we were there. The lobby was filthy with plates, food and beverage spills all over. It is the lobby, not a dedicated room, and while that works for Continental the lack of cleanliness was not a great visual for anyone coming in, nor those looking for a spot to eat.
3. Lawn maintenance began at 7am on a Sunday morning.
4. Beautiful view with a large window, but hard to see through. Not sure how to solve that with New England weather.
Overall, a nice stay. Just small things which kept it from being great.
- Martina (10/5): - Good
- Lindsay (10/5): - This hotel was quiet, lovely, and close to many amenities on campus. I particularly loved that the extra blanket in the closet was a very fluffy, down comforter. It was amazing! Highly recommend!
- Karyn (10/5): - We stayed for one night for a tournament. The hotel was lovely, as was the breakfast.
- WHITNEY (10/5): - No issues
- Mia (10/5): - Great place to stay. Very convenient!
- michael (10/5): - Hotel was clean, room was clean and quiet.
Front desk staff was friendly, helpful and seemed genuinely interested in ensuring customer was satisfied.
- Allyson (8/5): - Clean and convenient to the campus. Decent rooms and good price
- peter (10/5): - Excellent experience especially that we could bring our dog. Only negative event was trying to retrieve a phone charger left in room 424 a few hours after check out. Front desk staff was not very responsive to trying to retrieve it as housekeeping had left for the day and offered zero recourse for searching for it. Very disappointing and not helpful.
- Kevin (10/5): - Umass hotel was a great stay! We stayed here years ago and they have since renovated and fixed it up much nicer than before. The staff was very helpful and friendly and we greatly enjoyed our stay and will be back! thanks!
- Jeannie (10/5): - Stayed here for a lacrosse tournament and had a great time. Convenient to the fields and local restaurants. Check in was easy, parking included, clean rooms and very comfortable beds! Staff was very helpful. If you’re trying to get to the hotel, put in UMass Amherst Parking Lot in Apple or Google Maps. Waze was not helpful. The hotel is connected to the parking lot.
- John (10/5): - Great staff at check in, property was very clean and the rooms were really nice and fairly new remodeling!!
- Katherine (10/5): - Great hotel right on the UMass Campus. Clean and updated rooms. Comfortable beds and a good breakfast. Would definitely go back.
- Laura (10/5): - Clean quiet well appointed. We would stay again
- lydia e (8/5): - Good
- Nicole (10/5): - Clean hotel with a cozy atmosphere. Great pricing and location.
- Linda (10/5): - I stayed here one night for a conference. It was better than I expected for the price. The staff were friendly and helpful in answering my questions. Pro tip: Enter :U Mass Parking Garage" in your GPS for best results.
- jessica (8/5): - The location was perfect for what we needed. The room was fine
- Kai (10/5): - Convenient location!!
- Mikala (10/5): - Great hotel!
- Echo (10/5): - Location is perfect for campus visit. Pretty minimal but sufficient.
- Jason (8/5): - I liked it overall but the AC took hours to go
Down three degrees.
- 759katig (2/5): Attempted to Change My Price Retroactively - While planning a visit for my college reunion in Northampton, I booked this hotel for a total price of $302.09 for three days. Each night was about $98. I figured that the price was very low because it's a modest hotel in an inconvenient location, so I didn't question it. You need to walk through a campus center at a public university to check in and out, and it feels very much like a hostel.
Upon arriving, I was told that the price that I was sent on my receipt was an error. They said that their website hadn't been working properly, and that they would only be able to charge me the $98 for night one. They said that I would need to pay over $500 for nights 2 and 3 - a 5x increase. I asked how that was possible, since it didn't match the receipt and reservation confirmation that I was given. The front desk worker stated that their manager, Anna Bernstei, had emailed me and one other person that this error affected twice to try to correct the issue. I searched my email inbox for her email address; the employees typed it in for me. I had received no emails from her. They asked me to check my spam folder; there were also no results. I gave my phone to the employees so that they could check for themselves. They took photos of the screen showing that there were no results, and said that she must have typed my email address in wrong.
They stated that their prices were still the lowest in the region. It's true that many rooms were going for $500 or more due to graduation weekend, but I was able to use the Hotel Tonight app to find one last minute room nearby in Springfield for $145, and then I called that hotel to extend my stay. The next two nights were about $300. However, the hotel I booked as a replacement was very modest and would normally cost about $100 a night or less. My new hotel also said that their prices were a bit higher due to graduation, but the main factor was that a large wedding party had also reserved a lot of rooms. I think if I had advanced notice that the prices here would have been so high, I would have booked a modest hotel or motel in Springfield in the first place, saving me about $500. I was systematically checking hotels farther and father away from Northampton, and only settled on this one because it was such a bargain, but Springfield is almost an equal distance from Northampton.
The employees at my replacement hotel informed me that this is a common trick employed in the hotel industry. They said that hotels will realize that it's a busy weekend and attempt to retroactively raise prices on people who have already booked. They specifically mentioned that Hotel UMass does this all the time, and that they also intentionally overbook for busy weekends.
I would avoid booking here altogether. The fact that they only use their own website for bookings gives them the power/excuse to claim a price change at any time. If you book a hotel through a third party website, there is at least an official process that the hotel would need to go through to change your reservation. If you are arriving during college graduation season and need to save money, look at chain hotels/motels and places in Springfield, MA. You can plan to rent a car, take the PVTA, or take Ubers, which were actually very cheap in this area.
- Stephanie (10/5): - Wonderful staff!!
- Dawnmarie (10/5): - We have stayed at Hotel UMass many times over the past four years and have always had a positive experience. Easy in and out parking, walkable to areas of the campus, clean, and great light breakfast options
- Dolores (10/5): - Very nice amenities, coffee, water, cookies, etc.
- Kevin (10/5): - It’s quite a long walk from the garage parking to the hotel elevator. It’s only a problem checking in and out because the luggage carts are in the hotel lobby. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful.
- notoftheworld (10/5): Nice hotel on campus of UMASS Amherst - Nicely run hotel in conjunction with the university hotel and management program. All student employees who are most helpful. Plenty of places to eat below the hotel. The hotel is centrally located and has indoor parking available. Rooms are comfortable and very quiet. Can't go wrong if you have an event at UMASS Amherst.
- Robert (10/5): - Nice room. Modern
- Courtney (10/5): - We had a great stay. Would definitely recommend
