Guest Reviews
- Colin (8/5): - An additional easy chair in the bedroom would be good, one chair between two is poor, especially for we old and decrepit customers.
- David (8/5): - Good breakfast, lovely evening meal, staff friendly, hotel ideal location, young man in restaurant in the morning was lovely friendly and polite ,just a nice stay ,need more coffee and milk in rooms
- Alison (8/5): - The staff here are really nice and helpful. The place is comfortable and well located on the road but still quiet for a decent night sleep. The place is looking a bit run down, housekeeping do a great job (clean bed, surfaces, bathroom, towels) but it could do with a deep clean (stains on walls, clean the carpets etc) but its a very reasonable price
- Lynn (10/5): - Friendly and helpfull especially Paul, wonderful fool, excellent decor and atmosphere in the restaurant area. A beautiful setting with convenient public transport
- Ilona (10/5): - Great room , excellent stuff , delicious breakfast, beautiful place to stop.
- M (10/5): - No problems very efficient handling
- Harish (10/5): - C
- Ian (8/5): Good base for visiting the east coast. - The hotel is well situated for visiting Whitby and Saltburn, pleasant bar and dining area. The food was excellent a d reasonable price as well. Well worth a visit and we shall certainly be calling again.
- Neil (6/5): - Excellent staff but poor quality expensive food. Very uncomfortable bed
- R P (10/5): - Very friendly welcome - an excellent place to stay and restaurant was great too.
- Anne marie (10/5): - First time at Cross Keys; room was perfect. Food was lovely & staff so friendly. Manager Ben helped us book another stay & was really helpful. Outside the building very neat & quiet.
- Hilary (8/5): - The Cross Keys was just what we needed when we were visiting relatives. Staff were very friendly, room and beds very comfortable and the breakfasts were excellent.
- Richard (10/5): - Made very welcome
- Ralph (8/5): - We liked everything.
- A (10/5): - Easy check in, nice room
- Mark (6/5): It’s not the ‘mmmlll - It was ok - your on the main road if you have roadside view. Not ideal for a comfortable stay! Staff were ok but Anthony has 5 stars from me!
- Shannon (10/5): - Beautiful place!! The grounds are well maintained and peaceful
- Verified traveler (10/5): Hotel stay - Hotel was very nice & staff were helpful
food was good only thing I would say was that drinks were overpriced whether it was alcoholic/non-alcoholic
- Sarah (2/5): Disappointing - Very spacious room but unfortunately VERY small radiator to heat the room was not sufficient at all!
Very few plug sockets.
Room was in very poor condition, thread bare carpets and dirty walls, cracks in ceilings, taps didn’t have covers on them!
There was enough teabags and coffee bags for 4cups but sugar and milk for just 1 cup! Very poor show and real minimum effort!
Shower was THE WORST I have experienced and I travel a lot. It’s generous of me to say it was a dribble!
Difficult nights sleep because the hall lights were left on l night and there are big cracks around the door which lit up my room like a Christmas tree!
If you’re not putting basic things in the room nor keeping the room to a basic standard to save money then maybe save money with automatic lights?!
Loud banging doors all night and early morning as no soft closures on the doors.
Food was very basic so i personally thought was over priced and there was no choice for any healthy meal!
How this hotel has the rating it does which at the time of posting this was 9+ I am at a loss! I will say I really should have checked the reviews!
Definitely would not recommend and would not stay here again. I could have complained yes but now looking at the reviews I can see plenty of people have so they’re aware of all the faults.
I will say a plus though, they have a decent hair dryer…..
- Verified traveler (4/5): Average hotel - Warm friendly welcome and overall good service from the staff. However remember to bring some ear plugs as the hotel is situated on a main road.
The biggest let down is the shower lacks any decent water pressure. I have had better showers at campsites then at this hotel. Also, there was dirt falling from the ceiling in bathroom, which appeared to be coming from the fan, which shows how often they get cleaned / serviced.
Overall an average hotel which could do with some investment.
- Vernon (8/5): - Looked after extremely well. Not certain about the lack of amenities in the double room for disabled people. Nowhere to hang bathroom robes or wash bags and for a non-disabled person the wash basin was extremely low, small and difficult as an older person to use.
- Verified traveler (4/5): OK if nowhere else to stay - otherwise avoid - No welcoming communication from reception or bar staff - the hotel management seem to have employed a skimping strategy in terms of quality and quantity on basics:- towels, toilet paper, toiletries, tea, coffee, (over) cooked breakfast ingredients served without any pleasantries or flair.
Overpriced for what was provided / served. A couple of staff were pleasant enough but most were pretty ignorant and dismissive - an easy fix with a bit of basic training and occasional but effective supervision.
- David (8/5): Short work break - Nice warm room, comfortable bed plenty of space. Excellent breakfast. Dinner at night also good and hand pulled beer is well kept.
- Emma (10/5): - Great price, convenient for hospital visiting
- Adrienne (10/5): - Very good price, clean and staff very pleasant. Only downside was the noise from the road from about 6am. Would ask for a room at the back if I stayed again.
- lee (10/5): Good - Great service .. rooms a little dated
- John (10/5): - This hotel was perfect for the very short stay we had overnight on 29th December
- Mark (10/5): - There is nothing to dislike staff are very friendly and welcoming this is my go to place when im in this area
- Mark (10/5): - The friendliness is outstanding location is good easy to find made us feel very welcome and pricing is very good
- Gary (10/5): Spot on as usual - My go to hotel when staying round Guisborough/Middlesbrough area for work ,meals are lovely also breakfast is spot on
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Dirty rooms.
- Gavlar (10/5): - Stayed for two nights, Great service by the bar maid had a good laugh with her on the Thursday night 31/10/24 and the chef before his shift and the manager at night. 01/11/24 Nearly missed out on my breakfast in the morning as I had a few too many to drink the night before and I was late. Chef agreed to still make me breakfast which I was really grateful for, the waitress at breakfast didn’t offer me any drinks and if I didn’t pretty much beg her to ask the chef if they could still make me breakfast she would of gladly let me walk out not very friendly. Only thing I would say is to extend the hours of breakfast in the morning. Overheard that a manager had made one of the other staff members cry twice. If this was the lady that served me breakfast, I’d book your ideas up. I’m a manager and you treat your fellow employees with the same amount of respect you expect to be treated with. That way you get better productivity and it’s just a better atmosphere for everyone and who knows you might even crack a smile. Room was great bed was huge and after working away it’s always nice to find a bath as a lot of hotels have done away with them. Room was quiet apart from the road outside, nothing you can do about that though. Rated a 5 star out of respect for the nice staff. Good on you for being chatty and welcoming keep up the good work everyone loves a smile when they first walk into a hotel. Also to the staff member who has been made cry, your good at your job keep it up rise above it
- Kevin (4/5): Crap - No store room to drop luggage off while we waited to check-in grandson used vending machine to get a packet of crisps only to find there was no coins in the machine to give him his change complained to reception only to be told there was nothing they could do and to ring the number on vending machine to complain so the crisps cost £5 then we went for a meal in the restaurant where our order was taken after waiting 30mins the waitress in formed us the order hadnt gone through so had to reorder and waited another 30mins very poor
- Kimberley (10/5): - Friendly Staff, great central location for our stay. Quiet and clean.
- John (10/5): Nice place to stay - Very friendly staff. The room was spacious and clean. Lots of parking space. I didn't use the bar but it looked very welcoming.
- les (8/5): - Great location, room and staff very good, evening meal with guests very disappointing,
- Colin (10/5): - Very friendly staff. Nice and quiet. Lovely breakfasts
- Mark (8/5): Poor signal/ wifi - it has a bed and shower - Stay was good other than wifi signal is weak and kicks you off every 30 minutes , also no phone signal so wouldn’t recommend if you need internet to work.
It had a bed and a shower :)
- Ruth (10/5): - The staff are really excellent. They cannot do enough for you. Terribly hot in the room though Had to have the fan on all night.
- Gavin (10/5): - Stayed at Cross Keys for Summer Sounds festival, nice rooms and slept well. Enjoyed the Speckled Hen on draft in beer garden
- Jane (8/5): Comfy bed - The bed was amazingly comfy, tea and coffee hostess included.
However the room was quite tired, we had a cracked bathroom sink, mold in the bathroom and very visible water leakage signs of a leaky roof and mold in the corner of the bedroom
- Simon (10/5): - Easy for car access. Lovely place, good value, great bedroom. Bathroom a little bit tired looking. Odd smell in the stairwell to first floor. Delicious breakfast served by lovely staff. Would go there again
- Courteney (2/5): - There was damp and mould in the bedroom and bathroom, as well as a damp clothes smell in the hallway and stairwell. Would not stay again
- MOIRA (10/5): - Breakfast could have been a little better
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Pleasant country pub with a decent back garden, food and service were good.
It’s on a dual carriageway, so can hear traffic noise and the bathroom and shower need renovation.
- Gerard (8/5): - ROOM LOOKING WELL USED - READY FOR IMPROVEMENT - EG. DOOR HANDLES/LOCK - BUT NOTHING SERIOUSLY WRONG
- Gerard (10/5): - The room was spotless, staff helpful and overall hotel was welcoming. Beautiful garden and patio. A little tricky leaving and facing the dual carriageway to turn right.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Poor - No one available in reception to check in, waited 10 mins and had to find someone in the bar.
Black Mould on ceiling in the bathroom and above the bed.
Shower very poor water pressure and not very hot.
Very noisy room due to traffic on road and too warm to keep windows closed
Overall not worth the £90 paid
- David (8/5): - Very obliging staff. Even though they were very busy in the restaurant. Would stay again
- Kerry (10/5): - Restaurant is very nice, beds comfy, needs usb charger port in rooms
- Michael (10/5): - Quaint and quiet old building that serves nice food.
- Craig (10/5): - Very nice and warm
- Lauren (4/5): Old and dirty. - Booked a family room for 2 adults, 2 kids, but apparently that was lost in translation and they had to make a bed up when we got there. The room itself was old, plaster hanging off the wall, black mould round the bath, and very old, worn cabinets that definitely need replacing. Wouldn't stay again in a hurry. Staff all seemed annoyed by our presence.
- Simon (10/5): Confy hotel - Comfy hotel, quite, friendly staff
- Jason (10/5): - Great staff - Good quiet room (as requested). Good food. Very comfortable stay. Will return.
- David (10/5): Would recommend the Cross Keys to anyone . - Was a very good stay, staff very friendly, especially Eileen and Brad. They made a big fuss over my father who had turned 100yrs old, they made him feel very special.
- Robert (8/5): - Friendly staff, nice restaurant and great breakfast. Room was quite nice but bathroom quite dated and needing some repairs.
- Mark (6/5): - The service from all staff was excellent. The team was genuinely friendly and helpful.
The breakfasts were very good.
The big let down was the room. Although it was comfortable and had been cleaned well (clean bedding, clean carpets, clean furniture and clean bathroom)
1. There had plainly been a big water leak around the window and the wallpaper had a slick of dried water stains runnels across the full width end full height of he room, making it fell grubby
2. The bathroom sink had a big crack in the full length of ts base.
3. The facias in the bathroom were peeling away.
4. The bath had some big chips in the enamel with the rusted iron of the bath showing through.
Although as said the room was clean, these ssues combined to make it "feel" grubby and dwn-at-heel
- Verified traveler (6/5): Ok but issues - Staff are friendly and provide good service, bathrooms in room are tired, room 11 tried to shower on 2 mornings at 630am, no hot water and water pressure is very poor, left a message with reception, after 1st time nothing done to improve it for the next day
- Becky (8/5): Good location for work - Friendly staff, great stop off for work.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Middlesborough stopover … - Good location & but we may have been unlucky but room was very tired & in need of refresh. Bathroom/shower toilet in particular. Staff & service very very friendly & welcoming though.
- Matt (8/5): Nice stay, nice staff - Staff were lovely and the hotel was very clean.
The room was a little noisy as I think I may of been in a room near some kind of generator as i kept hearing a noise stopping and starting but I soon fell asleep
- Chris (6/5): - It was all ok
- Michael (10/5): - The property has been renovated in an amazing way to meet the 18 th century farmhouse effect. Everything was clean the staff were amazing and welcoming chocolates appreciated
- Verified traveler (6/5): Fairly priced, reasonable quality, condition fair - It's a reasonably priced average quality place. I'd probably stay again. The parking situation was good. The bed was comfortable (Premier Inn level). It had tea/coffee facilities in-room and an iron/ironing-board. That was the good stuff.
The bad - noise levels from neighbouring rooms was terrible. I heard their TV's, their normal talking (I don't mean shouting, just regular talking), I heard people above walking around. Overall, you won't have a quiet experience. Luckily for me I'm someone that can wear earplugs to drown out the noise.
Also bad, the condition of the room seemed like it was 20 years since it last had a refresh of the paint. Various marks on the walls. Underneath the bed seemed like it hadn't seen a vacuum cleaner in at least year. The bathroom (and parts of the bedroom) seemed like they might have mold on them, or just dirt, or the paint had chipped away revealing black from underneath. I don't know.
The shower is an in-bath affair and the water pressure is so low that it only just reaches you. The hot water at the sink is so ridiculously hot I'm sure you could make a cup of tea with it. Out of the 6 nights I stayed, for 3 of them the room wasn't serviced. It was over Christmas though and that didn't bother me.
Actually, when I said I'd probably stay again, I've talked myself out of it. Even with the 10% discount I was offered for my next visit.
- Heath (6/5): Average - Very nice hotel , very clean, lovely bed linen and clean fluffy new towels, great selection on coffee station but very disappointed with decor and the bathroom having mould on the ceiling
- Marion (8/5): - Good Location and good service.
Unfortunately we were in a front bedroom facing the road and therefore traffic noise was bad.
- Diane (10/5): - It was easy to find with plenty of parking. Rooms were clean, huge bed, so comfy,. very quiet, although near a main road you couldn't hear traffic noise.
The staff very helpful, let us take an ice cold water jug back to the room for the night.
Breakfast was huge, we had full English.
We had one dinner during our 2 night staywhich was really delicious. All staff so helpul.
We will definitely return
- John (10/5): - Friendly staff and clean rooms.
- David (8/5): - Staff polite and easy to talk to, Room was clean.
The room we were given was close to the dual carriageway and proven to be a bit noisy - some people would not be bothered but we prefer quiet. I would definitely stay again but would ask for one of the rooms towards the back of the building.
- Brenda (8/5): Comfortable & friendly - Friendly helpful staff. Comfortable, well equipped room
- Glyn (8/5): - Staff could not be more helpful. The food was fantastic and the restaurant and bar is welcoming. I used the hotel as a base to visit family as it’s a great location. My only (small) gripe is that the rooms are looking a little tired and could do with a revamp. But I will certainly stay again.
- Ian (8/5): - Good food at a good price.
Property in need of a good renovation. Bathroom door would not close, sink taps difficult/hard to operate and bed too high.
- Roy (10/5): - Nice restaurant area with good food at a reasonable price, friendly staff. Comfortable, clean rooms. I have stayed there 5 times this year and have no negative issues and I look forward to returning soon.
- Stephen (8/5): Nice hotel with friendly staff. - The Hotel was pleasant and most of the staff were friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable but the bathroom requires a complete refurbishment. The shower head fell off the stand as soon as water passed through it. The washbasin was cracked, the toilet seat needed adjustment and the w.c. reluctantly flushed. However, this did not spoil our stay, we just had to use the bath each morning. We were travelling as two couples and were surprised to find our rooms separated by the length of the accommodation block. One room at the far end downstairs and the other at the top of the stairs on the second floor. We did ask if it were possible to exchange one of the rooms but were told by the receptionist it was not possible. Our friends room overlooked the dual carriageway and unfortunately were disturbed most nights by the traffic noise. These comments are intended to help the hotel improve the experience for their customers and I can say that the overall impression of the hotel was good. The breakfast was extremely good. I would stay again, if in the area.
- lesley (10/5): - Staff were approachable and really nice - comfortable stay... I would definitely stay there again
- Paul (10/5): - Helpful and friendly staff
- Sharon (10/5): - This property is set in beautiful surroundings at the back with beautiful green gardens and tables to sit and enjoy the sunshine.
Although there is a busy carriageway to the front aspect which was quite noisy.
All staff were lovely and super friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Beautiful property pleasant stay Thank you
- Glenn (10/5): - Staff very polite and accommodating. Food wonderful our room was lovely.
- Moira (10/5): Comfortable and welcoming stay - Twin room at rear of property, beds comfy,bath/shower with toiletries, adequate tea/coffee.Staff very friendly, professional and attentive to needs.Bar/restaurant area superb with outdoor seating too.Good choice of food on menu and served piping hot.Recommend hotel easy access to NE coast and A19.
- Sally (4/5): Needs overhaul - Mould up walls and on ceiling.
Old shower.
Very tired and old.
Very noisy from road outside.
Bed comfy, room clean and lovely staff.
Needs a complete overhaul.
- Dawn (8/5): - We received a warm, friendly greeting. The room was well equipped and comfortable. Our only problem was toilet seat that moved and lid wouldn’t stay up. Other than that we enjoyed our stay. Breakfast good, dinner options great too.
- andrew (6/5): - a tired hotel in terms of accomodation, but bar and food top notch
- S (6/5): A couple of days walking and sightseeing - The hotel is in a good location for sightseeing around Guisborough, Staithes, Roseberry Topping.
The staff were friendly. The breakfast, which was included, was delicious and catered for our dietary needs (dairy free)
The room, though comfortable, was tired looking, with mould on the windowsill and signs of condensation running down the walls. The bathroom was very tired looking; the shower wasn't powerful and the toilet lid/seat wouldn't stay up!
- Claire (10/5): - just ideal quite and friendly
- Peter (10/5): - Good rooms and bar/restaurant.
- Anthony (8/5): - When we are in the area we always if possible stay at the Cross Keys. It is convenient for what we want always friendly and reasonably priced. All the staff are a credit to the company.
- Peter (8/5): Business trip - Short business stay. staff very friendly and helpful.
- Val (10/5): - .
- Andrew (8/5): - Family stay to break journeys
- Victoria (6/5): - Shower was more like a drizzle, bed not very comfy and bathroom very tired and tatty.
- Jason (8/5): - Clean and comfortable room nice and warm and quiet the staff very helpful and informative about local attractions and information
- Dorothy (8/5): - Everything
Nothing
- Rebecca (10/5): - Clean, easy check in and central to what we needed.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely stay in reasonable priced hotel - We really enjoyed our stay, staff were so helpful on checkin as there had been a mix up with our booking status by Hotels.com. Good breakfasts with excellent choices. We'd requested a quiet room at the back of the hotel which we had. Enjoyed a 3 course evening meal there too which was very reasonably priced.
- O (10/5): Great experience - Short stay for family visit so didn't try the restaurant. Bed room excellent, Hypnos mattress very comfortable. Bath room was a little "tired" and could do with a bit of a re-vamp but that's all. Very clean, will definitely stay again.
- Stephen (8/5): Fine venue at a good price. - Functional hotel at the right price nothing untoward.
- Gurdip (10/5): Amazing - Very nice hotel with low budget and it was amazing
- Chris (8/5): Friendly and comfortable - Great welcome , efficient and friendly- got the requested room downstairs- room clean but could do with a little refurbishment- plenty of parking space
- Mr DAVID (8/5): - Would be nice to have a room on other side as it sounds like a motorway on the road side and traffic starts quite early in the morning.
The hotel is slightly further away from my job but the surrounding areas are great for a walk after work.
Food is good but the service on Tuesday night was appalling. It wasn't busy but i was put in a quiet corner out of sight and ignored. If I hadn't had been staying then i would have left without paying ! and no one would have noticed ;-(
