Guest Reviews
- Mary (8/5): Lovely staff, good service, clean and pleasant hotel. - The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We were travelling with our two small dogs and they were welcomed too. The food was good. The room very clean and comfortable. No view but we had lots of space and sea views are available in other rooms. No issues to report.
- ALISTER (6/5): - Staff and location meals were great The place is tired needs a refresh door into kitchen had a huge boot print on it
- Michael (8/5): Great stay, staff very welcoming and attentive -
- Johanne (9/5): Very nice property, would recommend for a short stay - Nice hotel, connected pub and restaurant very good too. Room was spacious and bed comfy. Shower was weak. Quite a walk into Helensburgh town.
- Paul (7/5): - Food was very nice. Service was slow.
- Alice (7/5): - The staff were very friendly, the room was nicely decorated, well kitted out and comfortable, and the food options were good value. The bathroom felt tired and the shower didnt work very well, the rooms were definitely not soundproof (I was woken up both mornings by an alarm in the room next door and a few times in the night with people moving about).
Other than that, lovely hotel and I'd still recommend it!
- Alice (1/5): -
- Jonathan (9/5): Great place with nice rooms and decent food - Welcoming, clean and functional. Used as stop over on walk.
- Emma (7/5): - Really nice staff
great breakfast
- Mark (9/5): -
- Stuart (9/5): Good value in a decent location - A good location just outside the town, with plenty of easy parking.
The room was a decent size, and seemed to have been recently refurbished. Shower was good and the bathroom was in excellent condition. There was a desk which is always appreciated and plenty power outlets in sensible places. The room was a little hot/stuffy which disturbed my sleep a little. The wifi is free and fast but has some strange filtering on it, blocking access to legitimate, perfectly innocent websites.
- Ashley (6/5): - Location and view Our room wasn’t ready for 2pm it was an hour later our shower was awful and made strange noises ( room 5 ) but beds were comfortable
- Josie (10/5): - Lovely room, double bed very comfy, room part was tidy, clean and in good condition The bathroom, the window with the vent was awful, wood rotting away, should be tiled not wood as is right near to shower so gets wet and the paint was peeling away and the wood rotting.
- Callum (7/5): Comfortable and did the job for our one night stay - without exception, lovely staff - Clean with a bit of character Extractor fan outside bedroom window and poor water pressure in the shower
- Sue (8/5): Good location. Polite staff. Good food for the price - Location.
Met expectations Decor slightly tired
- Janet (1/5): -
- Yvonne (5/5): Nice but could be improved . Staffing seemed to be short. - Very convenient for entertainment and lovely walks Bathroom was mouldy and breakfast very disorganised . Room facilities lacking.
- Eve (7/5): -
- Kevin (8/5): - The room was fine and.clean pet friendly ideal. The breakfast
- jennifer (7/5): Decent for the short time I stayed - Location was good! Room was clean and met expectations. The automated voice that answers the phone isnt clear on what you are ment to do. I only seen a member of staff when I was checking in other than that I wouldnt of known anyone actually worked in the hotel.
- Lou (9/5): - Great location.
Food in the bar good and reasonably priced. No one on reception.
On the morning we left after ringing for assistance 3 times and walking around looking for a staff member left key card on reception desk.
- Tone in the zone (7/5): Young staff very friendly and willing we felt maybe at times they were under pressure. - Breakfast choices were good. Evening meals good choice and standard. The location was good. Comfortable bed, view from room very pleasant across the Loch. The room could do with a refurb and bit of TLC.
Flaking paint on bathroom ceiling and bedroom window cill. Mould in the shower. Shelf over bathroom sink very loose. Toilet seat also loose.S
- Phillips (2/5): Nice location & staff. Food also good. Rooms v poor - a travel lodge or Premier Inn would have been much better - Location Bathroom in 1 room smelt of drains and the mattress in the other smelt bad.
- Sinéad (8/5): - Really friendly staff, great location. The only thing that put a dampener on our stay was the breakfast. It's laid out on a table that is too small for the number of people trying to get at it at the same time, making it frustrating trying to get toast, tea etc. There seemed not enough staff on both mornings as the food and drinks weren't replaced quickly. Again a bit frustrating.
- John (4/5): Nice location, unfortunately down to staff moaning about residents I wouldn’t return - Good location in the town for walking distance to shops, bars and restaurants I was really disappointed with my stay overall, particularly when it came to cleanliness and the breakfast experience. The room itself was not up to standard at all — it was noticeably dusty, and there were hairs left on the bathroom tiles, which immediately gave the impression that it hadn’t been properly cleaned before our arrival. It’s the kind of basic detail you expect any hotel to get right, so that was quite off-putting from the start.
Breakfast was equally underwhelming. There was very little available,we also had to wait an unreasonably long time for any staff to appear, which made the whole experience feel disorganised and neglected. It shouldn’t take that long just to get basic service in the morning.
The only redeeming part of breakfast for me was the poached eggs, which were actually quite well done — nicely cooked and enjoyable. Unfortunately, that was the only highlight. My partner ordered potato scones, and they looked as though they had simply been thrown into a toaster rather than properly cooked or heated on a griddle. They were dry, unappetising, and clearly lacked any care in preparation.
Overall, the stay felt below standard in both cleanliness and service. With more attention to detail and better staff presence, it could be improved, but as it stands, I wouldn’t rush back.
One staff member moaned about people going for breakfast at 9:30am when it was on until 10am. This was very off putting
- Washington (8/5): -
- Gary (7/5): We didn't realise how far out of Helensburgh the hotel was. - The breakfast was good in the size of portions but the food was very bland.
However we had a meal in the restaurant at night and that was delicious
- Steven (8/5): Fantastic time well worth the visit - Lovely location great food and staff Bit dated outside could do with paint and new windows
- Neil (7/5): Great stop off point and great place to visit Loch Lomond - The food was good and the staff friendly. It was an ideal stop off point on the way to Oban. The only place to sit with the dog was in the bar area, which was noisy and aimed at men who enjoyed sport on the tv.
- Graham (8/5): - Breakfast very good and evening meals good value for money and very tasty. Staff polite, friendly and very helpful. WiFi free and easy to access but poor reception in areas.
- derrick (3/5): - Bathroom was smelling unpleasant which made the stay very uncomfortable.
No heating
- Andy (10/5): Great location, friendly staff and lovely food. - Great location, friendly staff and great food.
- Lynne (5/5): Adequate but would not return or recommend - Good location for navy homecoming. Room 19. Very cold due to gap around window frame. Unable to close bathroom door,
- Lucy (7/5): Needed somewhere to stay close up the navy base and it was close by. Food was good and the staff were friendly. - The family room was a good size Could be doing with a little tlc, fixing chipped paint etc
- Nicky (8/5): -
- Christina (10/5): -
- Deborah (9/5): - Nice hotel, pleasant staff, good breakfast, nice restaurant, reasonsbly priced, would like to return.
- Clémentine (8/5): -
- Caitriona (10/5): Perfect - Excellent Not applicable
- Nigel (10/5): - Great Breakfast 👍,all food good value
- Diane (9/5): -
- Bruce (9/5): -
- paterson (6/5): Loved everything bar breakfast - Poor quality sausage and bacon The breakfast
- Morag (5/5): - Staff where helpful bed was comfortable Room smelled badly of damp , we had 1 hr wait for breakfast looked like very under staffed
- Ken (7/5): Enjoyable stay lovely views.food was popping hot of a good standard and friendly staff - Evening meal and breakfast both of a good standard all presented well and hot food.
The room was a little bit tired however the building it's self is quite old.bedding and towels all very clean. The overall standard of the room was acceptable.but with the building being old there is certainly some areas which are in need of some tlc.
- Susan J (5/5): If it had been on a bed only basis, I would have given higher marks. - Willing to accommodate us a little bit earlier as we had a Workshop starting at 2pm Breakfast could have been hotter, also water for tea was not boiling hot. Coffee ran out and quite a long wait to replenish the large coffee thermos as only one member of staff serving breakfasts. Tablet providing iinfo on allergens had not been put on charge after evening service so delay with that, although not entirely breakfast staffs' fault.
- jason (8/5): - Nice old place with a good bar. Bit tired in places but nothing that would stop me booking it again
- Jonathan Ball home (8/5): -
- Colin (7/5): - The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The room was not warm, the radiator not operating correctly in the Eagle suite.
- Katie (8/5): -
- Vicky (8/5): I Would stay again. - I loved the property because we stay often for family gatherings it’s easy and comfortable
100% the property has got he comfiest beds what a great sleep I had!! The bar staff had a very tired and can’t be bothered attitude
Although the wee lady from reception she was lovely she was bubbly and very helpful . The night porter was very helpful he got me a glass of icy water and was very friendly.
My sisters room looked very tired the window was very flaky and there shower had black bits.
- Simon (10/5): - Good value for money
- Chambers (7/5): -
- Frazer (5/5): If you can’t make the stay they charge you but do not issue a receipt to enable you to claim your money back from expens - It’s in a good location They have never sent me a receipt for the stay
- Simon (8/5): -
- Donna (8/5): -
- allisonf625 (8/5): Excellent lunch. Great location. - Lovely lunch. Staff friendly and attentive. Food imaginative and good portion sizes. Very reasonably priced. Restaurant warm and welcoming. Will return! One small suggestion, please change your background music to something more salubrious!
- Timber Traveller (8/5): Good hotel, needs to sort its plumbing out - Good breakfast. Nice room. Friendly staff Dreadful electric shower.
- nikki (7/5): - Staff friendly, cheerful and helpful. Evening meal was very tasty with a good choice on the menu. Breakfast was also good with plenty to choose from. Bedroom could do with an upgrade, paint/plaster crumbling off some of the walls, net curtain at window could do with a clean, window could do with a replacement as gaps in it so made room cold and black mould and mildew on bottom and middle of window frame. Radiator in bedroom wasn't working and only one bedside lamp on one side of double bed and every so often a loud glugging sound coming from bathroom sink so had to close bathroom door at night to muffle sound. I did report the radiator and window to receptionist on our checkout the next day.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Highly recommended - We liked the location. The comfort, very clean room The friendliness of staff. The price. Alot of stairs to the top. We were only informed of this on arrival. Would have chose a room on lower floor had we known.
- EWEN (8/5): NOTHING PRETENTIOUS BUT WARM WELCOME - i enjoyed dinner with wine and a very good quality breakfast, served by young, friendly helpful staff; also warm welcome at reception with checkin and out simple. A convenient venue for Helensburgh Cricket and Rugby Club at Ardencaple where West Bowl rugby final was played.Home side won 25-7 . Local town, rail station and Faslane Naval Base within easy reach. Puddling outside reception to cross for my taxi- but it had been raining hard!
- Barry (5/5): Nice staff working in a run down hotel - Location fine, staff friendly though short staffed at the bars and dining Room was grubby, en suite was grubby, dirty water from the hot tap, no hot water from the hot tap, no heating working in the room or bathroom, very poor water pressure in the shower. Bedroom very cold and condensation all over the window. The hotel as a whole needs a refurb
- Bernadette (5/5): Bathroom - The staff wer great the food was lovely
The room was clean but the bathroom was awful The bathroom
- David (10/5): -
- Mark (7/5): -
- Derek (10/5): -
- colin-hood1971 (10/5): Fantastic staff and great for a couple of nights - Just back from a 2 night stay and everything was great, room was spotless.Annie who welcomed us and our dogs is a credit to the hotel, she always seemed to be there morning noon and night but nothing was too much and all the other members of staff were very welcoming and friendly.Great choice of breakfast and everything seemed freshly cooked and great quality, poached eggs were cooked to perfection. We also had dinner 1 of the nights and both meals were spot on and its nice theres a section you can sit in with the dogs.
Location is great and the views over the water are stunning. Also its a nice 25 minute walk along the front into Helensburgh.
Will definitely be back.
- Su (8/5): Great Bed and Spacious Room - Smart looking room and great location just outside the town and next to the beach.
Great big TV all working well.
Lovely large bed - and spacious room as we were in the family room. Lots of seating for two people.
The price we paid was very reasonable.
We paid a good price from a lovely full breakfast.
No annoying ceiling lights.
Reception was helpful but not always there so sometimes you had to wait or hunt out staff - they were understaffed but not their fault. On closer inspection the room was a bit tired looking and needed a bit of TLC in places.
There were no biscuits and no box for the tea and coffee sachets etc. - just stuffed into the cups.
The shower was very noisy and didn't seem to work properly though both of us managed to get some sort of shower.
Tiny sink with no plug and the door to the bathroom couldn't be closed from the outside so light came through at night - the curtains in the room too were not completely blacking out the room.
Small details but they did add up. Nevertheless they didn't spoil out wee break.
- Timber Traveller (7/5): Friendly and comfortable hotel - Room, staff and food all nice. Room. Some of the rooms on the first floor facing the sea have dreadful electric showers. T
- Wilson (9/5): I would recommend this hotel to other either for work or leisure - Great location
Good staff friendly Stayed in at the front of the building (17) shower was the only thing. It ran hot and cold never stayed at one temperature!
- Tetiana (10/5): Great for a family stay. - Great location and friendly stuff.
- Ben (8/5): Very good - Good breakfast. Nice and competent staff. Sash windows rattled in wind
- Eileen (5/5): - Lovely location Storage space in bedroom very limited
- marion (10/5): -
- Audrey (9/5): Good stay, good value, friendly, would recommend - We had a huge room which my husband loved, but then realised it was the disabled room! The bathroom had a seat in the shower which was in the way, but the staff tied it up so we could stay in the room, which made my husband happy as we’d already unpacked. I thought the bed should have had more pillows and a thicker duvet but actually it was perfect. Good value for money, and would definitely use again. Friendly staff. Good service including breakfast on Christmas Day, which was really appreciated.
- Debra (10/5): - The Staff, especially Gordon and the restaurant/ bar team. They were so very friendly and accommodating. The hotel was full of warmth, very cosy and fulll of history. We didn't want to leave. No biscuits on the Hospitality tray. These wee touches make all the difference . .
- Silvia (6/5): -
- Jev (7/5): -
- Yvonne (10/5): A very enjoyable stay - The location was nice and breakfast was good
- Keith (8/5): The hotel had welcoming staff, quirky-named rooms, atmospheric bar/dining spaces & good location. - Breakfast very good both mornings - we tried different options. Staff were friendly and helpful. One slight moan - bottleneck at the self-service hot drinks station, which has been a long-running thing with me in hotels, at buffets etc. By standing all the hot water/tea/coffee pots next to each other, you ensure only one person can operate at a time, so others hang around waiting. Space the pots out along the table with cups and saucers in between and put the milks and sugars further along past them so that someone else can move in and starting filing their cup. And leave space so that if you are filling two cups - as many visitors do - there is room to navigate. Not a major upheaval needed, surely?
- Petrus Johannes (9/5): -
- Gregory (9/5): -
- Elaine (7/5): Nice stay, but need to look at facilities to accommodate the number of persons staying. - Dinner and Breakfast were really good. Good menu to choose from. Beds are comfy, and spotless. Good seating areas inside and out, with a beautiful view. Good amount of car park spaces Facilities in the room -tea/coffee facilities looked set up for 1 person, 1 teabag, sachet of coffee, 1 cup, 1 glass, 1 towel. This was a couples weekend away. Had to go down to the bar to get extras
- Andrea (7/5): -
- Biagioni (9/5): Fantastic location, lovely staff, great breakfast - Location A bit tired looking
- Welsh (8/5): -
- Kelly (7/5): -
- Beata (8/5): -
- alistair (9/5): Will stay again - Nice rooms , good great Breakfast poor
- anna (8/5): We will visit the place again! - The location and the peaceful environment.
- LETITIA (6/5): -
- Laura (9/5): Nice! - The location was lovely. Staff were friendly. NYE celebrations were great. The window in our room was really loose & rattled a lot.
- Kenneth (6/5): -
- Kerry (9/5): -
- bryan (7/5): Decent couple of days slightly spoiled by the points mentioned. - Great staff, warm clean room with comfy bed, nice food at reasonable price. Compact room and smallish bed ( comfy though). Sewage smell in bathroom (disappeared after first day), useless shower with little water and fluctuating temperature.
Seemed to run out of certain food as restricted menu on second night, and no bread for breakfast toast. Disappointing for an experienced hotel.
- Gillian (8/5): Relaxed stay 😌 - Lovely hotel in a great location staff lovely quiet hotel would definitely stay again. Great value for money. Window in room didn't fully close had to put something over it as it was very cold out also radiator not fully working.
- Terence (3/5): Room 20 not suitable for paying guests - Food at restaurant Room 20 - no view from window only extraction units which made a continuous noise throughout our stay
- Jackie (5/5): -
- Elizabeth (7/5): Nice hotel in a great location - Room was nice and clean, bed was comfy good bar area and lovely restaurant area We missed breakfast, we were not informed when we arrived it finished at 9am
- Sandy (7/5): It was warm and comfortable but avoid breakfast at all costs! - Location was perfect. Room was comfortable with plentiful supply of tea and coffee making stuff. The cooked breakfast verged on being inedible. On the first morning we had the Scottish breakfast. The bacon was so dry it had to be left. The rest was barely warm and also dried out. The following morning I tried the mushroom eggs benedict. The English muffin was so dry and hard you couldn't even cut through with a knife. On the last morning we both stuck to cereal and a pastry! When we mentioned the dry bacon to the waiter he just argued back that some people like it like that!!!!
