We booked this place because breakfast was included and we had to pay upfront with no cancellation policy. THEN they posted they were not serving breakfast anymore. Place was dirty, mould on bathroom shower walls and a cobweb and spiders in the bathroom. Comforter and chairs in the BR were ANCIENT, NO SPRINGS IN THE CHAIR AND THE COMFORTER AT LEAST 30 YEARS OLD. Many rooms were vacant and we felt we had been given the worst one in the place. Does not deserve Canadian Tourist 4.5 star sign!!!!

Comfortable beds, clean room, and charming. The parking was a little difficult to maneuver. Some things were a little rough around the edges. The A/C window unit was clunky and old and quite noisy disrupting sleep.

- steener100 (4/5): Great location, but... - Although "official" check-in time ran from 4-6pm, we had advised the innkeeper a day in advance that we would be there around 8pm. Although we received no reply to that email, we assumed 8pm would be okay as innkeeper had advised in earlier email to let them know if we'd be arriving outside the offical time. The parking area seemed to be full, so we texted the innkeeper from the driveway, and went inside. We were greeted by a rather cranky gentleman, who said there was lots of room to "park on the grass; it's dead anyway." The room was okay, though it could have used a good cleaning: dustbunnies under the beds and around the baseboards, etc. The amenities, e.g., "complimentary toiletries," consisted of a bottle of body wash, a bottle of combination shampoo/conditioner, a well-used sofsoap dispenser, and a stack of Q-tips. A glass, or even a paper cup to allow for a glass of water in the room would have been nice. There was a single-serve coffeemaker on our floor...we discovered that by accident. We were curious about the extension cord in our room that disappeared through a hole in the wall. On the bright side, the beds were very comfortable and the Inn is in a great location, just a very short walk to restaurants and other downtown Stratford attractions. Overall though, it's case of what may once have been historic charm that's now just old.

- Betsy (8/5): Close to everything, check-in could have been smoother. - Everything is close together in Stratford, but it was walking distance to everything, which I appreciated. It was difficult getting in touch with the front desk when we arrived. Neither of the provided cell numbers was working. Fortunately we ran into a very helpful member of staff who managed to find someone, but it was kinda touch and go there for a few minutes.

- R6566NZbarbaram (4/5): "Hands off" approach - The exterior picture of the Inn is misleading as it is now not as well kept up. We spent one night in the "Edwina" room which was tired and worn and badly in need of a face-lift. The king headboard rattled as it was obvious the bed portion was not attached. We could not figure out how to lower the louvred type blinds for night time. A couple of disposable cups for the bathroom would have been greatly appreciated for "pill and brushing teeth" time. Tim lead us upstairs (2nd floor) with no offer to help with our luggage (small overnight bags)...we are in our mid 70s and managed but still the offer to help would have been a nice touch. We never saw him after that. The room TV was unfamiliar to us with no explanation handy as to "what was what". A very "hands off" approach all the way around. We passed on the coffee available in the morning and gladly left for the nearest Tim Horton's. A bleak experience.

- Jeanne (8/5): It’s a nice place to stay for the night if you are seeing plays. - Beautiful antique decor. The billiards room was great fun. No towel service to our rooms even though we were there for seven nights. We had to resort to raiding the cupboard for towels and toilet paper. The attic beds needed evening to compensate for sloped floors. Would have been nice if we could have used the parlour in the afternoon to sit together. As the sunroom is very cold.
- Joe Mulder (4/5): It’s ok - Beautiful old house, lovely grounds, good parking,great location close to shops and theatre ,comfortable beds Inhospitable host, bedroom unclean clearly not properly vacuumed for months, pretty breakfast room serving only coffee despite online references to pastries which info was not corrected by staff, no water glasses in bathroom. For over $200 per night, one expects some small courtesies not in evidence here, sadly.

The only thing is I wish the inn had pointed out the seating areas or mentioned on their website there is a coffee/tea station and fridge microwave we could use. None was mentioned on site and no one showed us seating areas when we arrived and so we crammed to visit in our room. Wish we had known earlier.

- Maria (5/5): Would choose this inn as a last resort. - Location to downtown area restos and theatre. The inn is quite dated but not a major drawback. Our room was very dusty in and around the bed. Understand it is an inn without meals but a decent nights sleep is a minimal expectation. The bed was terrible, soft, squeaked with every movement, not anchored and rolled away from the headboard. We had less than 3 hours of sleep.

Temp was a little warm but there’s an air conditioner so we were very comfortable. There are another set of stairs to get to the room, so be warned. Otherwise, super clean and comfortable stay. Charming old victorian style building. We explored the first floor a bit where there is coffee and pastries in the morning. There is also coffee and a water cooler available on the 2nd floor. Location was close to everything.

- Scott Jorgensen (5/5): Pretty place, check carefully what size bed you are actually getting, do not expect a return email o - A very pretty location and nicely decorated rooms, abundant coffee and tea, historic, and the bathroom was scrupulously clean - very good cleaning staff. Well when we reserved we thought we were getting breakfast but by this year when we went that had been discontinued. No change in price though. We reserved a Queen room. I thought that would have a queen sized bed, it did not. We also figured there would be room for two people to move around, there was not. It was a full sized bed and I could not get to the bathroom if my wife was getting something out of her suitcase, it was a small room. I emailed sing the Booking system, I received no reply. I called the phone number in the bookings listing 4 times, there was no answer. The reason there was no answer is that it is an old manager's number but they did not bother to change it in the bookings data base. the correct number is 519 301 4455, please update so others do not have to be late for dinner as I was because no one would answer the phone. When I sprinted to the hotel I rang twice and called the number on the wall before anyone emerged to help me check in during the very short 2-hour check in window. And the sheets were downright crunchy, anytime either of us moved it was noisy.

When I arrived with my 2 companions we were disappointed to find that the accommodations were not as indicated on Booking.com: "Room description This suite includes 1 living room, 1 separate bedroom and 1 bathroom with a shower and free toiletries. The air-conditioned suite offers a flat-screen TV with streaming services, a seating area, a wardrobe, parquet floors as well as garden views. The unit has 3 beds." There were not two rooms. There was a king size bed and a single bed in the same room i.e. there were not 3 beds. I immediately spoke with the housekeeper, and followed up with her again, later. She was apologetic and was unable to contact any management on our behalf. I also called all phone numers indicated, all of which are "unassigned" or not taking incoming calls. As we had dinner and Theatre booked for the evening, and were unable to communicate with management despite best efforts, we made do with the room despite our disappointment. Subsequent efforts to contact management via telephone, email and booking.com have proven fruitless. Very disappointing.

- Steve (10/5): Beautiful Inn - Beautiful, historic building in a perfect location, just a couple blocks from picturesque downtown Sratford. We walked to everything, including the theaters, cafes, and restaurants. Stone Maiden Inn has beautiful rooms that are comfortable and unique to the building, which was originally an 1800s prestigious hotel. Well kept, interesting past, and perfect location. What more could you want?

Attractive older building. Reception almost non-existent. Host suggested he might be ill. Kept his distance. No welcome info- password for wifi [found it later]. Advertised coffee and tea 24/7. First morning there was none, even by the time we left at 11:30am. Texted numbers listed. Host never responded; backup did. Room was to be "refreshed" daily. Was not. Confirmation email said that rooms accessible for dropping off bags in our room prior to check in at 4 and that tea, coffee and snacks available all day. Was told that snacks not served "for years", no response to our query about early drop off not working. Bedding fine, sheets could be better. Air conditioner a bit loud, but this is a graceful old house and probably the best that could be managed using wall units. Bathroom nice, dryer not adequate: it would shut off after a few minutes. This property has a price that indicated finer attention. Would not repeat.

- Verified traveler (6/5): A tad disappointing - The hotel (at least my room) was very tired...I was disappointed because I booked the room with a deep claw foot tub with the sole purpose of taking a relaxing bath...but the tub condition didn't make that possible. No instructions or welcome note was left in the room regarding wifi, payment, breakfast (or not), history of the building, general rules, thanks for choosing us, etc. I was simply shown to my room, given my key and that was it. No plug near the bed for cellphone. Positives...The bed was comfortable, and it was quiet. Good proximity to downtown. Ample parking (free). If staying for an extended period, there are nice sitting areas outside..and a billiards/game room inside.

Room (including attached washroom) was well put together, clean, with a historic feel and atmosphere. Floors, both in the hallways and the room, could be a little loud at times/in some spots (but that's unavoidable, in my opinion, with a historic house like this).

- Kathy (8/5): - The Stone Maiden is lovely, but the location is a challenge for a visitor with mobility issues and no car. Although close to the centre, there are significant 'hills and dales' to manage. Taxis in Stratford charge a flat $13 regardless of the distance, so that extra cost must be considered. My room was on the third floor with many stairs to climb, so that should be a consideration. Nevertheless, I was very fortuntate to find The Stone Maiden at a late date for booking. Someone must have cancelled.

- Michael and Joanne (10/5): Beautiful old Inn at the heart of Stratford - The location of this beautiful old Inn was excellent. We stayed 6 nights and we walked to most of the theatres, shops and restaurants during our stay. The Inn is very old and beautiful and very well maintained (modern bathrooms, window air conditioners, and ceiling fans). It has the character and charm that you most want in a place like Stratford. There were plenty of beautiful outdoor spaces as well as a billiards room and a screen porch to spend your time when you weren't out and about the town. The innkeeper, Tim, and his calm and faithful sidekick house dog, Marlie, were always available and very helpful with suggestions (well, Tim had suggestions...Marlie just came for friendly pats to each and every guest). Tim even put a card table for us in the screen porch when he saw us playing cards the first night. Coffee and tea were plentiful every morning and available during the day on the second floor with cups and glasses there for guests' use. The individual rooms did not have a refrigerator but there was a community refrigerator on the second floor where guests could stock their own food and drinks. Guests should be aware that most of the rooms are on the second and third floors and there is no elevator available. There are two rooms that have twin beds and those rooms are on the third floor. (Those are the rooms we had as we were 4 sisters sharing.) For car parking, Tim generally allows one parking space per room. When we showed up with 3 vehicles, because we came to Stratford from 3 directions, he moved around his personal vehicles to make room for us to park in the lot for the 6 days we were there! There are plenty of great restaurants around the Inn within walking distance for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Another thing Tim will tell you is that during peak Festival season, you almost always should make reservations for dinner and lots of the restaurants are not open on Mondays. We cannot recommend this property enough.

- hilbornquaker (2/5): Fawlty Towers Experience - This was, without question, the worst inn experience we’ve ever had. My spouse compared it to Fawlty Towers—except here there was nothing funny about it. We arrived a little early, with email permission to park, and tried to let someone know we were there. The only “welcome” was a sign with Tim and Andrea’s phone numbers. After 5 p.m., we both started calling and texting. Tim, the owner, never once responded. Andrea answered but never followed through on her promise to call back. All we were trying to do was let them know we couldn’t make the arbitrary 6 p.m. registration cut-off. When we arrived 45 minutes after 6, the front door had notes for two other late guests—but not for us. How could there be when they wouldn't respond during registration time? We rang the service bell multiple times, called again, and eventually Tim wandered in. Instead of greeting us, he curtly reminded us that check-in was 4–6 p.m., as if we were misbehaving children. He then escorted us to our 3rd floor room in icy silence. The room itself was just as bad. He told us we wouldn’t need the air conditioning because it would be “cool outside" as if he was trying to save every penny. One of the single beds was tilted so badly my husband spent the night sliding toward the edge, convinced the bed was trying to push him out. We left at first light. We could not get out fast enough. For anyone considering this place: don’t. There is nothing welcoming here, only hostility and neglect. This inn doesn’t just lack hospitality—it seems to resent the very idea of guests. Why be an innkeeper if your guests are such an inconvenience?
- Connie (6/5): Worst place ever to stay. - The location is what we were looking for. A place that we could park and walk to the theater, have dinner and walk back. This inn will remain etched in my memory—not as a place of rest, but as a warning. From the moment we arrived, a chill settled over us that had nothing to do with the weather. My spouse described it as Fawlty Towers, but darker, stripped of the comedy and left only with the discomfort. We had email permission to park before check-in, so we stepped inside to announce our arrival. The lobby was empty, save for a sign bearing Tim and Andrea’s phone numbers—our only lifeline to the hosts. After 5 p.m., we began calling and texting, but the silence grew heavier. Tim, the elusive owner, never answered. Andrea briefly appeared by phone, promising a call back that never came. We weren’t demanding; we only wanted to let them know that as seniors and walking from our restaurant reservation that we’d arrive past the strict 6 o’clock cutoff. When we reached the inn 45 minutes late, the door held notes of guidance for other latecomers, but none for us. Forgotten, or deliberately ignored? We rang the bell again and again, our unease mounting, until finally Tim emerged. He did not greet us. He reminded us—coldly—that registration was between 4 and 6, as though we were transgressors. He led us upstairs to our 3rd floor room in silence, his presence as heavy as the locked windows as he assured us we “wouldn’t need the air conditioner” because the night would be cool. The room itself felt unsettled. One of the single beds was crooked, tilted just enough that my husband claimed that it seemed to want to kick him out all night, as though rejecting his presence. Sleep was restless, uneasy, and filled with the sense of being unwelcome. At dawn we packed swiftly and left, escaping as though from a spell. To any future guest: this is not hospitality, but trial by ordeal. Enter these doors knowing you may leave with more stories than rest—and with the feeling you have trespassed somewhere you were never meant to stay.

Where else can you stay that offers a billiards table in a warmly restored parlor! Location is superb for walking to all the Stratford Festival Theatres!

Our rooms at the Stone Maiden Inn were cozy, comfortable & clean. We enjoyed a glass of wine on the grounds and in the sitting room.

On check-in, everything was shown to us - keys, coffee station, ice, a/c machine, etc. We had a little issue in our room when we returned after 11:00 pm but Tim dealt with it efficiently. Charming house in a good location!
