Guest Reviews
- Lisa (6/5): Basic accommodation but great value for money, good location for visiting St Andrews - We have stayed before, it’s a good base for visiting family in the area. Beds were not very comfortable
- Cronin (10/5): Thank you DRA for a wonderful stay in St Andrews, the children can't wait to come back! - Staff were all extremely helpful and efficient, and special thanks to Niall who helped us with our apartment :) . The apartment was very well equipped and clean and a super location. One or two of the mattresses were a little tired. We have reported it to staff who are looking into it
- Sheraz (8/5): -
- Adel (4/5): -
- Subin (10/5): -
- Quadri (10/5): - Best memories I've ever had as a tourist with my family.
This apartment provides everything required for a comfortable stay, and their staffs will go above and beyond to ensure your stay is comfortable.
Lots of attractions at trekkable distance, the city center have some remarkable memories and the beach is a must visit too.
All the children were happy on this trip and they can't wait to share this memories with their friends in school.
Definitely coming back here some other time.
- Emma (8/5): Very good -
- Stephen (7/5): As above, value for money, great location - Great location, value for money Dated surroundings, slight damage to blinds.Toilet door did not lock.
- Marc (8/5): Very good -
- Nathalie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anne (8/5): Have stayed before. A good option for extended families. - Location, staff, Kitchen could have been cleaner.
- Harthy (8/5): Very good -
- Miata (10/5): Perfect place for families visiting St. Andrews! - This is the perfect place for larger groups to stay when visiting St. Andrews. Everyone has their own room and bathroom. The kitchen is well equipped with a large refrigerator and even a dishwasher, and comfortable couches for spending time together. The staff was very pleasant and quick to respond to all requests. The apartments were ideal for us. This isn't a criticism... but it will be easiest if you have a car, as town is probably a 25-30 minute walk. Just a note that each bedroom needs a separate key - so even though all the keys will open the main apartment - it is easy to lock yourself out of your particular bedroom if you're not careful. We had to call to be let in twice during our visit. Totally our fault and they were so quick and kind in coming to let us in.
- Hugh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Benvslife (7/5): Great stay in St Andrews - just a short walk from town! - I used to be a resident in David Russell Apartment and made a request to stay in the newer flats, this request was met
There is a breakfast option available as there is a bistro onsite which can be paid in addition to the booking or alternatively, booked as a B+B option on the website
The room is spacious - we booked out a 5 room flat for the 6 of us which meant that we had an ensuite for each of us
It is situated about <5 minutes drive from St Andrews town centre and approximately 20-30 minutes walk to most places of interest; but about 45 minutes walk to East Sands
The apartment came with basic amenities, including - some dishwashing tablets, a pot, a pan, some cooking utensils, some soap and shampoo for each bathroom, bedding and linens and a hair dryer
There is also an onsite laundromat (separate washer and dryer) which can be used with a small fee (approximately £3.50 - 1.5 hours for washing + drying)
There was ample parking spaces around the area and close to the apartments Apartment allocation is completely random - a request can be made for ground floor flats but I would highly recommend making a request for either ground floor or second floor flats as the apartments are 4 floors with no accessible lifts - we were given an apartment on the 4th floor!
The apartment utilises a swipe card access for each apartment AND rooms - we were provided a total of 10 key cards (2 for each room). There was an option to unlock rooms with the key card but the manoeuvre only lasted for 24 hours, which needed to be repeated every single day of our stay.
There wasn't enough amenities for the self-catering option, for example, we found out that we had pans, pots and tumblers but no mugs, bowls or plates! However, this was rectified after informing the onsite team regarding the issue.
Our primary concern with the property relates to how the issue above was handled. Due to a shortage of utensils in the apartment, we chose to dine out and informed the onsite team—who were understandably busy at the time—that we would appreciate it if the items could be left outside our door for us to collect upon our return. However, when we came back, we found the items had been placed inside the apartment, and we also discovered that someone had entered each room to fix a shower curtain (none of the bathrooms had a shower curtain). While we were grateful that the requested items were brought up, we were uncomfortable that someone had accessed the apartment without our knowledge or prior notification.
- Beverley (9/5): Excellent value for money. - Clean and bright.
Excellent help from all staff and fast and speedy response from Porters and maintenance people. Could have had another sofa as 9 of us there
Showers slightly deeper slope to drain and a few centimetres bigger to stop shower curtain sticking to your back.
Large water glasses and another jug
These slight alterations would have made all the difference.
- Julia (9/5): Lovely stay and helpful staff. Perfectly fit out family’s needs. - Proximity to the City Centre, privacy for each in our group. Doors were quite heavy, which was necessary, I’m sure.
- Irina (10/5): Loved every minute ❤️ -
- Douglas (8/5): grt value short stay - helpfull checkin staff nothing
- David (9/5): Family base for holiday in St Andrews - Location, well equipped kitchen, en-suite bathrooms in every bedroom, free on site car parking Bedroom door locks needed card access to be deactivated each day -should be able to deactivate for the whole stay
- Anne (8/5): Very good -
- Stephen (8/5): Very good - The bar was closed due to staffing difficulties
- Clare (10/5): Amazing value and comfort, would highly recommend. - Amazing value for a family travelling, having our own rooms and a central kitchen was incredible. The facilities were equipped with everything we needed and more.
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Martin (8/5): Great budget accommodation for short family break - Great budget accommodation and great location The seating area wasn't very comfortable
- Helen (7/5): Great location, great value - Great value, pretty basic accommodation. Door were really heavy fire doors which was a worry as staying with small kids. Had to prop them open to avoid caught fingers. It would have been great to disable the bedroom locks for the duration of the stay as not ideal when you book the full flat to needs cards or reset each day.
- Linzi (7/5): Good - Fantastic value for money in a great town
Great space for a family gathering Beds were on the small side - each room very comfortable for one adult but beds maybe a bit small for 2 adults. Everything else was fabulous - a lovely campus
- Baha (8/5): Very good -
- Lisa (7/5): Good location, basic accommodation but what we expected for the price. - Great location, 20 min walk to town. Small living area, all in need of updating, carpets all quite badly stained.
- Scott (8/5): Very good - Good location. A 15 minute walk into town. Great to have 5 bedrooms and bathrooms. Kitchen/ living room space is good. The locks on each of the bedroom doors are a bit of a faff…..and they are heavy doors. Appreciate they are for students.
- Anne (9/5): Good value good location would book again - The price was excellent for the accommodation. The rooms were fine & all en-suite. Staff responded quickly to requests. The doors were all locked & unlocked electronically with key cards. With young children & disabled adults (dementia) it was difficult to ensure the doors didn’t lock with the cards inside. The doors were extremely heavy. The door in the disabled room opened automatically when you passed the bed which meant if you got up in the night the room door opened. The doors also made quite a noise when shutting.
- Balfour (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (6/5): Pleasant -
- Steven (5/5): Passable - n/a Bed was uncomfortable, lot of outside noise, oven was unclean and no pots
- Mohammed (9/5): stay was very good, just the place for friends and families -
- Grainne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Arshad (7/5): Good - En suite bathroom Toilets and shower
- hoodles37 (8/5): Would recommend! - 5 of us stayed in a self catering flat. Accommodation was clean and comfortable, reasonably well equipped.Plenty of parking. Staff helpful. 30 minute walk to town, and regular bus service. Good accommodation for the price, relative to what other accommodation in the area costs. Would recommend.
- Tom (8/5): Very good - cheap and functional. great option for groups of families
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Angela (8/5): A good venue for a family trip - 5 double bedrooms - all en-suite
- Yi-ying (10/5): Exceptional - Happy to stay in uni accommodation.
- Eleanor (10/5): Great base for exploring St Andrews and surrounding areas, including Edinburgh - We had 5 double ensuite rooms in our apartment, so perfect for our multi generational family trip. Kitchen facilities were really good and laundry facilities were available and very reasonably priced.
- Ian (10/5): Playing around at St Andrews. - Great rooms for our large party.
Bar food good, but limited variety and availability.
Great location.
Staff very helpful. Kettle leaked hot water while pouring.
Additional pans / mixing bowls would be useful.
Restaurant was only available to large pre booked parties, with bar food only available Thursday to Saturday.
A small onsite shop would be useful for basic groceries.
- Dympna (10/5): Even the middle-aged can get the uni life here 😉 - Loads of space, each bedroom is a small double.
Good kitchen, every tool supplied. Separate bins for recycling. TV in sitting room with 2 couches.
Very polite and friendly staff at reception and the housekeeping teams. Near enough to town for walking but very quiet at night and felt very safe. Pool table in the bar was a cute throwback, but it is a cashless bar ( card payment only). Only a petty thing, but the wet room with shower curtain just didn't work for us; the floor got flooded and drained away too slowly. Be aware that there is no lift - there are 4 floors of stairs to the top apartments ( ask for no 1-3 on the ground floor if you need it).
- John (8/5): Very good - Space in apartment Distance to town
- Katarzyna (7/5): Good -
- Kamil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jean (10/5): Clean, comfortable and very well equipped for multiple occupancy. - It was clean, comfortable and ideal for a family gathering as each room had it’s own en-suite so no queue for the loo!
Also the kitchen provided all the equipment necessary for self catering purposes. Nothing.
- Lynne (6/5): Student accommodation, not clean enough - Location good, if you have transport, spacious apartment , comfy beds , good Wi-Fi Not clean enough, it really needs a deep clean. Kitchen bowls were dirty , visibly so and mugs also had tea or coffee stains around the inside of rim. Wet rooms within bedrooms also need deep cleaned. The Sofas are uncomfortable and not pleasant to look at , the TV is fixed and can’t be angled to watch as the Sofas are either side..We actually left 2 days early.
- Margaret (9/5): Superb -
- Aiden (10/5): Exceptional -
- Iain (9/5): Great value, good location, would return - Location was good. Some of the party ate breakfast in the central refectory and said it was good value Nothing really, comforatble, good location, decent facuilities, clean and friendly.
- Ross (8/5): Very good -
- Susan (10/5): DRA was a short walk away from the steps of my daughter’s graduation ceremony. - I loved the location, cost, and that the apartment had everything we needed and more. For example, each room was en suite. 👍🏻 All was provided and lacked nothing.
- Gillian (8/5): Fine stay for our alumni weekend get together. -
- Jennifer (10/5): Great stay on St Andrews. - Clean, spacious, comfortable. Great value for money. Food in dragons den was excellent and the kids loved playing pool & table tennis.
Highly recommend!! Perfect for families.
- Lorraine (9/5): A really good find. - We enjoyed our stay at David Russell apartments very much. Communication was efficient. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was clean and spacious. We have no complaints and would recommend highly.
- Craig (9/5): ideal stay for those golfing in St Andrews who just want somewhere to sleep! - the porter didnt know too much and didnt have great communication skills
- samomidi (2/5): Paper walls and loud fire doors! not even a good Uni accommodation! - After living in few different countries as student, I can say this place is worst type of accommodation for students and none-students! Walls are made out of paper and you can hear everyone in the flat. Even when they just walking or putting a cup of tea on their desk.
Fire doors are being slammed all over the building giving you a feeling that you are in battlefield and bombs going off around you all the time.
Wait for when you wake up in the morning with someone slamming the door!
Faulty fire alarm systems drags you out of your bed every few weeks in early morning.
- John E. (10/5): St andrew - Very good
- Jonathan (8/5): Great value for money - Excellent value for money, easy access into St Andrews and great service. The only negative is that the walls are paper-thin and the fire doors slam so we got woken up by other guests several times late at night /early morning. Breakfast was good.
- Polly (10/5): - Flat layout with communal lounge and kitchen shared between 5 rooms makes this a great choice for individuals or groups. Bedroom was on a par with Premier Inn. Very clean and warm room with nice linen. Tea and coffee tray. The en suite shower room and particularly the shower is very small but adequate. The grout and silicon around the shower was due a refresh. Great breakfast choice, hot and cold and lots of vegetarian options. On site bar and bistro.
- 445katrinaj (8/5): Surprisingly Good - Stayed overnight while attending a wedding. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms were basic but clean and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was buffet style with a good selection of cooked food/cereal/fresh fruit etc which was as good as you’d get in any hotel. Overall I was pleasantly surprised at how good the whole experience was and would definitely stay here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved the full kitchen in the suite, lots of space, easy access to St. Andrews proper, great, affordable breakfast in the dining hall. Ideal for families.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice little place - Nice place for the price. Good breakfast and close to downtown.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The reception was very welcoming. Accommodation clean and comfortable.Breakfast excellent
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Perfect for a group - individual rooms plus gathering space and kitchen. 25 minute walk to campus. Ask for a top floor unit for the views!
- WHUG (8/5): Golfing Break With Friends - Stayed 3 nights in 5 bedroom flat with lounge/kitchen area. All bedrooms are doubles with en-suite. This was an ideal arrangement for the 4 of us on a golfing break.
This student accommodation is basic but the rooms have been refurbished recently and were ideal for our needs. Booked well in advance and the rate was very good.
Bathrooms are small ‘wet rooms’ and although the shower was good with plenty of hot water, there was not a lot of room because of the shower curtain (minor issue though).
We used taxis to get into St Andrews in about 5 mins at a cost of ~£5.
For the money we found this to be a good choice and the location was reasonably close to town (20 min walk). We were lucky that the weather was terrific for all 4 days of our trip. Golfed very day at either St Andrews or Crail and we all had a great time.
Good choice if you are happy with a relatively basic accommodation with no luxury thrills.
- 19FMG (10/5): Fi - Another perfect stay in St Andrews, accommodation spot on. Great location and bus stop within campus if the walk into town and back too much 😀. As always staff as friendly as ever will be back, highly recommend for the money
- Scrawlerk (8/5): Great value place for groups - Good value accommodation for groups. 5 Double rooms with small ensuite shower, small kitchen with fridges. Sofas etc could do with a little tlc but place was clean and in walking distance of the town centre. The ref is 2mins walk with reasonable priced burgers mac and cheese etc.
- Lena (10/5): Four day break at David Russell - The accommodation was spotless, the staff were extremely friendly and the breakfasts were amazing. Ten out of ten.
- d0vys (2/5): Ds - Kitchen was all sticky. Flats not well maintained generally. Wi-Fi is rubbish. Many of the staff have a disgusting attitude towards guests. Reception is as unhelpful and contradictory as could be. Very unaccomadating to guests needs, in getting luggage from flats to parking area.
- Lana (10/5): Lovely trip - Great place to stay. Staff very friendly. A little bit out of town if weather not good but cheap for a taxi in/out
- annemills5k (8/5): Family Holiday - Rented these apartments on an ITISON deal and we were not disappointed. We had 5 bedrooms all with en suites and good lounge/kitchen.
Welcome bottle of fizz into the bargain which was a lovely touch.
We were lucky with fabulous weather but even it had been awful there is lots to do in and around the surrounding area.
I read before we went it was a long way out of town but i didn't that it was. I suppose it depends what you consider a long walk. We did get a taxi back some evenings but most we paid for one was £6.
- portsoy (6/5): Good choice for a group visit to St Andrews - The apartment was booked for a small family get-together, three singles and two couples occupying a five-room apartment. Overall this was a positive experience and is good value accommodation for expensive St Andrews. It was what you can expect from student halls, the apartment was clean with a small kitchen area with all that you would need for food preparation and a small seating area but only enough soft seats for four persons. The refectory was a five-minute walk from the apartment block and offered an excellent breakfast choice at a very reasonable cost, £4 for continental or £8 for a full cooked breakfast. Car parking is available close to the apartments.
However, there are a few points to be aware of. While the information states that an apartment can accommodate up to 10 persons the apartment would be badly overcrowded. Each room, while adequate for a single person with a small (cramped) shower room/toilet is a tight fir for a couple. Likewise the bed is not a full double, more three-quarter size and therefore not too comfortable. The David Russell Apartments are located over a mile from the centre of town and a good twenty minute walk for a fit person. However, it is easy to get a taxi for up to eight persons ordered from reception and costs less than £5 into town.
During vacation time the cleaning and much other hospitality wok is done by students but this adds interest as we found them all very helpful and friendly. Overall, therefore, an enjoyable stay as a group.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Comfortable stay. - Comfortable stay with everything you need available. (Need to get a hairdryer from reception and leave a deposit). Cold breakfast buffet excellent, but difficult to keep cooked food buffet hot and appetising from the servery. Great value for money and would definitely stay here again.
- jonjon74 (8/5): Solo Stay on Business Trip - I stayed at the DR apartments while attending a conference at the University of St Andrews. Room was clean, lots of towels, coffee/tea available, great internet connection. The grounds are lovely and the staff was very friendly.
- katieidominy (4/5): Rude member of night reception staff - Rooms clean and well equipped, all spoiled by incredibly rude night staff on duty. Speaking to us (a group of hard working, graduating students) coming home from a night in St Andrews in a way that was not befitting of valued customers. Would we have been spoken to in the same tone if we were an older group of golf tourists? Highly doubtful. An otherwise pleasant experience ruined by the unfair branding of our group as nothing more than ‘nuisance students’, when we are, in fact, a respectable group of people celebrating our 4 years at the university of St Andrews and, like any other group, paying customers (rather than a group of insolent, intoxicated undergraduates). A good example of customer service and care? Certainly not.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean, efficient, low cost college housing. Even those long past their college years can enjoy being around young people and appreciate an exceptional value. Although the room is small, it was comfortable enough. The shower is really tiny, though. Just a corner that is partitioned by a curtain, so the bathroom floor gets wet.
- X5777DHscotts (2/5): Poor Business Ethics - This hotel took a non-cancellable/non-refundable payment for 7 nights only to cancel it 6 months later. I found them selling the exact same rooms on another online service for over 2X the price I paid. They would not reinstate my reservation at the same price and continue to sell the same rooms online. This company is totally unethical and I would not do business with them.
- missm480 (10/5): Family stay - My friend booked the apartment and we stayed with our two families in 5 bed apartment. Though I was apprehensive on staying, I couldn't fault anything about the university apartments, clean and tidy on arrival. Each room has its own bathroom, tv and double bed. The kitchen/diner has is a big room and has a dishwasher, so no arguments about who is washing up.
The apartments are 20 minute walk from town/beach. You can get a bus or taxi for no more than £5.
Staff are helpful and quickly respond to any calls regarding faults.
I fell in love with St Andrews during this visit.
- anfaev (10/5): Great value, good location. - We stayed here for the weekend and as a family of five found the accomodation to be great value for money. The rooms are clean and spacious and the staff are friendly and helpful. The apartments are in a good location and we were able to walk into St. Andrews.
We arrived late on the Friday but there was no problem finding the night porter who showed us to our rooms. Overall a great place to stay.
- SP (4/5): No heating facilities - The room was very cold, the mattress was too old (the spring were pointing out) and the bed sheets were not very clean.
- JuneMcL (6/5): Basic but has all you need - Husband and I stayed here as we were attending a wedding at the nearby Rufflets Hotel and were looking for somewhere easy to get back to. Room was basic but had everything we needed. Bed mattresses could be doing with being replaced. Don't expect thrills - this is the Ryanair of hotels but it is reflected in the price. Breakfast was included in the price and was good. We walked from the Rufflets at the end of the wedding which was half a mile away so saved a taxi. Yes, I'd stay again
- stiracl (10/5): Good clean and great value - Stayed overnight and have to say the welcome was great the room was good and the breakfast good with a wide range of options. Overall very good accommodation in a good location. The complex is laid out well with good walkway. I found the staff to be very helpful and informative. Would recommend this accommodation to others
- ElizabethYeovil (8/5): Good Value - We stayed as a group for several nights. Accommodation was good for student rooms. Clean apartments. Kitchen equipment fine but not sufficient for catering for larger group. Good base for visiting St Andrews. No tv in kitchen (they were some in bedrooms) which we would have liked and the iron did not work. Nevertheless, we had a comfortable stay and would recommend as good value.
- Shaz55 (8/5): Excellent option for a large family group - Stayed here for two nights as part of a large family group (7 adults/young adults) and it was good value for money. Having had experience of student halls we knew what to expect and this accommodation didn't disappoint. The flat was clean and had everything you would need for a self-catering break. Really good option for accommodation in St Andrews that won't break the bank!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value for area - Very nice for a dorm. It is walkable, but a long walk.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Get what you pay for - You get what you pay for, nothing stunning but good enough, had a problem with a malfunctioning room card but was resolved by staff, breakfast was good had the usual variety. The main problem was the little blocks of what I thought were fudge that I saved for my 6 hour train journey back were in fact soap... massive disappointment. Apart from that all good
- Jay (10/5): Stay at DRA in St Andrews - Ample size rooms, tasty breakfast included. An overall excellent experience.
- Jay (10/5): Stay at David Russell Apartments in St Andrews - Ample space in our room, good complimentary breakfast.
- K (10/5): Student accommodation - Did what it said on the packet. Uni accommodation. Was clean and comfortable. Shared a kitchen with other rooms but not much on the kitchen, just tea and coffee making facilities. A fridge was there to put your cold products in.
The breakfast was plentiful with lots of choice. Not good coffee! A large nespresso machine would be a huge improvement.
V good price for accommodation that is close to the centre of st Andrews.
- TDYorks (8/5): Good value, with added benefits - Quite a nice looking reception, for what is essentially good quality student accommodation. Not luxurious by any means, but good value for money, particularly in St Andrews. Lots of parking when we were there, but I guess it could get tight at busy times. You can leave the car there and take a pleasant walk into the town. Breakfast is buffet style in a cafeteria, but good choice and decent quality produce.
The only downside for us, as we like to watch late night films, was a tiny CRT TV the likes of which we haven't seen since about 1995. Come on, a decent size LED is £200 now!.
It's also good that they employ a lot of students, on reception and as cleaners, as it gives it a nice feel.
- Lilia939 (8/5): Very Pleasant Overall - I had a pleasant stay in DRA overall. I was in the Haldane Block, next to the main facilities centre, in a pleasant, spacious and well-kept room. The apartment (5 rooms in total) had very nice, modern kitchen facilities. Tea, coffee and shortbread biscuits (!) were available from the kitchen. Towels and shower gel/ soap were provided, and the bedding was clean and fresh. A few slight problems were encountered- the curtain rail in the room unfortunately broke as soon as I tried to pull the curtains closed. The students working there over the summer were very friendly; however, unfortunately, the older staff were a little less so, and were not particularly welcoming. But I may just have been unfortunate and have caught them on a bad day. All rooms have double beds and there seemed to be a lot of confusion about the fact that I had only booked for the one person. It is fine for solo travellers though. DRA is about a 25 minute walk out of town, but there is a bus stop nearby. I would stay here again if the other student accommodation (e.g. University Hall) were all booked up, but it would not be my first choice.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Visiting university - Visiting daughter at university. Hotel was convenient. Breakfast was excellent.
- Les (8/5): Needed to stay overnight in St Andrews - Most hotels were very expensive, saw this one and gave it a go.
Excellent value for money nice lounge, good food, comfy clean room , comfy bed a new excellent breakfast. Staff were lovely very helpful.
- tania & sandi (6/5): An affordable hotel with a generous breakfast. - The accommodation was not quite what we expected. The advertising suggested we would get an apartment but we got just a room with access to a shared kitchen. So we felt a bit misled. I think they need to look at their marketing.
