• Jocelyn (10/5): wonderful stay! - my stay was absolutely wonderful! the room was clean and cute, the bathroom, while cozy, was more spacious than i anticipated, and the owners were incredibly nice when i came in. i only stayed for one night as i was traveling for work, however if i were to be in the alpena area again i absolutely would plan another stay here. this place has so much personality, it really is such a refreshing visit. my only complaint is that there is no safety lock on the door, only the knob lock. not to say i felt incredibly unsafe, however it would have eased my mind.

The owners are very welcoming. This is our 2nd stay. Wish there was a packet of decaffeinated coffee along with the regular.

• Charlene (10/5): Overall couldn’t ask for better lodging and accommodation. - The motel is about 70 years old, so it is like stepping into the past. Everything is kept very tidy and clean. We were booked for four night but an event I was in had to be extended. The property owner was able to make a last minute adjustment which I so appreciate! Price was very reasonable for the area and is right across from the beach.

Mexican restaurant across street was good not great. Lodge could use some updates or just a handy man to repair a few things. Chairs were a little wobbly, gutters need cleaned out, etc. water pressure wasn’t the greatest. Overall, we’d stay there again.

The room was a little on the small side but very clean. My kids were a little bummed the playground was disassembled but they had the beach and park right across the road to make up for it!

Parked right by our door, had an actual key for the room. Air conditioner worked well, lots of towels. Walked to the restaurant next door. Excellent dinner with view of Lake Huron.

• Triumph57 (3/5): Overpriced, relic from the past - From the outside the Big Bear Lodge looks great! Once in the room, it was a different story. I would have moved on, if I hadn't already paid for the room. That location is good & plenty of restaurants around for dinner, though. VERY small, "dated" room. "Tacky" decor and very poor (bottom of the line) TV programming. Seems like the rooms haven't been upgraded since the 1950's! The room was barely big enough to walk around the beds. Broken toilet, extremely short (made for little people) sink & toilet. The AC unit worked well... but the thermostat was broken & it would not shut off, when the proper temperature was reached. We spent the night like Goldilocks, either hot or cold. WAY overpriced for the room we got! Definitely, NOT worth it.

• Brian (6/5): - The couple in the office was so friendly that I feel bad leaving a sub par review… The room is soooo tight. My husband and I had a hard time navigating around each other. Can’t imagine 4 people sharing this room, Furnishings are “meh.” The closet is sort of scary. I wouldn’t sleep next to it. Shower is spacious but there was hair on the wall - not mine. Underside of the toilet seat was not clean. Bathroom floor not clean. Bathroom door has some damage at the bottom that needs to be attended to as well. The exterior door threshold needs to be repaired. AC unit had to run constantly to keep the room cool and the fan would not run on a low speed so it was noisy. At least I couldn’t get it to go at a lower speed. I’m very surprised that this little hotel’s score was a 90 - “wonderful.” I’m thinking 75. Bugs need to be cleaned away from the exterior light fixtures to make the room more welcoming from the outside. Water pressure was good in the shower but there is nowhere to set anything down by the sink. Again, I can’t imagine 4 people sharing this room and bathroom. On a positive note, grounds were quiet. Looking forward to seeing a few lighthouses.
