- Q6663GJmichaeld (2/5): Stay away - The nightmare starts when you pull onto the 50 yard road to this large nice looking building. The road has more jarring potholes than a Mideast war torn city. Sometimes someone is at the front desk to greet you. Other times you are on your own. Zero people running the place. Remember “the Shining “ movie? Spooky and startling. Last morning nobody showed up to prepare breakfast . We met 3 women who arrived the night before. Nobody at the front desk. One of their beds had no linen. We had Big Foot and his wife in the room above us. We heard every move they made. Apparently this place is owned by former F1 race driver. Someone needs to tell him his hotel has serious engine problems and needs help.

The cleanliness is substandard throughout the hotel, overflowing trash cans, dirty floors, windows filthy. There was not any internet. Hotel receptionist acknowledged that internet was spotty, but as it turned out an upgrade is in progress, so not spotty....not available. Rooms are strangely furnished, hodgepodge of tables, chairs, etc. Our first room had no counter in the bathroom. Incredibly squeaky floor and bed! Very few hangers, furnishings broken, shower head broken, no ice machine, no mini fridge, coffee machine not working. Workout room had one elliptical, one treadmill, and a few small dumbbells. Moved to another room, no place to hang our clothes! We had the impression that the hotel is failing or severely neglected. Plants outside were dying, no landscaping. We decided to leave early, even though our third night was free. The one bright spot was a very nice lunch at the Tavern. I would not recommend this hotel until a serious upgrade has been confirmed.

- F2443CStaram (4/5): Just Don’t!! - The WiFi didn’t work and little phone service. Could not plan outings or even check the weather. The night staff was hard to find if you needed anything. We waited almost 30 minutes just to get checked in. Morning help didn’t arrive until 9:00 am. You had to go to a back door down steep steps to get in after 10:00 because no one was there on staff. Driveway was very rough. Breakfast was not great. Just an overall poor experience. Do not recommend. Very disappointing!!
- M3607AOmarkw (6/5): New managers, MUCH poorer food, wine, service & property cleanliness - We’ve been coming to Williamsburg Winery and the Wedmore for years. It has been one of our favorite weekend trips in Virginia for food, wine, ambiance, great facilities and superb staff. Unfortunately, the Wedmore seems to be losing its touch. We were there for three days in mid May and found way too many (new) negatives. We found a used/opened, half-full wine bottle in our room at check in. The wooden floor in the room was sticky for some reason. Like as if someone had spilled champagne and didn’t clean it up. The breakfast service had changed from exquisite French continental to a more American same menu every day of frozen/processed items. One of the reviewers said it was like at a Holiday Inn. We’ve had breakfast at Holiday Inns—the food is fresher, more varied and overall better than what is currently being served at the Wedmore. The wine tastings no longer feature the vineyard’s reserve offerings and now even include imported rather than local wines. With a few notable exceptions, the staff no longer provide the five-star level of service that they provided in the past. All in all, the magic that Patrick and Francoise Duffeler created with the winery, hotel and restaurants is now missing without their presence and the organizational culture that they engendered. The overall ambiance now lacks the sense that one is at a vineyard somewhere in France rather than in Virginia. The zeitgeist at the property is now kind of sad. We’ve been big supporters of the winery and even held a family reunion there once. But in its current incarnation, we don’t intend to return. Wishing the new owners the best, but as of now it looks like they’re making a lot of unforced errors as they seem to be seeking to cut costs more than anything else.
- Karan (6/5): Don't stay here until they figure out how to get Wifi... - Great location, spacious room furnished with beautiful antiques, being onsite at the winery provides the opportunity for a wine tasting, which they do quite well. Three key issues for why you should NOT stay here: 1) No WiFi at this property. We were told at check-in that the WiFi is "sketchy," but in fact it was non-existent. Property is also a bit remote, so there is very little cell phone signal. Without WiFi, we were unable to even download email or to use the Internet to get any information. They have a list of 4 or 5 different networks that guests can log on to, but each time you log on to a network, the signal promptly drops and then you have to try another network. We just gave up after 30 minutes of typing in different passwords and always having the network immediately drop. 2) Water temperature in the shower is lukewarm at best. Also, for some reason, they have switched to hand-held showers and capped the wall-mounted shower head outlet...this results in having a hand-held shower mounted on the wall of the rather small shower stall so that the shower head is in your face (or for taller people, at chest level). Why did they get rid of the traditional shower mounted on the wall above the shower stall. 3) The breakfast is like being in a middle-school cafeteria. Very limited options and it can take forever to get coffee served at your table.

Coffee by Keurig on the base level as the only option before 8am. Lotion and Conditioner containers empty. Shower was lukewarm. Not great after our 30 mile bike ride. We really had high hopes for our weekend here, sadly very disappointed.

- lindendaisy (2/5): Not a good place to stay - We just got back from the Wedmore Place. We were there for a wedding in Williamsburg. While we were there, we had NO internet access or television access. The place is old which is fine, but we were on the first floor. When the people in the room above us walked we could hear every creak of the floor. The noise from a party down the hall came blaring through the vent. There are a million places to stay in Williamsburg. We do not recommend this hotel.

- Ralph (10/5): A wonderfully unique European style experience in a vineyard with winery - This is the only place we stay on the numerous occasions we travel to Williamsburg. Unlike the many generic hotels in the area, this winery hotel achieves a European like experience with unique rooms, antiques, wooden floors, real rugs, comfortable beds, and a wonderful breakfast. Just know that this is a smaller hotel that is not staffed later in the evening.

- Krista (9/5): Quiet retreat with wonderful breakfast. - The location was lovely. We arrived after dark, so we didn't get to enjoy the view until morning. It was so quiet. The courtyard and pool area were beautiful. We enjoyed the breakfast which was included. Lots of options including the usual bagels and fruit they had hot quiche and sausages. They also stock the local winery's wine and we purchased a bottle. They even had the wine we wanted chilled and ready to serve. We left before the winery opened the next day at noon. Too bad as they included free wine tasting with the room. We did walk around the winery tasting area and cafe looked lovely. Wish we had time to enjoy them. About 11:30 the fire bell went off, fortunately, we were not asleep yet. Not sure what set it off as we didn't smell any smoke. While the guests waited outside the night supervisor came and reset the alarm. I heard the following morning that the fire department came to checked everything out to be sure, but we had already gone back to our room before they arrived. They did tell us not to use the fireplace so perhaps another guest didn't follow the rules.

- Brittani (8/5): A beautiful, romantic getaway for a historic and cultural weekend with your loved ones. - I liked that the property is located on a vineyard, it was set aback from the main roads and traffic, with plenty of scenic/nature areas. I liked that it had a beautiful pool, and spa available. The decor was nice and the staff were accommodating. The breakfast was pretty decent. The breakfast staff weren't the nicest and openly complained about how busy and overworked they were (every day that we were there). They also didn't do well with providing tea/coffee, etc. We either had to ask after waiting a while or they would come around mid breakfast and offer it when they noticed they hadn't gotten to it. The breakfast was pretty decent but a lot of things were gone and not restocked. We were pretty early for breakfast each day, so we were surprised. This all isn't a big deal, of course, but it wasn't a pleasant experience overall. We felt rushed, a lot of things weren't restocked or offered, and we had to deal with staff having an attitude about it/openly complaining on top of it all. Just not a great way to start the morning. Other than that, everything else was wonderful.

For example, the ceiling in my room had pieces of plaster falling down and signs of flooding and the TV didn’t work. But nice grounds and the staff are very friendly.

We brought our pups and the grounds were well maintained and perfect to walk the pups around. We were able to stroll over to the winery for a free tasting. Breakfast was decent and the staff was very friendly. It was just what we were looking for for our short weekend getaway!

I was told that you don’t air dirty laundry in the hallway, but I had too. No one was helping me out so I had to go out of my way. Service

We did not know the 2 restaurants were closed on the night we chose to stay and we had to get Olli brand packaged charcuterie (from the tasting room) as we wanted to stay on the property for the night. The wine tasting was very nice with a large selection. The property is aging but the room was nice with a huge, soft, comfortable king bed. Next time I think we will stay closer to Williamsburg for the variety of choices of entertainment.

- Andrea (10/5): - I saw this property reviewed as “quirky” and I would propose a more appropriate description to be that this property is full of character, well loved and thoughtfully appointed, completely unlike most other properties, and comfortable. We would stay here again for sure.
- Melanie (10/5): - This place is so wonderfully unique with all of the antique furniture and layout of the building! Although unused due to the season, there was a fireplace in the bedroom. We enjoyed our lunch in the courtyard beside the fountain. We had a wine tasting experience, and an evening swim in the beautiful outdoor pool. I would definitely come back here again!

- Mavourneen (6/5): - Overall, our stay was pleasant. The staff were extremely hospitable and warm. The hotel lobby looked tired and there were cobwebs in every corner. I would suggest brightening it up and making it look more refined and welcoming. We stayed in the large suite which was beautiful but lacking in many areas. This room could really be special if it was maintained. The walls were flaking and the air conditioning units in the ceiling were full of black mold. Paint carpets and sofas had crumbs and did not seemed to be cleaned properly. I understand the hotel is historically themed which is part of its charm, but maintaining it with repairs to the flaking paint and cleanliness of overall space would make it truly special.

- Kaija (8/5): It was a very pleasant, peaceful stay. - The property is rather unique, charming, on the vineyard, surrounded by old tall trees and lots of greenery. Made a welcome change to the sameness and monotony of chain hotels. The breakfast was adequate but the coffee was bad. Had to pay dearly for a cappuccino as a special order to wake up! The staff was pleasant and helpful. The property could benefit from some work but the squeaking floors and faded tapestries add charm and period feel.

- Nicole (10/5): Beautiful Stay in Catalonia - The rooms are beautifully decorated, the bed was comfortable and it had a very nice shower. The pool areas really nice, and the complimentary breakfast was good. It would have been nice to have a small refrigerator or an ice dispenser in hotel. There is no real option to store leftover food or cold drinks.

Other than that, the property is lovely. The winery and free wine was amazing. I cannot wait to come back in the winter.

The pool was nice but needs some patio maintenance. Breakfast was light with restrictive coffee service. The property was fine. I would probably not stay there again.

- Gregory (8/5): - The setting and overall ambiance of this European style hotel is really nice. Room decor and public spaces are well done, especially the library and the pool. Breakfast was very good with some variety daily and accommodating staff. Our room didn’t have the coffeemaker but there was a Keurig outside the breakfast area for 24/7 use. The winery itself really is the attraction with the complimentary wine flights very generous and lots of fun. The Brittany room (3) needs reworking of the bathroom with its tiny corner sink that no adult could possibly use easily. A vanity or cabinet with a real sink would be a thoughtful improvement. Enjoyed the stay.

Only thing we weren’t fans of was that the sofa bed was terrible. Definitely they need to replace as you could feel the springs through it.

- Regina T (8/5): Quaint, relaxing, historical - While there were may things I found charming, the cell service was non-existent (wi-fi great)and although breakfast was included in my rate, they didn't have it available until 8am and I had to be at my conference at 8. Also it would have been helpful (from Hotels.com) to know that the restaurant was closed by 4pm on Sundays. The food at their restaurant was Excellent with great service on the night I could indulge there.

The grounds were not maintained. The restaurant and bar should stay open past 8pm. This place could be lovey with just a little money and effort.
- Georgios (7/5): Good - Croissant kisch Lorraine and fruit salad in the breakfast. The hotel pretends to be something that it is not. European style 4 star hotel. For sure, it has not European standards for a 4 star hotel. Major problem there is no refrigerators in the room. Since I am using some medicine that need to be kept cool, I carry some ice packs. I asked the receptionist to put them in the freezer in order to become solid ice, and although she said se understood, she just put them in a regular refrigerator so when I collected them they were not frozen but just liquid. The afternoon receptionist was quite indifferent. We had booked 3 months in advance a specific room. Without mentioning anything she allocated to us, a different, inferior according to me. When we produced written proof of our reservation, she carefully moved out of hearing distance in order to call her supervisor. She offered another room , which we accepted, and a bottle of wine ,which they tried to forget, but we reminded them on check out. Overall, below are our expectations.

Nice breakfast and a complimentary wine tasting too. Everyone was kind and helpful. We look forward to coming back!

- ScotTravler (4/5): - One extra star for the good food and service in the Tavern Restaurant separate from the Inn. With that said, the previous review was spot on. Do not let the photos fool you. Even the video slide playing in the restaurant has photoshopped pictures of the pool, grounds and Inn that do not reflect the actual property. The vineyard is picturesque, but hotel is not managed well and the room was very tired and needs painting around the dirty air vents on the ceiling and in desperate need of a refresh and deep cleaning. Most disturbing was the fire alarm that went off at 4:10 AM on Saturday mornings causing the entire building to be evacuated outside until the firefighters showed up. More concerning was there was no manager on duty or security at all. The firefighters asked the guests if there was a manager? To make things worse the front desk confirmed that there was not any management or security on the premises and she wouldn’t be in until Monday. When we alerted the front desk that the firefighter had told us the problem came from room 15, whose fire alarm had off due to the steam in the shower, the front desk told us that it had happened before in that room. So here’s a tip, if you know there is problem in the room how about not being greedy and take it off the room block and put it in out of order before you displace the whole hotel. A note from management? Nope. Acknowledgment of the incident to guests? Nope. Recovery? Nope. Less alarming, but worth pointing out they ran of pastries at breakfast, which I don’t understand if you know how many guests are staying in the hotel. This was actually okay since we had lost our appetite looking at the dead flies on the windowsills in the cafe and the overgrown weeds surrounding the pool area. Wedmore Place, you need to do better and guests deserve better and have choices. The property falls far below expectations for such a beautiful town like Williamsburg and it deserves and requires a dedicated caretaker.
