Guest Reviews
- Raúl (10/5): - The place ls amaizing , the staff super Nice , and very quiet to relax yourself , but be aware that the closer beach is 30 min driving motorbike, and to reach the hotel from pier taxi Will charge You like 800 / 1000 bat . Staff was so Nice that they reserved a local taxi for our way back , and Even cheaper 600.
If You Wanna relax its perfect but You need to know how to ride a bike .
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very nice place in a less touristic area. The room was excellent, everything you need and it was clean. There is a beautiful view to the see from the deck. Only slightly negative thing is there aren’t many restaurants in the area, but the few you find are very nice. Closest ATM is about 3 kilometers away. Otherwise very nice and calm area.
- Lars (8/5): - I like the atmosphere, relaxing and beautiful areas..Tiem was so nice and helpful man..
- long to restaurang
- Ju-Juejan (8/5): Freindly staff, beautiful place and nice area - I were there just a night, I got a motorbike lift from the staff to visit the fair at the nearby temple (Wat Salakpet). The place is so lovely, I enjoy my stay very much. A bike is free and the staff is really helpful in setting it up ready. Biking through coconut orchard and fishing village, buying dry fishes back home...I really enjoy that morning.
- Finrobin (10/5): Pricey but not expensive - This is a really nice place to stay if you have the money, absolutely gorgeous terass where you can enjoy the view of the bay as you eat your breakfast. Really nice lounge area upstairs and overall a very relaxing and quiet vibe. There's also a shop across the street. Breakfast is worth the price.
Salakphet is a quiet place and basically everything closes at 9PM. Use the free kayaks offered and see the Mangroves up close and paddle in between the houses to see the real local lifestyle (I also recommend walking around the village onto the different piers). For a more western vibe head to the Fishermen's Hut restaurant that's run by a Swedish guy, good food and excellent boat trips from there.
Things to see close by: Boat trips(Talk to the Swedish guy at Fishermen's Hut), Long Beach, Mangrove Walkaway, the Temple, Kayaking and the village itself.
- MVDG123 (10/5): Relaxing in a beautiful environment - If you enjoy a little bit of quiet during your travels, this is a good place for you. The staff was very friendly and could accomodate requests for activities (e.g. have kayaks for free and scooters for rent). The food options in the area are not plenty, but dinner and breakfast (banana cakes!) have a variety of good options.
If you book activities with this hotel, I would advise to doublecheck if an English speaking guide is available as we had a little bit of trouble with that. Nonetheless, we really enjoyed our stay.
- Pernille (10/5): Dejligt sted. - Utrolig dejligt sted. Meget afslappende og roligt. Hyggelig lille fiskerlandby.
- ti-moo79 (8/5): Relax - We were here with my spouse. Mangrove Hideway was really good place to take relax. Breakfast was good and the staff was friendly. If you want very much privaty maybe this is not good place for you. Otherwise; highly recommended Mangrove Hideway.
- Dropbear42 (10/5): Private snorkelling tour - We didn't stay here, but booked a private snorkelling tour for our family of 5. We were picked up/dropped off from our hotel (Amber Sands), which was ~ 20 minutes away. We left at ~ 9am and returned aroun 3;30pm and had 5 stops on the surrounding islands, including lunch on an empty beach that felt like scene from Castaway. The crew were great. They always seemed to find the empty beaches, brought bread for the kids to feed the fish and were great help with the kids. Considering the price was not significantly more than 5 tickets on a larger boat, I highly recommend considering this option for any groups of 4 - 8.
- kateseddy (10/5): What a Delight! - My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights to explore the Eastern side of Ko Chang and we fell in love with the Mangrove Hideaway. It is a peaceful haven where you can really appreciate the nature that surrounds it. With views of the mountains and mangroves and surrounding fishing village, it is a very unique place to stay. The attic zone upstairs is awesome and a great place to unwind and read quietly at the end of the day. It has hammocks, cushions, cosy lounging areas (and a cute cat). We stayed in the duplex room which offered a downstairs and an upstairs area and we really loved that bit of extra room. The whole place is super clean and so nicely decorated. The staff are warm and friendly and helped with recommending things to do. We had our own scooter which I think you need in this quieter part of the island and it allowed us to travel to and from the West coast ourselves (around 45 mins to an hour) and to venture to Long Beach (beautiful, go!). We ate at the restaurant twice and the food was lovely and home cooked. They had a mixture of Thai and Western dishes reasonably priced. The home made coconut ice cream is a winner! There aren't a whole lot of eateries nearby so we were very happy to eat here. The staff also went out of their way to return some items that we accidentally left in our room which was really kind of them. If you are looking for a place to stay to see the beauty of the East coast then 100% stay here!
- Remnik (8/5): Great relaxing, but not perfect - Very nice, well maintained place. Lots of nice details. Service was top class and also the food very good.
The location is in a local village, not made for beach vacation. But we knew that and that’s what we were seeking anyway.
On the negative: the room was decorated very nicely, but only two small windows looking at the walkway and the wall of the next building. Also internet was down for at least 2 days, but apparently in the whole village, so not just a hotel problem.
What we considered a pity is that it seemed everybody wanted to be for themselves. So seeking privacy, quietness and perfect service, this is your place.
- keithr944 (10/5): Very relaxing spot to get away from it all - This has to be one of the most ideal locations we have visited. Quiet and relaxing, located on the southern end of the island away from the more commercial touristy areas. Located in fishing village on the coast. Staff extremely helpful will arrange taxis and shuttles to get around island. Also arranged trips to elephants, boat trip for swimming and to local restaurants. Authentic Thia food served here which was excellent. Hotel arranged return private taxi from Bangkok for us which was a 5hr road trip. All rooms have a/c and are very comfortable. We would have no hesitation in booking this hotel again.
- Mark (10/5): Quiet piece of paradise - Excellent quiet hotel ideal for a quiet stay in a lovely fishing village with excellent day trips available to remote beaches and islands
- KhunAPPLE (10/5): Peaceful but fun with friends - This place is stunning both the room and the surrounding. Lots of cute natural stuffs. Breakfast is homemade and organic. You will feel calm and relax to stay here. But they also have kayak, bicycle and activities to do so. On the attic have chilling area for your massage, chilling or reading. Try the jacuzzi on the roof! Worth for money in my opinion.
- soular65 (8/5): Nice and cozy for 3 - 4days - We stayed there for almost two weeks Dec/Jan and found it pretty nice and cozy, since it is really far away from the crowds on the West side, but we were very surprised to learn, that the french management is no longer in place, Luc and Olivier left the country. So don´t expect the rich support they offered. Since there is not much to see and to do (beaches are far away and not so easy to access) you better plan for 3-4 days and move on to Bang Bao f.e. The new management is not very customer experienced and more interested in accounting, but Nat the wonderful service allrounder tries to compensate, he is really lovely! The good news is: Luc and Olivier will return and open a new place in early summer!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice resort to escape the crowds - We stayed at the hotel for almost two weeks in Dec/Jan and found it a very nice and cozy place in general. We chose this resort mainly due to the enthusiastic comments regarding the french management, because we already assumed that a good host would be necessary in this very remote, undeveloped area. We were very surprised when we arrived and learned that Luc and Olivier left the country since last summer. The new management is pretty unexperienced and more interested in accounting, thank god Nat is still there and the rest of the service team trained by the former management. They are all very nice but pretty lost when it comes to substantial questions or assistance. So our resume is: 3-4 days are enough, then you better move on to Bang Bao f.e. There you have a nice beach and more possibilities to explore the area nearby. The good news is: Luc and Olivier will be back from early summer and open a new hotel, watch out for new offerings!
- takkischitt (10/5): Totally perfect place to getaway from it all! I really, really loved this place. - Beautiful location and it's in a lovely, quiet village. The rooms are brilliant and staff are extremely helpful and caring. The breakfast is also very good! They have a relaxation area upstairs, which is stunning! We also made use of the complimentary kayaks and had a paddle up the river from the hotel and got to see some great wildlife (sea eagle, kingfisher and lots of small creatures in the mangroves!). Nearby there are some great places, too. The Swedish restaurant is great, and the Finnish guys little bar with the cosy wooden roof terrace is really cool!
- elenmariet (10/5): Dreaming of the Mangrove Hideaway.. - We stayed for four nights in October 2015, and I'm still dreaming of the wonderful time we spent here. Located on the islands east coast, the Mangrove Hideaway is a gem, offering a luxuriant experience while committed to preserving the local habitat and cooperating with the local communities. The food is delicious, the staff wonderful and attentive, and the rooms spacious, clean and super comfortable. There are a a number of exciting sites to visit and a variety of activities to get stuck into in the nearby area - we snorkelled, went trekking, and checked out the local mangroves. You can also book massages, and there is a bubble bath in the chill our area on the second floor. Perfect to recover after busy days. In short, if you want to experience the real Koh Chang (and avoid the touristy and chaotic west, or to recover and relax after having visited the west) this is the place to stay!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Fantastic place - Hospitable staff, georgious setting amongst mangroves. Would I return? YES!!!
- heidih812 (10/5): Perfection - This place is unique.
(I stayed late nov.15)
All of the staff offer top notch service from start to finish. And beyond...
Even the extra service like our waterfall guide Olivier, the walkway trail pick up service by Luc and the superb cooking classes by Nat were complimentary.
The grounds are so well kept and the rooms are the cleanliest of all my trips to Thailand. This is a place I can not find words for what it is worth. Go there and feel their genuine hospitality.

- 164ulysses (10/5): Fantastic - If you're keen for an option on the 'quiet' side of the island look no further (assuming they are able to keep operating - fingers crossed for you guys). We are not fans of the over-developed Thai island culture - if you're looking for the mess of bars, resorts and backpackers crowding every inch of sand then go to the west coast. If you're looking for 'real' Thailand and the best seafood imaginable then head to Salakphet.
Mangrove Hideaway is wonderfully friendly and the rooms are very comfortable. Lovely bathroom. It's also pretty reasonably priced for the standard of accommodation. The food is fabulous. Not much more than can be said, nothing to fault. We were sorry to only have one night here.
- 754nigelb (10/5): Stunning setting. Fantastic hosts. Best on Koh Chang - Had four nights in this wonderful place. It's peaceful, friendly and very comfortable. The hosts are welcoming, helpful and run an excellent business. Breakfast is different every day with home made juices, jams and preserves. The dinner menu is diverse and the standard of cooking and service is just about as good as you can get. The location is stunning and Oliver and Luc's team of Thai staff are outgoing, personable and friendly. Was very sad to leave and am looking forward to returning in 2017.
- melody365 (2/5): it's a terrible resort in Koh Chang - tourists have to take more than 90 mins bus to arrive the resort from pier. the road is mountain road. there are a lot of taxis(PickUp) at the pier.
the resort's director and owner-Oliver's appalling attitude made me quite upset. when I asked the resort to tell me what is right way to arrive there. Oliver as the resort's director and owner told me that they are busy, having a log of guests, they can not have time to reply me, one reason is that I just stay one night and asked much more details.
She told me that to come or not to come is my business, I can decide it.
based on her attitude, I decided to stay other resorts, modified my permitted credit card's details. after I leave Koh Chang 10 days, this resort charge fee by my credit card without my permit......Until now, Oliver still think she can charge fee without my permit, she gave my credit card details to the other resort, this resort charged fee after I leave Chang 10 days.
I think she totally lose control, replied two words "poor man". reported her behavior to my bank and booking. com. my bank has investigated it how they charge fee by credit card without owner's permit. booking. com has dealt with this complaint. several staff told me he/she feels unpleasant after contacting this resort for my complaint.
Although she said she is busy, she wrote long long email to describe how does she think Russia and Chinese tourists before I arrived to Koh Chang. it's racial discrimination.
Finally, I stay three days at a quiet beach-Bangbao beach at Koh Chang which is nice, clean and peaceful. live in a cabin in front of beach, can go into sea or stay on the beach anytime if I want.
- suebF5090YD (10/5): Highlight of our trip - We stayed 4 nights at the Mangrove Hideaway and didn't want to leave. I have never felt so well looked after as we did here. Olivier and team seem to know what you want before you do! They took us in their boat to a little beach on a deserted island and the boat was packed with water, towels, beach mats for our comfort. We were recommended a trek to another deserted beach and they kindly gave us a lift the first part of the journey to make sure we were on the right track and to shave off a little bit of the journey - packed lunch provided too!
The area is in a very quiet part of Koh Chang and that was what was so delightful. It was all very low key and relaxed. You could rent one of the mopeds and explore, or explore on foot or relax in a hammock and enjoy the view.
Other reviewers have mentioned the breakfasts and they are not to be missed! A lovely way to start the day on the terrace with something different to try everyday. The coconut jam and the tamarind jam were amazing. We ate every evening at the Mangrove Hideaway. It is not usual for us to eat in the same place each day but the food and the ambience were so special that we didn't want to go anywhere else. We expressed interest in what the locals were fishing for one evening - a local speciality Black Crab - and the next evening one had been sourced and was cooked especially for us! Fantastic meal. Have to mention the 3 senses fish too which has to be tried.
- moldovajuli (10/5): a gem at a nontouristic village - Great places are like shadows of great people? Not easy to tell about but all this, the upper rest zone, the super food, flowers, plants, ambiance, little details, rules of respect, care and professionalism adds up to something truly delicious. Oliver and captain Luc do care about every detail and this is not only perfect service, but introduction to this magical world.
- judeo642 (10/5): Paradise found! - My partner spent a fair amount of time researching the location for this holiday and I left it entirely in his hands. I knew we were going to stay in a quiet fishing village in a non-touristy area of a beautiful Thai island, but what I did not know was that we would be staying in Paradise!
I exaggerate not!
As the name suggests, the house is indeed hidden away and has only 12 guest rooms so the maximum number of occupants at full capacity is fewer than thirty.
During our 5 day stay (oh, if only it could have been longer) our fellow guests were from Canada, Australia, Scotland, Ireland, Poland and Austria and were all, like us, looking for something very different from the average holiday.
What sets Mangrove Hideaway apart is the attention to detail, the dedication to ensuring the guests' enjoyment but at as little cost to the environment as possible.
The Hideaway is the brainchild of a charming and caring French gentleman, Olivier and it is primarily due to his vision that he, Cap'n Jean Luc and the staff succeed in meeting and usually surpassing their guests' expectations.
The bedrooms are stunning with beautifully soft, high quality bed linen and good, firm beds. Toiletries are organic. Water is provided daily in the room's refrigerator.
Breakfast is an absolute revelation: virtually everything is homemade from the divine yoghurt, tamarind/pineapple/ orange and ginger jams to the freshly made fruit juices which change daily, our favourite being the watermelon/ginger!
Never before have we stayed in every night, to dine at the place we stayed at on holiday but with food this good, we never felt the urge to venture out. The fish/seafood menu is mind-blowing and there is a huge variety of veggie options too. The "golden duck" one of the veggie dishes - is out of this world - I defy you to find anything comparable anywhere in the world!
Traditional Thai massage is available to book in one of the massage areas on the chill-out attic/roof space which boasts hammocks, a basket chair, a jacuzzi (filled to order freshly at each guest's request).
I could go on forever about how utterly amazing this place is, but I'll close by saying that if you care about the environment of where you are staying, if you truly want to recharge your batteries and chill out on your holiday, you will find nowhere better. If you are looking to get drunk, fry yourself on a beach, listen to loud music and party, party, party - go somewhere else!
- Maksims (10/5): Relax and peace! - Ko chang has west coast - touristic, busy, russian speaking and east coast - calm. Situated on east coast of ko chang (expect to pay for shuttle more if you are coming after 3 pm -all share taxi go to west coast) Situated in a real village. Don't choose this hotel if you want crouds of people, shops, restaurants, vivid nightlife, direct beach and swimming pool access. But hotel gives free pushbikes, kayaks, fishing rods, free shuttle to pristine beach (no stouns and deep water - rear thing on ko chang), calm atmosphere, pleasand restaurant, boutique hotel-style surrounding and rooms, friendly stuff. They even have special massage and relax area at the attique - much nicer and relaxing than having massage in a box-sized salon in other villages on an island.
- Michael (10/5): Erholung u. Klare Empfehlung!
- Päivi (10/5): Combination of luxus and local touch! - We loved this place! It was lovely to stay in a real fishing village but in a very beautiful, peaceful and hospitable accommodation. Our room was very nice, the relaxing attic center upstairs so beautiful and tasty we wanted to use it every day. Oliver was the best host you can imagine – we really felt that he was genuinely concerned of our well-being. He takes good care of every detail. We usually don’t eat at the hotel but here all the food was so good we didn’t want to go anywhere. And after having Thai-massage once we booked it for every day. It was great to rent a scooter and drive to lovely and empty beaches and see the beautiful nature. Thank you, Oliver, the high light of our trip to Thailand!
