Guest Reviews
- Luis (10/5): Quiet, peaceful area, cozy cabin / cottage - My wife Sheri and I, traveled on vacation together in Sept. from Miami, FL. to Iceland to take a break away from the heat and humidity in Miami to explore Iceland country during Autumn/Winter season. We enjoyed our short stay at the Hellisholar Cottages. My wife really enjoyed the cold weather. We got Free parking included in our stay, Free wifi, hot and cold water, clean room, in a very quiet and peaceful area too.
- Kevin (4/5): - No feekback
- Yonathan (6/5): - I didn’t expect much staying in our rustic cabin the countryside. But for what they charge – the cabin really was not in great shape. There was broken furniture, the kitchenette barely had any silverware. Views are amazing, Location is great, the people are nice. But at least a nice well maintained cabin would be nice.
- Stephanie B Carr (10/5): Great place for our first night in Iceland! - This was our first night in Iceland. We checked in late, however the front desk lady was super friendly and accommodating. We drove up to our cabin and it was a perfect start to our trip. Very rustic and quant. The three of us comfortably slept in a bed each. Would recommend!
- Barbara McInish (6/5): - Very bare bones for the price. Not even any soap. Would not recommend or stay again.
- dinh (8/5): - Bathroom is too small
- Jule (10/5): - Excellent resort property with dinner option. Good is very good at the restaurant.
- Kelly (2/5): - Stayed here a few years ago and loved it. This time there we were placed in a cottage on the end no views surrounded by trees, there were multiple teenagers staying on site who were loud playing music and consrantly knocking on others doors. Room was old and dated, shower ran out of water very quickly so you then had to wait an hour for it to fill up, they provided coffee cups but no spoons or anything to use. Very very basic cottage wouldnt stay again you can get much more for your money staying elsewhere
- evelyn (10/5): - Amazing place to stay, this place was perfect! we paid extra for breakfast but it was well worth it
It is perfect when you are traveling the south coast and apparently it would be amazing during ther northern lights season
- Melanie (8/5): - Cute Cabin - wish breakfast was included for cabin guests.
- Lorna (8/5): - Great stay, thank you
- Hector N (10/5): - Cottages are simple but confortable and conveniently located. Quiet area. Friendly and helpful staff.
- Annemieke (10/5): - Thank you for the great service and relocation to a cabin on Christmas day in the big winter storm. Dinner at the restaurant was one of the best dinners we've ever had.
- Scott (10/5): - This was a great place to stay for our last night in Iceland! We missed the 9 pm time to check in so they left the key for us to pickup with ease!
- Daniel (4/5): - Very small overpriced unit.
- Bianca (10/5): - Cute cottages, great stay
- Mike (10/5): - Quiet location. Small updated cabin was a nice place to stay for a couple of nights.
- Shilpi (6/5): - Did not enjoy it here. Traveled with family of five with young children and cottages have no tvs. Made it very challenging after a hectic travel day. The kitchen amenities is very sparse compared to most cottages we stayed in. It is close to shopping and fuel and hwy 1.
- Rohini (6/5): - Not enough lights on the property to mark the way to cottage
- Jingfen (10/5): - clean, quite, easy, convenient
- Marion (8/5): - Lovely cottage in a rural area, sheep in front of house. Kitchen is exaggerated, two hot plates with a pot and pan. Utensils very old, a microwave would help. Plates, glasses and cups are fine, so you have to work around when you really want to cook. There is no amenities, no coffee, tea or shower gel in the cottage. Fridge is very old, freezer door broken. The water heater lights up the room at night, had to pull the plug. Otherwise comfy bed, it was ok. We enjoyed ourselves nevertheless.
- robyn (6/5): - Great to have our bathroom, and very private
- Calvin (10/5): - Rental car a must to be able to access and visit the surrounding areas. The Italian waitress was very friendly in providing information about the surrounding areas.
Accommodation was fine for the time that we spent there.
Did not access the golf that was on site but did do some amazing day trips from the cottage
- Kaitlyn (10/5): - This was a great overnight stop for us! The cabins were very cute and cozy! We got two of them so that the kids could have their own space - it worked out great! Located in a gorgeous area. Everything was very clean and comfortable! We had a great night sleep here! Breakfast was also very good!
- Wei (10/5): - Beautiful and quiet sitting. Excellent facilities and easy access to central highland. I wish we could have stayed longer.
- John-David (8/5): - These are simple mini huts with a tiny bathroom and clean beds. Nothing fancy. Only a portable water kettle in the room for amenities, great for on the go travelers
- Caroline (4/5): - We received an email with our door code, but it didn’t work. We went to the reception and got a physical key, but they implied that is what we needed all along. So that was a bit confusing since we received a door code in the email.
There was no soap or even a hand towel in the bathroom. Which was pretty inconvenient, that seems like those would be essential items to have. And the dish soap was pretty much water, it’s like it was pretty much empty so someone just filled it from the tap to make it look full again.
It was just fine, but I would not stay here again.
- Maria (10/5): - It was a great stayed
- Lily (10/5): - Pros
- small cottage for 4 people
- comfortable beds
- kitchen utensils (plates, cups, forks, spoons)
- small fridge
- small porch outside
- sheep come to visit us
- beautiful view
Cons
- tiny kitchen
- double check-in but host fixed it quickly
- no space for luggage
- Brooke (10/5): - The individual cabin was great! It slept 6 comfortably. It had a mini fridge, french press coffee maker, and hot water heater.
- Rebecca (10/5): - Cozy little cottage with a full kitchen!
- Meghan (6/5): - We stayed in a studio cottage for one night. The cottage itself was well-kept but felt like lodging you would have at camp. The only option for ventilation was to open the door, and the beds/pillows were of low quality (but still clean). Furthermore, the bathroom is very small with the water heater suspended above the toilet. Showers had to be short, and it was hard to not spill water into the rest of the bathroom. Also, the wi-fi was not functional in our unit. Again, the lodging was well-kept, safe, and in a beautiful area, so I think our dissatisfaction with it comes down to personal preferences. The campsite looked really nice for anyone travelling in campers or spending the night in tents!
- J (6/5): - The pictures of the cute wood cottages are not current. The cottages are quite old and have been painted. The cottages are near a trailer park and does not have the "open field" feel that the pictures suggest. A bit of a letdown.
- Francisco (10/5): - Very nice little cabin, with everything you need to use it as base for exploring the area. Hosts where polite and.check in was very fast. The place has a nice view and surroundings are nice. Far from town, but not a problem if you are driving.
- Whitney (8/5): - These rooms are VERY small - it was barely manageable for the three of us. If you're looking for a bed to sleep in, it's great. If you're looking for more than that, not so much.
- Mike (10/5): - Great little cabin
- John (10/5): - Pretty area, 6 miles from town, peaceful and quiet. Cottage was spotless and well equipped. Check in and out easy.
- Gil (6/5): - Poor maintenance of the cabin.
No router in the cabin along our stay (2 days).
Very good breakfast.
- Axie (8/5): - Cute little cottage - we got one with a separate bedroom. Happy that there was a fridge where we could store our food. Wish we had been told we would need to clean up after ourselves (Remove bedding and sweep) or else pay a cost
- Amy (10/5): - Beautiful farm country property.
- Dolev (10/5): Great place with great pub/restaurant - Great place, the location is beautiful and green
Has a great restaurant/pub with incredible atmosphere. The room (cottage) was what we were looking for and also comfy, although could use a bit of exterior cleaning.
Overall, the stay was wonderful.
- Ritawu (6/5): - Property Located in an area surrounded by beautiful scenery. No toilet paper and basic kitchen cleaning supplies. Hot water in shower was difficult to use.
- Nikolaos (8/5): Nice one - Nice cottage in traditional style.
- Sue (6/5): - Had a bit of difficulty finding it but staff was helpful with emails. Beds were terribly uncomfortable with no sheets and a scratchy duvet.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We loved our stay in the cabin here! It was on a beautiful property and we got an amazing view of the stars and northern lights!
- Stephania (10/5): - It was amazing! Great view of the Northern Lights!!!!
- Amit (8/5): - Nice place to be away in the countryside.with a backdrop of a volcano. It was great place to view the aurora.
- Elizabeth (8/5): A cabin in farm country - It was fun to be really out in the countryside. The cabin, while compact, accommodated four adults and a child pretty well. The kitchen was welcome and got good use, especially after the helpful service staff gave us some less battered pans. The property also offers restaurant, golf course, and other services, but we did not take too much advantage.
- Philip (10/5): Excellent place to stay. - Stayed one night and the cottage was perfect for our family of four. The place was very clean and had everything we need to cook a small meal. Wifi worked well and would come back again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Threatened to charge 50 euro if we didn’t clean the place. No paper towels or dish towel to dry dishes. Toaster shorted out the electricity. Pots and pans were in rough shape. Would have been much better if the owner spent a couple hundred euro on some minor upgrades.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The location suited us well, the host was nice and friendly and the house was a nice size, we had everything we needed. We were a family of 4. Just the cleanliness of the place was disappointing for us.
- Marcie (8/5): Small cabin makes good home base - Small cabin with just the basics. Bed was comfy. Onsite restaurant was fine. Good location with access to the south shore and golden circle.
- Veronica (6/5): - We thought we will get cooking facilities and all we found was a kettle and 3 mugs, not even a spoon to stir the tea in a cold night.
The shower was very messy, the water was splashed all over
- Bhuwan (10/5): - Nice cozy cottage with all the amenities. Little kitchenette comes really handy. They do have on site Restauranta as well. Nice family owned property.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice cottage in the middle of nowhere(that's what we wanted). Very nice place
- Mugenv6 (8/5): - I like the country feel and rural setting of the cottages
The shower stall could use better doors and seals to keep water from splashing all over the bathroom floor,
- Verified traveler (6/5): - we were not too happy about stripping our own bedding
- Michael (10/5): Great Stay! - What an amazing experience we had. Couple of things to note that could ruin your stay if you're not aware. Heating is good but in cold months it could take an hour or so to properly heat up. You do have to strip the bed sheets or get charged extra, we knew about this and it really didn't take much time. The last thing is the bathroom situation. The bathroom is a shower, toilet and sink very close together. There is not enough hot water to shower more than 1 person, even 1 person needs to be quick or the water will run out and it takes about an hour to get warm again. There are other communal showers at the camping area, again not a bit issue if you're prepared. What could be bad is that there is no block for the water in the bathroom. We had the smaller two bed cottage so after the shower the water all over the bathroom and leaked under the door, and got all over the room. With the sweepers we cleaned everything up. Had we showered at night or stayed an extra day this could've been uncomfortable. Suggestion is to put a towel down under the door to try and keep the water in or shower at the camp showers. If you're staying one night it's not a big deal just shower in the morning. Highly recommend this for the price/area especially for Northern Light seekers. If you're on a good night you can see them clearly from here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Super cute little cabin in the fields! - Difficult to find, way out in the middle of a field to nowhere, but perfect views of the landscaped white mountains, golf course, green fields. The cottage had not been stayed in for a little bit, so it took a good 3-4 hours to warm up with the radiotors, and we ended up sitting in our car for warmth until it did. It's a very cute cabin with everything you need, we definitely enjoyed it. The large buffet breakfast in the morning made the stay even more enjoyable. The cutest little place!
- Brett (8/5): - Nice quiet location and rooms were exactly as advertised.
- Lynne (10/5): - We enjoyed our two day stay, nice elocation. It was so nice to have the registration desk within a large dining area where we could see and meet other people.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great comfortable cabin with the necessities :)
- Colin (10/5): Just amazing - Amazing
- Julia (8/5): Nice - We stayed at a cottage for 4 nights. Very good location and helpful staff. Cottage clean and comfortable. In our opinion it needs a little more amenities for the kitchen and Some small closet could help. We had enough hot water but at very low pressure. And although we been there at August we were able to see a Northern Light!
.
- Tricia (8/5): - Great location for us. Lots of amenities available.
- Magdalena (10/5): Magical cottage with Stunning Views - We had an amazing time in Iceland and having the comfort of a cozy cottage was an extra bonus. Our cottage was warm and cozy when we first arrived. It was clean and looked just like the pictures. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare coffee and breakfast. We had a great stay.
- Matt (6/5): Shortstay cabin - Quaint cabins close to the foot of E15 volcano. Easy access to Ring Road, Seljalandfoss and other attractions. Cabins are too small for 5 adults. Should be okay for family of 2 adults and small children. The shower in our bathroom leaked and was too tight a space. Good for a 1 night stay.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very minimal amenities offered for a studio cabin. Expected more than what we got. The cleanliness of the cabin leaves something to be desired. Will not come back. Disappointed, was hoping for a better stay.
- Ivan (10/5): Iceland 1st stop - The place is wonderful. The cleanest air I ever breath in my life. I was really happy to breath. Ir was magical.
- Jennifer (8/5): - The cottages were very nice looking. But the bathroom was not clean. I also did not realize you have to "clean" your own room (or you will be charged 50 Euros). The welcome binder states you have to remove all sheets and sweep up, which is fine if you are not paying a lot. However this hotel was about $250 for one night (that is a lot for us and I would expect this for a $100 per night place). The heater did not work in the bedroom, but luckily the one in the main area worked and it was summer). Also, they only provide a body towel. If you like wash cloths or bath mats or hand towels, make sure to bring your own. The shower was very dirty, so no one used it. We were just there for one night. It would be nice if they have a pull down blind for the main door. The glass is frosted, however if you are sleeping in that room then you can see the sun all night long (went during summer). The area is beautiful and this cottage has great potential! Just make sure you have your expectations set that you are not going to have a clean bathroom. The food at the restaurant was good (dinner). We had the hamburgers and they were delicious. They were about $22 per hamburger, but that is expected in Iceland.
- Cristina (4/5): - Pros:
- location
- has activities on site (for additional fees) in case you are traveling with family and need to entertain kids
Cons:
- you have to clean your cottage (sweep and mop floor, remove pillow cases and duvet covers and leave on floor) or they will charge you €50 extra for doing that little bit of housekeeping. I don’t understand why it would inconvenience them so much to do that themselves if we are paying for room.
- on the welcome book, it says to remove bed sheets and leave on floor but our beds were never even made with bed sheets just had a dirty mattress cover. I told the person at check out and he said that was fine which makes me wonder if they will just leave the mattress covers for the next guests without washing them.
- one bath towel (no head towel and no bath mat) for entire stay
- no shampoo or body wash ( I don’t agree with the little bottles because that is a waste but so many places that are cheaper than this hotel have the shampoo dispensers set up against the shower wall - I think that are being cheap by not providing this).
I can live with little and don’t really care for fancy amenities but what really got me was the “clean” the room or you get charged €50. It took us less than a minute to remove the pillow cases and duvet covers so no big deal but since we are paying, I don’t see why they couldn’t spend the extra minute doing that themselves.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - rooms were very small, only two bed in the room, no space for luggage's.In the room there were some dust but OK for me. It could be better if there is a dishwasher and more quality in furniture's. Good location to see Northern Lights.
- Greg (10/5): Comfortable for four - Our family of four was happy in the cabin. It was clean and the beds were very comfortable. We took advantage of the hot tub too. This was a good place to stay as we were touring the many great sites nearby. I would stay here again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Out of date and too expensive - Although beautifully sited with friendly staff, the cottages are tired and shabby. This would all be ok if it were reflected in the price.
- Daphne (8/5): Cozy Cottage. - We are a group of 5 adults who stayed in a 2-bedroom cottage for 1 night. The cottage was cozy, clean and tidy with basic amenities. There is also a kitchenette (kettle, hot plates, microwave, toaster, and bar fridge), but the hot plates in our unit were weak, where you could not even fry an egg for breakfast. The shower stall is super small, so keep this in mind if you prefer space while you lather. No TV but wifi signal was strong.
The cottage is approx. 20-25 minutes from the closest town Hvolsvollur, and you will have to trust your GPS when you drive to the property because it does look like its in the middle of nowhere. However the compound includes a campground for RVs, cottages, a restaurant, and a golf course.
Also, similar to camp cabins, you are expected to strip the beds on the day of departure, which was unexpected as we thought it offered hotel services, and not DIY, since we booked this through Expedia.
Overall the cottage was sufficient for our 1 night stay and we would visit again when we are in Iceland.
- Donna (4/5): Would not recommend - Hotel room was not clean. Bathroom was tiny. We arrived late and had to turn on the hot water heater, which took an hour to warm up. We had to take the sheets off and sweep up ourselves or they will charge 50 euros. Not exactly my idea of a $300 hotel stay.
- natalie (8/5): Nice, quiet country cottages. Spacious for 5 - Great place to get some shut eye. Golf course, fishing and a playground.
- Yong Mean (8/5): - Something wrong with wifi internet, but I could not get from anyone after 9 pm.
- Benjamin (6/5): Ok but I don't recommend. - It was Ok. For the price it was a little on the dirty side and the list of chores was unwelcome. But I wouldn't stay again. Plus there was a discrepancy in the price. The reception blamed it on hotels.com but were also very unhelpful with the issue...basically they didn't want to deal with it or explain the price difference.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Very accommodating - I booked this cottage very last minute and checked in around 10:30pm. I'm traveling with theee people so I got the cottage studio which sleeps three. In the information it says the room has one twin bed and twin bunk beds. When we arrived, the check on went great and we go our keys quick. The room only had two twin beds. No bunk bed. I went back and explained the situation to the manager, he apologized immediately and upgraded is to a bigger cottage that sleeps 4 and had a great kitchen area with a fantastic view.
- javier (4/5): Misleading advertising - We booked the cottage because of the photos display in the advertising for the 15sq m2 cottage. At the arrival they give us one with out a kitchen and when we raise the issue the staff was defensive and not helpful, even though they told us they will change the photos of the advertising because they are confusing. Not a great experience, because they promo something and give you less , then they say you are rights but they still defend that is the way things work ,not given you any compensation for they error. Hellisholar cottage has lose 3 customers ,who would never recommend the stay there to they friend, because of the staff attitude.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Rustic cabin, good basic accommodations. - Four of us stayed for one night. The cabin was clean, cozy and warm. There were two bedrooms plus two beds in the main room, so you could get a number of people in if you wanted to. Bathroom with plenty of hot water and kitchenette. We had 4 and it was the perfect size. You have to make and strip your own beds, empty your own trash and leave the cabin broom clean. Not a problem but I mention it because, again, rustic. We ate at the restaurant because we were tired and it's kind of out in the country. The food was okay, filling but nothing special. Friendly staff, beautiful location.
- Lauren (6/5): Cozy cottage but inaccurate pictures - The cottage was cute and scenic background but the RV park right next door was unsightly and the cottage itself was nothing like what we were expecting based on the photos which was disappointing. There was maybe 2 minutes worth of hot water and the floor was dirty.
- Lauren (6/5): Cozy cottage but inaccurate pictures - The cottage was cute but was not at all like what was shown in the pictures pre-booking. D
- Luise (10/5): Cute little cottage in quiet & beautiful location - We arrived an hour before check-in and the door to reception was locked. We were helped really quickly by the son of the owner and within minutes we were able to check in. It was so easy. We later asked for more towels, bigger cups, a broom stick etc and received all those items within minutes as well. Everyone was so friendly. Our cottage was located at the end of the entire complex which we really enjoyed as we could see the Northern Lights from our bed room one night and it was nice to be away from the groups of tourists. We highly recommend Hellisholar Cottages.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - When we first got to the front desk it was dark, apparently the lights went out and it was a little chaotic. Waited a few minutes for a guy to help me check in. Turns out they leave your keys and receipt containing some CC info in a box outside. Would be nice if they told us this ahead of time. Went to the cottage and the restroom flush wasn't working correctly had to go to the front and ask the guy to come help. He came and somehow fixed it. Throughout the night we found blood stains and yellow stains on our bed and pillows. There was also mold on some blankets.
Before you leave you must clean the place wash the dishes sweep the floors and place all blankets and linens by the door. Basically doing your own housekeeping or they will charge you additional 50 euros to your card. Probably won't ever stay here again or recommend this to anyone.
- Amy (6/5): - The cottage was very pleasant. We liked how quiet and secluded it was. It's easy to get around from the cottage. The only complaint was that we were not made aware that the shower is actually outside of the cottage. It was right outside the front door, in what we thought was, a storage closet. For winter in Iceland, it was definitely not ideal. None of us used it due to the fact that it was freezing outside. We also had to make our own beds once we arrived and take the bedding down before we left. Not a big deal, but still a nuisance since we were tired once we arrived. Otherwise, the cottage was fine!
- Heather (6/5): Quiet cabin - Decent place to stay if you're in the area. Nothing special, though it was quiet and clean. All you need if you're coming in late after a hike and hitting the road early.
- Michael (10/5): excellent - very nice. big room. fully equipped. parking is not a problem. just spend the night so no opioin about the golf course
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The cabin was perfect for our needs. Small and cozy but the tiny kitchenette was great to cook a quick dinner. Remote feel but still close to a city and good roads to drive there
- Julian (10/5): Very nice spacious cottages - Very nice spacious cottages with great views, very cozy and great place to spend some time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great privacy and roominess - Detached cottages. Would be a great family getaway
- Colm (6/5): Nice cottages that were a small but rough around t - Limited hot water which was annoying. Beds weren't super comfortable and were quite small. Had missing curtains in places. Otherwise was nice. Good wifi, good size, very clean.
- alex (8/5): - Great location and simple facilities, worked perfectly for our stop on the ring road
- Bill (8/5): convenient, quite, midpoint location - convenient location for driving to South island sights, quite and good location for northern lights
- Damon (8/5): - This little cabin made of logs was small, but comfortable and moderately well equipped with a small kitchen. The linens appeared to be clean and fresh. However, it was difficult to find a switch to turn off the intense porch light when ready to sleep! WiFi worked fine. We were too late to try the restaurant (more like a large cafeteria) or hot tub/pool.The shower is small, but functional, with adequate hot water despite the tiny tank. If you come from the South East on the Ring Road, be aware that Rt. 250 to Hlidarendi is a little rough (corrugated) by my standards and may be very rough by yours; but it is not an 'F' road. If you want a more comfortable ride, go to Hvolsvollur and take Rt. 261 to Hellisholar. Use SadCars for rentals. It's dark, so look up later at night for Auroras.
- Dana (8/5): Beautiful Cottages - A lot of accomodations and things to do here. A perfect place to see the northen lights!!
- Sherry (6/5): Cute cottage with a view. - Cute little cottage that was a fun stay for our family. The staff was extemely knowledgeable about the area and have great recommendations on things to do and places to visit. The outside shower gave us a great chuckle and good memories.
- Valeria (8/5): Unique, quiet country cottage - Stayed 1 night, very memorable unique experience!
I would recommend it!!!
- Vesper (8/5): Well-appointed cabins at base of Eyafjallajökull - The setting of these cabins could not have been more beautiful. About 10 minutes up the road off the Hvollsvollur exit from the Ring Road (1), it's a very quiet countryside setting. We had a single and 2 bunk beds and were extremely comfortable. The shower was a little rustic as it's partially outdoors, but even on a chilly morning I had a really nice shower. It's not luxury--it's a cabin, after all--but everything was very clean and we had what we needed for a lovely couple of days. Highly recommended.
