Guest Reviews
- Lawrencehon (7/5): Good - Probably one of the better hotels in the area. Good location. Nice property. Shower was a bit old/outdated/not fully functional. Toilet didn't flush properly and we had to call the manager to fix it.
- Herko (8/5): Very good -
- Cindy (7/5): Good - Such a wonderful ambiance, with it's own Temple at the bottom of well manicured gardens! Beautiful pool, gorgeous lighting! Traditional Bagan puppets hanging throughout the gardens, lovely friendly staff...Beds comfortable, Bathrooms are basic, outdated, smell from drains. Breakfast time finished a bit early. Coffee making facilities basic, however, when requested bigger cups, staff helpful.
- Gary (2/5): Bagan is magical the hotel let it down - The pool area were good. Quality of food The bedrooms were dirty. Unclean bedding, Bathroom more like you would find at a cheap hostel
- Zoe (5/5): Passable - Location and hotel setting pool area and garden lovely. Staff were friendly and food and drink reasonable Rooms were dirty, hot water not working, alongside various other broken things in room including the kettle. Manager had to be persuaded to put the generator on during power cuts. My friends were asked to move rooms.
- Yurii (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andreas (10/5): AMAZINGLY STAY ❤️❤️❤️ refreshing pool and delicious meal , everything clean -
- Wenyu (10/5): Beautiful property in a good location, large size rooms, very friendly staff. Mr. Myo Khaing, the Operation Manager, was -
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional - The hotel facilities are very nice the hotel has a very varied breakfast , the rooms need a remodeling. But because of the conditions the country can understand, beware you can only pay in dollars at the hotel cash in the evenings the light goes out.
- Shaun (7/5): Will definitely go back - Food outstanding service very good cleanliness for age of premises excellent Nothing comments come to mind
- Veronika (9/5): Very nice and helpful stuff, arranged bus ticket for me and found the best tuck-tuck driver. - Friendly stuff, location, swimming pools, small nice pagoda at the end of the garden Door locks system which is very nosy
- Sergio (10/5): Great and beautiful hotel with lovely staff - Se loved our stay in Umbra Hotel
If you to Bagan this is really a great option!
It’s in Old Bagan and has its own temple inside
The rooms and facilities are very good and food and restaurants are very good also!
The staff is super friendly and kind!! That they don’t accept credit or debit cards and we stayed a week so it is difficult to carry or get that much cash to pay
And when we tried to pay in euros they did not accept them and when they finally agreed to take them they gave us a rate -40% of market value
If you go take enough USD that’s the easiest and cheapest way to pay
- Pravin (3/5): Booking.com should remove them from listing - Well-appointed room. Nice food The behaviour of the staff at the time of check in was abysmal. They insisted that we pay the full price in cash and in USD. This is in spite of the booking clearly says that they accept credit cards. We had a 9 month old baby with us and they refused to allocate a room until we pay in USD in cash. Apparently, this is due to the difference in exchange rate between black market and official rate. A poor practice with this kind of hotels. Not worth listing with Booking.com
- Dahee (10/5): Perfect resort😍 - Omg.. if you are looking for a hotel in Bagan, you need to stay in Umbra Hotel in Bagan!! The bed, water, toilet, view, staffs are all good:) the hotel is much bigger and nicer than the pictures! Nope
(Pay with dollars is better) I stayed at the end of Sep in 2023
- Juliet (10/5): Awesome - All facilities from room, pool evening pool side services etc
- Paul (10/5): great location, super friendly staff. - location, it’s like staying in a tropical garden with its own ancient temple.
the staff are super helpful and friendly. the breakfast was fresh and a variety of choices. I’d stay again and recommend it to others. They only take cash, and in the area no ATMs work! I had enough for the room, meals outside and the bus. Regular power cuts occur, but that doesn’t bother me. Remember we are visiting.
- Denise (10/5): Oase in Bagan. Traumpool. Erholung pur - Wunderbares, freundliches Servicepersonal.
- philip (10/5): A very pleasant stay - Excellent location just north of Bagan. Just a short walk to the Hot Air Ballooning ticket office. Peaceful location - and a great swimming pool with an infinity drop facing a stupa.
Staff very friendly and helpful.
Restaurant and food very good with local Burmese dancing every night.
Hotel is highly recommended.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Ming Thim (8/5): Pleasant stay in Bagan - Pleasant hotel with nice landscape. There are many restaurants just outside the hotel and an electric bike rental stall. Breakfast is good.
- sonia (8/5): Great pool rest so so - Pool is the best part of this hotel. Room was small dark and dated. Terrible smell in bathroom. Better value in other hotels. Average breakfast.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good times in Bagan - Nice, clean hotel with comfortable rooms, great pool and attractive grounds. Single biggest issue .... very bad internet connectivity.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - lovely grounds and view of temple from the pool side. Very friendly and helpful staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very nice location and facility.
I do enjoy the transport arranged by staffs.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Situated in Old Bagan this hotel provides an excellent location to base yourself.
We stayed 5 nights in a grand deluxe room overlooking the pool. These are the best rooms and worth every dollar.
Try eating in the hotel, the meals are reasonably priced and tasty.
- Triin (8/5): Great breakfast, beautiful grounds - The hotel is very comfortable and well located close to the temples. The grounds were well kept and looked really nice. The food at the restaurant and at breakfast was wonderful and reasonably priced. The breakfast buffet was amazing. The shower had great pressure and plenty of hot water, but unfortunately no ventilation so the bathroom was damp all night. The staff were all great and really friendly.
The negative side was when we rented the e-bikes from the hotel, we were suddenly quoted 50% extra since we (2 peope) were going to ride on the same bike. There really was no reason for that.
Another issue we came against often during our trip, was the price of local transport. Having taken taxis in Yangon and knowing the cost of rides, the prices that we were charged in Bagan for an hour's taxi ride were 5-6x the price for the corresponding time in Yangon. It's not necessarily the hotel's fault, they probably have no way around the issue and the prices are controlled by the local 'cartel'. Something to be aware of.
- Greg (8/5): - Gardens very beautiful. Staff provided good service. Only downside was bathroom in room. We stayed here n deluxe room 404. Shower combined with toilet and sink. Shower drain extremely slow. One inch of water on floor after normal shower. Took few hours to drain and dry. Smell results. Really needs fixing.
- arm (10/5): - The hotel is beautifully decorated, shady, clean, with a very wide area.
Breakfast has a lot to choose from and delicious.
The staff did not give me the right advice. For the process of booking a bus to return to Mandalay Causing me to hire a taxi myself Which is very expensive and I have to pay myself all.
- Danielle (10/5): Great hotel - The hotel is great but they could improve on the WiFi
- Anand (8/5): Good hotel. - Good hotel. Nice pool.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff is extremely helpful. they helped us to arrange the bike rental and allow us to pick it up around 5:30 am for sunrise. The hotel is a resort. It has beautiful setting and occupies a big area. So we can take a break at the hotel.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It has a nice pool. My bathroom was smelly though and the sheets and towels need replacing. A snake crossed my path one morning - I heard snakes are common in this area so not really the fault of the hotel but I was terrified.
- Verified traveler (10/5): All-around great stay in Bagan - I truly enjoyed my time here... It's a comfortable, clean and convenient place -- with an amazing swimming pool and excellent breakfast buffet!
- Crazy (8/5): Near all sites - Good location with lots of good and cheap restaurants near by.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Overall it's great with Pros + Cons - My GF and I spent a few days here and enjoyed the experience overall with three caveats.
PROS: The gardens and hotel looks lovely, the location is superb; staff are always pleasant and range from conversational (lobby greeters) to overwhelmed (reception desk) to confused (spa + restaurant).
CONS: Food is way overpriced and uninspired, service is slow and lacklustre; a chipped glass was served (honest mistake but not one that would get past a decent F*B manager. The menu needs an overhaul and fresh ingredients would be a great start. Breakfast buffet is better.
The Spa is ridiculous -- don't bother -- from the bright lights and basic decor of the rooms, to the overly complicated menu that promises fantasy but delivers what I can only compare to the preparation of a chicken before you roast it. My GF particularly loved the way pedicure items and oils were used on one person and then lined up for her next without even a thought about hygiene. They need to get in a professional team.
Reception is confusing for one reason: they don't have stations for checkin/out or enquiries/concierge. So you get everyone trying to be served at the same time, and quick transactions get stuck behind slow ones. Behind the desk they do their best but anyone who knows hotels will see the manager needs a better system.
- molinie (8/5): Relaxing hotel with great swimming pool - Very nice hotel. Not a boutique hotel but really good room nice swimming pool quiet surrounding . Deluxe room can have view on nice sunset on temple . Staff is lovely. Great for family
- JEFFREY (10/5): Bagon but not forgotten! - The staff were fabulous. I had trouble with my booking for the Bagan to Mandalay boat trip and the staff made available their desk computer to try and sort the booking out. They went above and beyond the call of duty!!!!!!
- juliana (8/5): Well located hotel - The hotel was very nice and the staff was very friendly. We got very early and they helped us with early check in. The staff did not presented all the facilities or services of the hotel, so we had to find them by our selves. Breakfast was delicious.
- Blythe (8/5): - Stay was great, super convenient location. Beautiful pool and very good breakfast. Good value for money.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good if you don't need internet - Nice hotel with nice facilities. Location close to archeological area. Unfortunately they seem not to care about wifi connectivity, so if you want to surf for information you can only do at the lobby area. The evening restuarant is at the pool area with very nice setting, but again: service and food not even clise to expectation. Overall, nice hotel that can give a nicer experience if they fix the internet connection and the food service.
- cheng (10/5): Hire a driver - The staff was very helpful. Unfortunately, they don't rent out bikes or scooters. However, you can hire a driver which is really cheap for a day or half day. The hotel also had live music which I didn't know about in advance. Breakfast was actually good on days when they had Burmese options. Bacon is always perfectly crisp. No phone in my room but luckily my room was across from the front desk. There's a thanaka station in the lobby - don't forget to make your own.
- Jessica (8/5): Great location. - Great room and great resort feel. 2 pools and staff ready to assist for anything you need. Able to walk to restaurants but you'll need a electric bike rental to visit pagodas and market since it's so warm. Wifi did not work at all.
- Kiran (10/5): - Friendly staff, Nice swimming pools. Clean tidy rooms. Central location
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Small but very comfortable room with excellent shower.
The pool was a particular feature with a nice poolside bar.
- Kristin (8/5): - We originally booked into a standard room, but the quality was akin to a North American dive motel. I first updated to a deluxe, but quickly changed that to a grand deluxe that offered the comforts of home. This final room was nice and well-appointed. We were much happier once in this nicer room, but of course the cost to upgrade was more than initially budgeted for.
The grounds of the hotel are nice, with a beautiful infinity pool and lovely garden. There is a second pool by the lower-end rooms as well.
Unfortunately, there is a mosque nearby that has somebody over the loudspeaker constantly intoning his religious word. We heard it as early as 5am and as late as 10pm. It does not stop at all throughout the day. It makes enjoying the pool and grounds a bit of a challenge. This is, of course, not the hotel's fault, but an unfortunate location issue.
- Pete (8/5): Lovely hotel perfectly situated in Bagan - We took the overnight bus from Yangon, and after watching the sunrise from one of the beautiful pagodas arrived at the Umbra early in the morning - well before check-in time. We would've been happy just to leave our luggage, go exploring for a few hours and check in later, but the staff called up housekeeping and found us a room straight away. Granted, it's the slow season, but good on them. We got to check in, shower and change after a very long bus trip.
We were also flying back to Yangon very early the next morning (leaving the hotel at the crack of dawn) and would've missed the included breakfast. I explained our plans to the front desk and asked if we could possibly have breakfast that morning rather than the next - of course! No problem! was the reply. And the breakfast buffet is very good - mostly Western style with a few Asian and local options. So lovely getting cleaned up and heading to the restaurant for bacon, sausages, fruit, excellent coffee, toast, marmalade, etc.
Getting around is no problem - you can arrange electric bikes and taxis directly at the front desk, or do as we did and just cross the road to engage a horse cart. Location is perfect - halfway between Old Bagan and Nyaung U. Visit pagodas and temples during the day, head into Nyaung U for great food at night.
- Chen (8/5): Pleasant Stay at Bagan - Bagan Umbra Hotel provide an excellent breakfast at pool side. On our first day of stay, we were given the front room, it was a very bad experience on our first day because the room have more than 20 mosquito, we ask for electric mosquito killer but they don't have, they only provide mosquito spray. We request to change our room on 2nd day, the mosquito are lesser around 5, so we were able to kill then, hahaha. Nonetheless, it's worth to stay in this hotel, I love the breasfast specially the mohinga soup.
- Hector (8/5): Very good if you stay in the new building - Nice hotel with goode up to high standards rooms, but bear in mind I am only speaking about the new building where the top rooms are, and so the most expensive. As you cans see from the older buildings those are 2 to 3 star rating, and even have a much less nicer pool.
The room was large, comfortable beds and friendly and helpful stuff since the moment we arrived. Clean and extremely welcoming and enjoyable altogether.
Located in between Old and New Bagan, it's perfect location for starting your tour of Old Bagan and elsewhere. Outside, few min walk along the road you have good restaurants to chose, and small supermarkets.
The breakfast was good and kept rotating often through the opening hours. Served by the infinity pool area.
What we did not like was the dirty water in the infinity pool. Full of moss since they do not hover the bottom. We told them about it but did not do anything. Otherwise it would have got a 5 star rating from us.
- Luke (10/5): Bagan - Had a great stay for 6 nights
- Lee (8/5): Overall is fairy good - Found the shower place feeling dirty and old!
Air con seems need to improve as well! It definitely no enough while hot season! As I feel a little not enough in day time in my early March trip
- Kristen (10/5): Good value for your money - Bagan Umbra is in a great location on the main road with several restaurants within walking distance. The hotel itself is great, a very well kept property. I was in Room 205 and like others have pointed out, the bathroom could use updating but the shower worked (typically Asian with no curtains) and plenty of hot water. The staff was great--very helpful. Highly recommend this hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Decent hotel - go for the premium room if you can - Very enjoyable. You can hire a motorised scooter. This hotel sits in between old and new bagan. One thing to note is the Standard room quality was quite a big difference from the premium so i would recommend paying abit more for the premium if you can
- Gregory (6/5): Beautiful Began - We stayed in 2 different room types, the standard and deluxe. The standard was nicely renovated and brightly lit with a new bed. The much better value. The pool and restaurant are lovely. Breakfast is a bit bizarre, out in the garden near the main road, instead of in the back where the view is lovely. The staff had difficulty in keeping the buffet stocked as the hotel was fully booked. Similarly, the front desk were unable to advise or assist us on travel arrangements as they were simply too busy. They served instant coffee at breakfast. The location is a bit too far from town to walk to restaurants.
- LOIC (8/5): - Very nice hotel with swimming pool and garden, however the standard rooms are a bit old and pigeons on the roof are very annoying! Get a deluxe it will be better I guess...
- tim s (8/5): centrally located, 5 mins by E bike from old bagan - he hotel rooms we had were spacious and clean, with a large TV. there are two pools, but everyone uses the infinity pool which is lit at night - very nice.
The food was very good - Oddly the restaurant is a bit out of place being like a large ballroom. it is not an endearing room to eat in. But every-one seems to eat by the pool so it is not a problem.
the staff were very helpful organising taxis and e bikes (although newer bikes are available from other outlets)
- Hui Min (10/5): Superb value for money! - Great value for the price we paid. We didn't expect to get a flat screen tv in our room and the room was spacious and clean. Love the surroundings. A short distance away from the stupas but with the bike it's not a big problem. Fantastic experience and highly recommended!
- Peter (8/5): A Good Hotel to make your base - I took my Thai wife & her 11yo grand-daughter to see the world heritage site at Bagan. Accomodation was scarce and Bagan Umbra was more up-market than I would have normally chosen. Glad we took it though. Very comfortable room, a good breakfast and 3 (THREE) swimming pools to enjoy after a days sightseeing. Only minus was we were there on a Buddhist day and there is a (modern) temple next door in which a monk droned on all night over a PA system. Can recommend this hotel highly.
- anita (10/5): Best hotels in Bagan - Very nice hotel quiet and comfortable.
Nice swimming pool.
- single traveler (8/5): a comfortable place to stay - I really enjoyed this hotel particularly because it had an excellent pool in which to cool off after a day of walking around in the heat.
- Matt (2/5): Beware, don't let them fool you - The first room we were put in was disgusting, dirty walls with splatters of all sorts of things on it completed by footprints. The bathroom was moldy and extremely dirty with pieces of cocking coming out of the bathtub. There were also parts of the bathroom covered in mold and places were puddles of water would form by them self and reform once dried. We requested to have the room changed and were given an "upgrade" to a deluxe room that was in better condition but did not have hot water. Once again we asked to be switched to a different room and final were given a half decent room that still did not resemble even close the pictures of what we booked on expedia but did have got water. Stay away from this hotel. It did look that they have a newer side of the resort where maybe the rooms are better. Will not stay here ever again. Only good thing is the location. Staff barely speaks English so getting the room changed was an undertaking...
- M & M (8/5): Nice Hotel - Unfortunately, we arrived at the hotel at 8 AM, when, at that time, they didn't have the room we reserved ready. So we took whatever they had available at that time. The room was dated, needed a lot of improvement, but it worked for us. Very clean. The grounds of the property are nice and clean, the restaurant is very good, with delicious food and outstanding service.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Limited Confidence in Front Desk Staff - Things worked out but the front desk staff often seemed confused and contradictory in making arrangements or bookings and were aggravating to deal with. The rooms were good and clean, nice pool, but the breakfast while wide in selection wasn't very tasty and the water and extras were over priced even compared with a better hotel I stayed out in Bagan.
