Guest Reviews
- Jane (8/5): - Lovely place to stay. Fabulous breakfast and views to die for. We’ll definitely be back.
- Ninon (10/5): - Amazing views. Delicious breakfast served to our room.
- Melody (10/5): - Casa de Canilhas is the most beautiful property. Staying here was like a dream. The view of the Douro valley & river are breathtaking. The rooms have a rustic vineyard feel, but are beautifully upgraded with modern standards. The infinity pool was perfect temperature & overlooking the valley of grape vines. The daily breakfast was delicious and so fresh. More than enough. the staff was very pleasant & have the property in pristine condition and well maintained. I can’t wait to come back.
- Tammy or Kevin (10/5): - We had an amazing stay that was so relaxing, beautiful and peaceful. The pool, gardens and river views were spectacular. The breakfast was also wonderful. We would definitely stay here again.
- Carolyn (10/5): - This property is beautiful.
- Donna (10/5): - Such a wonderful place. We loved every minute. Its absolutely beautiful, has a refreshing pool and nearby restaurants. The picnic breakfast each morning, brought to your room in a basket was such a surprising treat.
- dominique (10/5): - wonderful place with unbelievable location and view of the Douro river and Douro valley, located in the middle of the vineyards, it is a very special experience enjoying both the comfort of the villa and the beauty of the scenery all around.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful stay--highly recommend. - We had a most wonderful stay at Casa de Canilhas in the Douro Valley. Our room overlooked the Douro, we had lovely sunny weather, and sitting on the balcony was so peaceful. We walked into town for dinner one evening and bought food at the grocery to eat on the balcony the second evening. Most highly recommend.
- Carlos (10/5): - It had a stunning view of the countryside, the furnishings and ambience of the property were very stylish, and the staff was very friendly and accommodating.
- alfredo (10/5): - Beautiful place, highly recommended
- Harold (10/5): - Nice environment, nice rooms, beautiful views, very good breakfast and nice hosts. We definitely recommend. Thank you!
- Jane (8/5): - Casa de Canilhas is a tucked away treasure in the heart of the Douro valley. A bit hard to find at first but once you're there it's worth a visit. There are no common indoor areas so you stay in your room or on a private terrace but can share the gorgeous outdoor pool. Breakfast is served to you in your room. Unfortunately, there was work being done in the building next to my casita: the noise and radio started at 8 AM which detracted from the peace and magic of the area
- Paul (10/5): Great little place! - Loved the views frim our terrace, and our picnic breakfasts were just perfect. Its a little off the beaten track, but worth the drive.
- Steve (10/5): - Parfait👌 juste la route pour s’y rendre qui est un peu rock’n’roll mais fallait aussi s’y attendre😏
- Surjit (8/5): - Hotel is very nice. It is family run. Loved the view overlooking the river. Really calm and tranquil. Very nice hosts.
The main issue with this was with Expedia booking. They failed to tell us that this hotel does not accept credit cards— they only accept cash. We found out when we were already in Portugal.
Hosts were apologetic and told us that Expedia has been told multiple times about the payment in cash only.
Despite my e-mails to Expedia team, I never received any response. Very disappointed with Expedia.
- JoAnne (8/5): - The property is all about the views, which are amazing. The infinity pool is gorgeous. We were told we had a room with a view. We actually had a room with no windows, only a side door that opened onto a patio which had gorgeous views, but not the room itself. Breakfast in the morning was excellent served on the patio. The room had spotty wifi. Better wifi was available in the public living room. The property is far from almost everything. To get to it are a lot of narrow, winding roads. The little town of Masao Frio had very few restaurant choices. The next closest town is 20 minutes on scary roads for driving at night. The staff were less than helpful and not all of them friendly. We were told we did not need a dinner reservation at their recommended place if we got to town before 7:30. At 7:15 the restaurant said their next available table was after 9 PM. We were told at check-in that we had to prepay with cash, no credit cards accepted. Lucky we just about had enough cash; we were not told in advance.
- Thomas (10/5): A Dream to Relax In - Such a relaxing, elegant respite from an enchanting day in the Douro Valley...of course. With an salt water infinity pool and picnic breakfast delivered to the room, and a million dollar (Euro?) view of the Douro River, surrounded by vinyards; and friendly, responsive staff...it doesn't get better than this.
- MaryKathryn (6/5): - Room on first floor built into cliff was moldy. Pool not heated. Breakfast uninspired.
- Jean-pierre (10/5): - Très belle endroit,paysage à couper le souffle.
Merci
- Caryn (8/5): - It was very picturesque, views were incredible and the staff are very friendly. Our room was on the second floor which had a shared balcony with 2 other rooms so not much privacy and you could hear everyone’s conversations. Also be aware when choosing this hotel that they don’t accept credit cards, only cash. We did not get that notification and were not prepared to have that much cash at check in. (The manager was quite rude about it but another staff member helped us find a solution.)
- Andre (10/5): Douro Heaven - An absolutely perfect place! An all fronts. And Barbara ad Viktor, owners, were wonderful. All staff fantastic! We will be back!!
- Daniel (8/5): - The property is located in a prime location within the Douro valley and the view from our room was world class. It is a beautiful hotel and setting. Our only negative was the word at check in that they did not accept credit cards..... The local ATM only dispensed up to E200 every 24 hours..... Not acceptable in this day and age,
- sally (10/5): - Amazing in every way! Best view! Best helpful staff. We didn’t bring cash- forgot they don’t take cards Titianna was so helpful and patient. Best staff at any hotel I’ve been in- anywhere. PayPal did the trick. The breakfast was the best ever! View of the Douro from our table! Room was cozy. Great dining recommendation. We felt so taken care of there. It was by far, the best place we have stayed in Portugal! The home is beautiful as is everything. We didn’t want to leave.
- Rose (10/5): - Absolutely stunning guesthouse in the Douro valley with well appointed rooms. Peaceful and pastoral with a more than accommodating and pleasant staff. The view of the Douro valley from our terrace was breathtaking. We stayed 4 nights, but were sad to leave.
- Marilyn (10/5): Amazing Place - We have an amazing experience staying in Casa de Canilhas. The owner is very accommodating. I highly recommend this place. Have a stunning view of the Douro Valley River.
- Sue (10/5): - Beautiful views, excellent breakfast
- Laurie (6/5): - Staff in morning particularly Sandra was great
- Marcia (10/5): - The view from our balcony was breathtaking. Very nice and well-appointed accommodations. Very happy we stayed here.
- Sara (10/5): - Very beautiful
- Cynthia (10/5): - Our host was wonderful. A breakfast basket was delivered to our room daily - filled to the brim with our custom meal. Fresh squeezed Orange juice, fresh orange slices, eggs, coffee, etc. brilliant.
The view was magical - the Douro vineyards and river unfolded before us.
We loved our room, can’t wait to return.
- Magda (10/5): Duoro Valley beautiful memories - This hotel was the highlight of our trip. The hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas. We would be very happy to return to this hotel.
- Janice (10/5): - Beautiful location surrounded by vineyards. Great view of the lake and countryside..
- Kathleen (10/5): - Fantastic location, amazing views. Delightful home with lovely furniture. Fabulous made to order breakfast.
- David (10/5): - Unparalleled serenity high atop a hillside overlooking the Duoro Valley.
- Rachelle (10/5): - We absolutely loved Casa de Canilhas. I cant imagine a better place to stay in Douro. The breakfast was fantastic, made to order with many options. The view is unbeatable and the rooms are perfect. We felt like we were visiting family in Portugal.
- ALEXANDER (10/5): Clean, quiet with excellent views. - This is a very clean small hotel. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Breakfast is very good, generous. We were able to eat outside and enjoyed the beautiful views. The hotel is located near Misao Frio. There's not a lot of tourism in this area which we appreciated. It made for a very quiet stay. The roads and alleys nearby offer opportunities to walk/excercise while enjoying the scenic views. A local grocery (20 minute walk) offers all you may need. The local restaurants and cafes (also walking distance ) are excellent.
Traveling there: We travelled by train and arranged for a taxi to bring us to/from the hotel (10 Euros per trip). It may be advantageous to have your own car if you want to travel around and visit wineries.
- Ruth (10/5): - Quirky but great. Amazing base for exploring the local area. The views are outstanding as well. This hotel is on my list of best hotels to stay in Europe!
- Dean (10/5): Spectacular view! - Absolutely LOVED this place! The room was clean and comfortable, the breakfast was great and the view from our patio balcony was out of this world. I wish we had left an extra day for hanging out by the pool or just sitting on the balcony, absorbing the fresh air and spectacular scenery with glass of wine in hand(which we did for both evenings we were there). It's one of those special places that you don't want to leave.
- Scott (10/5): - View was great. The town was close by and fun
- David (10/5): - Best ever view of the Douro valley. Accommodations were superb. Only two problems. No fridge in the room and they do not accept credit cards. Would have purchased a case of wine but only accepted cash. Otherwise a great place to stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great customer service - Fantastic customer service.
Stunning location and super clean and comfortable.
- Russell (10/5): Peaceful retreat - The location is amazing with spectacular views down the river. So peaceful and quiet. The room was very clean and the attention to detail was great. Breakfast was served in the room and was a real treat. Service was friendly. A couple of minor things that it is worth knowing about if you visit. Hotels.com still say they take credit cards but they do not. Parking is off street. It's safe and plenty of it but it is not on site and a short walk up a hill. Don't let it put you off - great place to stay!
- Stephanie (8/5): Beautiful place, felt unwelcomed though - Great room and fantastic breakfast. The grounds are beautiful. The only downside was the fact that it is a “family house” (their term) and it didn’t feel like guests were very welcomed. The very nice sitting room with a fireplace is roped off and you must ask to go in. We went out to sit on the balcony and were yelled at by a woman saying “This is my area!”. I think the owners need to decide if they want a private house or a hotel…
- Maria (10/5): Wonderful Stay @ Casa de Canilhas - Absolutely beautiful. Although I was surprised they don't take credit card payment.
- Richard Kevin (10/5): - Lovely historic setting, great food, super skilled staff who made us feel welcome & comfortable… top notch!,
- Patricia J. (10/5): - Beautiful accommodations. Stunning view. Breakfast could be available earlier. Would love to have met the owners for a more personal feel. Staff was courteous.
- Mark (10/5): - Could not imagine a better view of the Douro - from our room. Some of the best Portuguese food of our trip had in the nearby town Mesao Frio.
- Dr. Patricia J (10/5): cant beat the location or views - My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights upon arrival in Portugal. This hotel is incredible. It is perched on the top of vineyards which dot the hills coming up from the Duero river. The the views are unbelievable. We cannot imagine a better way is better way to spend our 1st 2 days in Portugal.
- Paul (8/5): Charming villa in beautiful location - The hotel is situated in a spectacular spot with breathtaking views of the Douro Valley. Internally the property is quirky and has it’s own style with the family’s footprint evident throughout. It’s definitely worth a stay, with the added benefit of friendly staff. Two points to note, the hotel only accepts cash, nearest ATM about 20 minutes drive, and there isn’t, a Restaurent attached, although you can order from a limited room service menu until about about 7.30 p.m. But worth the effort to visit.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We had a very spacious room on the main floor overlooking the Douro River. The view from our room and terrace was breathtaking. Breakfast was excellent and parking on the street above the Casa very safe and easy. It is a 15 minute walk to Mesão Frio where there were a few decent restaurants. We stayed for 2 nights and hook the train from Rede to Pinhão where they have boat tours and the Symington Estates winery. The place itself feels like a small castle. Staff made a fire for us, put on background music. All round great experience.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Jaw-dropping view, nice comfortable rooms with gorgeous views of the Douro river from room and balcony, good selection of breakfast- hot pancakes, scrambled eggs, cereals, fruits, meats, cakes, cheese and bread Andy friendly hosts. Highly recommend when in Douro valley. Our family of four, stayed Dec 29th in 2 rooms.
- Elaine (10/5): Duro Valley gem - A gorgeous view of the Duro Valley and a beautiful hotel. Staff were great. A very cozy antique filled place to unwind after checking out wineries.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Awesome experience! I recommand definitely ! Thank you !!!!
- Pat (10/5): - We got there early and left our luggage. The staff graciously put the luggage in our room while we were out exploring. Our.room was spotless.
- Pat (10/5): - Beautiful view. Main house was beautiful and our room was very nice.
- Kamal (10/5): - Outstanding service and location . Would have given it a 10 if not for the slow drain in the sink and tub.
- Sharlene (10/5): - The amazing view from our balcony was second to none! Very friendly and accommodating staff. I would highly recommend the property.
- Kathy (10/5): - Beautiful hotel with great charm. Very clean and friendly. The views are outstanding. Within walking distance of the little town of Mesao Frio.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Amazing place and even better view!!!!! They serve breakfast every morning and have a pool to swim at during the day! The only thing I would suggest, is for the staff to offer water / snacks to people who are sitting at the pool during the day. Would definitely recommend staying here!
- Lynn (10/5): Go for the view; enjoy the complete package! - The view alone - high above the Duoro River - was worth the visit. But the ample breakfast, delightful grounds with pool, warm hospitality and room with balcony were also first rate. And the value was terrific. You do need a car, though, and the courage to drive narrow local roads to Regua (multiple good restaurants) and the local wineries. Charming local restaurant within walking distance.
- CHRISTINA YUMEI (10/5): - 床太軟
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We chose (by mistake ) a room without a direct view of the valley which was too bad .The Tv reception was not good /the main breakfast area and living was very cosy and comfortable -a real home .Nice linens We had to leave a day early and Expedia was excellent in sorting things out for us with the casa -I was VERY impressed
- Nancy (10/5): Spectacular - We would rate this as one of the most spectacular place we’ve ever stayed. The view from our balcony towards the Douro River Valley was stunning. We hope someday to return.
- Verified traveler (10/5): From Montreal - Enjoyed our stay very much, nice large room with a beautiful view .Great breakfast !
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This property was excellent! The view from there were just awe inspiring and service could not be faulted. The property was well taken care of and had nice touches. The breakfast provided was perfect with a great variety and quality. Wish we had stayed longer and will be sure to return in the future. Will highly recommended! Obrigada!
- jean (10/5): - Beautiful auberge with outstanding view. Quality furniture, very peaceful, beautiful pool, great breakfast. A bit far from main village and DO NOT accept credit card but would return there without any doubt
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great little B&B in the Douro Valley - Casa de Canilhas was a great little B&B to stay at while spending a night in the Douro valley. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the views were amazing, the house is nicely furnished and was overall just a great place to relax and enjoy some port or a glass of wine while enjoying the views. It's up a bit of a windy/narrow road but if you're driving out this way it's not any different than the rest of the N-222. Plenty of parking on the street just above the house as well. The staff gave us a great recommendation for a little local restaurant for dinner in the nearby town that is about 15 min away by foot. Breakfast was quite delicious with plenty of variety as well. Our only regret was not staying longer. Would absolutely come stay again whenever we make it back to this area.
- Al (10/5): Spectacular - We were suppose to stay just one night however we were so satisfied with the accommodations, the spectacular view of the Douro Valley from the vantage point of our room and the friendliness of the staff that we made arrangements to stay a 2nd night. Outstanding is what comes to mind and please know that I have never given a 5 star for any other stay. Highly recommend it & we are planning to revisit in 2 years.
- M (10/5): - Lovely location and very friendly staff. Would highly recommend!
- BRIAN (10/5): Should be a World Famous view - Superb, a location to die for and the comfort and service to dream of.
- Susan (10/5): Loved our stay. Beautiful location and property - We stayed here for 2 nights in September 2017 and had booked the river and mountain view with the balcony. Absolutely breathtaking view from our room!!! Our room was very clean and charming, the breakfasts were tasty with lots of selection. The staff were friendly and helpful. Would definately recommend staying here.
- joao (8/5): good stay , but - always good as well , except not having free parking during low season and being the only guest at the house , charging 5 euros for overnigh parking seems to be not a good marketing strategy , inwould call it greed
- Verified traveler (10/5): The View of the Duoro River - Villa up above with the best view of the river!!
Friendly staff, cleanliness, cozy home and only cash.
Very well worth it.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Beautiful place with an amazing viee - I wish I stayed here longer. A fantastic location to explore the Douro Valley.
- Bob (10/5): Great view - Very comfortable and nicely decorated room. Balcony was amazing.
- John (10/5): Beautiful! - This hotel was amazing! Everything about our stay was perfect and I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Please note that if you are relying on Google maps for directions to the hotel they have it marked on the wrong side of the street. Casa de Canilhas is located on the side closest to the river.
- Robert (8/5): Beautiful view - The view was amazing and the staff very friendly...bed could have been more comfortable. Town was very small...noting opned up before 7:30.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent Property with a Tremendous View. - The property sits on cliff terrace. From the road you have a steep walk down to the main building.
We were not in the main building, but in a side bungalow type structure off the main building.
The views were incredible from all angles.
WIFI is poor in this building. You must go to the main building if you want internet.
- Verified traveler (10/5): BEAUTIFUL DREAM - Definitely the drive thru the mountains
was a breath taken, and automatic transmission , would be great, LOL
- Istvan (10/5): Simply wow!!! What a nice jewell! - Honestly one of the best experiences ever had. It was ao amazing!
2 comments: the bed was not comfortable at all, very noisy for every night moves, the training machines are actually in the open garage, so not ideal to use (not like on the pictures).
But all in all, the location, the building, the service were 5star+!!! :))
- Teresa (4/5): Smallest room we have ever stayed in. - The room was so small we had trouble getting our suitcases in, there we two coat hangers in the corner of the room, that was supposed to be the wardrobe no doubt. There was nowhere to put our clothes. The pillows were uncomfortable. The shower was so small the curtain stuck to you when showering and the water couldn't drain fast enough, so we had to have a quick shower or stand in cold water. No air conditioner, just a fan. The safe was a joke, we could walk around with it in our hands, it small and not fixed to anything.
- Martina (10/5): Perfection! - This hotel is incredible, a true paradise and the most perfect place to stay. The pool and views were unreal. Breakfast and service from the lovely staff was top notch.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Amazing view of the Douro river! - We had enjoyed just sitting outside our veranda than doing anything else. This hotel has an amazing view of the Douro vineyards and river. The pool was a great place to swim and soak in more views. We had a personal welcome postcard by Barbara Canilhas herself. We thought it was special. The staff were helpful in every way. The dining area was a long table and everyone shared the same table. We had a quiet company so at times it was awkward. overall, great small hotel!
- Nicholas (10/5): Douro - Stunning view of The Valley . Great for touring the Douro .
- Edward (10/5): Beautiful B&B - Beautiful setting, overlooking the Douro. The house interior was beautiful as well, with nice handcrafted wood furniture, doors and windows. Breakfast was good. There are a couple of restaurants just 1km away in town.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - What a lovely setting ..could have easily spent a few days here ..so relaxing and you feel taken care of .
- Svetlana (10/5): The view - We liked everything about this hotel. The stuff, the service, the cleanses, the room, the bedding, breakfast. The property is very well maintained. We would definitely stay there again on our next trip to Douro Valley
- Manju (10/5): Dream house on the Douro - Fabulous place. Great views, hosts and the kindest and gentlest staff that took care of the rooms, breakfast and us impeccably!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Really nice place. Would always go back. - It was a really nice place to stay and the view is amazing.
Nethertheless there was construction work at the house and they startetd to make very loud noise at 08.30 am. This was not really a pleasure. Better next time wait until noon, so most of the guests are out of the house.
- Christopher (10/5): Special Opportunity - One of the most spectacular views I have ever seen. The house is lovely and designed specifically to accommodate guests so that all have personal space & privacy. Outstanding attention to detail.
- A Canadian (4/5): Beautiful view - The room called "economic" room was the room that we have stayed. The room was extremely small and also has extremely small shower facility. It was very damp and uncomfortable. We regret to have that room. When we arrived, we were the only guest in the hotel and the receptionist made an offer to upgrade a better room with additional 10 euros(16% more) and regrettably we didn't take it. We might be have had a more comfortable experience if we took that offer. However we were allowed to stay the living room which was very nice view and comfortable room and we have enjoyed the room. The breakfast was excellent. We don't recommend the economic room to anyone but if anyone wishes to stay in the hotel we strongly encourage to stay in not-economic room.
- Flaneur (10/5): Beautiful guest house - We stayed for one night in mid-November. Charming guest house that is decorated with personal touches by the owner. The room was very clean. Breakfast was exceptional since there is a large table to eat with other guests (and greeted by the very nice owners in the morning), with excellent food options, all overseeing a balcony that has views to the vineyards and river below. We had easy parking nearby. Overall, highly recommended hotel.
- Sherrie (10/5): Restful - Spent a day recuperating. Very restful and two hot baths helped.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely escape to the Douro - Perfectly placed to start an exploration of the Douro Valley .
Beautifully situated above the valley . Lovely rooms, clean and comfortable.
Very nice staff .
Good breakfast. Good internet.
A car a must.
Evening dining a bit limited. A walk into town, but the wines are excellent .
- Nigel (2/5): Would not stay here again - Pretentious Guesthouse
Not good value for money unless you are happy to pay say 70 euros for the spectacular view.
DO NOT except credit cards, cash only!! No mention of this on website
Average breakfast, served on patio tables outside, so be prepared if chilly
No minibar in room
No paper hand tissues in bathroom
No onsite parking. Steep road and driveway, so not suitable for elderly persons
No restaurant, so eating out is a drive into the village
Over~rated
- Ruth (10/5): Sublime - If you don't mind driving up some twisty turning roads to get there, it's wonderful! The views are breathtaking!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Very nice hotel with amazing view - The smallest room is not in the high level that the hotel represent, very nice hotel, excellent vie, an excellent team.
- Viktor (10/5): Oh the View! - Great simple Hotel with an awesome view of the Douro valley! Extremely friendly staff. Nice simple breakfast.
- Kathleen (10/5): - A wonderful place to relax and unwind.
- Patrice (10/5): - Very good and beautifull
