Guest Reviews

- Sandra (10/5): This is an older but beautiful Ryokan in a stunning location. - We loved staying in this traditional Ryokan in peaceful mountain village away from the crowds, set in a beautiful old temple ground. The meals were outstanding, enjoyed in our own private dining room, with warm and attentive service that made our stay truly special.
- Sarah (9/5): -

- Carolyn (9/5): Excellent. Would definitely recommend - Beautiful place, fantastic food and very hospitable staff
- Louise (8/5): -
- Jonathan (9/5): - Authentic Japanese experience with outstanding service Despite appreciating the authentic futon experience, they were a little hard for us

- Antony (10/5): Magnificent stay in an old temple in beautiful grounds, kind staff with vegetarian-friendly option - This is a fabulous old temple building with traditional rooms, kind, considerate hosts, beautifully prepared food that catered for vegetarians for 3 days in beautiful surroundings. Half board is not cheap but we don’t begrudge a penny. Such lovely people. If you want comfy beds, and English speakers then look elsewhere.
- Emanuele (8/5): -
- Adam (8/5): - Beautiful area. Very kind staff. Tasty meals.
- Simon (10/5): A trip to remember beyond all expectations. - It was a truly Japanese cultural experience at the most beautiful location.
- Siew (7/5): Good - Central location to sites of visit. Heating is weak. Room is comfortable but bath and toilet area is cold.
- Colin (8/5): Very good -
- Etienne (9/5): Superb - Very nice people
Superb main building
Great dinner Old rooms located in a side building
- James (6/5): - Property is dated. Onsen was not pleasant. There are two onsens. The older one has a pebble bottom that was terrible to walk on.
- David (8/5): Historical ryokan in temple grounds with beautiful gardens and excellent food. - Heritage building in an incredible temple garden setting unlike any Ryokan I have stayed at. Definitely a unique place with excellent food and a great bath house with Cedar tub. The modem wing feels a bit vast and had moments of “The Shining” 😆
It’s expensive to stay here and lacks the luxurious feeling that this kind of price usually offers you.
- Peter (9/5): Superb -
- Christopher (10/5): - Excellent place to stay! Great views and a true traditional Japanese Ryokan. The garden is beautiful and the staff is super friendly. The building is quite old and full of history which adds to the charm. Would stay again.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- GOH SOON (6/5): - I booked 3 rooms this time. One of the rooms was dirty, toilet smells very bad, and a tea cup still contain residual tea, probably from previous guests.
Other than that, the location was great to explore around Yoshinoyama.
- Marie (10/5): - Beautiful tempel garden, there's an outside onsen with view on the mountains, the staff is very friendly
- Verified traveler (6/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very helpful friendly service. Food was excellent and not excessive in abundance as at some Royokan. Rooms were wonderful.
- 1. timeinJapan (8/5): Authentic Japanese experience - We wanted to stay in a Ryokan with a Japanese dinner & hot spring. There were many top moments during our stay: our shoe storage space had our name on it, our private dining room was also marked with our name, hot spring was located on a spa terasse and I had the most beautiful view to the sunset while lying in the hot spring alone. We were very well taken care of. A very simple authentic Japanese experience, which will linger on in our minds for a long time. The food was home-cooked, something I assume the families would eat at home. One night stay was just good, as then we could experience all this, including wearing the yukatas and slipperd, which is also an experience.
- Mirna (10/5): An unforgettable Japanese experience! - If you're looking for an authentic, traditional experience, you need to stay here. The ryokan is nestled in a forested mountaintop surrounded by traditional Japanese gardens and beautiful temples. The ryokan itself is a traditional Japanese inn with hot spring baths, tatami matted floors and extravagant Japanese meals served in your own private dining room. Our room was large with a private bath overlooking a Buddhist temple. I found it uncomfortable to sleep on the floor on futon mats, but my husband and 9 year-old daughter were quite comfortable. I ended up using extra mats that were stored in our closet.
Overall, we have an unforgettable experience. Most of it was due to our lovely hostess, always dressed in beautiful kimonos and so very sweet. She made us feel like family. She enjoyed preparing extravagant meals for us. The food was very traditional. It included egg omelettes, sushi, a wide variety of fish, rice, soups, salads and other foods that were foreign to us, but we tasted everything even if it looked strange. I'd definitely stay here again.
- Jean Philippe (8/5): amazing service but oldish hotel - Chikurinin is a nice genuine Ryokan. We enjoyed a great service during our stay and the food was really good. The building is nevertheless oldish with an eighties look, it really needs to be refurbished.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Experience Japan in this Ryokan in Yoshino-yama - This is a great ryokan in the heart of Yoshino-yama...a mountain village for those who like to explore culture, temples, and shrines admist nature. The food is delicious.
- Phillip (6/5): Out of the Way - Very Nice (Unique) Ryokan - Beautiful, traditional style Japanese ryokan that lives up to its description. Former Buddhist temple with extensive, lush grounds. Westerners will be welcomed warmly and a tiny bit of English is spoken by various workers but be ready to just go with the whole ryokan experience (tatami floors and futon mats, no shoes worn in hotel, Japanese fare for breakfast served by a very professional and kind female server). I think there are some western style rooms but they were not available for my stay.
This was the only hotel available anywhere near Kyoto for sakura (cherry blossom festival). 1.5 hours away, up a steep hill with twisting roads and trains don't run after about 20:00 (8 o'clock p.m.). There was a huge national park nearby and my only regret is that I didn't just give up on sakura (which was underwhelming) and go hiking in the park - which is what most of the people who stay at this place are there to do. Nature everywhere - gorgeous and relaxing.
