Guest Reviews
- Mache (10/5): An unforgettable stay with amazing hosts in the perfect surf setting. - The atmosphere was incredible—relaxed, welcoming, and perfectly suited for a coastal getaway. Nic and Marina went above and beyond to make us feel at home, and Nic’s surf knowledge added a really special touch. The place itself is comfortable, well-kept, and has everything you need for a great stay. N/A
- Ngcebo (7/5): - If you are a group of carefree, free-spirited 20-something year old surfers or adventure seekers, you will like it this place. Luckily, I was alone in the whole house that weekend, so it was okay and very peaceful. Otherwise, if you are not in the above-mentioned age group, book their bungalows instead. They looked very decent. I didn't go inside them as I had booked a room inside the main house.
- Maria (10/5): The place to recommend in the near future visit. - Professionalism of the staff, the cleaness and the comfort of the place. Everything in the building was perfect.
- Masekabi (10/5): Peaceful hidden gem 🌊 - Great place to escape the rat race reality.
The property has good energy and really amazing people.
Hope to stay longer next time. It’s a secluded area with no access to e-hailing services like uber. Public transport is not close by. It would be best to drive there if you plan on sightseeing.
- Jarred (10/5): - We loved the chilled decor and open space in the garden; it felt very relaxing. The proximity to the beach was also super convenient When we booked, we didn't read the details correctly and missed that the room we booked was a room in the house with shared amenities and kitchen. Double-check before you do. We came to celebrate our anniversary and found it uncomfortable sharing space with people, but that is our own doing. We could find no fault with the facility and services offered.
- Jc (10/5): - Beautiful bungalow ,all the facilities you need ,gracious hosts ,beach access what more can you ask for . 10/10

This place is an absolute gem! Nestled by the sea, it offers a chance to reconnect with nature and leave behind the hustle of daily life. There’s a grounding energy here, a reminder of life’s simple joys and the beauty of the natural world. We stayed in the sea-facing cottage, which was perfectly equipped and incredibly comfortable. It’s the kind of place where you can unwind, free from any pretenses—just pure relaxation.
One unique feature: the cottage has only an outdoor shower. At first, I was a little hesitant, but by the end of our stay, it was what I missed most! There’s nothing quite like a warm shower in the open air, with the gentle seaside breeze drifting by—pure bliss.
Some might be concerned about local geckos, but we found them to be a delightful part of the experience. One or two make an appearance, keeping the odd mosquito at bay. It’s all part of the natural balance here, a small reminder that nature isn’t something to fear but to appreciate.
You’re truly paying for the experience and the unbeatable location. Everything you need is right here, and Woolies Dash even delivers if you want added convenience. There’s no need to go anywhere else—dolphin sightings, fishing, and beachcombing are just a few steps away. October weather was comfortable, and we didn’t miss having aircon; the sea breeze kept things pleasant.
If you’re looking for luxury amenities like air conditioning, TVs, and room service, a high-rise hotel may be a better fit. But if you want to destress and enjoy an authentic seaside retreat, this is the place to be. It’s serene, laid-back, and perfect for those who prefer a peaceful escape. October was delightfully quiet, but for those wanting extra solitude, it’s worth checking availability during busier months like December when campers and beach house guests might also be around.
- Adams (10/5): Exceptional -
- Zandile (1/5): Very very very bad - Nothing at the place is old and dilapidated and it is disguised and rustic. The property is not as advertised and we did not get what we booked for had to pay extra just to get separate rooms even though we did state that we wanted 2 bedrooms when we were booking.
- Andile (10/5): It was relaxing. - I loved the proximity to the ocean. To be greeted by the sound of waves crashing in the morning was amazing.
- Nair (9/5): Superb - I made an error in booking, host was very friendly and accommodating, my bungalow was like a little piece of heaven, very warm and cosy, would definitely go back when I'm in the area. The only thing I was missing was a TV.
- Mahlangu (7/5): Good - The view is very nice
- Marcia (9/5): Really perfect location. The hosts Nick & Mari were very responsive and helpful and also allowed on - Really perfect location. I felt safe even though I was travelling alone. Perfectly located, right on the beach.

- Hannah (10/5): Surfing in the morning, eating, playing cards, napping, reading - repeat! - Epic location, everything you need to have a lovely restful holiday! We saw so many whales and different kinds of birds. A very chilled out and good vibe. N/a
- Thembeka (10/5): Superb stay - The location of the place, very close to the beach. The view from the tree. The WIFI signal was very fast. Nothing
- Johannes (10/5): Location Location Location & Amazing Hosts! - If I could rate a 6 out of 5 I would have!!!
The location is excellent, a few meters from the beach. The hosts are AMAZING in every way. The accommodation itself was top notch, very comfortable bed, clean beach hut, with everything and more one might need.
Will 100% visit again, in fact already planning our next trip out there! n/a
- Vuyo (9/5): Superb - Excess to the beach The bed is was bot comfortable, they need new beds
- Jonas (9/5): Superb -
- George (8/5): Great place to stay, to get away from the hustle and bustle - Made our own breakfast as we did not stay in the main surf house, we stayed in the self catering unit. Self caterong unit to have Better braai utensils, especially proper braai tongs and wire brush to clean the grids are required as well as a lighter. Can maybe install a fan in the lower area of the bungalow.
- Cassim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lea (10/5): Perfect place to unwind - Beautiful beachhouse with amazing sunrises. Lovely place! Everything was perfect.
- Philip (10/5): Exceptional -
- Manci (7/5): Good -
- Maresa (10/5): Exceptional - Nick and Marina are great Hosts and created a dream getaway for travellers, surfers and Families with their surfhouse. It is located directly at the beach, offers plenty of community space such us a huge terasse and yoga Deck, a tree deck, huge Garden. I Liked the Swing and the hammock.. and their pets: two dogs and three cats are also around. WiFi is Very good. My Favorite: braai initiated by Nick and Marina together with all the Other guests.
- Caroline (10/5): Perfect three night beach chill - Fantastic location right on the beach. Friendly, full of advice and really hospitable management team - loved going to the local surf competition!
- Phillip (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ngobese (1/5): Bad -
- Nadine (9/5): very enjoyable - Just loved the view.. It was very comfortable and relaxing. Location was good. People friendly nothing to complain about.
- Draveena (9/5): amazing holiday destination - amazing location....few metres from the beach they could cater for gas during load shedding
- Dickie (1/5): Disappointed - Location only The entire accommodation we did not check in lost our money
Dirty dogs running inside the room we were going to get old tatty bed etc
- Baloyi (2/5): Traumatic! - Hosts were friendly. Staff was friendly. The place is literally a 1min walk from the beach. This is all there is to like about the place. Parking is limited I can only imagine how bad it gets when it's peak time. We were aware that it is a "rustic" accomodation and that they had dogs and cats on the property so were prepared for that. What we didn't anticipate was for heavily stained coaches, heavily stained curtains, stained bedding/sheets, 1ply tissue paper (not even the cheapest places I've ever stayed in use 1ply tissue paper), no air-conditioning even in a bungalow that is poorly insulated from heat and cold, no TV or radio (I understand that it is a retreat type place but surely it can be left to the guests weather they want to switch on a TV or not), low toilet water pressure so need to flush a few times which wastes water, tinny bathroom which you will hit your head against the wall if you try to wash your face in the basin, no UPS for the wifi which I would think is a necessity in an area prone to flooding. Basically feels like the word rustic is used to describe this property as a way to skimp on everything from amenities to basic maintenance. When we arrived the dogs ran up to us so wouldn't suggest this place for someone who is scared of dogs. While we were braaing outside one of the dogs suddenly ran up to us which we mistook as an attempted attack. In the morning while it was dark outside we opened the front door to go out for some fresh air and their cat forced itself inside uninvited. This was a traumatic experience for myself and my wife so we ended up staying there for only 1 night of the 4 nights we had booked and paid for in full, repacked our bags and had to pay for another accomodation for the other 3 nights.
- Alison (4/5): Not a good option for families if the weather is bad. - The proximity to the beach was great. Managers were very friendly and attentive in their communication building up to the stay. They also checked in on us during very heavy rains which was nice. We were informed prior to our arrival that the bungalow was rustic so we were prepared for that, but there seems to be a very relaxed approach to property maintenance at the accommodation. The pillows and headboard on the bed got drenched because the closed windows behind the bed were leaking. The bathroom cabinet door doesn't ever close and hits you in the face while using the basin. The light in the bathroom doesn't seem to work (I asked for lightbulb to be changed but this didn't make a difference). We informed the property manager and they apologized and gave us a voucher for 10% off our next stay but I imagine this has been brought to their attention before and it hasn't been addressed (the bathroom cabinet is held together with string).
- Samuel (10/5): Great!!! And wonderful!!! - Was super relaxing and the atmosphere was fabulous. The location is amazing and can walk from the place onto the beach. A definite must visit. Also great for big families. Loved it!
- Tani (10/5): Feels and looks like heaven… - This place is like heaven! Location is amazing, very beautiful decorated and cozy, super clean and well stocked kitchen. The garden is huge with two lovely dogs and cats you can cuddle and a direct pathway to the beach. I didn’t do much activities sound because the place was just so gorgeous and perfect to spend time at the local beach or sind the house.
Staff is super friendly and obliging!
Additionally, Nick is a really nice, competent surf instructor - I can only highly recommend to stay at Umzumbe Surf House.
- Diphoko (10/5): My stay was really amazing. My spouse and I had an amazing relaxation time. - The ocean N/A
- Dean (9/5): Superb -
- Ramdin (10/5): Lovely property by the beach. Great views. Peaceful environment. Tiny (lady who helps to clean the property) , is so fri - Large property , close to the beach. Volleyball , surfing and yoga available. Swing on spacious deck with a large outdoor table for entertaining. A treehouse with spectacular views. No aircon available for the upstairs room in the bungalow . Gets very hot and stuffy in the evenings.
No generators/inverters or UPS when loadshedding hits so there is no cellphone reception to use the phone in case of emergencies.
Toilet pressure is poor so you need to flush quite a few times which leads to water wastage even if it is borehole water.
Limited parking in the front of the property, overflow parks on the grass but the ground slopes down then up which is difficult for smaller cars to get through and ends up damaging the front bumper.
- Baloi (6/5): Pleasant - They stole our food(cheese) in the fridge but there was no other people we were sharing the house with and the sheets had stains
- Bailey (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lindi (8/5): Value for money with beautiful scenic views - Loved that the property was a gate-opening away from the beach
The bungalow is well-equipped for daily living
I was startled at first by the outside shower but thoroughly enjoyed after initial use
Loved the view of the sea from the bedroom
Staff was friendly No Rooibos Teabags available
- Shams (9/5): Superb - Wooden tree house feel, Location, stunning property overall , beach access, outdoor shower in banana cottage, wifi Some water problem on first day, flush didn't work in banana cottage.
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jenny (6/5): The setting is lovely, hosts are good but the shower leaks, bedding is worn and generally needs a good clean. Had to was - It’s right on the beach It needs some maintenance and tlc
- Stuart (10/5): needed a place to stay to get out of town for a few nights to kick back and chill. Umzumbe surf house was the purfect pl - basic, neat and tidy
- Naidoo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Catherine (10/5): Absolutely loved the time there and plan to return soon. So comfortable - everything you need. - I was with my granddaughter and it was just amazing. The staff are super friendly. The whole environment is amazing and I can't wait to book my next holiday. I love the tree deck and watching the whales and dolphins. There was nothing to dislike whatsoever.
- Phumelele (8/5): Such a lovely peaceful stay. Good vibes only! -
- Kathrin (10/5): A spot you never want to leave again! - Perfect spot for a little retreat! With direct access to a beautiful beach, a super relaxed atmosphere, breathtaking property (we stayed at the garden cottage), proximity to smaller town, some seafood & wine there was nothing else we could have wished for!! Although surfing is not for us we had one of the most amazing holidays!
