- Jami (8/5): - Fantastic place! Great room super comfy bed. Quiet. The door knob to the balcony was loose and falling off. And the water control to the bathtub/shower didn’t work. Couldn’t turn the water on or off because it was so loose. Tightened it myself to make it barely work for the night. Other wise excellent stay. Front staff was very receptive of hearing the issue upon checkout. Will stay again

Our waiter for dinner(Robert) was amazing and made sure everything was absolutely perfect. We will definitely be returning!

- Verified traveler (6/5): - We have stayed here many times. The reservation Made on Expedia was not in the Bavarian Inn system when we checked in! Strange as I phoned them 4 times regarding this res that I made back in October. I wanted to be sure we had a top floor, river view corner room. We were able to get this room as it turned out. The room did not have heat in the large bathroom-tiled and Was very, very cold. There is a wall unit In the bathroom but when maintenance came to look at it they said that ‘this room’s unit does not work’. They knew it and kept the room in use. There is no night light in that large bathroom which meant keeping the light on and the door closed. So it was extremely cold in the morning until we were up and could then keep the door open for the room unit to heat it up....The TV is inside an outdated armoire positioned at the foot of the bed. It swallowed the sound and could not be seen from the sitting area Set up a good 10 feet away. Little things that should be addressed and fixed For a room charge of $298 per night including taxes. The Rathskeller restaurant is very nice and the food very good. The staff there is excellent.

- Amy (10/5): Great except for dinner reservation - Great weekend get away only issue was we made dinner reservations for Saturday initially asking for 7 pm and was told that 7:30 was better so we changed our time. We got there a little before 7:30 and was told it would be an additional half hour which we weren’t thrilled with but said ok. When that time was up the waiter came up and said it would be even longer and that the reservation should have not been taken in the first place. So 3 hrs later we ended up trying to find a place to have a nice dinner.

- kelly (6/5): Charming, but. . . - It's a charming, historic and well-located property between the banks of the Potomac River and Shepherd University. It is just a few blocks away from the charming main street. It is also very convenient to Antietam National Battlefield, just 8 minutes away. The hotel itself strikes me as a solid 3 star - plenty of room and comfortable beds, but the furniture was very dated, even noticeably worn. The restaurants were satisfactory, but won't be competing for a Michelin Star anytime soon (the Ratskeller bar is charming). WiFi wasn't very good - slow and hard to access at time on the property (and throughout the community of Shepherdstown). Stay here if you must, but you're likely to find better value elsewhere - struck me as a little expensive.

- Tim (4/5): - The room viewed online for the one I booked was not the same room. This room was on the lowest floor of the Chimere (I think that’s how you spell it). There was no elevator or even key card entry point for the building. Anyone can walk up and be at your door. The hallway for the room was musty and smelled like mildew. When I entered the room the smell hit me again but stronger. The wall paper was coming off the walls at points. There were cobwebs in some corners and on most of the lights. The walls were scratched and had multiple holes in them. The baseboards in the bathroom were falling down. I called the first night to ask for a new room but the woman very shortly said it was full. I asked to speak to a manager and she said there would be one the following morning. When I went in the morning I was told she wouldn’t be in until Monday, which did not help since I was checking out Sunday. Overall the restaurant and pool were nice but everything else was just gross. I’ve never spend this much money on a “luxury” hotel with such dirty and outdated rooms.
- Shantal (2/5): Shockingly Awful - It's a tragedy that this unique property is presently under such dismal management. We chose a luxury balcony Riverview suite. Rate was $240 per night. It was a hot September day, 2nd floor room had a beautiful view but the balcony railing separated from the building and wobbly! Scary! The room was nice but had a BRICK TOP style mattress and cooled by awas TINY, ANCIENT unit that was too small for that size room to start with, but worse yet was reduced to about 30 % efficiency around 2am. We had a high of 93 degrees that day and let me tell you we roasted like rotisserie chickens the rest of the night. I reported both issues to the front desk and asked for late check out of 1nor 2 pm because of the inconvenience and poor rest and was immediately told NO! I calmly asked why and was told the the entire place was booked for the next day and when I checked on this I determined this was a blatant lie. I was later begrudgingly granted a 1:30pm checkout by General Manager who never even came to speak to me in person though she was on property. I ket other guests with major maintenance and customer service complaints from the previous day too! I am a freenlance travel writer for over 20 years and have never experienced such hideous customer care. They are in the hospitality business and haven't the faintest clue what the definition of hospitality is. Their motto seems to be "just pay your money and get out". Consider yourself warned.

Also, the clientele was an unusual mix of lower class college kids seeking an IG selfie and pretentious elites complaining about the kids. Best place to go was actually the Charlestown casino. Ha!

They were more than accommodating and remarkably flexible in a way that is not common among other similar resorts. And I can't say enough about the exquisite views, excellent food, and magnificent proprietary beer. Two big thumbs up!
- Jdunn47 (8/5): - Beautiful setting, views, garden. Walk to C and O towpath for walk/hike. Very close to town and Shepardstown Very nice pool. Comfortable room with coffee maker. Lots of outdoor seating to eat or relax. Food ranged from very good to odd (appetizer billed as burrata with crab came with crab mixed with a few thin slices of mozzarella). Restaurant service ranged from excellent to less than attentive. ( had trouble getting server attention at bar and outside once. Reception service was excellent. Housekeeping ranged from excellent to less than attentive (vacuum and cleaning materials left in the room, sleep sofa not put back together). Overall a very good experience- we would return.

Expensive but room was beautiful, clean, and super comfortable, views were amazing, and the pool was fantastic. Front desk staff were not exactly friendly (we were biking-maybe I didn't look like I had $ to stay here though I had reservations) and when asked for conditioner never did get any though they said they would have some sent to room. Breakfast not included. Dinner was very good.
- hoda (8/5): A room with a view - We were at Shepherdstown for the Theater festival. We enjoyed the fantastic view, the infinity swimming pool and the closeness to the University and the C&O canal. The Hotel is prestigious and classy. I would recommend the following improvements: renovation of rooms and bathroom. Better room service, improve the every day cleaning, and provide good quality shampoo and conditioner. Also the food quality does not reflect the importance of the Hotel.

Our only complaint is that the hotel's wi-fi service was unreliable; devices running on the newest iOS could not maintain a connection; the wi-fi was constantly disconnecting then re-connecting in an endless cycle that prevented us from using the network. We had to resort to cellular data.

- Darlene (8/5): - We loved the Bavarian Inn. It was very charming. We lived in Germany for five years while in the Air Force. So we were very happy to see the German style buildings. We got a great deal through Expedia. I went to the hotel website and realized they had some expensive rooms with fireplaces and jacuzzis overlooking the Potomac but we were content with a regular room Our room was very nice. The bed was very comfortable with very nice comfortable linens. The bathroom was clean and arranged nicely. It had another sink outside of the bathroom. We had a sofa and a nice TV. Which was important to my husband for March Madness. There was a balcony and we actually did have a view of the Potomac!!! It was really quiet. The grounds were pretty. The best part was the Bavarian restaurant. If you like Bavarian food you have to go there. We were expecting really high prices at the restaurant but they were good. It is not all German food. I also had a crab cake that was so delicious!! We found a great walking path nearby I would definitely recommend this charming place

I had a problem with my room’s tv and the front desk employee came right over and spent a few minutes solving the problem. She was very patient and personable. The setting is lovely and Shepherdstown (my hometown) is delightful.

- Carlyle (10/5): Ahhh, the view! - The view overlooking the Potomac River is amazing! Despite a chill in the air, we were perfectly content sitting on our balcony sipping wine and taking it all in. If you're looking for a 4-star location, the inn is a perfect spot for a romantic weekend or family getaway. It was a very pleasant surprise to find the staff, especially at the front desk, just as amazing as the view. The only negative was the very hard water, which made it impossible to feel as though I'd washed all the soap off at the sink or in the shower. Nevertheless, we look forward to returning in warmer weather.

The weather didn’t cooperate, but we still really enjoyed ourselves. Shepherdstown is a lovely, dog friendly town, with lots af interesting shops and friendly people.

The staff are amazing and so friendly, they really made our stay so much more enjoyable so shout out to Mya, Receptionist and Tré & Chelsea who were at the Rathskellar pub! We stayed in the Augsburg Chalet, the rooms are purposefully vintage-styled and so quaint; we had a bottle of champagne awaiting us in the room. There was a small balcony that overlooked a surprisingly pleasant & peaceful view of the river. The shower pressure was excellent, however the bathtub was rather small. There are shower amenities provided, dress robes, iron & board and a hairdryer in the room. There is a mini-fridge but no microwave. The TV could use an update. We had a king-sized bed, very comfortable. We dined in the Potomac fine dining room and the food was absolutely divine!! I would definitely recommend going here for that peaceful getaway we all need!

- Charles (10/5): Perfect weekend escape - Although the rooms are just a little dated, this was a lovely stay for a weekend getaway and escape from Washington, D.C. The restaurants, one casual and one formal offer wonderful atmosphere and cuisine. If staying in a chalet room (balcony, fireplace, soaking jacuzzi tub) be sure to ask for a chalet farther from the bridge as the road noise can be a bit excessive. The town of Shepherdstown is charming with great restaurants and small shops where the locals know the true meaning of hospitality. Everything about this experience left us leaving relaxed, energized and wanting to recommend to our friends.

- Carm (10/5): - I really enjoyed my stay at Bavarian inn. I especially loved the view I had from my balcony. (I specifically picked Bavarian inn for the view of the Potomac river.). It delivered 100% of my expectations. The food was delicious. My husband and I enjoyed their dinner and breakfast. I came home raving about the Jail Island Salmon.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Ideallic getaway. Hotel is located overlooking the Potomac River and feels like a European destination. Everything from checkin to room to facilities are 5 star. It is newly renovated so is modern with an old world charm. Stayed in the Royal Suite which is worth the higher price. Sunday brunch was beautifully presented and everything was drlicious. Will definitely return.

- Grant (10/5): Lovely stay - Overall our stay at the Bavarian Inn was great. Our room was very comfortable. We ate dinner and breakfast at their restaurant and the food was amazing along with a wonderful atmosphere. All the staff we encountered were extremely friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend the Bavarian Inn to anyone planning a trip to the area.

However, the property itself could use a little TLC, i.e. fresh carpet and new paint in the hallways. Our shower had lukewarm water at best during our stay.

It was located within 30 minutes of all the activities and places we visited. Breakfast was wonderful. We didn't care for the dinner of German cuisine, but the serving staff was phenomenal! It was a great weekend overall.

- David (4/5): - I was really excited to surprise my wife with a night away in Shepherdstown and a stay at the Bavarian Inn and I can say our least favorite part of are trip was the hotel. the room wasn't very clean, bathroom door wouldn't shut, couldn't use the balcony because it was infested with pests as if it hadn't been used in months and the treadmill didn't work in the gym. We wont be staying again..

- J. Linda (10/5): - Fantastic. Never been before. Location beautiful. Food delicious. Only problem as room service order was not what I ordered.
- Pam (4/5): - I liked the fine dinning, food and service. Did not like that the cleaning of the room was atrocious. Soap Wrappers left in tub, no vacuuming done, great big huge wrinkles in the bed. The countertops were not wiped off and coffee mugs were not replaced that had been used. Also, I was told we needed to request refrigerator and microwave so I did and neither were provided. Be aware of high taxes.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - While the common areas are nice, the room was outdated to the point of run down. We had a spiderweb in the window and the screen was broken in one of the windows. The pool was nice, but small and very crowded during an August weekend, so we couldn't really enjoy the nice common areas. This inn is not living up to the upscale and formal image they are trying to project.
- Suzanne (10/5): So romantic - Beautiful property in a great area. We had a wonderful romantic weekend. Our room had a whirlpool tub and an electric fire place and a balcony on the Potomac. We also loved the infinity pool.
- catbert (6/5): - Way too expensive for the mediocre facility. The desk staff was efficient, but not at all friendly or welcoming. The room was well used, window and door glass were dirty, and the tub grout was discolored. All in all, the beautiful vistas were not worth the premium price. The restaurant was a little pricey too, but the food was excellent, which made up for the price.
