Guest Reviews
- susanfV2621YJ (10/5): Charming Hotel - I stayed at the Hotel Gunter and it was lovely. Becky at the desk was very nice and helpful. The room was clean and cozy. If you're looking for a generic hotel experience then stick with a chain; if you want very affordable, unique, historic, quirky and something to remember, go to the Gunter. It was very quiet while I was there. Don't forget to check out the museum in the basement and experience relaxing on the front balconies, which are available to all visitors and offer views of downtown Frostburg. There are lots of nice decorative details still intact - keep in mind the hotel was built in 1897!
- Eva (10/5): - Clean comfortable room. Staff was amazing. Rooms are small, but quaint and cozy. The only thing it needed was a full length mirror in bedroom area. Lots of history here. We would stay again.
- Edward (8/5): - Love an old hotel
- Terry (10/5): Beautiful hotel - Great stay! Historic hotel with a lot of charm. The front desk lady was super friendly and very informative. The room was very clean, ac worked well, and the bed was super comfortable. If I'm in the area again, ill definitely stay!
- Robert (10/5): - Clean, well kept rooms in an interesting historical building. Friendly and attentive staff were very helpful.
- Dawn (2/5): - Hotel was locked up with no way in...not appreciated after a 9 hour drive in the rain at 1 in the morning.
- Melissa (4/5): - This was a total fiasco from the beginning. From not willing to help to front office staff being rude to not even having an ice machine except at the front desk. I get it’s a historic hotel but that should be your opportunity to shine -not dim
- Janet (10/5): - Historic hotel
- david (10/5): - Stayed at the Gunter on a bicycle
Trip..staff was outstanding and a room
For the bikes was a bonus. They gave great recommendations for dinner and breakfast. Great Job Gunter!
- Klaudia (10/5): - This is a very quaint historic hotel in a lovely town. Rooms are well equipped, nothing fancy but more than adequate. Big porches overlooking Main Street. Would stay again.
Breakfast across Main Street, book store, steakhouse a half mile away.
- Xiaoping (10/5): - Very good
- Gary (2/5): - Late arrival due to severe weather led to a nightmare. What kind of hotel has nobody on site after 5 PM. Finally into room after midnight. Room poor. AC very bad. Only bathroom was ok. NEVER AGAIN.
- Debra (10/5): - Great value for the price. Hotel built in 1897, lots of character. Would stay again.
- Scott (8/5): - The restaurants and other items advertised to be on property were all closed. The hotel is old and my floor had a big slope in it. Even though there were apartments in the building everything was quiet. Staff seemed to go home for dinner at 6. Only 1 restaurant close by was open. LG's was decent enough, but many others closed hours before or were closed on Monday.
- Jeffrey (8/5): - Convenient location, reasonably priced and clean.
- jane (8/5): - Clean room, friendly staff, convenient, walkable to downtown
Missing the toasted goat bar, speakeasy, and outdoor bar. Something needs to take over those places.
Needs some upgrades to hotel- new carpeting throughout the whole place and in the rooms.
- Carol (6/5): Historical Hotel - It’s an old historic hotel. The restaurant associated with it is closed. My room was small, certainly nothing fancy, other than a tv, no amenities. Interesting area to wander.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Charming, but awful check in. - Very cool historic hotel, comfortable and mostly clean. Check-in is abysmal, starting at 3pm, there is only a person at the front desk for an hour or two, which is crazy. Keys were supposed to be left in lock box, but weren’t. Had to call the owner to come let me in, who was very nice and apologetic, but was still an unnecessary step in my opinion when you could just staff the desk a little longer. The hotel is dated, but I found it charming, however the elevator was sketchy at best, to a point I thought i was going to get stuck in it, and actually did stop working at the end of my stay. I hope ownership can tighten this place up, because I’d love to visit again.
- Judith (6/5): - Have stayed previously. Area has become like a ghost towne
- Tracy (6/5): Think twice... - While it initially seemed like a good place to stay in Frostburg there was definitely some misgivings once we arrived. First was check in...from 3pm to 5pm. If you cant make the window then you have to arrange for afterhour check in which in involves a realtors lock box attached to an iron window grate at the basement level at the back of the hotel. Second, the long walk through the basemant hallway that has seen better days in terms of decore and smell. While the full size dioramas where interesting, everything was old and faded and smelled. Thirdly, the attached restaurant, The Toasted Goat. Apparently it shut down awhile ago, yet both the hotel website and restaurant website continue to promote the restaurant. It is one of the reasons we chose to stay. And finally, while old, the room was clean and tidy. The most interesting thing though is that we never saw a single soul the entire time. No staff, no guests. It was....concerning....and gave off Shining vibes.
- John (10/5): - Price hard to beat
- Sherrie (10/5): - The town is old and quaint- lots of cute shops
- Crystal (6/5): - Very old building but clean
- Verified traveler (4/5): Skip it - Messaged them twice and called once and then I got a call saying they needed to know when I'll be checking in. They are only at the desk from 3-5pm. After that, you are on your own. Literally. Wanted some ice, no one around, so no ice. No fridge and no microwave in the room. TONS of people live there full time.
- Sandra (10/5): - A very enjoyable stay
- Erin (10/5): - Perfect overnight stay!
- Seiche (8/5): - It was a very nice place kind staff. Unfortunately is asked to get my room serviced after putting up the door hanger asking to get my room serviced and it never was. I was there for 4 nights. Views were nice and everyone was kind. It was a bit rustic for my taste.
- joan (8/5): - Keep in mind when you book this hotel ,that it is historic. There is a museum in the basement and remnants of the past all over the hotel. Due to limited staffing, there are no people at the front desk after 8pm on some nights. The room was decorated in a victorian style and was clean. This hotel doesn't have a restaurant any longer or ice machines, fridges, microwaves . It's an old hotel. The price was reasonable and I enjoyed my stay. I liked the nostalgia.
- Harold (8/5): - Old hotel but rooms were clean & bathrooms was very clean. Would rate this hotel a higher score over a lot of chain hotels. I would book this hotel again.
- Benjamin (8/5): Okay place to stay. - Really neat place with good potential, some areas of the hotel are old and need some refinishing work and carpet.
Room lacked modern amenities such as a fridge, not great for someone who has medicine that has to stay cool.
- Dennis (6/5): - It is a very unique hotel in Frostburg, but there is no staff, or should I say 1 person on staff. The very nice restaurant next door has recently closed, and that is a poor sign for this establishment.
- GoPlaces43482686221 (8/5): Nice Historic Hotel - Nice historic hotel. We stayed in the "Roy Clark" room. Unfortunately when we got there, the room was only half cleaned. Fortunately, the front desk came up, grabbed the dirty towels, and gave us new ones. The bed is firm, not the best for side sleeping but good for the back. Outside of that, it was a pleasant stay. The staircase is amazing! The little jail cell in the basement was interesting, as was the coal cart. Just a shame the Speakeasy was also closed permanently. I did not see any ghosts. However, I "thought" I felt someone pressing down on the end of the bed.
- Jeffrey (8/5): - Landmark building, quiet, center of town.
The room was clean.
- Erica (2/5): Has to have fake reviews.. - I don’t even know where to begin.. the ceiling was literally falling, mold, filthy carpets, there is people living in this building.. as an apartment building.. we were given a room on the second floor and that was the only “hotel” room on that floor. Wires hanging from the ceiling in hallway roof leak.. there is no restaurant no bar, no winery.. this is false advertisement. The owner is aware and doesn’t care.
- Voyager73995 (4/5): A Dive - At least the air conditioning worked but no refrig, microwave or coffee maker as stated by Trip Advisor. Ice is only available until 8pm. It’s pretty much a dive. Our room wasn’t cleaned but the bed was made. Obvious and visible items left by the previous person. No restaurant - it closed. Trip Advisor needs to update their information on amenities, etc. to be more reflective of the actual facility. I may be leaving early.
- Barry (8/5): - Lovely old hotel. Rooms are comfortable if not to large.
- Jeremy (10/5): A Little Piece of History - Great place to stay. The hotel has such an interesting history. It has an historic look and feel, but not run down at all. There's even a fun little "museum" in the basement level. Very clean and comfortable. Excellent location too. It's surrounded by shops and places to eat.
- sheila (10/5): - Perfect for a ride on the GAP trail.
- Pam (8/5): - My room was clean and updated, the bed was comfortable and there were plenty of towels. Water pressure was great. I did not encounter any hotel staff as I checked in after 4 pm and left before 10 am which is when the desk is staffed. Communication before my stay with staff was good and clear.
- Eric (10/5): - An unpretentious hotel in a historic building, basic but with a good bed and super clean. Frostburg and its surrounding area is beautiful and we had a good stay here visiting family. You can bring your dog since the hotel is pet friendly with no pet fee! Unfortunately they recently closed the restaurant but there are plenty of other options close to the hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great location in downtown Frostburg - We had a great stay at Hotel Gunter. The staff were very helpful. We loved all the historic details, including the basement jail! The stairway lobby is a very grand place for photos. We enjoyed sitting out on the balcony. The location was perfect for walking around town and finding restaurants. We also loved visiting the charming Main Street Books next door.
- James (8/5): - It was a unique building. The downtown area was nice. Didnt like the parking situation. Shower drain was clogged. Small room.
- Lisa (8/5): - Vintage hotel with Victorian charm and beautiful interior woodwork. Showing a bit of its age, but clean and quiet. Very walkable area. No USB charging. Window A/C. Room was a decent size, bed/mattress was very comfortable. Good water pressure/shower head.
- Ashlie (10/5): - This was unlike other hotels in that it felt homey. The hotel was built in 1897 and was definitely quirky but also completely charming and unique. If we come back to Frostburg we would 100% stay here again every time!
- Kristina (10/5): - Great
- Kristine (10/5): - The workers were extremely friendly. The hotel itself had so much history. Had a wonderful time. The rooms are small but very clean and quaint.
- David (10/5): Nice! - Nice comfortable room. Clean and roomy.
- Rick (10/5): - Always a pleasure to stay at the Gunther.
- Aaron (10/5): - Staff super sweet and room comfy. No complaints.
- sofie (10/5): Thanks Jane - Great. Jane was very supportive and accommodating due to my late arrival.
- Marbury (10/5): - What a great place to stay. I expect we'll stay there again next time we're in the area.
- GERALD (10/5): - The property is older, built in 1897, so it's very unique.we ;
loved the dining area and staircase. I have never stayed in a hotel that old so the age shows especially in the lower level but it's very charming. We would recommend to others and stay again also.
- Mark (4/5): - Upon arriving in our room and lying on our bed, we discovered that our behinds sank deeply into an old memory foam mattress. There was a huge divot/crease that our behinds sank into. The mattress needs to be badly replaced. The bathroom is large but there is no counter to place toothpaste/toothbrushes and other amenities so you have to place them on the back of the toilet.
Secondly, on day 2 of our 3 day stay, we put the sign on the door knob asking housekeeping to change the sheets, towels, etc. Housekeeping did not provide that service. Then this morning (Monday), we asked the front desk (there wasn’t anyone at the front desk at 8:30 on Saturday or Sunday…they arrive at 10:00) about this and were told that normally housekeeping doesn’t service the room while people are still in their rooms, even if they have left for the day and have the sign up. Plus, housekeeping employees all leave at 1:00 pm.
This begs the question as to why even have those doorknob signs if it’s not going to be looked at?
As for location, it’s wonderful as is western Maryland. It’s the only saving grace.
- Nicholas (10/5): - Me and my wife love staying in old historic hotels and Bnbs so this was right up our ally. Very cool place we absolutely love it. And plan on making this our regular place to stay when in town each year for del fest
- BLENDA VITE (6/5): - Need people
In front desk. For help and support tho
The clients
- John (10/5): - I always enjoy these historic hotels, this management is doing a great job.
Thank you for having us.
- Meghan (8/5): - Great central location in Frostburg to spend a night. Our room was very clean and the mattresses in our 3rd floor double room seemed to be new but the rest of the finishes have seen better days. The Toasted Goat served great food and drinks. Front desk staff was also very welcoming.
Things that need attention. Elevator smelled funky like something leaked on the carpet. The basement level carpet is super stain from something leaking being dragged down the hallway it need to be steamed cleaned.
- Deborah (8/5): - older property but clean and quiet and convenient. Landlord not present on property, but we had no issues
- john (10/5): - My first time with this Historic Hotel. The room was comfortable, nostalgic and just what I was looking for. There is no coffee service in the room or elsewhere.
- darrell (6/5): Slow computer - Check in not ideal, they refused to charge to card on file, & i had to drivevover fir my guest.
- Rob (10/5): - A classy old hotel with an excellent restaurant on the premises. Staff called us to confirm our check-in time. The location was right on the main street in the village, with a great bookstore a few doors down, as well as other businesses. We would definitely stay there again.
- Lara (10/5): - It is charming and historical. I felt like I was sleeping at my grandmother’s house (in a good way). Great restaurant and bar attached.
- Cynthia (10/5): - The check in was easy and the woman at the front desk had great local recommendations. The restaurant attached to the hotel is fabulous, too!
- robert (10/5): - Close to everything needed
- jane (10/5): - Always love staying at the Gunter. So much history and convenient to downtown.
- Bruce (10/5): - Nice
- Kimberly (10/5): - This whole place was interesting. Mini museum about local stuff, speakeasy, restaurant, jail, and possibly haunted. Building is very late 1800s but the rooms are modern with a hint of nostalgia.
- Melissa (10/5): Great Stay in Old Hotel - Incredibly helpful and pleasant staff. Rooms were good size, clean and comfortable. Food options onsite and open relatively late and tasty! Definitely worth a second stay.
- Rhyan (8/5): - Great food. (2) bars. Great people. Property is dated but comparatively priced.
- William (10/5): - .
- Denise (6/5): - The room was cold, the air/heat ran all night couldn't sleep. The beds were like a rock to sleep on. Would have been nice to have a small fridge in the room.
- PATRICK (10/5): - Old fashion hotel
- robert (8/5): - Historic building very nice
- Jonathan (10/5): - Na
- Bruce (10/5): - Great
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The Gunther is always great. Clean rooms, quirky, and a great restaurant!
- Bruce (10/5): - Very historical
- Eli (8/5): - The Hotel Gunter is a very charming hotel, with beautiful lobby area and unique details in the halls, etc. The hotel restaurant and basement speakeasy are both very good, the staff is helpful, and there are interesting historic features and displays. It needs a bit of TLC in the guest rooms, but they are still quite comfortable, fairly spacious, a good value. Located in a walkable downtown, with free parking behind the hotel.
- Blaine (6/5): - Parts of the Hotel are in disrepair. We had holes in our bathroom where previous mirror was located. Plater in some of the areas have fallen down, exposing parts of the wall. We found dirty socks in our room. Perhaps they are just short staffed? There is historical significance to the hotel, and I enjoyed the historical content and experience the Hotel provided. Perhaps if it were a little better cared for I could give it a high recommendation. As it stands I give it a mediocre review with a tilt towards average for the history buffs in the crowd.
- Clarence (10/5): - True to 1800s history and architecture, the Gunter Hotel is easily a place that will transport you back in time. Visited during the cold season and the hotel and especially the room remained toasty.
- Bruce (10/5): - Very historic
- Eric (6/5): - The hotel and room were dated. The tv in my room didn't work during my stay. Because I arrived after the front desk went home, I had to use a lock box, and the numbers on the lock box were difficult to read at night with a flash light.
- jadams1016 (10/5): Welcoming - I have stayed here, many, many times. Alyssa, the front desk manager, does a tremendous job and always goes out of her way to make the stay enjoyable. It is an ideal location to explore the town. The connected Toasted Goat bar/restaurant is a nice added feature. The Speakeasy in the basement is a special hideaway. The hotel rooms are quaint and always on point. I love this place.
- Camper606216 (10/5): Great Hotel with a lot of History! - The hotel was great, and I loved the history and location! I read reviews that said the mattress was too hard! I slept great and love a firm mattress :) Being able to walk to the restaurants and bars were a plus. I would definitely stay at this hotel again!
- Scott (8/5): - Old world charm
- jane (10/5): - Love the history. Very convenient.
- TINA (6/5): - Cute town
- Robert (8/5): - Nice place to stay off the GAP bike trail though quite an uphill hike to get there. Food in restaurant was good.
- Luann (8/5): Just ok. - The concept of remodeling an icon is commendable but they haven’t hit the mark. Floors are old, squeaky and very sloped.
Room had only the basics. The main issue was that the bathroom had only a pedestal sink and no place to put your toiletries. The shower had no shelf for shampoo, conditioner or razor.
But it was clean and bed was comfortable.
- Xena (10/5): - Very unique and historic
- Jennifer (10/5): - Such a charming historical building!! Lots of great areas to explore, huge exterior porches to relax with a glass of wine, the restaurant is TOP NOTCH!! The food, drinks, atmosphere far exceeded our expectations. There was live music, and we had a fabulous time!!! Will definitely return.
- HELEN Stacy (8/5): - I enjoyed the hotel, the restaurant and the surrounding area. The lobby and the "museum" in the basement were awesome! My room in the old hotel was not so great, though....
- Jackie (10/5): - Charming hotel. Great restaurant.
- Scott (8/5): - Unique
- Pamela (10/5): Friends getaway - This is our 4th year staying here and we love it. So much character and history. The staff are great and it's the perfect location for visiting downtown Frostburg.
- David (10/5): - Nice atmosphere. Awesome bar and restaurant and friendly staff.
- Angie (10/5): - Wonderful stay
- Maryann (10/5): - Quiet and comfortable
- Holly (10/5): - It's a charming older property with small local museum rooms in the basement. We had dinner and drinks in their restaurant which had upscale offerings incliding vegan. For breakfast there were 3 small restaurants and cafe just steps from front door. Take some time to enjoy the front shared balconies - so relaxing.
- Monica (10/5): - Love the history of the place and the restaurant attached great stay
