Maikel, the barman, was the one member of staff who stood out for his warmth and kindness. Overpriced for what it offers and for being in a non tourist spot. Restaurant looks really pretty but food was really bad and again overpriced. Also hotel looked empty when we arrived but they would not check us is early, first time this happens to us.

- Gerry (9/5): An oasis of comfort. - I booked this accommodation to shorten the drive after a swelteringly slow border crossing into Nicaragua. The superlative service, comfortable room, excellent restaurant and included breakfast was a welcome respite from the tough day due to the 4 hour border crossing. The parking for motorcycle wasn't gated but there was an overnight watchman. Given the presence of a median in front of the hotel it must be approached from only one direction, meaning that a u turn may be necessary.

- Ileneinakayak (7/5): Too expensive, but nicest place closest to Chinandega - This is the second time that my husband and I have stayed at this hotel. There really aren't a lot of options in Chinandega, and this is probably the nicest hotel that is the nearest to the city of Chinandega. It's too expensive, and with the 15% tax it felt like I was paying too much for a hotel in Chinandega, which really isn't all that nice of a place to visit. It is nice that there is a discount for the weekends, but again with the 15% tax (which I know isn't the fault of the hotel) it's too much. That being said, the place has its perks. The staff are pretty friendly and hard-working. I had a very good cappuccino in the little bar that was fairly priced. The included breakfast is great and I like that it goes until 10am. You can order eggs any way that you like. There's very good granola with a creamed jam that I loved! Fruit, fresh juices, baked goods, breads, salsa, gallo pinto, platanos, very good. The grounds around the pool are quite nice with lots of seating, although the pool was mostly closed while we were there because of Tropical Storm Sara. It dumped so much rain! This time we didn't order any food for lunch or dinner, but last visit we did and I remember the dinners being very delicious, and you can be served at the tables by the pool. The rooms are spacious, as was our bathroom. The restaurant next door, RostiPollos, has the same owner and is pretty good and very convenient. We tried the sushi place another block up the road, Dragonfly, that was just okay. The AM PM convenient store and pharmacy are very convenient as well. The best is to go get nacatamales at a place very close by (10-minute walk towards Chinandega, right at the roundabout towards town, and about 2 blocks down on the right) only Friday-Sunday. This woman is FAMOUS for her nacatamales and you really must go! They are the best, and only a few dollars. You can eat there or take-out. I typically choose hotels that have hot water and this was a huge disappointment. There would be hot water after a few minutes and it would only last for literally 1 minute, then turn cold again. Also the WiFi is different in each room and doesn't work very well. When I wanted to leave the room to read outside in one of the comfy seats I was kicked off the room WiFi and the general hotel WiFi wasn't working. Not a huge deal, but if a hotel says that they offer free WiFi throughout the entire hotel, then they should provide that. One of the things that this hotel says they offer is soundproof rooms, which is definitely not true, and they shouldn't make this false claim. The rooms are relatively quiet yes, but not soundproof. One of the biggest issues that we had was a large party that the hotel hosted on a Saturday night with BLASTING music until 12:30am. We had wanted to go to sleep so much earlier and simply couldn't until the party ended. IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO NOISE DEFINITELY INQUIRE ABOUT THE HOTEL HOSTING A PARTY DURING YOUR STAY! It would be nice if the tea selection had more variety. There is only chamomile available, and there should be more options like black and green teas (again, for the price!). The first night that we were there, there were actually 4 of us, then we switched rooms when it was only two of us. Both rooms there had only been one body towel in the bathroom. For the price I paid I would expect the number of towels to be reflected by the number of guests. It's just slightly annoying to have to ask for something as simple as that... details for the price.

- Alexandra (10/5): 5-Star Review of The Portales Hotel in Chinandega! - I recently had the pleasure of staying at The Portales Hotel in Chinandega, Nicaragua, and I can’t recommend it highly enough! From the moment we arrived, the welcoming atmosphere and outstanding service made us feel like we were part of a family. The pool is absolutely stunning—clean, beautifully designed, and the perfect temperature! It was a fantastic place to relax during the warm days. Breakfast was a highlight of each morning. The all-you-can-eat buffet offered a wide variety of delicious options, and I loved that I could order my eggs cooked exactly how I wanted. Breakfast service from 6 to 11 AM made it easy to enjoy a leisurely start to the day. For lunch and dinner, the culinary offerings were exceptional! I especially recommend trying the salmon with veggies; it was simply phenomenal! Each meal was thoughtfully prepared, and the flavors were incredible. The rooms are perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. The air conditioning was a blessing, the WiFi was excellent, and the spacious bathrooms with walk-in showers were such a treat. Our room was consistently cleaned, ensuring a comfortable stay. What truly stood out, however, was the amazing staff. From Crishian and Francisco at the bar to the lovely concierge team—Heidy, Lorena, Stephanie, and Milagro—their warm smiles and friendly demeanor made every interaction a joy. Jorge was also fantastic.

- Mario (6/5): - Overall this is a nice place to stay when compared to other hotels in Chinadega. They have a very good breakfast, It’s quiet and clean, and staff is friendly. However, the internet signal in my room was very poor and my device disconnected frequently from the wifi. Additionally, the internet speed was slow and did not allow me to download pictures messages. Lastly, it is listed that this hotel has a gym and spa and that is no longer accurate. Expedia and Los portales need to update the gym and spa part. In the gym picture it shows a treadmill which is no longer available. What they do have is Pilates classes that are only available to women (this is what the receptionist told me when I asked about the gym).

- Isabel (10/5): Lizjorge - Always great accommodation in our room. The pool is always clean the staff is great. Breakfast is a good selection of food however they can upgrade the special of the day for the guests like wings, chicken bites, the drinks but in general great place to be 😊

- Elizabeth (10/5): - Wow! What a treasure! We will definitely stay here again. The staff, the rooms, the beautiful property…all incredible! The hotel breakfast alone was worth coming back for. Our breakfast server was the best we ever had anywhere. Multiple restaurants within a few minutes walking distance. We are at Dragonfly last night and it was wonderful. The pool at Los Portales is lovely as well! Very impressed!

- I2480GVjuana (4/5): Not recommended - Yo make a long story short, will not recommend this place, had my car blocked by someone security didn’t care and let him park there had to wait over a half an hour to take somebody’s attention definitely will never stay there again. Not enough parking.

Lack of parking space another vehicle blocked mine had to complain to every person from the staff and no help, waited for about half a hour from the hotel staff to find de owner , security staff in parking lot not doing their job.

- Verified traveler (10/5): - Was an overall nice yet affordable hotel. Only negative was that the lighting to the Hotel entrance after a certain time seems to be turn off. I understand off energy consumption but a sensor and of course the lights to the main entrance of the hotel.
