- ZKawasmi (10/5): - Our stay at Kanaya Hotel Kinugawa was an easy 10/10. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond—warm, attentive, and genuinely committed to making every detail perfect. Their level of care and hospitality made the entire experience feel personal and seamless.
The food was absolutely out of this world—beautifully presented, thoughtfully prepared, and packed with incredible flavor. Every meal felt like a true highlight. Combined with the authentic cultural atmosphere and meticulous attention to detail throughout the property, this stay felt like a fully immersive and memorable experience. We left feeling relaxed, cared for, and already wanting to come back. Nothing was negative, the level of attention to details didnt allow for any negative feedback.
This was a true once in a lifetime experience.

- Sirilak (10/5): Nice hotel with very exceptional services. - Staff Services / Room River View with Autumn Vibres. None
- Matthew (10/5): - The meals were amazing! It was like having dinner at a restaurant with a one star rating from a certain French tire company. The Kanaya family has been serving up luxury for over 100 years and it shows. We loved our room, the view, and the service. There is an electric tower that cuts into the view, but for our photos at least we could digitally remove it. It affects neighboring hotels as well.
- Romina (10/5): Luxurious Onsen Experience - Everything was exceptional - this was likely the nicest hotel we have ever stayed at! The room was beautiful, the view, the private onsen, it was very cozy! The staff were very welcoming and explained everything to us. The public baths were also so beautiful and relaxing, extremely well-stocked in terms of toiletries and amenities. The food was amazing as well - beautifully served and so very delicious! Couldn't recommend the hotel more! Everything was great!
- Barbara (10/5): Besser geht’s nicht! - GRANDIOS!!!!!
….. in jeder Beziehung!
- Nobnan (9/5): perfect - Very nice hotel , Excellent staffs & Food (Breakfast,Dinner) Nothing
- Winnifred (10/5): Wonderful hotel to enjoy Nikko away from main crowds - Location was peaceful with one of the best views of gorge and surrounding hills of autumn trees. Easy walk to bus stations and local shops including best bakery .This hotel has wonderful helpful staff and the chef is one of the best we have experienced in all of Japan( high end kaiseki). We will stay here every time we are at Nikko
- Maximillian (10/5): -
- Melody (10/5): - Everything was wonderful ! Truly the best hotel I’ve ever stayed at. The hospitality was exceptional. The view was amazing. The room was so nice and relaxing.
- Warren (10/5): Overall we had a wonderful stay. This is a 5 Star accommodation with 5 Star service. - Staff. In particular Emi who checked us in, familiarized us with the property, and showed us to our room. Once at our room she explained all the amenities and features in detail. We mentioned to Emi that we were there celebrating my birthday. At dinner our server Takita-San presented with a special birthday dessert! Emi was even there the next morning greeting us at breakfast! Emi is a gem, professional, knowledgeable, intuitive, polite, soft spoken and kind. The hotel and entire staff were great! Everything was excellent.
- Rachel (10/5): Easily the best place we have ever stayed. The staff were so highly trained. It was impressive how well executed every d - This is the most beautiful hotel we have ever stayed in. The staff were very talented - exceptional service. So impressive! Nothing. It was perfect.
- Chor Lai (10/5): - A Very comfortable stay with great staff
- Alina (10/5): - Fabulous service and food. Very comfortable, within easy reach to Nikko by car.
- Robert (10/5): A wonderful hotel with wonderful staff - If you are looking for a real treat, look no further. This hotel is a complete experience in itself. The staff look after your every need and ensure you are always satisfied and relaxed.
- Wendy (9/5): Superb - We enjoyed our stay at Kanaya Hotel Kinugawa. The hotel is well maintained and the staff are all very friendly and helpful and tried their best to ensure that you have an enjoyable stay. We would like to especially thank Emi from the Teppanyaki restaurant for going out of her way to prepare for us the transportation information to get to Chuzenji Lake, our destination the next day. Also, thank you to Fuchigami san who made us feel very welcome and picked us up & dropped us off at the train station (although it was a short distance from the hotel). Although our room was spacious, comfortable & had a nice view of the river, the air vent in the sleeping area of our room needs to be checked. My husband and I could feel the air from the air conditioning system blowing at us when we were sleeping, which affected our sleep.
- Yifan (9/5): Best experience ever in Japan - Excellent experience! I was very impressed by the room and the meal. Everything is nice there especially the staffs who are really friendly and always willing for helping. They will pay attention to your every living habit and always give you the best service. The view is also excellent, feeling so good surrounded by the nature. I even met a wild monkey during my morning bath. However it's a little bit inconvenient if you want to go Nikko. And Kinugawa, to be honest, is a kind of boring city.
- J3910DMjoshs (2/5): Dietary restrictions- no plant based accommodations -
I recently inquired about dietary accommodations at Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel, and while I was impressed with the hotel's emphasis on nature, body, and mind, I was surprised by their inability to accommodate vegan guests.
As someone who values mindfulness and sustainability—principles that often align with the vegan lifestyle—I expected a more inclusive approach, especially from an establishment that highlights such values. Unfortunately, the hotel was unable to provide plant-based options, and their response suggested that vegans would need to cancel their reservation entirely.
While I understand the challenges of adapting menus, small steps like offering plant-based options could align more closely with the hotel’s stated mission and make it a more welcoming place for all guests. Inclusivity not only enhances guest satisfaction but also reflects positively on the brand’s commitment to harmony with nature and sustainability.
I hope Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel considers this feedback as an opportunity to evolve and better reflect the values they promote. For travelers with specific dietary needs, I recommend confirming accommodations in advance.
- John (10/5): - Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel is an incredible property with unparalleled Japanese hospitality. The stunning surroundings are matched by the dedication of the staff, especially Moeka, who was exceptionally personable and professional. Her service made my stay unforgettable. Highly recommend this gem to anyone visiting the area!
- TassieTravellers99 (10/5): Once in a lifetime experience - This amazing hotel is located in the heart of Kinugawa with views over the gorge and is a 15 minute drive to Nikko. On arrival there are staff to take your car and bags and to check you in which is a seamless experience. There is coffee and tea available on arrival while you wait. This occurs in a pleasant lounge overlooking the forested valley. Across from the lounge is a well appointed shop.
We had room 212 for three nights which was a spacious room done in traditional Japanese style. Although plainly decorated it had a very authentic feel and design. The room had a nice balcony but this could not easily be used as the afternoons were hot. There was minimal view from this room limited to trees and forested hillside and not the river. Perhaps the higher floors would likely have a better view.
Spacious bathroom with a separate toilet. Good shower but no external curtain or privacy screen available. Along with the Onsen being out in the open on the balcony we found this lacked privacy for our liking. There was excellent responsive air conditioning. The room rate includes free mini bar with beer and iced tea and water. Only negative was poor quality towels and tissues.
All staff were extremely attentive and nothing is too much for them.
Excellent Alacarte breakfast was brought directly to your table. You are offered a choice between Japanese and Western breakfast. Some options rotated each day. Apart from this the choice was limited to 3 types of eggs. Everything was quality.
Included in the rate was half board dinner each evening. Whilst you are at dinner your futon bed is made up in your room complete with turn down service which was usually a snack for later in the evening. The meal is 2 plus hours and very Japanese but again absolute quality. After three nights it does feel excessive to be enjoying a lengthy multi course menu but we did get to experience many meals that we would not normally try. The attention to detail went so far as having different crockery for each course. Some of these were very artistic.
Overall this is an amazing one off experience although you do pay for the privilege.
- Gaylene (10/5): Loved the room, the food, the staff, the onsen. Would stay here again. Cute little town with train station only 3 minute - Everything. Beautiful, clean, good food, friendly staff. A bit far from Nikkō, will need to train or taxi into town.
- Gabriele (8/5): - a very nice quiet hotel with inside and outside onsen. Enjoyed the view from the balcony.
- KI-NRT (8/5): A historic luxury property that has aged gracefully - Given The Kinugawa Kanaya is a classic luxury hotel that more than holds its own against newer competition. Three areas allow it to stand out: the food, the view and the service.
We were pleasantly surprised at how fresh the interior was - everywhere from the reception/lobby to the rooms were in really good shape (not a scuff mark in sight.) And, unlike many "grand dame" style properties, the decor was not dark and drab in any way. It still retains its historic and classy charm, but has adapted itself to go with the times.
We felt the service was perfect. Kanaya deftly managed the perfect balance of formality and attentiveness with finesse and grace - all of that without being overly stuffy in the process.
The dining experience was an absolute highlight, and among the top 5 meals we've ever had at any top-flight hotel/ryokan in Japan (and that's saying something, believe me!) The Mrs. and I both agreed that there was not a single dish (of many) that we felt was not incredible. And here's another aspect where Kanaya continually improves - they don't allow its classic style to mean old-fashioned in the food department, either. Each dish was familiar, but was prepared and flavored in a very unique and innovative way. It was certainly not a case of "we've had it before, but it's a bit better here" kind of experience. Example: one of the courses was Bouillabaisse, but it was no ordinary Bouillabaisse - the soup contained White Miso (soybean paste), among other things, and it was amazing. And, of course, they used local seafood which consisted of Sea Bream, Japanese Tiger Prawn, Scallops and local vegetables. It was amazing. It was either the best Bouillabaisse we've ever had (if you can call it Bouillabaisse), and if not, then it was definitely the best soup-based dish we've ever tasted. It was that good.
If there's a knock against the Kanaya, it's with the rooms - specifically the size of them. Given the rather exorbitant prices that it commands (mind you, the prices are inflated everywhere in the Nikko area by Japan standards), you would think that rooms would be a bit more spacious than they actually are. It's not claustrophobia-inducing, but certainly not roomy enough to want to spend all day lazing away in the room. While the Kanaya has 7 room categories, the actual room size of all of them - save for the John Kanaya Suite - are 66 square meters, with the only difference among them being the floor they're located in, whether the guests have club lounge access, balcony size, and the location of the private in-room onsen bath (some are on the balcony, whereas others are in the room itself.)
Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel emphatically dispels the notion that "historic" does not necessarily have to mean outdated, old-fashioned, snobby and in need of a massive refurbishment. It shines in just about all aspects, with the room size and price the only thing keeping it from being an all-time great.
- VincentSwift (8/5): The Classic Kanaya in Nikko - Exactly what's written on the tin. The classic hotel in Nikko. Great location - top of the hill - for the sacred shrines and temples, and for jumping off to the lakes further up the valley. But close enough to head down Main street, stop off at the craft shops, and pull in at the train/bus station for local touring. Very old-school design, and somewhat formal, but very welcoming and not to be missed even to swing by for lunch on the way to the shrines. Pricey, in-keeping with Nikko's price-iness, but not out of line. A classic, to be savoured.
- paulmL1424FA (10/5): Service, impressive. - An excellent stay at this Kanaya. The staff are not only professional and attentive but also very kind hearted. Whilst we were trying to eat dinner with a very demanding two year old the restaurant staff offered to play with our little one for a while so we could finish off our meal, things like this make a big difference.
Thoroughly recommended, nice baths and ambience around the hotel.
If you bring wine for dinner the corkage is a little expensive at 3500 yen and there isn't a *convenience shop in the hotel, or drink machines.
A small trade off for an excellent stay.
- GreyLephan (8/5): Good food, good chocoloates, good onsen, nice view... but rooms a little small - Dinner at the restaurant is very delicious, with a dessert trolley at the lounge area after dinner. They seem to be specialising in chocolate confectionery, as can be seen in the extensive range sold in the gift shop. The view overlooking the valley is nice, and the onsen is big and nicely furbished. The only downside is the small-ish room size, and the old-ish decor in the room.
another minor complaint, it took us about 30min to check in, despite being the only customer at that time.
- CherisseY1 (8/5): Excellent service but too expensive. - I kept reading reviews online to research more about the hotel and I've been reading the best reviews. No one brings up how expensive it is and I don't feel that it was really worth it.
The onsen
- The view or ambiance wasn't nice. I wish it had a better view to compensate for the expensive price.
- It did have complete amenities and everything else you'd need
The rooms
- Very nice but old.
Food
- Beautifully made
- Small portions
- Expensive
Service
- Superb
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- yin peng (10/5): Highly recommended - Everything about this hotel is great. Indoor n outdoor onsen was nice and clean. About 30 mins drive from Nikko station
- Ikki07 (10/5): What an amazing experience! - The travel agency did not talk too much about this hotel when preparing our Honeymoon trip...and it was the best one we stayed at. It was amazing! Everything was managed with a lot of care since the first time we put a foot on there. The service was brilliant, the Onsen was great and the dinner we had amazing! I really recommend you to stay one night to feel the experience. It really worth it!
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- dianeo347 (10/5): Historic & Beautiful - Stayed here one nite—very clean n well kept n altho there r no elevators to the upstairs rooms, the views r so breathtaking n the gardens r gorgeous! Service is impeccable n we experienced their first class fine dining. Our room was very spacious n bathrooms have modern facilities. I would recommend this historic hotel to anyone passing this way into Nikko.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hotel is just 5 minutes walk to Kinugawaonsen Train Station. You can take the bus from the bus stop outside the Train Station to most of the attraction near Kinugawa. The hotel's staff is nice and friendly. The food from the hotel is great. I booked a room with private Onsen, nice and great experience.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- ChaicharnD (10/5): Excellent service and nice hotel - We stay in the room 311 that have private open air bath and balcony with Mountain View. The decoration of the room is nice and modern. The service and dinner of the hotel is excellent. There are complimentary drink and sweet before and after meal that very nice.
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Socyy (8/5): Modern Onsen Hotel - This is a midsized Onsen Hotel, which means less crowded and quiet. There were less people in the hot spring, less chance of meeting a big group of travelers, and could enjoy a quiet and relaxing dinner. This is probably one of the most modern designed hotel in that region. The western-Japanese room is spacious. The balcony is facing the river. We had dinner in the John restaurant. It started with some wine outside the restaurant, followed by a full course dinner and finally with some coffee and light desert and home made chocolate in the lobby. The western style breakfast took place in the restaurant and faced the garden. The hotel staff were very polite , but the only downside was that they could only speak or understand English. But we could still communicate.
- Chotibhak (10/5): - Everything was amazing- the food, the service, and the onsen. We had a great time.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- danforth1 (10/5): Perfection! - Beautiful refined hotel in a wonderful mountain gorge. Quite town close to Nikko Unesco world heritage site, easy for a day trip to Nikko. From the attentive staff, fabulous architecture, wonderful room and amazing food this place is pure perfection! Our room looked out on a beautiful gorge with a milky blue river and fall colors. Sitting on the balcony was just amazing! We also had our own private room in the lovely restaurant for the exquisite meals. Thank you Hotel Kanaya Kinugawa Onsen!
- Florence (8/5): - Very nice ,quiet ,good for relax.,,.you can see and listen Kinugawa river from the room
- Orchid328 (10/5): Love this place. - I always visit this "Ryokan" type of hotel with my husband around Christmas every year.
It is just a perfect place to relax.
After we check in, we never leave our room until the check-out.
(Except when I go to SPA, which is also excellent.)
If you are stying in the certain kind of rooms, you can also request to have dinner and breakfast in the room.
There is also a hot spring in the room, this is one of the reasons why we don't need to leave the room.
To be honest, there is not much around the hotel to look around, but if you are there to just relax, enjoy the view and nice food, this is the perfect hotel to choose.
- Mark (4/5): Overpriced. - No dinner options, nothing around. Nice view. Breakfast below average for the price of hotel
- HelsnMax09 (10/5): Relax Relax - From the moment you arrive you know you are somewhere really special. You could arrive with no extra clothing or bathroom products, every thought for an amazing stay is thought of. The onsen was the best I experienced on the trip to Japan, indoor and outdoor bathing areas. The products where luxurious, the whole area so clean and fresh, one overnight stay was reviving. Our tatami mat room/suite was so beautifully laid out, overlooking the river with a private balacony. The air was so fresh and the View mesmerising. Meals so special, kaiseki style, with so much thought to the presentation as well as the freshness and flavour. If I leave home you know where to find me!
- 796leer (10/5): Full of atmosphere - We loved this place. It is old, but reeking of character. Our room, 18, in the original building, was large and clean and very new looking. I think some of the other rooms might not have been as nice. Our plan included breakfast and dinner, which were both very good. The hotel is walking distance to the main shrines and the bridge. We got great service, the gal at the front wrote out directions for us as to how to get places. It wasn't cheap. But we loved it.
- dcfchan2121 (6/5): Grant environment - If you are looking for grant hotel, you will not be disappointed. The onsen is great, the room is clean but not too spacious but the view is fantastic with very the river just in front of the balcony.
If you are looking delicious food, you may not be satisfied. The set dinner I tried is a fusion of western food and Japanese food. The appearance is good but the taste is ok without suprise. The Japanese breakfast is really a bit disappointed.
Overall, the price is not worth for the whole package
- michaelr423 (10/5): Paradise it is and highly recommendabl! - I agree with the reviewer "jaynezak" from California! How could anyone keep complaining about this wonderful hotel in the mountain country side of Nikko! We must expect and desire true Japanese culture if we venture so deep into the heart of Japan!
Let's start with the service! Impeccable to say it with one word! Generally everywhere we go in Japan we get super service but Kanaya Hotel is the best so far. Attention to detail and using our name from arrival to departure! We were picked-up at the train station by Lexus car and we noted the hotel was only about 5 minutes walking distance! Wow! We were checked-in by Ms. Mikany or "MeYou" and she is a Darling with perfect English. She explained the hotel, meal particulars etc etc and right away stated to call on her for any assistance or to also ask for Ms. Sakoyori or "Ayoka" as also she speaks good English. YouMe was always there for us and we like to thanks you for arranging the water rafting and Edo Wonderland tours! Also thanks to our waiter Mr. Ryosuke or "Suzuki" for taking care of us and explainin the food!
Kinugawa ONSEN is a pretty town nestled along a wild river flanked by mountains and pure air! Indeed not many foreigner from the west come here thus it feels really outhentic Japanese! We (2), one Thai and one German), stayed here for 3 nights at the 5 star deluxe Kanaya Hotel which has all rooms face the river and mountains. We stayed in a "western style suite" (66spm) with large balcony inclusive of private ONSEN! Simply fantastic suite with all the amenities of a luxury hotel. The suite included half board (breakfast and dinner) Ryokan style. Breakfast was either Jap or western choice and the dinners was only Jap style, 5 course breakfast (including Cheese omelette) and dinner was about 9 courses. Every day the Menus changed and the food was spectacular in taste and presentation! Specially the beef dishes were delisous! Before and after every dinner we were seated in the lounge for ordeurves and Kanaya made chocolate respectively! All the time guests spend in the hotel traditional Japanese dresses are provided...great experience and so relaxing! During the day time free coffee and soft drinks are served in the lounge or on the terrace! Nice touch! The lounge also offers alcoholic drinks against payment and some desserts. As this is a Ryokan hotel no standard restaurant or room service Menus are available!
The ONSEN was also amazing! They rotate male/female between an indoor and outdoor ONSEN between AM/PM. The outdoor ONSEN is great and relaxing. The entire hotel is spotlessly clean and so was our suite with daily complete cleaning. After dinner time they even ask us when we like the suite cleaned the next day!
This hotel is not cheap and the cliental seemed to be purely affluent Japanese people from the big cities as only expensive cars were parked! Our suite was about 900.-$/night but worth every dollar and we will be back for sure! Perhaps also a nice get-away just for a week or two of pure relaxation! Temperature was perfect with clear skies for day 27 degrees and 15 for the nights!
Highly recommendable for the decerning traveler who can accept Ryokan traditions at its best!
- blacklagoon37215 (10/5): Paradise Japan style - What an experience for an American that was making her first trip to Japan. This is the ultimate!!! I stay in hotels everywhere and this is one of the best. From the welcoming staff as we checked in to the same warm send off we felt taken care of in every way. The Onsen baths were in and outdoors . Nothing compares to sitting in steaming hot volcanic water and watching the moon and stars. The food was unreal...we had the same waiter for every meal and were seated in the same private room . We booked a room that had the mats and the small table, but also western style beds (I went with my 2 adult children) It might be a bit off the beaten track to get here, but it is worth the effort.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Classy but dated and not located in central Nikko - This is an unusual property, located in a resort area that is substantially deserted. The view is not as pastoral as pictured since there are pylons in the way. The distance from picturesque Nikko is substantial even though the property is listed as Nikko. It was a $60 cab ride away since we didn't realize that the nearest train station was not Nikko Station. The restaurant is what saves the experience although it is a VERY VERY expensive stay.
- Kazu (10/5): Luxury Hot Springs Hotel for Adult - We experienced Luxuries attentive Japanese Service "Omotenashi"
- Jill (10/5): Beautiful ryokan/hotel in Kinugawa onsen - Very clean, new and modern hotel while maintaining a traditional Japanese ryokan feel. Very Comfortable bathrobes. Beautiful bathroom and rain head shower. Private onsen are amazing - looking over Kinugawa river and mountains (some construction in the view near by but not loud). Public onsen beautiful and zen - some outdoor, some indoor. Food was good - kaisaeki type meals served in dining area.
