• danceinclouds (6/5): A Disappointing Return to What Was Once a Favorite - In 2018, I stayed at this hotel and was absolutely amazed. The experience left such a deep impression on me that I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I fondly remembered the beautiful piano and violin performances in the lobby, the delightful room with a private hot spring on the balcony, and the cozy Japanese-style private dining rooms serving exquisite cuisine. At the end of last year, I finally booked another stay, excited to relive the magic. Unfortunately, this time was a letdown. While I couldn’t secure a room with a hot spring, the differences went far beyond that. The room I stayed in was quite ordinary, lacking the charm I remembered. The dining area had changed to standard partitions instead of the intimate Japanese-style rooms, and while the food presentation was still stunning, the flavors were unremarkable, and the portions left me feeling unsatisfied. Sadly, this stay didn’t live up to my cherished memories, and I know I won’t be returning again.
• 654galg (6/5): Great location and onsen but without meals - Special location on a hill next to a waterfall, little hotel with an onsen both private in the room and public The room and onsen were great A special experience not to miss The only thing that was missing is a breakfast or restaurant of any kind According to the reception the chef took a day off🤷🏻‍♀️ The hotel is very isolated abd hard to get without a car, so we had to buy few things and eat at the room, i think it’s not appropriate for a hotel not to think about their customers
• beachykeen70 (8/5): Lovely ryokan - some things to note, but we would recommend. - Staying here was a very enjoyable experience. We stayed for 2 nights. What we enjoyed: 1. The quiet country atmosphere 2 our own private onsen (divine)! 3. The private onsens where you can lock the door. 4. The dinner was spectacular - presented beautifully, in our own private room. 5. Large rooms. 6. Wearing our traditional and comfortable yukatas to dinner was so nice. Things to be aware of: 1. The rooms are very dated! Comfortable but dated. 2. Our fridge had seals that no longer sealed hence the fridge was useless. 3. They only offer a Japanese breakfast these days (which our group did not enjoy). I had advised previously of a fish allergy so I received a western breakfast instead which was great. We asked if we could all have this on the 2nd morning, but the response was they don’t do western breakfasts (obviously only if you prearrange an alternative). 4. If arriving on the train, it’s a precarious trip down hill with your luggage (the hotel will only offer a courtesy pick up at certain times). 5. The hotel does not have a bar or food outside of breakfast and dinner (if you have this as part of your package) so you will need to come organized with food and drinks outside these times. The hotel is a bit isolated - during the day it is easy enough to get to a convenience store - but not at night.
• HannahG2430 (8/5): Lovely staff & experience; if a little expensive - The staff were lovely and the concept of a private onsen in your room was great for a special occasion (we were on our Honeymoon); we also didn’t struggle to use any of the “shared” private onsen (there are three you turn up and lock the door and it is yours for 45 mins). These were slightly bigger than the private onsen hence why we used both. Whilst the hotel was a lovely experience after the wonderful chaos of Tokyo I’m not sure it was worth the £330 a night we paid. The room needed updating - there were patches of masking tape covering gaps in the floor for example. We also experienced a loud humming noise in our room the duration of the trip that couldn’t be fixed; despite the staff being super helpful. We were in room 47. The food was an experience! If you enjoy sashimi / raw fish you will love it. I have attached pictures of the menu both nights we stayed; night two menu was much preferred. The breakfast was a unique experience (fish and rice) which was nice to try but not our cup of tea as Westerners! Still amazingly presented. Disappointing only water or oolong tea was included in the price and we had to pay 800yen for a beer with the meal given we’d paid so much to stay to begin with. In summary: definitely worth staying somewhere like this on your trip to Japan! But it is expensive so don’t expect a full “five star” experience
• Bharat257 (8/5): beautiful resort in the midst of nature - large, comfortable, scenic rooms with a nice seating area with tatami floors. excellent japanese breakfast ...only problem is , it has to be booked in advance. as with the dinner ...kaiseki dinner but requires a prior booking so we missed out on that. Lovely private and public hot baths. nestled among trees and greenery. quite a revitalising stay!
• thelooo (10/5): Wonderful resort with private baths and amazing food - We stayed for two nights at this wonderful resort, and it felt like a dream. We booked a suite with a private onsen. The room itself was very large, and the beds quite comfortable. I can't say the same for the sofas, which felt as if they had seen better days and felt awfully springy; thankfully, we didn't need anybody to sleep on them overnight. The private bath was of course the main attraction, and it was just wonderful -- it was so enjoyable we took 4 dips just on the first day. We also tried the family bath down on the 1st floor one afternoon; at no point did they all look full and they were great for stretching out your legs and getting more space to soak in. The food was the other star here. Both dinners were spectacular. The food was traditional Japanese food, with no substitutions or changes; some of the dishes were certainly things we wouldn't have ordered if given the choice, but turned out delicious. For breakfast, we were not offered a choice but simply served a Japanese breakfast. I'm not sure everything was to my palette, but the parts that were were cooked to perfection. I'm talking some of the most perfectly grilled fish I have ever had. The front desk staff was impeccably polite and spoke English with no problems at all. They happily took our bags when we arrived hours before check-in, and even provided some maps of the area. No complaints at all. The resort looks close on the map to Kowakidani train station, but trying to walk the hilly road with no sidewalk while dragging two suitcases was not at all a pleasant experience. The hotel does offer a ride in their private van to/from the train station, which we took advantage of upon checking out and would recommend. Otherwise, the main transportation available is the H bus, which is convenient (running from Hakone-Yumoto all the way down to Lake Ashi), but only comes every 15-20 minutes, can be very crowded, and takes many many tight turns -- great for sightseeing but not recommended if you are bringing luggage!
• Tin903 (10/5): Cozy Artistic Ryokan/Hotel with private onsen! - I wanted to give it a 4.5 star but half a star is obviously not possible so I just round it up lol Anyway, the location is convenient, pretty close to the train station and the good thing is that they gave me a ride from that train station to the hotel, a really good courtesy ride! Bus is also a good option and the closet bus stop is like a 5-min walk away. There are a few things that I really like about this hotel: 1. The art pieces and decor, very detailed, that distinguish itself from other properties 2. The dinner was soooo good! One of the best ryokan dinner experiences I had 3. The in room hot bath is great and it comes with the price that we paid which is a good deal 4. The private bath for rent was not busy, and when I say rent, it is actually free. I went during the autumn leaves season so I could actually view the autumn leaves when I bath, so going in the red leaves season would give you a surprise 5. This is a cozy and quiet hotel, so if you long for some quiet time this would be the place to go. The thing to improve is that some areas of this hotel are dated which need some touch up. But I can live with those, not major actually. All in all I would recommend this hotel!

• m0m0rin (10/5): Quiet place, healthy cuisine, awesome hot spring - About 10 minutes walk from Kowakidani station, but it is quite steep. I recommend asking the hotel for pickup (by Mercedez!). Some rooms have their own private spring hot tub and it is awesome. No large public bath, but there are three small chartered baths, so you can enjoy it whenever you want even if you stayed in a room without a spring bath. Dinner and breakfast have plenty of vegetables and you can enjoy Bagna cauda and various vegetable sticks with white dip sources. Kaiseki (course meal with many small dishes) is very healthy. The room is clean and cozy, but a bit aged (but it does not blot on the good points at all). Nothing is around here and it is very quiet; it means that you have to buy snacks beforehand. I love this hotel! 御影風呂のお部屋に泊まりましたが、非常に満足しました。お値段が高くなっても、檜風呂や御影風呂の付いているお部屋をおすすめします。 3つ貸切風呂がありますが、「煤竹」が一番見晴らしがよいかも。 お食事もバーニャカウダなど、自然の野菜の風味を生かした懐石料理で、お刺身、お肉も繊細でヘルシー、そしてお腹いっぱいになりました。 駅から遠くはありませんが、険しい坂道なので、送迎をお願いするとよいです。 まわりには何もない静かなところなので、事前に買い物をしておくことをおすすめします。
• stephaniemarien2018 (10/5): Romantic and Beautiful Gem in Mountains of Hakone - We stayed in a Suite with Semi Open-Air Cypress Bath during March of 2020. The whole experience was absolutely wonderful and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend staying here! We are from the UK and as with many places in Japan it goes a long way to speak a little Japanese and learn as many customs as possible whilst you enjoy their beautiful country. We stayed for 2 nights, and I will try and break down each part of our stay! Food - You get your own private dining area which was super romantic and a really lovely touch. We opted for one Japanese style breakfast and one Western breakfast, and as much as I loved the Japanese experience, my other half was grateful for the western breakfast the second morning, so I would definitely recommend this to western travellers. However the evening food was absolutely spectacular, an incredible mix of different types of cuisine with a menu to explain what you are getting, even if there are sparse instructions on how exactly best to eat some parts of the meals! (I think that is all part of the fun and the staff are happy to help try and explain, even with limited English!) The wine and drinks are quite expensive, but living near London, this didn't faze us as much as it seems to some other reviewers! Room and Bath - The in-room onsen looked so inviting and we were incredibly excited on seeing our room as it was pretty spectacular with gorgeous mountain views. Our ONLY gripe was that the bath was INSANELY hot when we first got into the room and only Daenerys Targaryen would be able to get into it! However it did cool over the course of the day and we very much enjoyed not having to leave the room to enjoy the bath! Private Onsens - We also made use of the onsens on site that you literally just walk down to and if one is available you lock the door behind you and it is all yours. We visited quite a few onsens across Japan and it was an absolutely luxury to be able to use one together with my other half as most (all) other onsens are gender specific and public so it is a very different experience. I am truly glad I got to experience both! I would honestly say that if you are trying to save a few pennies, don't go for the tub in your room and just use their ones on site. They are private, clean, and each one is slightly different which is a fun thing to experience. Location - the hotel is up the hill from the town of Hakone and you do need to familiarise yourself with the Round Pass bus system and where to get on and off. Again, we found this all to be part of the adventure, but I can appreciate that if you aren't used to looking at maps and timetables, you may get a little lost/frustrated! If you were short on time, this might not be the hotel for you, but if you have a few days to explore, relax and enjoy, this is 100% the hotel for you. Definitely not a traditional ryoken, and perhaps geared more towards a Western audience, but hey, we were that, and we had an incredible time. Can't wait to go back. Thank you to everyone who made our stay an absolute delight!
• JoopUitendaal (8/5): Great location, delicious food - so, so service and rooms in need of some TLC - The location of The Mantei is wonderful. Peaceful. Entering into a spacious and tastefully designed reception where all check-in formalities are being dealt with efficiently. The rooms are spacious with a nice view. They are however in need of some TLC and modernisation here and there. Especially the bathroom. It could also do with some additional space to store and hang your clothes. Part of the service are these very comfortable cotton pyjamas. The Onsen in the hotel is nice - comfortable and relaxing but not very special. The absolute high-point of the hotel is the food. Absolutely amazing. 7 or 8 courses of very fresh and tasty Japanese dishes. The service in the restaurant is very courteous and kind. The staff at reception could do with some additional training in being 'friendly and helpful'. All in all - a safe bet in the Hakone area
• Verified traveler (10/5): - Such a nice place to relax and take a moment to enjoy where you are. Food was amazing and staff made you feel at home. Was one of my favourite places to stay. Bed was a little too hard for my partner but good for me. You wear your traditional Japanese pajamas throughout the hotel which added to feeling relaxed. I would recommend private onsen, I used it so much and so glad we opted for it.
• Japandroid89 (10/5): Truly an authentic experience of Hakone - Hakone is known for things like the beautiful nature of the Lake Ashi or Owakudani, volcanic hot spot, but it is also known for its Onsen. That is where this property comes into the lime light. Our stay at Manatei Art and Music was for 2 nights at the premium suite called Owakudani. The suite itself is spacious which could, from my observation, can sleep 4 adults 2 on the two double bed pressed together on the left side of the room when you enter through the entrance and 2 on the right side a futon/lounging area. The suite also comes with a private semi open air Onsen which is out to favorite feature of the room. The room is indeed a “Premium suite” for all these features and space plus along with amenities such as solid collection of bathroom amenities as well complementary tea (with Matcha powder and tea kettle) and a complementary water as well. We also paid for half board which means breakfast and dinner was included in our stay. For breakfast, it is a standard Japanese style with an main entree (breakfast can be change to western style upon request before the check in) and dinner is highlight and star of the meal. The hotel calls it a creative Kaiseki 7 to 8 dish course meal which is not only pleasing to the eyes but to palette as well. The service here was impeccable, special thanks to Mr. Oyama for taking care of us during the both meals for both days!! They also have English speaking staff daily from 9 AM to 6 PM at the front desk. So it is foreign friendly as well. After you finalized your booking it also sends an automated email in English that explains everything about the hotel.If you want to get the true authentic experience of Hakone this place is a must.
• mountainandoceans (10/5): Westernized traditional hot bath hotel - The Manatai was the perfect way to experience the traditional Japanese Onsen (hot tub) while still enjoying western comforts. The hotel offers both public as well as private onsens. The service was amazing as was the traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner.
• Kezzoa (10/5): Very Relaxing! - We stayed here for 2 nights on our honeymoon in December 2019. The rooms are amazing! spacious and the in room hot springs hot tub is worth it! Delicious breakfast and dinner included each day. The staff were very helpful and able to get us anything we needed. Highly recommend a stay here if in the area!
• Verified traveler (4/5): - This property was the most expensive on our trip and we looked forward to it the most. Unfrotunelty it was a terrible disappointment. To start with the rooms are average and dated. But the major disastor was the dinner which was unedible. after telling them no sea food, im allergic. I was still served sea food, resulting in arguements each night. This in turn resulted in me being sick for the rest of the holiday. If you dont eat seafood be prepered. The only redeeming feature was the bath. Still however this was worth the drive but not the cost.
• ryankuharic (6/5): Dated Accommodations in Hakone hot spring village - Stayed here for two nights in January 2020. While the staff and food was excellent, the accommodations were lacking and in desperate need of some attention. Hotel and rooms felt old. We had stayed at a variety of properties across Japan so were able to compare to other hotels. The price per room here was high so we were expecting a nicer experience. We even opted for the “suite” with in-room soaking tub. The bed was not very comfortable, noticeable stains on carpet and mats, and the bathroom shower was outside next to the hot soaking tub. As mentioned everyone on staff was very friendly and the hotel dining was really delicious. See pictures. Overall it was fine but given the price I think you could do better.

• lamirap (8/5): Not worth the price tag - Nice cozy hotel with private onsens. The dinner and breakfast was included and our meal preferences were catered for. The staff were friendly and provided excellent service. The rooms had the view the of the mountains but the toilets were a bit cramped. Didn't see any art or music in the hotel, so not sure why it is named as such.

Hotel was a bit dated but clean and well maintained, specially the private onsens. The meal was great and the restaurant was organized as small private rooms which were very relaxing, specially using the provided Japanese robes. We were not able to stay for breakfast so can't speak to that.
• HoKM (10/5): Relaxing retreat with wonderful onsens! - We stayed here for 2 nights in a room with a private onsen. The room was spacious and had modern amenities and was very clean, the private bath in the room was very good and of a decent size. The hotel also provides private family onsens on the 1st floor on a first come first serve basis, so if you find one available, you can lock it and use it. There are also larger public baths for each gender. Service was good and there is machine on the first floor where you can get free hot drinks. Dinner was also very good, the chef's modern take on Japanese cuisine was presented very well, and his use of organic vegetables in meal adds a heathly element to it. There is a running stream on the valley below the hotel which you can see from the lobby, adding to the tranquility of the location. In summary, this is an excellent choice for a private and relaxing retreat in Hakone to enjoy the hot springs!
• N3816ULbobbyc (10/5): 10/10, Could not have asked for more - Upon arriving in the lobby, guests are treated to a picturesque backdrop of Hakone scenery and live piano music. The view from our room was beautiful, and the private hot springs are a big attraction for tourists. Guests also get to wear Japanese style robes that are very comfy and can be worn all around the hotel. As for the included dinner, from where I'm from (Melbourne, Australia), a meal like that probably would've cost around the same as the total stay here. It's proper high class fine dining, and the service is great. I don't usually write reviews, but they went far above and beyond what I could expect. After already checking out in the morning, I left my luggage at their reception (free of charge) and went to look around Hakone, planning to take an evening bullet train from Odawara station. Once I came back to collect my bags, I realised I'd mixed up the public transport and was going to miss my train. They tried calling a taxi for me but all the taxi companies refused, saying there was no way they could get me there in time. This is when one of Manatei's employees actually offered to drive me there himself. He had zero obligation, wasn't charging me anything, and I had already checked out in the morning and was no longer a customer to them. I can't ever recall being offered this kind of hospitality before. I'd recommend this place to anybody :)

• SandBTokyo (6/5): No Music Show, Unimpressive Baths - We did not feel such great value for the price. The hotel is nicely maintained and decorated but the onsen baths are not very special at all. We were expecting to have the music in the evening, it was a Saturday after-all, but they didn't have any show. That was disappointing considering the promotion and theme of music. The food was pretty good, service was nice. Our room was comfortable. The setting is nice with a river down below and mountains all around. We just did not feel the hotel was special as we had expected, we did not feel the value for what we paid. Probably bigger hotel with larger baths would have suited us better.

• Verified traveler (4/5): Great Hakone experience but not fancy - We always find a way to enjoy any experience so we made the best of this stay but for an unassuming traveller this could be a disappointing property if they are not prepared for this experience. The rooms are slightly older and not as remodeled as we have come to expect in Japan but maybe on par for this Hakone area. The hot spring in the hotel the included dinner and breakfast were all a wonderful experience. There are only 18 rooms here so it feels very exclusive.

The hotel is maintained properly but you could see that it is very old. The room had a safe but I wouldn't count on it as it isn't connected to anything, so someone could just pick it up from the room and steal the entire safe.. Dinner + breakfast was so so, but Its probably because we're not fans of this kind of food, but it was an interesting experience. Only bad thing about dinner was that it looked like the restaurant staff tried to rush us to eat quickly, as they've waited no more than 2-3 minutes before serving each dish (there were about 7-8 dishes), so by the time we barely tasted something, the next dish was already served..

All the English speaking tables around us were saying the same thing “more of the same”. Hotel needs updating. I would not return.

We had dietary requirements (no raw fish or any beef) and they were careful to verify exactly what we could/not eat to get the menu perfect. The food was fresh from the surrounding area and served in a private area. The junior suite was worth the money. The staff even dropped us off to the nearest train station to explore the surrounding region in the rain. Superb - we would definitely return!

• Verified traveler (10/5): Relaxing spa onsen experience - Lovely relaxing 4 day stay in this quiet calm spa onsen hotel . Our spacious room looked to the opposite , restful green side of the mountain valley. We didn’t have a private onsen but the public and private onsen were nearly always empty as was the sauna in the public onsen. The meals were sumptuous , exquisitely presented , delicious and very filling ( see menu photo ) . Each evening meal lasted about an hour and a half . The hotel staff were very helpful and courteous ( many spoke excellent English and were kind about our few words of Japanese) . The hotel is easy to reach by H bus or by the train . There is one shop by the train station but it didn’t always seem to be open . There is a lovely walk from the station to a waterfall - wish we’d had our hiking boots as marked paths went further on up the mountain . It was very easy to visit different places such as Lake Ashi , Hakone , Gora and the amazing open air art museum from the hotel . Very relaxed after our stay and now ready for the buzz of Tokyo.

There was a 'recital in the lobby in the evening as well--piano and guitar, a variety of styles with mostly original music composed by the pianist. The rooms were clean, comfortable and well decorated. Dinner and breakfast were included. Dinner was in the keiseki style and was served in a private dining room. It was delicious with a variety of seafood, meat and vegetable dishes. The public onsen was single-sex, clean and essentially private, as there was no one there but me. I was looking for a public onsen experience, but who can say no to a private onsen?? The staff was extremely attentive, both in the lobby and at dinner. The young lady in the lobby took time to help us plan our visit and even wrote out the train stop and schedule to ensure that we returned to Odawara in time to catch our train to Narita as we were flying back to the states that day! Can't say enough good things about our experience at the Manatee Hakone. Highly recommend this property for your stay in Hakone!

I recommend to take a tour from Hakone-Yumoto to Gora to Lake Ashi with the Hakone Free Pass during the morning to early afternoon then taking the H bus from Hakone machi-ko to Jakotsuno which lands you right in front of the hotel. The Kaiseki dinners and breakfast were of high quality, although may be a bit too foreign for western palettes, but a fantastic experience none the less. Would definitely stay here again and would recommend this ryokan for travellers looking to spoil themselves.

• Carole (10/5): Onsen hotel next to a beautiful cascading river - We enjoyed our Hakone getaway (3 days, 2 nights) in April. The weather was perfect (50's F, no rain). Our room was a corner room with wall size windows meeting at the corner. Sheer drapes and additonal drapes (tied back) could be closed for privacy however, there were no other buildings or hotels from our view - just beautful green, lush mountains. We loved our own private onsen in our room, amply large enough for 2 people. Meals are served in the restaurant Hayakawa dining room (private rooms for each party). The food was fantastic: very asthetically pleasing (Japanese artistry). The 7-8 course dinner for both nights were different and equally delicious. The menu is seasonal, and very Japanese - luckily we have no allergies and we eat anything. We ate everything! Breakfast (Japanese, then Western for day 2) was super filling - it carried us over lunch so that we were ready for our big dinners. There is a great coffee machine (lattes, hot chocolate, tea, etc.) that is free to use. The family onsen rooms on the 1st floor are also free to use privately, you can just go in and lock the door. The Kowakidani train station is super close and the bus stop is 2 minutes away, Using the Hakone Free Pass, you can ride unlimited on the buses, trains, ropeway, and boat across the lake.
• Eric (10/5): Great suite - This adorable hotel is nestled in the hills of Hakone. We had a suite with private onsen (hot tub). It was a great romantic time. My only complaint was that the quality of the food seemed below that of the restaurants in the area.
• Ryan (10/5): If you like off the beaten track, then this is it! - Hotel/room was clean and tidy very well maintained and orderly. Quality of service was fantastic, reception was easy to communicate with, even though many people in Japan don't speak English. Amenities were amazing, we used the private onsen with no issues and dinner/breakfast as part of the inclusion was great as well. Delicious food! Only downside is the location is a bit off the beaten track. It is nearby a train station (5 minute walk), and a fairly reasonable bus ride from Odawara station (40 minutes), but it's also another 20 minute bus ride to Ashi Lake, so it's not a really easy accessible type of hotel that is close to everything. If you love being away from the busy-ness of the major Japanese cities than this place is strongly recommended. We definitely come back to visit again in the future!

What we instantly noticed was the lack of mini bar and the 2x twin beds were pushed together as oppossed to us having 1 large bed. The room itself was great, with a private outdoor bath (with a brilliant morning view of the valley). The meals were certainly filling and if you like Japanese food then you're in for a treat!
• Heng Tat (10/5): Relaxing & Enjoyable - We arrived by bus at about 4pm and got off at the Jakotsuno bus stop just in front of Manatei Hakone. The external facade of Manatei was very plain and non-descript but it is completely different inside. The ryokan feels very homely; has an old world charm and an air of subdued elegance throughout - from the decor to the food down to the yukatas provided. Our suite had an in-room private bath, a very deluxe bathroom and comfortable beds. We have picturesque views of the valley and mountain from the tatami sitting room as well as the private bath. We used the private family bath on arrival and it has the same views. There is also a public bath with a large charging room but the bathing area is about the same size as the private family bath. All the baths are semi open-air. One can take in the picturesque views, be chilled by the crisp autumn air while soaking in the bath. For dinner, we had shabu shabu of fish and organic vegetables, a kuroge beef dish and other starters. It was a tasty and hearty meal; portions were not overwhelming and we finished everything. Breakfast was similarly enjoyable too and very aesthetically presented too. Tip: We used the luggage delivery service at the Hakone Yumoto station. They dropped off the luggage at our hotel for a small fee. This freed us to do some sight-seeing before checking in.

• Melissa (8/5): Wish we could have stayed longer! - We only stayed one night and wished we could've stayed longer. We opted for a room with a private onsen. Looking back, that may not have been necessary because there were 3 or 4 private onsens that could be used elsewhere in the hotel, but it certainly was nice having one right in the room. The room was spacious, peaceful and clean. The hotel is conveniently located close to the train station and a bus stop is steps away. There was a free shuttle which we took advantage of. I have 2 food allergies and they went above and beyond to ensure I had plenty to eat. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Overall the environment was very secluded in a good way. The only SMALL bits of feedback we have is 1) would be great to a system in place to order beverages to the room. My husband and I wanted to enjoy a bottle of wine upon arrival and we ended up just calling the front desk and they made it happen. 2) There is so much potential for the outside grounds to be enjoyable. The entrance to the hotel was beautiful, but if you take a walk down the back steps, the grounds are overgrown and unusable. The tennis court was a garden. Not a big deal, just would be great to be able to sit outside and listen to the stream. Overall this place was GREAT and would highly recommend!

• Henry (10/5): - This was our first time in Japan and first time using a hotel of this sort, and we left with a very good first experience! The staff were warm and welcoming right away, talking us through the facilities and showing us to our room, and with good English as well, which helped a lot. The room was atmospheric, perfectly clean, very well equipped and with a gorgeous mountainside view. Having authentic robes and slippers to wear around the whole hotel really made it feel much more traditional. Although we didn't make use of the public baths, the private timeshare baths were perfectly relaxing, again with everything you'd want in there, along with a similarly great view. Breakfast and dinner were included, which were indulgent and VERY filling! Come with an appetite and an open mind for excellent Japanese cuisine! Had a pleasant night's sleep in a very comfy bed, the only slight issue was the sound of what might've been a generator or something humming constantly in the background. Most people would be able to sleep through that just fine, though. Checkout was easy, and the staff went above and beyond by taking us on their shuttle to a museum nearby we wanted to visit next. We were just going to leave our luggage behind the counter for pickup later that day, but the facility of using the shuttle then storing our things in the free lockers at the museum made life much easier. All in all, very impressed, would recommend to anyone visiting Japan.
• Seeling (10/5): Great food - Off peak season visit, free upgrade to room with ensuite onsen. Room was clean, spacious, awesome. Free hotel Wifi available even in room. Managed to get half board - Japanese breakfast and dinner was mind blowing, the only caveat being: one should be used to the Japanese diet of sashimi and vegetables with various interesting condiments, minimal meat. Hotel staff are friendly, helpful and also provide free transport to and from the nearest train station, kowakidani. The only slightly disappointing issue was the public onsen - water had sediments. Not sure if this is the usual case as we are new to the onsen experience, but it certainly did not add to the relaxation. Otherwise, will definitely be back again should we pop by this part of the world.
• Katheryn Casey (4/5): Disappointed in quality of room and service - We were not impressed with this hotel. Prior to arrival we were sent a list of questions that we were not allowed to ask. Hotel only offers a set menu. We tried many other traditional Japanese dinners and breakfasts throughout our trip that we enjoyed much more than this one. Room was extremely outdated and although we had a view of the mountains on one side, we also had a view of a tennis court that was being renovated. Only advantage to this hotel was being close to the Hakone bus stop. Nothing else was nearby. Didn't feel like this hotel experience matched the cost.
• Vu (8/5): Convenient and Clean Hotel - First of all, I was expecting a little more when booked for a suite. The room is in an average size and has a very nice view facing the mountain. However, the beds are very hard plus noises from the room above so I could not get a good sleep. The staff is polite, English speaking, and somewhat friendly. I say that because when I asked for an outlet adapter, instead of bringing it up they had me to come to front desk. Overall, I love the exquisite meals and the on-sens that they have .
• Sally (10/5): Delightful and relaxing - We came here from Tokyo and it was like being in another world. Our rooms were beautiful and we loved relaxing in the onsen. Staff spoke excellent English and were so pleasant and helpful. While some of the meals were a bit alien to our palates, they were beautifully prepared and presented. Hotel is on the bus route that forms part of the circuit so easy to get to the attractions but we also enjoyed just lounging about in our Japanese robes and trying each of the onsen.

As with many ryokan, the food and the views are all important. The Manatee gets full marks on both. We enjoyed great service from our waitress. The bath was traditional hinoki cedar. A real treat. The staff was great about driving us about shot distances from the hotel. Thank you. What attracted us to this particular hotel was the presence of private baths, its location near a rail station, and its English Website.
• Jon (10/5): Peaceful Hotel - Great small hotel nestled in the woods of the Hakone area. There is a beautiful natural stream and small waterfall that runs right past the hotel. Staff are extremely hospitable. The hotel has 3 private Onsen's for use.
• Soujourner99 (8/5): Great hotel. shame about the food - We chose this hotel from the internet as it has private onsen (hot tubs) and provides breakfast and dinner, and we wanted an authentic Japanese hotel which also offers Western style bathroom, toilet and beds. On the one hand the place is very clean and well looked after. The hot tubs feed from the local hot springs and are wonderful, and there are local attractions nearby such as the Hakone Open Air Museum which are absolutely outstanding. On the other hand whilst we wanted authentic Japanese food we would have liked some choice. Each meal is from a set menu and you cannot make any menu changes. Much of the food we liked, but some of it was not to our taste at all and there were no options. They have Menu A on one day then Menu B on the next day, then back to Menu A again so if you stay more than two days you get exactly the same menu back again on day three. The morning they served Japanese breakfast we knew it would be quite unusual for us as Westerners, so we just ate the few things we liked and sent the rest back untouched. However the next day when they served what they call their “Western style breakfast” there was all the same Japanese selection: fish, very fatty bacon, French fries, two or three salads, and other Japanese style items. Yes, we were happy to eat some bakery items like small croissants and brioche, but they were about 15% of the meal, so did not go very far against the number of things we would never eat for breakfast. • Cath (10/5): Could not ask for more! - I was a little confused about how this hotel didn't have a higher rating - our experience was sublime! After a fortnight of being cramped in tiny Japanese business hotel rooms, the space in the regular suite was magnificent. Didn't even need to have the in-room bath; just go down to level 1 and use one of the private rooms (we used it three times during our overnight stay!). The half-board meals were out of this world; didn't know what most of the things were with our breakfast bento - but that made it all the more exciting! Staff were excellent and picked us up from the nearby station (don't try to walk down as it's a very busy windy road with no pedestrian path); service in the restaurant was amazing. We had our own private dining room and wore our yucata. Only criticism would be that the beds couldn't be put together ;) But still perfect for a romantic time - will definitely be back.
