Guest Reviews
- John (9/5): Superb - We stayed at Quai 33
The staff one in the morning and one in evening were charming
Breakfast v.g
- Cansu (5/5): Passable - The curtains had weird white stains on them but otherwise good. It like a hostel more than a hotel.
- Cedric (8/5): Very good -
- Sourena (3/5): Poor - Value for 2 persons .
Location next to train station Bedbugs
Sound of common toilet
Common toilet situated next to our room and we can't sleep .
They don't eve. want my Id card! Big red flag.
- Alycia (8/5): Very good - Good, clean and recently renovated rooms that were close to the train station. The front desk guy was also great! More to a fault of my own but on Sundays you cannot check in between 12:00-18:00
- Annie (6/5): Disappointed our booking at the National was not honoured and that we were moved. - The hotel was clean and comfortable with friendly staff. We were very disappointed that, although booking in March, on the day of arrival we were told we were switched to another partner hotel. We had booked the National because we had stayed there before and had greatly appreciated its traditional, independent atmosphere and decor and it being very different to a lot of modern hotels. We had valued the personal service we received both on arrival and at the bar at breakfast time. We felt the quai hotel we were brought to instead, whilst perfectly ok for a night, completely lacked character and had no atmosphere. We also were not given a plausible explanation as to why we were moved at such a late stage -and whilst everyone was polite and helpful- we felt we our reservation was not valued.
- Steffen (10/5): Exceptional - Cozy room with a nostalgic flair. Perfect for a few nights. Staff was very friendly.
- Nicolas (10/5): - Le séjour s'est bien passé, conforme à mes attentes.
- Leonid (8/5): It is excellent hotel if you are in business trip and want to save money and time. - Friendly personnel, excellent location, clean room, daily cleaning, comfortable window. Quite a simple breakfast, and the room is also quite small.
- JEAN-MICHEL (10/5): - L'accueil est magnifique !
Les chambres confortables et silencieuses
Il manque juste un resto pour manger le soir mais l'hôtel est entouré de restaurants de tous types alors c'est pas vraiment un problème
- Klem (8/5): Great spot. Rip off from Booking.com - Great locaiton, friendly stff We paid 350 Euros, the front desk was offering a nights stay at 72.
Shame on you Booking.com
- Michelle (10/5): Would happily stay again! - Great location just near the train station. Easy access to town, trams, trains. Great little family run pizza place around the corner!
- Nick (9/5): Superb -
- Alison (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (3/5): Adequate, good location - The location of the hotel. The hotel is next to a night club, and on the Saturday night the music was pretty persistent and went on for some time. There was only one towel set, but they happily provided a second set on request. None of the door handles fitted the doors; the wet room arrangement was a little odd, as it is impossible to keep the toilet dry. The shower head didnt stay up; the shelf in the bathroom needs replacing.
Finally, I get the price gouge on the RWC weekend, but it was a pretty big ( x6 of the normal price?)
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Heather (4/5): Disappointing - The owner was lovely and chatty- a nice man. The security in the room was unacceptable. There was no proper extra lock, and no-one present on reception that could have prevented anyone from getting up to the rooms. I had to move a desk to be in front of the door before I could sleep.
For any solo travellers, feeling safe is paramount.
- Ben (8/5): Very good -
- Fisher (7/5): Good -
- James (6/5): Hotel with good location but don’t expect much. - Location near train station and surrounding restaurants. Rooms were serviced well. Check in was less than efficient, couldn’t find the booking at first. We were then handed a key with no information. After the second day we’re told we were supposed to check out that day, we weren’t. We weren’t told about wifi or the fact that there was a small side door and code to access the hotel when the front door was locked (which was often and early). Bathroom was the same size as the one on the train we arrived on with a shower cubicle added (room 19). Price gouge because of rugby game. Original price matched the hotel condition.
- Dawn (6/5): Basic good location - Location was superb. You get what you pay for Shower head leaked and caused leakage through to downstairs , no towels in the room - light in bathroom temperamental . Very basic
- Alison (10/5): Exceptional - Great location very close to the train station. Friendly staff who helped with my luggage and let me leave it there after checkout.
- Gary (6/5): Very basic 2* hotel close to train station and access to town centre. - Location close to the train station At €140 for night in a very small double with smallest bathroom I have ever encountered was poor value.
No facilities in room for making drinks.
Be aware hotel is immediately next door to a nightclub.
- Johan (8/5): Very good -
- Richard (5/5): Passable -
- Doug (9/5): Superb -
- William (3/5): Sketchy set up for a hotel. - Very close to train station. Good convenience store for food/drink opposite. Quiet (or would be without the blasting of the so-called "air conditioning"). Friendly staff. Clean bathroom (but cobwebs in the bedroom and litter under the bed). Plenty of hot water and water pressure. Very dark room for sleeping (or would be if the cooling/heating unit light did not illuminate the entire room - I had to put a tshirt over it). Nice new linens and bed cover and comfortable pillows. As for the "city", the only thing to note is the bistro inside the Stade Geoffroy Guichard with stunning views of the stadium that is a must reserve if you are going to the stade for a match. The picture shown on the site is NOT the hotel. On arrival was told the rooms are in another building, which is around the corner a block away which seemed sketchy to me. Entry was difficult to find as door directions were not clear, so walked round with luggage for fifteen minutes searching. Picture of real location of the hotel is posted. Address actually is 33 rue Denfert Rochereau, which seems to be an old hotel from the outdated info inside the room. Room key is in a lock box in the alley of the building; not sure if lockbox codes are changed; it did not feel very secure with people idling about the lockboxes. For Eur200 the room was VERY small; spartan as a religious retreat - note waist size of 42 inches or more will not fit in the shower stall. Shampoo/shower gel was one tablespoon in a bottle. There is no safe to lock up belongings. There is no security chain/lock to prevent staff or others from entering (which someone tried to do in the morning without knocking). The mini fridge was nice but smelled of mildew when opened. The air conditioning did not really cool the room to below 75 degrees. After four hours it was acceptable to sleep, but the sound of the unit is very loud. The mattress is of the thin, springy, no support Ikea kind. Wifi did not work, neither of the two conflicting signs in the room posting the logins were correct. Could not call the front desk as there is no phone in the room. Called via mobile to the hotel number several times and no one answered, left voice mail and no one returned call. After an hour, dressed to go back to the front desk to ask for the info, met someone in the downstairs area and I got the wifi login/password; wifi worked well! As for the city, it is sorry to say bland, down at heel and depressing with little to see outside the stadium; bistros stop serving at 10:30.
- Colin (10/5): The hotel was comfortable, convenient and at the right price. - The location was perfect, close to the railway station. The single room was cozy but well fitted out, with everything you could need. The continental breakfast was excellent, and the staff were very helpful. The price was unbelievable and worth twice or more There was nothing to dislike
- Jeffrey (7/5): St Etienne - ideal for tram to and from the rugby match - Being told it was Quai 33 where I was actually staying, though thiis was a good room with good shower and toilet facilities.
- Marc (8/5): Very good -
- Viktoriya (10/5): Exceptional - Very good location not far from the railway station. Very good staff and comfortable.
- Leanne (7/5): Good -
- Terezie (6/5): Pleasant -
- Marija (10/5): Exceptional - Good wifi connection. The appartment is really nice and cozy, comfortable bed,all is well. Close to the city center All was good.
- John (9/5): A small but friendly, comfortable and reasonably priced hotel near the station. - A very pleasant small hotel a few minutes walk from St Etienne Chateaucreux station. Simple but comfortable rooms. A very warm welcome from the new owner and his wife. The lovely former owner whom I remembered from a previous stay five years ago was still there to greet guests. Wifi and code to enter at night worked perfectly. I would definitely stay there again if I return to St. Etienne. Nothing negative. The hotel is simple so doesn't have the amenities one would expect in a more expensive establishment e.g. no lift.
- Stuart (10/5): Exceptional - Very warm welcome and friendly staff. Breakfast was decent. Lovely room with an excellent shower. Everything was perfect
- Pierre (9/5): Superb -
- Ali (7/5): Good -
- Michael (10/5): Will stay here again if we are ever in St Etienne again - Spotlessly clean room and wet room area
Very friendly host
- Karen (8/5): good value and near many restaurants - it’s plain, not fancy, but very clean and the bathroom seemed brand new. the hostess is lovely and prepares the breakfast of your choice of three.
- Kelly (8/5): Very good -
- Abderrahman (7/5): Good - the kindness of the staff
- Caroline (8/5): Very good -
- Arda (7/5): Good -
- Gnomes37 (6/5): Good for a 1 night stay but not large enough or comfortable enough for longer - The Gnomes stayed for 1 night in room 7 on September 18th. The room was very clean and tidy if a little on the small side. This is an old town centre property which has been adapted to modern standards by installing a shower room but inevitably at the expense of the remaining space. Our extra pillow request had not been complied with which was irritating. We were also disppointed to discover that our 75€ charge for the night through Booking.com exceeded the stated tariff on the room details, so a definite bad mark for Booking. com. The breakfast area was very clean and tidy although we did not eat breakfast there.
- caterer15 (8/5): stop over - a one night stop over, when arriving not that good from the outside, but inside what difference, very smart clean and fresh, the bathroom(room 4 bis) was amazing with a wet room and very futuristic suite.only downside a night club next doorbut only open 3 nights. not too noisy but very hot and need o leave window open
- Kavkalash (6/5): Acceptable hotel near train station - I visited St. Etienne during the UEFA Euro 2016 and stayed for one night at this hotel.
It's centrally placed. You can reach the train station and a big car park in 2 minutes, after a 15 minutes walk you are in the center of the city.
Although there is a club next to the hotel I had a rather quiet sleep as the shutters kept the noise out.
My medium sized room was clean and comfortable.
Staff of the hotel was very friendly despite having some trouble with the English language. :)
The breakfast was served at my table and rather tasty compared to the normal French standard.
Only downside was that the door was closed when I arrived in the afternoon and I had to call the reception to get in.
All in all I can recommend this hotel if you search for a central located place near the train station to stay one or two nights.
- roddy45 (6/5): One night stay - Stayed for one night while in St Etienne for the football and were pleased to get a room at a reasonable rate
The hotel is 2 minutes from the train station and next door to a nightclub (could this be an issue on a weekend?)
The room we had was small and had a tiny en-suite bathroom. It was very clean though, as was the rest of the hotel.
My only complaint was that after we had checked out we found out that our car, which had been parked nearby, had been broken into, and items had been stolen. We later went back to the hotel and asked the lady on reception if we could use the hotel Wi-Fi to contact our insurer etc but we were refused.
- andrewmV7095TS (8/5): well situated for travellers - A warm welcome from a charming lady who spoke a little English. I actually stayed here twice in September 2014. The rooms were spotless and comfortable. A sensible price for what was on offer. My only niggle would be no cereals on offer at breakfast....all the other places I stayed at had these on the menu.I would stay here again ....
- CHRISCARTERKS (8/5): Hotel near the main train station Saint-Etienne - This is a 1 star hotel situated near the Chateaucreux Train Station, about a few minutes walk. There is a tram station that gives you access to the main centre ville.
English speaking staff that makes communication easy for international travellers. The management is helpful and welcoming.
This is a great hotel to stay with newly repaired rooms, well maintained bathrooms, flat screen TV, free WI-FI and with 157 cm flat screen HD TV in the breakfast lounge where you can enjoy your breakfast watching your morning news.
The hotel is under renovation so the facade is not as pretty as it should be but it will be done soon according to the hotel manager.
