Guest Reviews
- lucie (9/5): Great stop, we recommend it. - Nice old style and well located in a cool little town! Clean and quiet. Staff at the restaurant were very nice! The person at the desk on arrival was a little cold but polite.
We could used lights on both side of the bed for reading…

- Julie (9/5): Charming affordable stay in historic comfy hotel - This was a charming hotel and I loved my room. The room was a tiny bit tired (carpet) but the things I loved more than made up for it. Really nice bathroom and shower. The bed was super comfortable and I had 3 opening windows with a nice view to a charming street. The restaurant was gorgeous, delicious, inexpensive and our server was wonderful. I really loved everything about this hotel and town and was sad I only had one night. Highly recommend for those who want charm and can overlook a little bit of wear. I liked everything!
- Jolene (5/5): Underwhelming experience for the price. - The historic aspect was nice. Parking situation is not ideal. Parking is hidden behind the building and no exterior entrance to the hotel so you have to walk through an alley to get back to the front door to re-enter. Beds are hard and very uncomfortable. Lack of outlets in room and no refrigerator or microwave in room.
- Peter (8/5): Hike there were a few things that need to be improved, the hotel is central, room is clean and bed was comfortable. I wou - The property is centrally located. Room was clean. The continental breakfast is underwhelming and coffee quality is weak. Some of the restaurant/bar staff on Mother’s Day evening were unfriendly.

- David (10/5): Will stay again. My first choice when visiting Lexington - Very clean. Great location.
- Andre (9/5): Great spot to stay when visiting Lexington. Ba.! - Though a small hotel by today’s standards - the rooms were all we needed for the visit and occasion.
We wish we had eaten at your restaurant but as it was out first stay there, another dinner location was used. We will definitely utilize your restaurant next time! Everything met our needs and expectations !!
- mike (9/5): - The pillows were much to firm
- Stephen (9/5): Great location - Location Tv
- Tammy (8/5): - The history was great. Also the bar/restaurant staff was great. Bed was okay but I prefer a soft mattress. Was hoping for a frig in the room but no such luck
- Jackie (10/5): Great location in beautiful Lexington - Great location and comfortable rooms- free parking a bonus Nothing
- suzanne (6/5): It was disappointing. After a 6 hour car ride, we wanted to relax. The room was really Small... - The location was Great!!!! There were 3 adults in a room with 2 queen beds. The room was just big enough for the beds/night stands. It was unusually small. Bathroom was a good size though.
The breakfast was very limited. The space was dark and small. There were only 3 tables, totalling 6 chairs
- michelle (8/5): - Convenient location. Clean and comfortable. Would have liked better options for breakfast
- Martin (5/5): Cool architecture & room clean but beds uncomfortable & everything closed on Monday. - Love the architecture and all the cool things that they left in this old building – phone booths, elevator. Also rooms were very clean! Beds were very hard and pillows uncomfortable. They spent a lot of time and money on a shower that we didn’t even use. Would’ve been better to get more comfortable beds! Every time there was big movement of any kind – closing the door, opening a door - the lights would flicker. Inconveniently placed outlets for charging. No one informed us in advance that the restaurant would be closed both days of our visit and that just about all of the shops nearby are also closed on Mondays. A big part of our decision to stay here was the little downtown location where there would be a lot of things to do and shops to visit but this was not the case. Almost everything was closed!
- Paul (7/5): - Location in the center of historic Lexington, walking distance to almost all local attractions.
Modern updated room. Breakfast is "included", but in reality the offering is meager. .

- Susan (6/5): We were safe and everyone was friendly, but the hotel isn't comfortable. - The staff members we met were friendly, helpful, and the best part of the hotel. Thr tile floors in public areas were lovely. The room was small, dark, and oddly configured. The mattress was hard and we needed the topper (not really a comforter) ftom the second bed to sleep. The breakfast was adequate, but only just. There wasn't any regular tea (orange cut black pekoe), only non-caffeine herbal teas. It wasn't a comfortable stay.
- DeLisa (10/5): We will definitely come back. We left it. - The staff couldn't have been more lovely, and it literally was one of the most comfortable beds, particularly the sheets, blankets, and pillow pillows that I've ever experienced in my life The parking lot was inconvenient and not in great shape, but would've been better if it led to a back entrance. The sidewalk out front is very very steep that made it kind of difficult to unload.
- Stacey (9/5): Would absolutely stay again! - Excellent location, fantastic staff, comfortable room. Breakfast was underwhelming.
- Robert (9/5): - Breakfast could be better
- Nicole (1/5): Disappointing - There was a party that went on until 2 am. I have never experienced anything like it. I have been at hotels where rooms were loud. This wasn’t music it was animal calls. This had illegal activity and a stream of individuals passing in and out of doors. I would say the staff had no control over the situation. I largely felt like they threw their hands up and instead should have called the police.
- Roxann (10/5): -
- Miller, Jr. (10/5): If my daughter decides to enroll at W&L, this will be my go to placle to stay when visiting. - The location was fantastic, directly in the middle of historic Lexington and only a couple minutes walk to Washington & Lee/ VMI. I loved that that hotel kept a lot of historic features but had modern amenities. The room was very clean with a comfortable bed and a nice bathroom. We slept great the 1 night we were there. The continintal breakfast was very basic consisting of fruit, bagels, and cereal but they did use the good Lavazza coffee.
- Linda (9/5): The Gin Hotel, Lexington, VA - lovely and convenient to the old town - Loved the hotel-.perfect location for our visit to Lexington. Our room was very clean and the bed was comfy. We had a nice dinner in the hotel restaurant. Staff was very friendly. Wish there had been an extra blanket available. Also, the light from the hallway was quite bright and flooded our room with light through the bottom and all around the frame of our door (we placed a towel at the bottom of the door but light still filtered through the top and sides of the door- bring masking tape and a sleep mask!
- Jenn (8/5): Central location. Great place to be based to explore. - Friendly staff. Comfortable room. I had a corner room. It was spacious, lots of windows. Great location - walkable to many restaurants. Free parking in back. Continental breakfast. And always coffee/tea. Would have loved a small refrigerator in my room. The rooms are an odd mix of renovated (really nice and spacious bathroom) and not renovated (old, tired carpet). Would have loved a greek yogurt option at breakfast (something with a bit of protein in it!)
- Pamela (6/5): Overpriced, but great location. - Great location Room needs updating, cheap furnishings, terrible coffee in the room, rancid body lotion, poor quality soap, shampoo, etc. Too much sweet items for breakfast, and too much throwaway plastic everywhere.
- David (9/5): Great hotel, great staff, great location - Great older building right in the heart of town. The parking was not super convenient
- Marguerite (7/5): - Good location in downtown Lexington.
- Anna (8/5): -
- Mark (9/5): Great stay right in downtown Lexington. - Very clean and comfortable rooms. Great location. Short walk to VMI and W&L campus. Excellent restaurant onsite and just steps from other eateries and bars. Nothing.
- Rafal (8/5): -
- Mark (8/5): We like the Gin. Not fancy, but gives us what we need. - Great location and great views from the fifth floor. Could not regulate the room temperature with the thermostat. Sleeping conditions were a bit too warm. The only way to counterbalance that was to open a window slightly.
- Danielle (10/5): -
- Mark (10/5): Beautiful hotel, fabulous location, great town and amazing friendly staff - Beautiful place All good!
- Kathleen (8/5): Wonderful location with friendly staff and comfortable accommodations - Dinner at Junipers was delicious and our server was attentive, the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Location of the property and parking was excellent with easy access to downtown activities Unfortunately, we did not have any outlets or charging port access points near the bed to place on the bedside table and there was no clock in the room to see what time it was with our phones having to be across the room being charged. The TV was also small, but this was not a huge issue for us personally.
- Michael (10/5): -
- Anne (9/5): -
- Michele (8/5): Comfortable - Staff was so accommodating. Really cute hotel, dinner in Juniper lounge was food. The room was nice No fridge in the room. I would have liked to used my own subscriptions on the television, like on a Roku. The cable tv was very difficult to use.
- Melanie (9/5): Our 2nd stay at the Gin - This was our second time staying at the Gin Hotel. We love that it is a historic building, with some history preserved while also providing modern touches. We love the elevator with the old school crank, and the original pay phone in the lobby, but also the large shower with the rain showerhead. The rooms are large and quiet and the hotel is located right in the heart of downtown, close to everything. Could use some more outlets near the bed. Plugging in sleep devices proved to be a little challenging.
- Tammy (10/5): -
- Rita (10/5): -
- Alice (9/5): -

- JUD (9/5): - We loved how this historic building has not been too modernized. There are plenty of modern hotels that we could've stayed at, but we purposefully chose one that stayed more true to it's origins. My only complaint is that the two recessed lights in our room were hanging down a couple of inches & the wires & housing were exposed.
- Catherine (8/5): -
- Melody (5/5): - Pretty building Floor was a little dirty, very old carpet and the bed was sooo firm.
- Mark (7/5): -
- Delnari (7/5): Old Town Charm with some modern updates. Not a comfortable bed to try and sleep in. - The room was large enough. The shower and bathroom very modern with high toilet. Plenty of towels as well. HVAC controls easy to set desired temperature. Small TV that was a good distance from the bed. Mattress was very stiff and hard. Was not able to sleep most of the night from the discomfort.
- Kathleen (7/5): Convenient for walking out for local bar food - Location, helpful staff Temp/fan is controlled at front desk - it was set to heat, but the room was stuffy. Front desk did supply a box fan, which helped. Also, the bathroom remodel trend of rain shower and no doors must end.
- Tracy (10/5): -
- Bearnard (10/5): -
- Jane (10/5): -
- Elizabeth (8/5): - Historic 1929 hotel in the heart of Lexington. Easy walk to Washington and Lee and VMI. Very cool original elevator. Nice restaurant and bar on second floor. Lights were difficult to control in room. One switched controlled everything, probably because of age of building.
- Sandy (8/5): I did enjoy being in downtown Lexington, but I would probably choose a different property next time. - The location right downtown with access to shops and restaurants was lovely! This property is full of history and is charming. I loved that there was a good restaurant right in the building. Although update, the hotel needs some attention. Carpets are stained and need replacing. There are no screens on the windows so when you open them flies come in. You can’t control the temperature in your room. It smelled overpoweringly of bleach when we entered. The pillows were way too hard.
- Robert (9/5): -
- Tania (8/5): - Historical building and comfortable rooms Breakfast. Very small selection and only cold items.
- Stuart (10/5): - Location n historical hotel
- Kristin (8/5): Nice hotel in a historic town. - Beautiful location, the rooms were clean and tidy. The parking situation is not great.
- B (10/5): Exceptional all around! - Very clean and Comfortable. Safe and Secure, and the Staff are very Professional. n/a
- Diane R (9/5): Full of old fashioned charm. - Lovely old hotel. The room was big and the bathroom beautiful with a huge walk-in shower.
- Janet (9/5): -
- Laura (10/5): - It's beautiful. Smelled so good as soon as w walked through the door. Very classy and great for the price. Love the location. We didn't have microwave and fridge but I should've checked. Not a big deal.
- Ellen (10/5): -
- Valerie (7/5): Great location, could use some updates - Loved the location, very central downtown and walkable. Lots of old, original features from the 20’s that made the charm of this hotel really something Walls were VERY thin, could hear the TV of the other room flat as day trying to sleep, no outlets anywhere, no fridge.
- Michael (10/5): The best place to stay in Lexington - Great location, easy parking, great staff. Did have issue with a noisy guest in next room. Situation was resolved quickly. Room and bed were comfortable. Strongly recommend this hotel. All good
- Payne (8/5): -
- Alan (10/5): - Nice hotel and staff. Would recommend.
- Margaret (8/5): - Loved this old hotel. Walkable and so convenient to Washington and Lee campus. Grab and go breakfast very nice.
- Beth (8/5): -
- Robert (10/5): - The Gin Hotel is a beautifully refurbished "Grand" Hotel in a small Virginia town. Located on Main Street in downtown Lexington, it is two blocks from Washington and Lee University and five blocks from the Virginia Military Institute. Lexington's Main Street has been reinventing itself each year over the fifty-five years since I graduated from W&L and it is now populated with unique shops, craft stores and restaurants. The hotel is quiet, clean and well maintained. Unlike when I was in Lexington in the late 1960s, the town is ringed with the usual collection of mid-level hotel chains. These are all fine hotels but ones like these can be found in virtually every town in the US. Staying in historic downtown Lexington (for the same price) is so much more fun!
- James (10/5): - Beautiful hotel. Great customer service both check in & check out Great location. Awesome restaurants with in walking distance.
- PATRICIA (7/5): Good location as far as on the way we were traveling. - We were disappointed in the limited breakfast options. Our room was advertised as having a refrigerator; it did not. It was need, clean, but uninspiring. Very minimalist. At better breakfast.
- Erica (6/5): - Bed uncomfortable room hot
- Marco (9/5): Heerlijk hotel in het historische centrum van Lexington - Heerlijk ruime kamer
- paul (10/5): Charming stay; Definitely will do it again - Room was clean and large. Hotel is very quaint and great atmosphere. Wonderfully easy and nice breakfast. Charming building.
The bed was not that comfortable but sometimes that’s a personal preference….
The location downtown is fabulous and there is a balcony restaurant that’s a must.
Personnel very nice and rooms are reasonably priced.
- Asaf (8/5): Great location in a charming town, right by Natual Bridge and Blue Ridge Parkway - Great location within Lexington, clean and comfy rooms Rooms on the small side
- James (6/5): Great location. Not a great deal - Great location. Actual restaurant in hotel. Restaurant only ok. Mahi great. Lamb overcooked. Good dessert. Breakfast selections poor for the price of the room.
- Julie (8/5): - Lovely hotel with great dining.
- Dennis (10/5): - I was looking for a place to stay for my birthday and found the Gin. Loved the style and history. I also had dinner at the restaurant which was a great experience.
- helen (9/5): We really enjoyed our stay and would come back. - Historic vibe, location downtown with lots of restaurant, large room and comfortable bed, friendly staff Breakfast.
- Elizabeth (1/5): - We did not even stay. The pictures do not represent what the room really looks like. The breakfast we were told was a grab and go. We went to the Hampton Inn and stayed.
- Joaquin Cristobal (9/5): Nicely surprised. - The location in the very center of town is perfect. The room very comfortable and nice and the staff very kind and helpful. The terrace at the Lounge is awesome for having dinner with the view of the Main Street. To me everything was almost perfect.
- Rachael (10/5): - Terrific stay at The Gin Hotel! Located in Lexington, VA, the hotel is close to both Washington & Lee and the Virginia Military Institute. The property is very charming with a lot of character. Staff was very welcoming, engaging and helpful. The room was clean and well tended. They offer a free continental breakfast, which is very basic, but was fine for our needs as we are not big breakfast eaters. The property is centrally located in the town and well situated for a walk about this historic town. I was particularly appreciative of the free parking, which was located directly behind the hotel and very convenient. All in all a brief, but great stay at The Gin!
- virginia (4/5): - Bed linens nice, bed clean and comfy.
Carpet in room filthy, smelled bad. Noisy did get a room change which helped
Lobby is beautiful but rooms need updates, a shame because it is a really neat hotel. Front attendant not very friendly, overall a 2/3 rating
I would not go back again
Sorry. Plus price was higher than elsewhere, could have gotten better for less money. But this hotel looked so cool, very dissapointing.
- Jackie (10/5): -
- Jane Koen (7/5): -
- Alison (10/5): Stylish historic hotel - We stayed at the Gin when we dropped our son off at W&L. The mattress was average and the electrical outlets are minimal, but the location, style, and hotel bar overlooking downtown more than made up for any deficiencies. We will be back for another bees knees soon.
- Sarah (8/5): - Easy check-in, comfortable room, and friendly staff.
- Preston (8/5): - Perfect location!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice boutique hotel - Very cute boutique hotel. Small parking behind the hotel so you do have to walk around front, nice staff in the lobby. They offer a grab and go breakfast. Only thing is the outlets in our room at least were not near the bed to plug phones in we had them across the room. But we would stay again, close to shopping and nice restaurants.
- Colin (8/5): A solid choice in Lexington - Central location could not be better; the room was clean and comfortable. Parking at the back of the hotel. The room did not have a fridge or a microwave. The breakfast was a rather sad assortment of bagels yogurt and cereal.
- Julia (7/5): Very comfortable but with several drawbacks. - The beds were very comfortable. The room is clean but the dirt on the outside of windows ruined the view. The shower and bathroom were large.Their restaurant and staff were great but it's closed on Monday and Tuesdays (2 of my 4 day stay). The front desk staff was very very helpful and cheerful all the time.
The location is great, right on the main street and in walking distance to VMI and also Washington & Lee University campus and tons of local shops. Kinda neat to see the cadets when they walked around town from campus. The TV was sooo very small, just a little larger than a large computer monitor. There was no channel card to help figure out what the channels were. You had to click on each channel then wait 3 seconds for it to come up.(Photo below)
There were no handles in the shower or bathroom for us seniors and my shower dripped leaving water there all the time and since it was not level there was always a puddle of water standing in one corner of the shower (Photos below). It was not slick but a grab rail would have been nice to have.
There was no refrigerator in the room. After I asked about one the staff did bring what they called a "mini-frig" but it would only hold 4 bottles of water which took about 24 hours to actually get cold. No, it was not the size of a dorm frig for college. It was about 13 inches tall and 8 inches wide inside. More of a "micro-frig". (It is the silver box on the left corner of the desk in the photo below).
The parking was free but was difficult to find the first day in the rain. Hint: you have to drive around the block to the back of the building and pay close attention to find the very small sign then pull up a driveway between 2 others buildings. Also, it's not easy to get around other vehicles in the lot. Only 2 handicap spots.
Finally, they mention free breakfast but it is a continental breakfast.. The fruit was small and looked old the first morning. The toaster took 3 cycles to get my bagel warm. There are only bagels and out-of-the-box breakfast bars, cereal, small yogurts and oatmeal in a cup to eat. No coffee creamers, just 2% milk for the coffee. There is a place just a short walk away with a great breakfast menu called Sweet Treats that the front desk directed me to.
