Safe and secure, bustling neighborhood. Great staff! Breakfast is only from 8:30 to 9:30, which is too late if one’s leaving on a tour.

- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel close to the bus terminal - Hotel located close to red line cable car, cemetery and bus terminal. Friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Stay away - Besides two people at the front desk who were nice, the rest was bad. They only want you for your money, and you feel that way. Hair in the sink and shower. Minimalist breakfast with no choice at all (you either have breakfast or you don't). I'm rather tall and had to pay extra for a queen bed. I mentioned it as a preference that I had already paid for and they had it available, but refused to give it to me unless I paid more. Simply keep away.

- Traveler (4/5): People Skills Go A Long Way, Or Not - I paid for a room for one person with a queen bed for 9 nights. When I checked in, despite having clear documentation of my purchase, and a translator with me, I was denied what I had already paid for. I was told that I would have to pay more if my translator were allowed upstairs, although I was given a room with 2 single beds, I was also told that I would have to pay twice as much as I had already paid, to get what I already paid for, a queen bed. The hotel wasn't nearly full, and they could have easily given me the queen bed, but they, especially Luz, the granddaughter of the owner, were determined to get more money from me. It also seemed to annoy them that I had a local with me that understood the situation and attempted to advocate for me. They told me that I needed to leave them the room key so that they could clean the room, which I did after cautiously removing my belongings. After returning, I was told that my key was missing, and they were quite persistent about getting more money from me, because how else could it go missing if not my fault??? Although somehow the room was clean and empty of my things.... I was thoroughly sick of all the shenanigans, including standing in 8" of trap water to take a shower, and I expressed that all I wanted was to check out without paying more, Then they had to send someone up to make sure the remote control was there!! i stayed 2 of 9 nights and never got any refund, but didn't pay more either, beware of scammers!!

In the middle of the dirt and chaos, Hotel La Joya stuck out as what appeared to be the nicest place one could find in the area. The breakfast area is nice with good views of the city while the staff and owners were pleasant, helpful, and spoke great English.
- kimberlymarshall2016 (8/5): I had a large room on the back of the hotel so that it was relatively quiet despite the bustling neighborhood. - I suffered from altitude sickness my first day, and the staff were very helpful, bringing me maté de coca and sorojchi pills. Thanks to their care, I was able to take a 3-hour walking tour of La Paz the next day!

- WanderingAimlessly4U (8/5): An oasis in La Paz - I had a great experience here, the girls at the desk speak English and are very helpful to show you how to get where you want to go. A saviour for me as my Spanish is horrible. They are available 24 hours, I arrived at 4:30am from the night bus, rang the doorbell and they let me in and checked me in. The hotel itself is old and worn, but has big rooms and bathrooms, hot water with good pressure, good wifi in the room, and a good basic free breakfast with eggs, bread, coffee and juice. It's a lively neighborhood, 10 minutes walk to San Fran square, main bus terminal and red line telefirico. 5 minute walk to a great little cafe called Tia Gladys at Ave Illampu and calle Santa Cruz. Expect bs40 from the airport and bs80 to go back to the airport

- Michael (8/5): Great efficient,friendly, and helpful staff. - The hotel arranged for a taxi pickup at the airport and a drop off at the airport. They were also able to provide escorted tours of La Paz and to Lake Titicaca. I was able to make the most of 2 and a half days in La Paz.

- Adzy85 (4/5): unimpressed - I stayed at hotel La Joya for three nights in september 2015 and to be very honest i didn't enjoy my time. I made my booking thru booking.com and i felt little deceived by the photos and description of the hotel. The hotel has a lift that works sometimes, if you a new into the country and your dealing with the altitude then stairs are hard work. The bedroom itself was ok the bathrooms were ok not with hot water. The staff were as helpful as the could be with minimal english. The hotel is a lot older than the pictures will have you think and it is not in a nice area of La Paz. It smells on the street and you have a fair walk to go to any restaurant or bar. Again if your acclimatising this is not ideal. Although the staff were helpful and i appreciate that i would not recommend this hotel unless your on a real budget with no other choice.

- Lucy (4/5): Below average - Slightly below average, this hotel is a bit farther from the main San Pedro Square. A 10-12 minute walk will take you to the main central area, so the location is not bad. They did have hot showers, breakfast, and a spacious room with wifi. Most of their staff do not speak English, which is not a problem if you know basic Spanish. I found the most irritating part of my stay was the disorganized staff. Examples: they called my room close to midnight when I was asleep, asking for my passport when they had already gotten it earlier. They messed up the price for my laundry and didn't give me a receipt. I ordered a taxi one morning from them, and it never came. When I found my own taxi on another occasion, they insisted I use the one they had called even though it was more expensive. There are probably closer hotels that are better. I would recommend this hotel if you prefer to stay away from the main touristy area.

But the good news is that the marked doesn't start until 9am and closes at around 21:40, so at night it's totally quite. I took the privet bathroom option and for 18usf the hotel gave an excellent value for the money, clean room with decent breakfast that included fried egg toast jam and coffe. The hotel is located a short walk from San Fransisco church and the travelers shops and hostel. Would recommend for anyone on a budget. Alex
- Verified traveler (6/5): Misinformation from hotel - The hotel was pointed out to me on line when I indicates that proximity to airport was my priority as I was flying into airport the evening before and catching 4:25 am flight out the next morning. The web search said it was 5 km from airport and it turned out to be more like 20.
- 886amyk (6/5): Good for the price - They picked me and my party up from the airport for a very fair price. The staff were very friendly on arrival but were not sure of the room formations we wanted as a group of 15. The staff speak basic english which makes life easier. The hotel was quite cold as we went during Bolivian winter and the showers are very temperamental, don't expect a hot shower. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfy, the bathrooms were clean also although they do not provide toilet paper, although i believe if you asked they would give it to you. The breakfast was good but the same every single morning. When you are there for a month on and off its safe to say it can get tedious. They very nicely recommended a hotel to stay in in Copacobana, lake titicaca and kindly booked it for us as they knew our spanish was not exactly perfect. Its handy that they have internet facilities in the hotel although safe to say that was a little temperamental as well. Overall a good hotel for the price you're paying
- Jo_Spreagles (4/5): Not to be recommended - We went to this hotel having read about it in Lonely Planet. On arrival, the staff were unaware of our booking, and we were eventually taken to a room where they were still in the process of cleaning it and changing the bed sheets. The 'double' bed was particularly small, approx a 4 foot job. The bathroom rarely had hot water. The roof has great views of La Paz and the location, particularly for the surrounding markets, is great, and quite untouristy. When we asked about the rate, we were given different ones by every member of staff - this is definitley negotiable. Additionally, when asking female staff to order taxis, they went out into the street and pay the taxi driver around B/5 and then charge you B/25, pocketing B/20 for themselves. We returned to La Paz twice in the following month and stayed elsewhere both times in much better places.
- Bartw505 (8/5): Oasis of rest in a ants nest - face it, the worst thing about this hotel is the neighbourhood. The strees around the hotel are crowded like nothing you've ever seen, traffic jam 24/7, markets going on day after day. But when you enter the hotel that's all behind you. Hot showers 24/7, nice spacy rooms, decent prices, standard breakfast. The dining room on the top floor is just georgeous, since we were the only guests we had it all to ourselves. It had a bit of an Overlook-hotel feel to it, but that was half the charm, and most of the staff is very friendly.
- alieno60878 (8/5): Smart choice in La Paz - Tired of party hostels and cold showers, I needed a good night sleep and La Joya was the right place. Friendly personnel, definitely feels safe, warm and very quiet rooms, hot water all day long in the shower and on the tap. Breakfast is included and they specify that the juices have no water added and the tea water has been boiled. For a few bucks more than a hostel, I was finally able to enjoy the city. Location is good in the north area of the city near all the markets. Only 2 critiques: they don't clean the room every day, and the pick up service from the bus station is of course a guy who meets you there and then takes a taxi with you. -- take the taxi yurself instead.

Looks well located in the map, but getting there implies to walk uphill for many blocks. Wifi access does not exist. Breakfast is utterly dissapointing... Cold bread, marguerine and poor quality jam.

- Kerly (8/5): A welcome relief.... - I travelled to Bolivia on an expedition with a total of 13 people. We arrived in La Paz and after embarking on 4 flights to get there, we were all very shattered and looking forward to a warm cosy bed and some sleep. The Hotel La Joya provided this and we were most grateful for it. As there was a relatively large number of us, we were glad to have somewhere where we could all stay in a great location. The internet cafe next door meant family and friends could be contacted easily and this was welcomed by many people in our group. The hotel had a number of floors and breakfast was served on the top floor with a fantastic view over the city and onto the surrounding mountain ranges. Although the communal bathrooms could have been in better condition, the beds were comfortable, the water in the showers hot and the triple rooms spacious enough for 3 girls and their ridiculous sized backpacks....! We enjoyed the service and the friendliness of the staff there so much that as we ventured out to explore other sights of Bolivia, we returned to La Paz 5 times and on each occassion we returned to the Hotel La Joya for accommodation. I'm sure if you were travelling to La Paz on a holiday or with a small group , there would be slightly better places to stay. However for 13 people on a relatively tight budget the Hotel La Joya provided a perfectly good home away from home in the hustle and bustle of the city.
- chesilfan (4/5): Going down hill - We stayed here, because or son had stayed here 2 years ago. But it is going downhill. Situated in the middle of the markets it is uphill climb. Clean but fittings beginning to fall apart. Not sure who is in charge, but on our last night we had no towels as they were in the wash and in the morning we could not have breakfast because they were not ready. Plenty of alternatives. for another $7 we could have stayed in relative luxury at the Hotel Rosario a quarter of a mile closer to centre of town
