Guest Reviews
- David (8/5): Great location, old motel rooms - Old motel style rooms. Price is reasonable for Grand Marais. Plumbing and AC were good. Bedding was old but still reasonably comfortable.
- Constance (4/5): - I was not aware we would be in a room with NO air condition! Also the walls are so thin you can hear every word spoken in the rooms next to you, which means they can hear you as well. There are quite a few hotels/motels in the Spruceglen Inn listing. When a person gets the confirm email for their stay, It would be VERY helpful if the physical address to the place they are staying was linked to google maps.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - No AC, stinky, dirty.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The overhead ceiling fan was disgusting. We definitely cleaned it ourselves before using it
- Jody (8/5): Good Economical Motel - Keep in mind that you are in Grand Marais, not Manhattan nor downtown Chicago. Grand Marais has motels or lodging. This one has what you should expect from a motel: a clean bathroom, access to hot tub and pool, grab and go breakfast and walking distance to restaurants and bars. It's the lowest priced motel in town; take advantage of their amenities to get your money's worth.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - No air conditioner
- Brandon (8/5): Nice stay - Hey-it was good. Front desk was friendly, place was clean, right in the heart of it all. Great, simple place as a gateway to the trials and splendor of the north.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is an ordinary hotel in an extraordinary location.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - If you are looking for luxury this isn’t your place. Nice clean room with ceiling fan. No a/c. Small room. The Aspen Lodge is next door, motel patrons may use the pool and spa. Motel is in the town so is walkable to the Lake, restaurants and shopping. Motel is on Hwy 61 so easy access to the Sawtooth Mountains and hiking destinations.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - There were gross stains on the mattress, the sheets, and the comforter. I asked for clean sheets and even that was stained. I asked if they washed the comforter between guests and they said only twice a week because “most people don’t sleep on the comforter.” The room smelled really bad and there was no air conditioning. The room was hot and humid.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We had a nice stay and it met our needs!
- Mark (8/5): Two night stay just right - Small room with king bed. TV and fridge, no coffee or microwave in room. Those were available in main lobby which was fine for the price. We just needed a place to sleep and base out of, this fit the bill. Loved being 2 blocks from downtown. Would stay again 👍
- Verified traveler (4/5): - We felt deserted n looked poorly, had to check in next door. the advertisement said AC but there was none. never cleaned rooms. Sorry but won't go back there again.
- Verified traveler (2/5): This was very insulting! - The room was awful! No air conditioning! A “BOX” tv! Spots and stains on the roof, walls, ground, and bed! Holes in the sheets! A giant spider “ON THE BED” not even ten minutes of us entering the room. We sprayed bug spray around the bed frame. This was beyond disgusting. Never will we return here!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Beds where dated no ac
- Verified traveler (10/5): quiet little spot - Quiet little spot within walking distance of Restaurants and shops in the center of town.
10/10 Would recommend if you just need an affordable place to sleep.
Not usually my cup of tea having a door directly to the outside, but when I brought up my concern to the front desk, the property manager was there within seconds to add 3” screws to the strike plate on the door, giving us much needed peace of mind.
The staff were friendly and courteous.
There were several amenities at the hotel right next door available to us. Pool/hot tub/sauna , WiFi, coffee/breakfast etc.
- Kerry (4/5): - The room was clean, but dreary. It had a musty, odd odor, that never let up.
I was very pleased though that the bathroom had been newly remodeled. It was the last room in town that was available, otherwise I would not have rented it.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The room was really clean, great location, friendly staff. I would definitely stay here again!
- Carey (8/5): - Reminded me of the old mom and pop hotel. Cute, clean and little. It was perfect. No need for a fancy place for me!
- Emily (6/5): - There was highway 61 road construction right outside the front entrance. I did not hear it, as my room faced the lake. Clean, nice room for the money, but no air, only a ceiling fan and very uncomfortable for sleeping ( weather was muggy)
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Rundown motel room. Wallpaper peeling off the walls, trim coming off, old dusty spiderwebs in corners. At $30 a night, I wouldn't have cared, but the price they get for the room all season they should make some upgrades. The nice part is you get to use the Aspen Lodge pool/hot tub and have breakfast in their lobby.
- Andrea (4/5): - We were very disappointed that this is a separate building from the "parent" lodge.
Not apparent on the reservation site.
Remove the weeds along the sidewalk.
Clean but very small.
Spruceglen could not control the road construction, but noisy.
- Todd (2/5): - Complete dump, only stay if you need to sleep for cheap on way to BWCA, but bring/ use a sleeping bag. The front desk person was kind enough to set us up at another property owned by the same group in town and change our reservation.
- Lulu (8/5): - Need a repair. But for one night was ok to stay.
Nice staff
- Verified traveler (8/5): Non luxurious room, wonderful pool, hot tub, sauna - Stay was fine, room very ordinary. Pool and hot tub were great, but a short walk outside was required to get there.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Quiet and clean. Worked out perfectly for us. Would stay there again
- Rhonda (8/5): Original "Motel"/Clean/Friendly Fred - This is an original motel where your park outside your door. It is an old motel but very very clean. Fred at the front desk was the best. Friendly and full of information. Would stay here again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Older building could hear the tv and other people talking in the rooms next to us.
- Laurel (6/5): Needs updating - Rooms need updating, smelled musty, bed was super hard and uncomfortable.
- Verified traveler (6/5): They try, but.... - The positive is that guests get to enjoy all the amenities of the hotel next door and the people there were very friendly.. Another positive is the comfortable king bed. The negative is that it is just plain old. Condition of bathroom (old, musty smelling shower curtain), size of room, condition of sitting chairs, and old tube TVs - it’s just old, and it’s hard to keep a really old, tired motel feeling fresh. But - we slept comfortably and had a great time in Grand Marais, so no worries, but next time I would choose a more modern hotel and pay extra.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We liked the breakfast at he Aspen Lodge and the hot tub was great. But we did not like our room ,too small.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - It is an old building and the beds were very uncomfortable. No extra pillows or blankets were available. It was very clean and the host was very pleasant and helpful. Would not stay here or recommend this place.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The very basic motel room was clean, capable staff were friendly and responsive.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Older property but well kept with a comfortable bed and some upgrades. the breakfast was good with enough variety to satisfy us.
- Susan (10/5): Great little hotel - Excellent little hotel with access to facilities and breakfast next door, remarkably quiet for being right on the main road. Several food options within walking distance
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The room was nice. Good eating close. Did not use the pool so no comments there.
- James (6/5): Wish they'd offered me some money back. - Grand Marais is about destination more than accommodation. Our room was adequate. The road noise was very loud. There was no air conditioning. There was a dead bug on the wall that had been there a while.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - On short notice we scrambled to find two nights lodging in gran Marais: the town was booked up for Fisherman’s Picnic weekend. The descriptions and reviews accurately describe the modest accommodations that are augmented somewhat by the close affiliation with the better-appointed neighboring Aspen lodge. The location was perfect for walking to the shops, breweries, scenic shore points and the festival and parade. Although the sign suggests king beds, ours was definitely a full and twin pair. Minimalist quarters - tidy, safe and homey in a vintage way.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice basic hotel, older but well kept and clean. Maintenance Man suggested restaurants for us.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Location is fine, rooms are outdated for the price that they are still asking.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Rooms were very clean and easy access. Continental breakfast was good, pool and parking was plentiful.
- Melanie (4/5): Not a penny spent on luxury here. - Very old hotel. No A/C. Small room. Not worth it for the price I paid. Matches wouldn't help it.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The bath was very clean and I liked the smallness of the facility. I didn't
like the funky smell which would have been solved if we could have
opened the windows. Only one of three worked - door screen would
have done the trick but it was taped shut with packing tape. It was nice
to use the pool and breakfast bar at the next door motel.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I liked that it was convenient to walk to the point.
Breakfast was late . . .7 a.m.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - DO NOT STAY HERE!!! Just down the hill (maybe 200yards) there is a sewer treatment plant and YES the smell comes right up the hill and into your ROOM!!! No Airconditioner so you have to have the windows open. HORRIBLE!!!! I complained and was told it will go away in 1.5 hours. I then talked to a gal who lives on the property - in the unit right next to us and she says oh yes you will smell that from time to time - well it was so bad I couldn't stand it at times. So bad it woke me up 3 times that night. If you are traveling here stay on the south side of town! Stay away from the north side - so horrible!!!!!!!!!
- Mike (4/5): - There was no AC in room (not pointed out on Expedia) which needed windows open and road noise made it difficult to sleep. Room was dated and musty. Bathtub drain was slow as well. The Spruceglen portion of this resort is old motel style rooms. Better to opt for Aspen Lodge rooms.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - GREAT location in town to things going on.....excellent view of the lake, some highway noise but otherwise a great place to relax
- Doug (8/5): - All I needed was a room and this motel was fine. Location is an easy walk down town, and you have the use of the pool in the adjacent hotel. Room was clean but the king sized bed is like sleeping on a sheet of plywood. Price is very reasonable.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location, great price, friendly staff, easy check in, clean rooms.
The room did have a strange smell but you get over it and the air conditioner was fairly loud all night long.
Great for a one night stay if your wanting to be in walking distance to all of grand marais cute spots!
- Barb (10/5): - It has gotten colder earlier than expexted, so they moved me to the Lodge. Bigger room, 2 queen beds, nice accommodation. Could have used a few more pillows and the beds were hard, but I'm a princess too, so won't count that against them.
- Anne (6/5): - We found check in/out to be super easy, staff was friendly, continental breakfast was good. The room was well maintained and everything worked (heat, lights/sockets, tv/remote, hair dryer, hot water/shower, toilet, mini fridge). The room definitely showed its age but was very clean.
Two main issues for us were the bed and the thin walls. There were only people staying in the room next to ours for one night and that was the only night where the thin walls were an issue. The bed was a rock and only had one pillow per person.
Note: it seems like this hotel may have recently been purchased by the owners of the neighboring Aspen Inn - that is where we were instructed to check in, it's where the breakfast and pool are, etc.
- JerryandKaren (8/5): - We were on the highway side, so at times it was a little noise. Fortunately, traffic is minimal at night. Our room was great, service was great. Price point was great. On the down side, no coffee pot or microwave in the room but it did have a dorm refrigerator. you have to go next door for coffee and breakfast. For the price, it is excellent.
- Carolyn J (4/5): Disappointed - The heat was not working in our room. The mattress had a big dip on the side toward the bathroom. There was no extra toilet paper so we ran out. The carpet was dirty The Aspen Inn next door looked better
- Verified traveler (4/5): - We were in the sister hotel to main hotel. Differently had no amenities. Small tv, dirty chairs, no table. Filthy bedspread. Mold in shiwer and bathroom. All fixtures in bathroom nasty, leaky sink faucet. Woul never recommended or stay again. I understand the hitel has been there since the 70's, but, they may want to upgrade.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Everything was good including continental breakfast
- William (6/5): - wife thought there was mold in the tub
- Donald (4/5): The facility is a No No - Our room was very old, very musty smell. The toilet bowl was orange from not being cleaned for a while.I have never stayed in a motel in 50 years of traveling that had no air conditioning and it was warm while we were there the first night. The staff and breakfast were fine. The area and sights were great.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Hotel needs a remodel, bed was not comfortable, no air conditioning, no view of the lake. But it was inexpensive compared to other places in the area so.
- Angela (8/5): - The property is much improved from previous reports. Great amenities in the bathroom (soap, shampoo, etc.), a zillion cable TV channels. The continental breakfast (at Aspen lodge next door) included hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, lots of different breads, etc. Overall, a very good experience for a basic motel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Generous and healthy breakfast, great location with wonderful restaurant across the street, very helpful staff directing us with maps
- Jeremy (6/5): A Good Place to Rest Your Head - The motel was bare bones lodging, perfect for travelers who only intend to sleep and shower there. It is important to note that this is really only an extension of Aspen Lodge next door. You'll have access to the pool, vending, and breakfast at the Aspen. Staff leaves at 10pm though; you're on your own at night.
I had a guest outside my window, talking loudly until 3:30. I tried to close my windows, but eventually had to ask him to be quiet due to the time . He kept going, and there was nothing to do. Some sort of staff intervention could have helped a lot at 2am.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Pet policy was not clearly defined on website and was listed as pet friendly on other travel sites. Only until you get to the hotel does it say no pets. Left us with little option since cancellation was non refundable. Hotel staff knocked on our door at 9:30pm and was extremely rude about having a dog, threatened to kick us out. The rooms were also pretty dingy and walls very thin, could hear neighbors talking until 2am. All and all not a very pleasant stay.
- Unbreakable (10/5): - The property was clean and comfortable the staff was nice
- Verified traveler (4/5): I do not recommend this place... - Fake advertising. Very poor conditions for the price paid. Very noisy area.
- Tara (10/5): Surpassed all my expectations! - I'll be honest, after reading some of the other reviews I was a little worried about my stay at Spruceglen Inn. But the moment I arrived, all my worries evaporated. The staff was kind and welcoming. We stayed in the motel next to the main hotel, which meant we had to walk through the parking lot to the pool/breakfast/etc., but I actually preferred not being in the main building. It was quieter, we had a view of the outdoors and there was a lawn with games and a firepit. The rooms were clean and the pillow was seriously the most comfortable pillow I've ever slept on! The location is within walking distance to everything in Grand Marais so we never had to use our car.
- Marty (10/5): - Was ok considering the price. judging from the adjacent facilities, where we had to check in at, this older motel property had probably been purchased and will be replaced or renovated at a later date.
- timothy (6/5): No A/C - The people were great. The free breakfast was a joke and was in the hotel next door. Had to walk in the rain just to get there. A lot of road noise from window that was open to get air.
- Mike (10/5): - Nice room with parking at front of door makes unpacking easy. Close to downtown area, easy walking distance to the stores and lake Superior.
- Sharon (8/5): Quiet Stop - A nice quiet hotel. The bed was comfy and we were able to use the pool next door.
- Wayne (8/5): - Motel was great. Loved the pool, hot tub and sauna, even though they were next door.
The Wifi stunk. As an electrical engineer I couldn't help but notice that they had mounted the wifi patch antenna backward on the side of the building. Makes for a great wifi signal... if your in the parking lot.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - We know Grand Marais is expensive but overpriced for quality of rooms. Room was very crowded and needs updating.new managers are trying to address problems.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was a good stay, enjoyed the amenities. Dog barked 2 nights, but the staff took care of it right away.
- Verified traveler (4/5): only stayed because it was all that was open - We were lucky enough to get room in aspen instead because we asked. Spruceglen was very gross looking on the outside
Getting reservation was almost impossible. 1st floor rooms smelled musty
definitely not worth the money even though front desk gave us discount for pool being closed. Will NEVER stay again.
- kyle (6/5): Needs a remodel - Managed my hotel next door was unexpected. Lady in front of me in line cancelled her reservation 3 weeks before arriving. Then proceeded to have the man working the desk call every hotel in the area to ask if they had any rooms available for a party of 6 with a dog. After nearly 20 minutes of phone calls she ended up staying booking the last two rooms there anyways kinda annoying as my pregnant girlfriend had to use the bathroom which they don't have in the lobby.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Glad I read reviews beforehand and knew what to expect. Downside-small room hard bed and large window at street level so need to keep drapes shut but then no fresh air. Also having to walk to other hotel for comp breakfast. Upside, comparatively inexpensive and close to town
